Ruby Red Fashion Friends, Violette, gets a “hat makeover!”

HI everyone,
I hope you had a wonderful weekend… we sure did… mid 70’s and a slight breeze!

I was very busy trying to finish up some things… like repairing 18 more window washer covers! (Can I say UGH just between us friends?) Not my favorite thing to do, but it’s for a guy at church and I didn’t think he had so many for me to do… I had to repair the window washing covers that fit over his T framed tool. Some needed new Velcro and some needed the ends hand stitched where the wear and had torn holes in the thick mop like fabric. Anyway, that’s enough on that… here’s a picture of my pile when I was done…

Cheryl asked Friday or Saturday about the beret that Violette is wearing… she complimented me on how cute “she” looks in it, but wondered what do people do with a hat that big if they don’t have a “fluffy” haired doll like her… what if they have a doll with straight hair like Stella or Sarah? So I set out to solve the problem… and I “sort of did!” At least for this set. I do have another way I can maybe do it if I make another hat for Violette, which I’m sure I will!

Anyway, this was how Violette looked in the two berets.

And now, this is how Stella and Sarah looked in them…

This is what I did… I took a piece of black cord elastic and looped a snap on the ends of it and then tied that elastic in the middle with the snaps being about 3″ apart… I then stitched a piece of trim on the inside of the hat band and tucked the elastic cord with the snaps on it, in between so a snap stuck out each end… then I sewed a snap that corresponded with that snap about an inch away from the one on the cord… when you want the hat tighter, you just snap the snap on the end of the cord to the snap sewn to the band.. let me show you…

The hats “kind of scrunch up” but it’s sort of like in a straight line… (That’s why I have a different idea for the next hat with a band… I’ll run the elastic inside the band and when it’s stretched to snap to the snaps, it will gather up more evenly.) The back looks a little square, but the fronts look nice on Stella and Sarah now.

Here they are with the hats modified for them…

Do you think that will work for this time?

Well, that’s it for today… I’ll work more tomorrow on getting pictures of the last 2 new things you haven’t seen…

See you then,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Wow that was quite a job you did on those window washer covers! I hope your friend offered to wash some windows for you in appreciation of all you hard work!

I was wondering if elastic thru a casing might work to adjust the berets for varying amounts of hair. You came up with a good solution for the already-made berets, and I think incorporating a variation of it in a beret as you are constructing it will work even better!! Yay, Jeanne!!

    1. Hi Charlotte,
He and his family are moving to Nashville TN in November so he is already working there. He left after church yesterday so guess I’ll have to wash my own windows.
I guess like minds think alike. I’m ready to give the new plan for elastic a try.
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Jeanne, I just love your “can do” approach to anything you encounter! If there is anything you can’t do, I’d like to know what it is! All those window washer covers would have done me in for the day! Kudos to you, and I hope somebody washes a few windows for you!

Yes, it was a beautiful weather weekend, but your “slight breeze” was not so slight here! We had sustained winds of 15 MPH and gusts at 25! But, it blew any leaves we had in the yard completely away!

As for as the hat, again, you can do it all! Perfect save!

    1. Hi Linda,
Those washer covers did just about do me in. I was SICK of them by the time I got to the last one!
It’s been pretty gusty here today…more so than I noticed yesterday…
Glad you approve of the beret save! Thanks

I think Jeanne is a very kind person. Had someone brought me more of those covers to repair, I would have given him an estimation of the cost/time to fix. I do hope that he can come and wash some of your windows in lieu of a bill.
I think most would be displaying their dolls from the front, so the gathering on the hand band at the back shouldn’t be a problem. I think I might like to see the gathered version on Violette too. 🙂
More fog this morning. Keeps the heat away for sure.
    Have a great week everyone.

    1. Hi Joy,
Actually it was a pretty tall order and my hubby told me I needed to charge him. It was hard to come up with a price, but I gave him a bill and he paid me on the spot with PayPal. :o)

I should cinch up the hats and show them on Violette too… she does have an enormous amount of hair.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Great save on the already made hats. Your idea was a good one and your plan for the future even better. I agree with Joy that most of us would be displaying our dolls from the front so how the beret looks in the back would not be a problem, but it doesn’t really look bad since I’ve seen a lot of hats with elastic just across the back.

Had a real disappointment this morning. I opened my e-mail and there was a message from Magalie about my new LD Amelia Dawn. But there was no picture. I think we had this problem once before and hopefully by the end of the day I will see a picture of her. She said she is beautiful.

    1. Thanks Barbara,
I’m glad you think the hats will be okay this time “as is.” I wanted to see what everyone thought before going any farther.
I hope you’ve been able to see your new girl by now…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Ingenious solution for the berets, Jeanne! Works and looks great!!

Your giving heart always touches me. Truly wonderful of you to fix those yucky window-washing covers.

    1. Hi Cheryl,
I’m glad you mentioned the hats being too big on some dolls or I might not have thought of that until it was too late. Then some dolls might have missed out!
I’m glad you like the fixes!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I kind of wondered what the berets would be like on a smaller wig so that is a good solution☺️ She is sure one modern, pretty doll. The purse and boots and hat are
just what makes your ensembles so awesome.

I was working on hemming a formal for one of my granddaughters yesterday…it needed to be 6” shorter. It had a balloon hem. I told her what goes around comes around..my 8th grade graduation dress had a balloon hem….anyway it was tough cutting through the gathers and lining so grabbed my larger scissors. As I was measuring the skirt to cut off the extra I realized I had cut a slit in the skirt!😳😵‍💫 it was about a 4” v shaped slice. I took a piece of what was cut off and bonded it on the wrong side. I walked away to let it cool and try to figure out how I was going to tell her.. Was the cut on the back?….Oh heavens no….side front.🥴 Then took it in on the top…what I thought was to be a quick fix took all day. As I was putting it on a hanger I stepped back to see how bad the cut looked…. I couldn’t see it!!😉Whoopie!
It was a better fix than all the window washing covers you had to do 😵‍💫 Honestly he certainly didn’t understand the kind of seamstress you are! Like I read recently…it would be like asking Rembrandt to paint your garage. Have a good week!

    1. Hi Kathie,
Violette is truly a real beauty! I thought she might be too sad looking since she wasn’t painted with a smile, but I love her sweet innocent look!
Making a boo boo on something like a prom dress or a man’s suit puts real fear into a seamstress, doesn’t it? Been there, done that and hated every time I did!
But a good seamstress can always figure out a way to make something work…just like you did! Congrats!!
I have a wedding dress for a young girl that I’m going to try and fix this week. It lacks about 6″ meeting in the back where the zipper goes up. I’m going to figure out something because she LOVES this dress. I hope she’ll let me take some pictures because I’d like to document “whatever it is I’m going to figure out!!!”

      Thank you Kathie!
Sleep well tonight knowing you solved a huge problem today!!!
      Blessings, Jeanne
