Before I show you what I’ve sewn today, I wanted to show you this picture of one of the baby chicks… She is the biggest of all the ones in the brooder box right now and apparently she was playing the “chicken” version of King of the Hill… only she was playing “Queen of the water bottle!”
I thought the last dress was going to be for Molly, but that didn’t work out when Addy tried it on. Molly has given me strict orders that NO ONE can try this dress on but her. “I think it’s going to be fine, Molly!”
Everyone loved the dress in the pattern I recently showed with the plaid skirt and the white blouse and black vest…
…so I decided to make it! Here’s what I’ve gotten done so far…
The white embroidered cotton fabric makes such a pretty blouse. I’ve only gotten the shoulder seams sewn and the sleeves in and that’s all so far…
I added a narrow dainty white lace to the edges of the sleeves…
Then, I picked my favorite red plaid for the skirt. It’s a wonderful cotton homespun like fabric that has the prettiest shimmer to it. I really wish I could send everyone a 2″ square of this fabric so you could see how beautiful it truly is! It’s my ALL TIME favorite red plaid, hands down! My pictures don’t even begin to do it justice.
I have my basting stitches at the top but I haven’t pulled them up yet.
So it will look like this… I’m planning on making the blouse separate and then have the black vest part and the skirt as a jumper… one piece.
I made a dress from this fabric once before, back in 2015. Maybe you remember it? I do know who won it, and maybe they’d like to tell you how pretty the plaid fabric is…
Well, I better get to bed…
Have a wonderful Saturday and weekend and I’ll see you Monday!
Blessings, Jeanne
The 2015 nation is beautiful. This time it will be even more delightful.
This latest outfit will be such a beautiful classic. That eyelet is stunning all by itself so that is another plus. The vest is cute and we know the skirt will be fantastic in that fabric.
The chick is a lively one…it will be fun to watch. I hope that chick will decide to be a hen so some eggs will happen but this day and age who knows?
Off to finish the show choir costume…the first fitting seemed to work….thank heavens
Have a fun Saturday and Sunday 🥹
What a bold little chick that is! I wonder if she’ll end up at the top of the pecking order of this group?
Oh, I’m so glad you are going to make that outfit for Molly! I think I have some of that plaid fabric (and a couple of other, similar ones), and it really does have a lovely shiimmer! The blouse fabric is beautiful, too!
I think I do remember that 2015 dress–if I wasn’t on the blog yet, I may have seen it one time when you did a retrospective of dresses you’ve made, something like that.
I see Addy’s dress has TWO bids already!! Woohoo!!
Barbara, I’m so glad to hear that your Amelia Dawn has arrived! Early is certainly better than late!
Molly is going to be SO happy that she will get the next dress, make that the FIRST Christmas dress for this year! I can’t think of a better dress for her, to get the season moving along! Yes, I do remember the one you made in 2015, and it only gets better each time it appears, since it is a classic look that never goes out of style!
The blouse material is so pretty and that plaid is perfect for the holidays! I can imagine the shimmer effect that makes it look so festive! I can’t wait to see how you tweak this one to make it better, if you ever could!
Looks like “Queenie” is rallying for pure spring water, not that cheep, cheep stuff!
Molly’s dress will be a dream. I hope you added lace at the neckline like the pattern picture, do double breasted shiny buttons and a black waist ribbon. That Christmas plaid needs to be the focal point. A traditional white blouse is so versatile for any time of year. I’m sure this will be popular.
I was kind of hoping for a separate vest, blouse, and skirt, but back in those days, the whole thing actually came as one piece sometimes. I had something similar. It’s very sweet. I’m going to like this one without the gold. And perhaps, you might have time to make a dress in solid red like the one on the pattern left. That one would be great for the winter holiday and Valentine’s Day as well. 🙂
Some of us managed to get the latest RRFF kids this morning. Charlotte and George in their school uniforms. See Rubyredfashionfriendstoys under special editions to take a look. 🙂
Are we sure that the queen chick is actually female? I guess someone would have figured it out though before purchasing. 🙂 Looks like a very healthy chick. So fun to see them progressing.
Have a great weekend everyone. 🙂
I goofed. It’s Rubyredtoys.com Sorry.
Didn’t get the Charlotte and George connection until I saw them in their uniforms. I guess to avoid having to license them they just gave them wigs with different hair colors and style than their namesakes and avoided their full names. Although George looks pretty much right-on. They are the cutest. My son looks so much like Prince William. They are four months apart in age. Once there was a picture on a magazine when William was 13. My daughter thought it was a picture of Sean. Today Sean has more hair than William but they still look a lot alike and so do their kids.
Barbara, my brother’s two boys were born the same months/years as William and Harry! It was interesting to see how they grew, and compare them to the royals!!
I’m so glad you’re going to make that outfit for Molly. My mother made me that same one when I was in 4th grade and I absolutely loved it. The skirt was a quilted red print and the vest was a coordinating sold red. I think I wore it every other day I loved it so much.
I didn’t win that auction, but I did ask for and get a duplicate outfit. Stacy, my #28

wears it. She’s the one who likes interesting fabrics, since her family owns a fabric/needlework store in Hannibal, MO.
Saying the fabric is homespun gives you an idea of the texture, and I can’t think of a better word, but the fabric is not thick or rough — the 3rd picture from the bottom gives the best idea of its texture and shimmer. It’s a beautiful Christmas fabric.
I agree with Joy about liking to see the dress on the left made up as well, though I was thinking of Thanksgiving and maybe for Courtney.
Love the “queen of the water bottle.” It’s fun to see them grow up.
Cute picture of the chicken watching over the water bottle. Since egg laying was the primary reason for purchasing them, I’m assuming they are all hens. But these days who knows.
I love every view on this pattern. Molly’s Christmas dress is going to be lovely. I think I have that plaid fabric. I made a dress for me one year using the plaid for the skirt and a green velour for the top of the dress. I still have remnants and I can hear my MA 18″ girls saying hey mom, you haven’t made us a fancy dress in a few years get to it.
I looked at the pattern again and saw it was a McCall’s. I have printed out all the Betsy McCall paper dolls that were in the magazines over the years and I think these dresses were in one of the magazines. I need to go look.
Congratulations Joy on all your new additions to the family. Charlotte and George are precious. I would love to have them but I seem to have as much as I can handle for the moment. I thought I had all the stands bought that I needed but Amelia Dawn had to borrow Mini Maru Choe’s for a little while. She needed to be on her feet to meet all her new dolly friends and have quality time with her sister Evianna.
My day will be consumed with preparations for the trip Monday. My AT&T internet is still not working and I can’t deal with it right now so I’m back on my previous one. Thankfully I hadn’t cancelled it. I have bills to pay and reservations to make so I will set something up for next week. Sean said he would handle it for me. Ugh!! I’ve just been told by the man of house that I have to get up with the chickens Monday so we can be on the road asap. No!! We are going to load up the car with what we can Sunday evening because it is supposed to be raining Monday morning.
Hi Barbara, I read your comments yesterday and I’m so glad you rescued Chelsy. I’m sure she had a wonderful, happy life with you! Yes, when you get them a bit older they have a few things that may or may not be able to be ironed out. Our Collie mix who we rescued off of the driveway and was thought to be about nine months old 🙂 would let you do anything for her (teeth brushing, loved to be bathed and groomed, nail clipping) and was so sweet and gentle. She was terrified of stairs though and could never go upstairs to the bedrooms. Tornado warnings were especially fun because they required strapping her to my daughter’s short plastic sled and sliding her to the basement. Afterwards, one of us had to push and another pull to get her back upstairs. Then the poor girl would be sick to her stomach for a few hours. We were sure someone was very unkind in her past.
I had a wonderful wicker set (two chairs and a settee) in my breezeway/sunroom. Chelsy was so traumatized when we got her that she chewed the arms off my wicker chairs. But she claimed the settee for hers at the start and never chewed on that at all.
Be thinking of you on your trip. But, not at the up with the chickens time. Sounds like a fun trip. And maybe your internet will be all set upon your return. 🙂
I remember the construction of that dress for Molly back in 2015. Looking forward to seeing the reprise one.
The little “Queen of the Water Bottle” chick is so cute.
Oh, congrats on your Amelia Dawn, Barbara. How nice you get to see her before you go.
