This doll dress is determined to keep giving me grief!

As if the dress problems weren’t enough to deter me from getting this doll outfit finished, NOW the slip has begun to rub me the wrong way. All I wanted was a pretty coral slip in the ruffled fabric I already had, but it hasn’t gone as I planned. I LOVE this fabric and it goes so well with the flowers in the dress fabric, so it was certain I was going to make a pretty little dolly slip that would just peek out from under Samantha’s dress.

Well, first let me show you the slip… This is what it looked like in the first picture…

If I took my fingers and pulled the slip out it looked nice, but wouldn’t stay…

I wasn’t too impressed because it was too flat and droopy looking… It didn’t have enough body to hold out the dress like I wanted. So I added another ruffle of the mesh fabric around the bottom section…and it “looked” pretty…

Then came the moment of truth when I tried the dress on over the slip…

BONK! Not even in the ball park!

The mesh fabric is SO soft, it just does what it wants… and isn’t even like a stiffer netting would be…

I held my hand under the ruffled slip and pushed it against the dress and it looked like this… what I was looking for…

But unless I put a crinoline under her dress, or skip the slip and use one of the ruffles cut off the fabric and stitch it to the hem of the dress, I’m not sure this is going to work…

Samantha was pooped from all the trying on and tugging and not being happy that it wasn’t showing, so she laid down on my cutting table and said, “Go to bed, you’ll think of something else…” What a nice dolly!

Don’t forget about the Virtual Doll Convention… Here is a link to a promotion I received for it… if you want, you can use the link Dorothy sent as well…

My thoughts….well, you know, we used to square dance, and although Lots of petticoats (crinolines/cancans) are kind of stiff and hold the dresses out quite a lot, not all of them are! At first, I was a little disappointed by one of the soft chiffon petticoats I’d bought; it was the colors I’d wanted (red/white/blue), but it didn’t hold that skirt out very far. However, I soon learned I rather Liked that softer look, because when I would grab my skirt when we promenaded, that soft fluffy ruffle looked so pretty inside that handful of skirt. And when I twirled–Wow! I decided that, although Usually I preferred the stiffer petticoat, sometimes the soft one is a good look, too.

So…this is a long way of saying, maybe the soft look is okay anyway, if you can get the length where you want it. Or maybe there’s something that’s somewhere between this softer stuff and that stiffer stuff, and you could use that underneath instead? Or perhaps gather the ruffles a little more (that is, the ruffle strip starts out longer), which would add some fullness? Time to experiment, I guess!

Today I took pictures of Cora and Maisie in their little animal-print shortalls, riding the bear (statue) outside our local library. This was for a photo challenge in a LD group I belong to. I will try to get the pictures to you soon, Jeanne, in case you’d like to share them. I still need to get the rest of the girls into their overalls, and get a group picture. I don’t think I have very many short-sleeved t-shirts yet, so they may all be wearing long sleeves, but, Oh, well!!

      Dear Charlotte,
We are ALL eager to see your pictures of Cora and Maisie…AND that apron! With Rebecca and Karn visiting and the birthday event, Jeanne will be glad to have them, too.
      Have a wonderful weekend.

I think sleeping on this one may be the key. In my humble opinion, the bright pink slip doesn’t seem to go with the demure dress. I think I would go with a regular not dropped waist slip in white or beige. Then, I’d add some tiny brown trim on the top and bottom of the new waistband to give it some pazazz. Maybe a tiny bunch of brown and pink flowers at the waist? If you wish to leave the slip, maybe scrunch up the skirt in a few places and add a decoration on each. Then the slip wouldn’t look like an after affect, but an added feature. How about a cute pair of lace trimmed tap pants under it all? I’m sure whatever you decide will make it lovely. 🙂
Here, I keep waiting for a package from Macy’s. Finally arrived in our town and then has been sitting for several days saying waiting for acceptance? What is that? This morning, it says it is back in San Mateo, a couple of hours away and that delivery is expected here by 9:00PM. Now, I’m really confused?? Hope the post office can process the package correctly and deliver my new undies. 🙂
Hope everyone has a lovely weekend. 🙂

Ummm, Joy. Is this REALLY a package from Macy’s this time? I had to ask, because…
Jeanne, I like this dress so much, but have nothing to say about the petticoat. You will figure it out beautifully. I am wondering about that selvage (?) trim on the sleeves…repeat it on the top and bottom of that “belt”?
Are the kids there yet? Have a super duper visit all week long, and have an outrageous cake on your birthday. 🎂🎂🎂🎊🎈🎉

  3. I’m just no help with this except to give you sympathy when some things don’t work like you want them to🥴 The fluff is so pretty and love the color but how to make it behave is troublesome. You will figure it out!👍🏻
The doll I’m working on is my current “pain in the tush”. When she is mailed and has arrived and opened then we will celebrate. My “ other person” who has issues with balance stumbled and fell on the basket by my chair that had this doll in it. I was just doing some finishing handwork …..after that a perfectly good leg was in 5 pieces ( the dolls leg, not hubby’s 😉). Repaired it and painted it but it didn’t match the original leg so that didn’t go well. Decided to paint both..the good one and repaired one….. but then the arms ( that were just fine) didn’t match the newly painted legs….so repainted them as well. Giving all the limbs a few days to dry so they can get final sprays and attach the head.
ENJOY YOUR BIRTHDAY! No working…just have fun with your family🤗

  4. To me, it looks like her slip is accidentally showing. And maybe the colors look better in person, but the slip doesn’t seem to match the dress.
