A NEW project for my kitchen… :o)

My hubby always surprises me when he finds something he “thinks” I might like…he was the one who found my big 21 drawer chest! Sometimes he misses it, but this time he was right on the money. I “think” I’ve wanted an island for my kitchen for a while, but I wasn’t sure. I knew if I ever did get one, I didn’t want a big one because I do like the space in my kitchen and didn’t want it crowded.

This was something he found back before Christmas, but I tucked it away because I “thought” there wasn’t time to get it finished before Rebecca and Karn got here! HA! This solid oak table was at a thrift store and he thought it was nice. When I saw it, I thought… “ISLAND!” But it was too low for an island… it hit about upper thigh on me… way too low for an island.

The top of it was removable and it had these decorative brass cut outs on the corners…

It was $20 and we both liked it, so it came home with us! I liked it in my kitchen, but it needed to be taller…

So I talked my hubby into adding 6″ extensions around the top part of the body…this is when he was measuring the length for the pieces…

We got it raised up about 6″ and I really like it now… there were some cracks that I spackled and sanded and it’s going to be painted from the white boards and down the legs and the top I’m leaving a wood grain…

Then we’ll add the brass pieces back on and start using it! I wish it was done, but I helped out at the Food Pantry today after church and didn’t get home until about 4:00. I was too pooped to start painting… but stay tuned.

I hope you had a nice weekend and are ready for the month of May! Oh dear, I just realized it… I should have done a Happy May 1st post for Dorothy in PA and the world! Oh well, Welcome to May anyway!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

    Happy May Day to all the sofa sisters! I remember making May baskets (construction paper, I guess) in grade school, but in upper Michigan in early May there’s still not a Lot of flowers to choose from! I do remember taking a basket to our neighbor, Mrs. Nadeau, though!

    Your new island is going to be wonderful, Jeanne! Lucky you, to have a hubby so clever as to be able to take what was probably an end table or occasional table, and turn it into an island! Can’t wait to see the results!

    BTW….I succumbed, and ordered Russell!! He was just too cute to resist!! (He’s the Happily Ever After shop’s exclusive, to those who aren’t familiar with the Ruby Red dolls.)

    Happy May to everyone, especially Dorothy from Penn. and the World! Before you know it, the year will be half over!

    Yes, me too, Charlotte! I made paper baskets and filled them with flowers on May 1st, mostly though they were weeds, but they had flowers in them, nonetheless! We put them on our neighbor’s porches too! Do children even think to do that now?

    Jeanne, I always thought your kitchen needed an island, and now you will have one! Mine is a godsend, since it is also a cabinet and I can store things in it, but I really like the top and do all my baking prep on it, since I keep my mixer there. I always have some kind of decoration, like my bunny or whatever seasonal thing I can find on it too. I think it adds personality to a kitchen, and yours will do the same. Are you adding a shelf on the bottom, since that would be a good place for one, and I am sure you could use a shelf there!

    So another Russell in the group! He is proving to be popular!

    I don’t comment often but must contribute to the number of followers who ordered Russell. He looks just like my grandson Krish. The accessories are wonderful, aren’t they. I was so afraid he would be sold out but we got him, didn’t we!

    Great idea for the island. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

    Finally an island. 🙂 Here, we have a peninsula in our late 40’s house. Ha ha. I’m sure that you will find that landing space helpful as you unload things from the refrigerator etc. My mother was always adamant about having an island in her home, and she was right. 🙂

      Hi Joy, actually I love peninsula islands. Tbh, I prefer them as that’s what my grandmother’s kitchen had and I have super fond memories of it been the place where homemade Christmas cookies or special cakes cooled. It also was the prep space for the overflow at Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. The late 40s early 50’s house I lived in for part of my teen years had one as well. Our kitchen here has a separate prep counter along the one wall which works well, especially when I’m baking.

        When we did some remodeling years ago, I didn’t want to lose it, so my father added bookshelf on one end for my cookbooks rather than the rounded shelves. We left the drawers. We also still have the original scalloped trim around the upper kitchen cabinets. It has worked for us for a number of years. 🙂

    Dear Jeanne and the Sofa Sisters,

    Happy May 1! I could not let this day pass without saying hello. I am (pretend) dancing around the Maypole with you all.

    Jeanne, your island will be just perfect. I can’t wait to see it completed.

    Thank you all for your good wishes and prayers. I am doing much better. I still have limited time using “screens” so I use an hour glass (15 minutes) when I am on the computer. I am just now able to watch a little TV. I think that Perry Mason broke up with me because I abandoned him (laugh).

    I will probably be lurking around the room before I can sit on the sofa full time again. Thanks for saving my seat!

      Hi Dorothy,
      I’m so glad to hear from you and Happy May Day! I was hoping you’d be back but I had a poem all ready to go and will post it. I’m happy to hear you are doing much better.

    2. Charlotte Trayer

      So good to hear from you again, Dorothy!!

      Perry Mason is one of our favorite guests here. We like both series (the early black/white ones and the more recent ones, with an older Perry), but I rather prefer the more recent ones, esp. the interaction between him and Della!

      1. Dorothy in PA and the World

        Dear Charlotte, I like all things Perry (smile). I remember watching him in the 1950s while sitting on the sofa with my father. My dad could always guess “who done it.” I love Della also.

  6. 🌹🪻🌸HAPPY MAYDAY SOFA SISTERS!🌼💐🥀
    Looks like many of us made little baskets to take to the neighbors. My kids did make some at school but it doesn’t seem to be a “thing” these days. Glad you can pretend celebrate Dorothy.
    Your island will be so handy Jeanne. It is small but will do the job…I like Linda’s idea of adding a shelf part way down. Some items take up too much space in the cupboard. The islands in all the HGTV remodels lately are SO BIG. Walking around it all the time could get tedious. You and George are always thinking up something clever. Have a good week!

    HAPPY MAY DAY to all my Sofa Sisters 🌹🌷🍄🌾🌞
    I remember doing the woven paper May baskets in school and I did them with my daughter also.

    May-Day Song

    The moon shines bright, and the stars give a light
    In a little time it will be day;
    The Lord our God, He calls upon us all
    And bids us awake and pray.

    We have been rambling all the night
    And almost all the day;
    And now returned back again
    We have brought you a branch of May.

    A branch of May we have brought you,
    And at your door it stands;
    It is but a sprout,
    But it’s well budded out
    By the work of our Lord’s hands.

    The hedges and trees they are so green,
    As green as any leek;
    Our heavenly Father he watered them
    With his heavenly dew so sweet

    The heavenly gates are open wide,
    Our paths are beaten plain
    And if a man be not too far gone,
    He may return again.

    The moon shines bright and the stars give a light,
    A little before it is day;
    So God bless you all, both great and small,
    And send you a joyful May!”

    I’m glad you like the Arbor day poem, Barbara. Here’ s the May Day one. Both are from my Poetry book illustrated by Joan Walsh Anglund that I shared.

    Your island will be very nice, Jeanne, and a helpful extra counter space.

      Dear Laura, thank you for posting this lovely poem. It is definitely uplifting.
      Thank you also for your good wishes. I hope you had a lovely May 1.
