Thank goodness I stayed up a little late last night to get Addy’s dress set ready to go on Ebay Thursday evening, or it might not have happened… If you want to see the listing on Ebay, you can click the picture of her at the right side bar or you can click HERE.
Look what my hubby came home with today… our hens are molting right now and we are only getting 2 or 3 eggs a day… so he was thinking maybe it was time to start a “new batch” of hens… They were trying to get rid of them at Rural King and only selling them for $1.00! He’s always ready to pick up a few more… the only trouble is, you can’t mix the new ones with the bigger hens, so keeping them separated until these get 3 or 4 months old is the problem… but he’ll get it figured out… He got 6 Golden Comets, 2 Buff Orpingtons, 2 Sapphire Gems and 2 Amberlinks. At least he “thinks” that’s what he got… they had put them all in one big tub and they weren’t sure… he might know in a few weeks…
We’ve got them set up in the brooder box, with a heat lamp, in the sitting room…
Here is a short video of them…
…sorry, one more short video… I love watching new baby chicks run around in the brooder box.
Barbara, I wasn’t thinking when I first posted this and hope it doesn’t cause you pain. I’m so sorry to hear about Chelsey… Please forgive me if this was in poor taste to use this today…
Reuben has a vet appointment tomorrow, so we had to give him a hair cut. I wish you could have seen us… It’s like trying to wrestle a mountain lion… he HATES HATES HATES to get his hair cut… we have to put a muzzle on him because he hates it so much… he growls and snarls and snaps at us… it’s the only time he gets angry… he doesn’t like his legs being touched and the hair grows so long on his feet, he looks like a Clydesdale horse! (Only Reuben’s get all matted and curly!)
My hubby uses a pair of clippers on him, and then it’s my turn with the scissors to get his feet and face. Trying to work with a pair of scissors and clip around his feet gives him quite the choppy look, but at least they are trimmed…
My pictures aren’t the best because it was dark in the living room when I took these.
Well, I have my “chicks” and my hubby has his… :o)
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Congrats on the successful auction of “Oh oh October!” And now Addy’s pretty dress is up. As I’ve probably said, I’m not a “brown person”, but I really do like this dress!
Such fun to see the new chicks!! Yes, doesn’t every sitting room need a brooder box?!!
Poor Reuben…having to get his hair cut….Has he forgiven you yet?
Barbara, I’m so sorry about your little Chelsy; our little Molly has been gone for over 30 years, and there are still times I miss her, but that first few months was the worst.
Joy, I enjoyed reading about your latest dolly adventures! So glad the “lost” was found! Maybe James was just exploring his new neighborhood?! 😂🤣😂
Kathie, regarding that velveteen coat that has a fold line from where the hem was: do you have some narrow braid or trim that you could apply over it? If nothing else, maybe a simple embroidered trim–say, two or three rows, close together, of something like back stitch, chain stitch or something like that? Or maybe a single row of feather stitch or cross stitch might work. You could repeat the trim or embroidery on the sleeves and/or collar/neckline, to make it look like a design feature!
I remember one year at Easter my mother was trying to get another year out of Beth’s and my spring coats. She let down the bottom hem and the hems on the sleeves and used braid to cover the creases. Then she added some of the braid around the collar of my coat. I don’t remember if she embellished my sister’s coat further. I thought I had a picture but all I have is the one the year before without the braid. It was likeb having new coats for the price of a few yards of braid and they looked wonderful.
Today’s blog has shades of Dr. Doolittle here! Pets are such a treasure and they give us so much joy! The hard part is when they pass away, and Barbara, my condolences to you on Chelsy’s passing. I have gone through that too many times!
George’s chickens are so cute, and they live in the lap of luxury with that heat lamp and inside a nice house too! Boy, was it chilly and windy yesterday! I think they would have blown away if they were left outside!
Ruben looks very handsome with his new haircut! If only he knew!! I am sure that the memory of getting that haircut will be over soon,….until the next time! Kudos to you and George to be able to do it yourself. I can’t imagine what a dog groomer goes through to get a pet groomed that doesn’t want to be there! We have always had cats, so they do their own grooming, thankfully!
I used to cut our Cocker Spaniel’s fur with scissors because he was scared of the sound of the razor. He could get pretty matted up with burs, too.
I can relate to this. Chelsy hated for her feet to get wet so if she could she would walk next to the house where all the dried burrs were. Even with her hair cut short she would still get them stuck in her hair, especially her ears and she didn’t like anyone messing with her ears. I would have to get David to pull them out because his skin was tougher than mine.
I lost part of my comment, but it will be like Easter at your house this winter with the chicks there 🙂
I knew that sitting room wasn’t for sitting. 🙂 Cute chicks. How long until they begin laying? That is if they are all girls. 🙂
Around here, we’re working on the playhouse roof. Well, it used to be the playhouse for the girls until they grew up. Now, it is my she-shed after a renovation some years ago. We still need to jack up the back corner and put in a new pier. Looks like that recent quake made it slip a bit. 🙂 The exterior is due for paint as well, but probably won’t happen until spring. Looks like we may have rain coming in. Maybe next week. 🙂
Never a dull day at your house Jeanne😉 I guess I never gave a thought to the price of baby chicks…so if a 1.00 is the clearance price what is the retail☺️
I hope your fond memories of Chelsey keep you going for a bit Barbara🥴
My sons dog got a skunked yesterday…oh my what a mess. He came in the house right away 😳. Luckily it was a bit windy so opening all the windows helped…but of course it was a bit stinky outside too.
The pretty brown plaid dress has a bid already too.
Thanks for the hints on the velveteen hemline Charlotte. Another thing they did was trim the front bottom corner of the coat to eliminate bulk of lining but it makes a little square missing. The dress under it is so cute I have thought of shortening the coat to a jacket…about hip length. Still thinking about that😵💫
Jeanne, no problem with the post. It takes a lot to cause me pain or offend me so you’re good to go. But it did remind me of Sean raising chickens when he was in junior high and high school. He didn’t have a brooder box per se but created his own – in my craft room. I was glad when they were out of there. No matter how he tried the smell was always there. But they were so cute to watch. I loved watching them when they were older too but it didn’t take long to discover the pecking order and it could be pretty nasty.
I think I’m to the point now where I can read Laura’s poem without a box of tissues and I made it through Chorale rehearsal last night and telling a few people with dry eyes so I think I’m moving on bit by bit. Chelsy had her own shelf in the pantry, and I need to clean that out today. Jason and Sean both have dogs and Chelsy willed some of her things to her doggie cousins. I think the biggest problem I’m going to have is when we go to pack up for our trip. Chelsy had an octagonal collapsible kennel that she slept in on trips because her normal “room” was too cumbersome to transport. She took to it right away. It was her space away from home. It was black and hot pink. Then we bought her a black and hot pink polka dot tote for her food, treats, etc. Seeing those is going to be sad.
I want to thank all my sofa sisters so much for all their kind words through this difficult time. You might say I’ve been feeling the love for all of us. Thanks for all the tea and sympathy (that’s a Scottish thing).
Guess what just showed up on my doorstep? Well you probably don’t have to guess. It is Amelia Dawn. I hoped to get her before I left so the boys would not have to worry about her. L’il Dreamer Ashlynn will be here Tuesday and they will watch out for her. Plus David has some things coming in so I’m glad the boys will be here all day every day. No way to sneak in any dolly children while the renovations are taking place. The guys meet the mail truck.
After a bit of a dry spell and a burn ban being declared this week, we finally got some rain. Like gully washer rain. It stopped just long enough for me to get in my car and leave for rehearsal. Definitely answered prayer. Evidently shortly after I left it started up again. I was getting the cold shoulder from some of my Chorale buddies who live there in Bellville. They didn’t get a drop. I reminded them that usually they get the rain and we go begging
After I posted to Barbara I had to do some other things and never made it back here yesterday.
I enjoyed reading your latest caper, Joy. Smuggling three in at once must have been a challenge what with bounding up and down step. maybe that’s why James held off a bit.
I’m glad the poem helped some, Barbara. Maybe you could put all of the special mementos (toys, fur, leash etc) in Chelsy’s pretty tote? For me, I’m never completely over it. My first pet, my childhood Yorkie, has been gone since 1993 and I still miss her as well as our second Yorkie, Collie mix, and my precious black kitty. I can be brought to tears in a matter of second as in right now.
The chicks are so cute. The “sitting” room serves a great purpose- sitting and watching chicks. I am a bit surprised that you have Buffs in with others since they are so timid and easily hurt. A lady’s blog I’ve followed since homeschool day just hatched another round of guineas and ducks. Her granddaughters were loving watching the ducks swim in the bathroom sink.
Rueben looks cute with his puppy cut. that’s too bad he snaps and growls. It’s probably too late now, but he needed his legs touched and handled more as a puppy. Our dogs never minded being touched anywhere. I.e., Cats aren’t suppose to like their tummies touched, but I’ve trained all my kitties to accept it
( and almost all were adult rescues0 and a few absolutely love tummy rubs. I happen to be able to pill a cat without issue also. Can you believe that? 🙂
Chelsy didn’t like to be groomed. We think it might be because we got her when she was 10 months old and the person who had her never had her groomed until she was ready to sell her. It was rather a sad story in a way. You might say we “rescued” her without going to the SPCA. The people had three small children and the two dogs (Chelsy and a brother). The husband bought the dogs as Christmas gifts for his wife but she really was overwhelmed with them and three children. They were selling the dogs because they were losing their home and moving to a small apartment. The two dogs were a mere week away from going to the pound. They did manage to sell both of them the same day. Another couple wanted the boy so we took the girl. With her long hair and not being groomed for months, it would not have been a good experience for her. David always did her trimming and I did the bathing. DILDionne clipped her nails because she was confident enough to do it. She lived next door for six years so it was convenient. As I got older and had more trouble kneeling down to bathe her I got this wonderful raised doggie bathtub. Not sure what I’m going to do with that. Maybe use it to store my dolly props. It’s really quite nice looking and I’d never get back what I paid for it and it’s almost brand new.
