I guess you all know I’m up to my elbows in wedding plans, but I thought I’d open this up to all of you and ask what’s on your agenda for today? Anyone doing anything exciting?
Chat with each other all you like!
See you Monday!
Blessings, Jeanne

I’ll be cleaning the church tomorrow (Sat.–from my viewpoint, it’s still Friday night! LOL) and then our son is coming over to help us with a couple of projects.
Today I spent the day at the fair. I had two 4-H contests to judge, top seamstress and needlework. Since we had no fair at all last year due to covid, and since some of our most active 4-H kids have “aged out”, we don’t have as many participants as we have some years. But we still have some! Cara was the only top seamstress competitor–the kids bring things all cut out and ready to sew. Interfacing can be fused or applied, but all sewing has to be done in the contest. She has been in 4H for quite a few years, and competes in several areas besides sewing and needlework. She made a top with a shirred midriff; after 3 rows of shirring (sewing with elastic thread in the bobbin–result is stretchy gathers) her machine decided it didn’t want to do that any more. I suggested that it was perfectly fine to make a “design decision” to leave it at 3 rows, rather than all 7, which she thought was a good idea, too! The top turned out really cute!
The needlework competition could be any kind of needlework. Cara embroidered a design on a tea towel (for her hope chest–I didn’t know kids these days even knew about hope chests!!) and Emma crocheted a crown!! Both girls did very well.
I was a 4H kid myself–it’s where I learned to sew–and fully enjoy every contest I judge. I have to brag a bit–one of “my” girls from a few years back is now the 4-H sewing superintendent, and doing a terrific job!!
Well, ladies, as I write this it is raining here, actually storming, and the lights have flickered a bit! It is still dark out, so I lit a big candle just for safety! I am SO glad Rebecca’s wedding is tomorrow instead of today! As you might know, I live fairly close to Carbondale, it is maybe an hour and half away. But tomorrow is supposed to be fine, and I hope, not too wet!
Charlotte, that is so interesting about the sewing competition having to do the sewing IN the competition. I too, was a member of a 4-H club, and my mother was our leader. Did you live in a rural area and do you live in one now? It seems 4-H was started for rural area kids, but it has moved closer to the bigger cities now. I mostly remember the flower growing competition during my days with the 4-H , although our county fair, where we showed off our skills , did include sewing, painting, etc. After I became an art teacher in our local school, I was also given the title of Judge, and judged many a competition. I still have my “judge” pin, and fondly remember those days!
Laura and Jeanne, thank you for telling me about the fabric. I want to make a few shawls for Kirsten, with fri going along the edges, so now know what to look for. Now if only this rain would stop!
Hi Linda,
I grew up in a small town in a farming community in Upper Michigan. Even though we moved to the Seattle area almost 61 years ago, I still consider the UP to be “back home”. Yes, I still have a few relatives living there, including my 91-year-old uncle.
I don’t remember any contests like that when I was in 4H, either. We dropped our garments off to be judged (no interview judging was available back then, as I recall) and then, just like magic, the next day or so they were all on display in the HS gym! Later that afternoon/evening we modeled our garments in a fashion show.
My best friend’s mom was our 4H leader, and taught me to sew (although my mom did sew quite a lot back then, she wisely held off teaching me because I would have had to “unlearn” some of the things she taught me and learn the 4H way to do them! (My best friend told me tonight she didn’t remember contests like that, either, by the way. We have been best friends since 1952!)
No, I live in a suburban area, just north of Seattle. However, if you drive a few miles east, you start getting into more rural areas, and smaller cities/towns. We do have some clubs in some of the bigger towns like Everett, though–they’re not all rural.
You know, 4H is much more than sewing and cooking these days! It’s also various animals (farm and pet), as well as cooking, baking, robotics, computers, fine arts, photography, performing arts, etc.
Good morning! Today, we’re headed south to visit the grands and celebrate the youngest’s 6th birthday. They’ve had a busy summer with swim meets and soccer tournaments so, we haven’t seen them since Father’s Day in June. Will be fun to catch up and see their other grandparents as well. We’ve already put in our sandwich order and we’re all eating outside as long as the smoke is at bay.
Still working on some outfits for the RRFF girls. One is together but still needs the lace sewn on. Another is cut out and pinned, and the decorating has finally been decided, and the last partially cut and still decisions to make. Wish I had more time to get them together as siblies Callie and Rory are also clamoring for an outfit too.
I guess the relatives have arrived in Carbondale and probably Karn’s mother as well. Haven’t heard anything about his side of the family. I’m sure today there will be lots of last minute details to complete. Hope the forecast holds for a sunny day tomorrow. Lots of luck to everyone. And take care Jeanne, the wedding will be amazing. 🙂
Not much happening here. I extracted two new plants that had died from the pots they were in. I’ve never lost plants before but these didn’t survive the time recently when I injured my back and couldn’t stand for too long. The 50 or so orchid plants are tough and are fine. The back is feeling better. I’ll replace the plants over the weekend. Labor Day indeed!
I cannot believe the source for the sandals! I can probably find something like it for $150 at Nordstrom’s.
It’s very exciting to think of all that’s going on surrounding the wedding. Everything sounds well under control and it should be a wonderful day tomorrow! Best wishes to new bride and groom and the ones from 40 years ago!
Attended my sweet sister-in-law’s brothers funeral today. A sign of our age that funerals are more and more often.🥴 He was the towns most famous attorney. Was a Vietnam Veteran, worked for the Secret Service, before becoming a very busy lawyer. He often defended the worst of us but felt everyone needed a good defense.
So glad Jeanne’s weekend will be the opposite….a fun wedding…a beautiful bride and seeing family for a happy reason
Kathie, I am so sorry to hear this. My deepest sympathy to you and the entire family.
Hugs,
Sally
Kathie I’m so sorry to hear your sad news. Definitely not the way you want to spend your day. I remember my father-in-law lamenting the loss of so many friends and family as he aged. Now I’m where he was back then. I am now the oldest living grandchild of my grandparents thirteen. Three have predeceased me, two were born within a month of me. But I still have contact through Facebook and Classmates.com with many of my classmates who are definitely alive and kicking and leading really full lives, especially the one who lives in the Florida Keys. So I keep that in mind. Blessings on you and your family as you face this difficult time. You are in my prayers.
Well my Saturday has been and gone!! It is Sunday morning here and I plan to join a friend at her online church service at 10 am. I spent Saturday in my sewing room trying to work out the best way to make a particular block. It didn’t go so well! but I have managed to write a pattern and hopefully they will be able to follow it. It is for our Block of the Month next month, a Poinsettia block.
I really hope the weather cooperates for you Jeanne. Have a wonderful day.
Hello Sofa Sisters, today I had one of my regular tea dates with friends. Three of us took along our dolls. I can’t post a photo here but I will get one to Jeanne when things settle down for her. We talked about dolls and tea and solved all of the problems in the world (laugh).
News in the Doll World:
The Madame Alexander Doll Club is sponsoring its Fall Friendship Luncheons at several locations around the country. One might be near you. I am posting a link to the website below:
https://madc.online/pages/2021-fall-friendship-luncheon
Theriaults is having an auction on September 17 called Ten2Go. Each of its lots begins at $10. This is quite different from the gazillion dollar auctions they usually host. This is in person in Annapolis.

Wishing all of you a wonderful weekend!
Jeanne, I am sending big hugs your way.
Dorothy have you signed up for the auction of Dianna Effner’s doll collection? I imagine things will probably go for pricey amounts, but I’m going to give it a go anyway.
Hi Dorothy! thanks for sharing the link to the MADC luncheons.
Well, phoo….the nearest ones to me are in CA and maybe UT. Not a single one in Washington state or Oregon!! I could drive down to Portland, stay overnight and do a luncheon (as I have in the past for Mary Hoyer events), but, no, the Pacific NW has been neglected!!
Hope some of you gals will be able to attend, and share pictures!
Dear Charlotte, well here is another possibility. The Madame Alexander Doll Club convention will be in Spokane in June 2022. Maybe you can attend that. Here is the link to information:
https://madc.online/products/2022-convention-early-bird-registration
I am not sure that I will be going as I don’t fly. I could take the train but I think that might be a gazillion dollars. I am still investigating.
And speaking of Mary Hoyer, there is a Zoom MH doll club. You could join that. There’s no membership fee. It’s just a fun club overseen by Mary Lynne, Mary Hoyer’s granddaughter. It’s scheduled to meet again on September 26, after having a Summer hiatus. Send me an email and let me know if you are interested and I will put you in touch with the Zoom host.
Have a great Labor Day. I am preparing to veg out on the Hallmark Channel (laugh).
Dorothy, thanks for the links. I finally checked them out. The nearest to me is in Grapevine near Dallas. It’s a possibility so I’ll be checking into it. $3,000 for a Cissy?! Do people really get that much? I was telling David the other day how much I paid for my Heartstring Dolls when they were new and how much they are being sold for once they were no longer being sold. He determined that if I sold three of them it would fix our driveway. Needless to say he got the “stink eye” on that one.
I sure hope someone reads this because it is 10:10 p.m. here and I’m just now visiting the blog. What did I do today? I dressed about twenty dolls. I did the rest yesterday. Back-to-school for them is Tuesday. The day after Labor Day will always be back-to-school day in my mind. I discovered that in spite of all my sewing and buying, most of my girls are limited to only one or two outfits for school. It seems I’ve done most of the sewing for them for special things like Easter, Valentine’s Day or summer. I really need to get some outfits going for the upcoming colder months. I’m still planning on a winter outing photo shoot with sledding, building a snowman, etc. I did pick out a pattern to make a school dress with matching socks for my Siblie, Sydney. She will be going back to school in the outfit she arrived in, but she’s probably good to go here until late October. Then she might need something a little warmer.
Dear Barbara, hello. Yes, I did sign up for that. Thank you for telling us about it so we could sign up. I just want to stand in the shadows and see what is going on. I probably won’t be able to afford any of the dolls.
There was a beautiful Madame Alexander Cissy doll that sold on ebay for over $3,000! I was definitely not one of the bidders (laugh).
Oh my goodness, you dressed 20 dolls in one day! If I dress more than two, I have to sit down and take a break.
I am looking forward to seeing photos when you take them.
I’m up reading, Barbara!!
Well, you know, special occasion clothes are just more fun to make/buy!! That’s my excuse, anyway!! Haha….
I just thought I would write in case anyone was checking, but it looks like the sun will be out today in Carbondale! Our rainy day is past, and I think Rebecca’s wedding will be just fine! As I sit here and write this, I see blue skies and fluffy white clouds! Thank goodness!
Here Comes the Bride!💐🎼
Dear Linda, I think we are all still around celebrating with Jeanne. How wonderful for her and Rebecca and their family.
Enjoy your blue skies!
Well, it’s Sunday morning. I see, according to the Weather Channel, the rain has stopped in Carbondale, and the sun should be mostly out by 5, definitely by 6. The temperature looks like it will be a decent one. Cheers!
Jeanne, have the best wedding day ever, and all good wishes to Rebecca and Karn. Happy anniversary to you and George. A pat from Aunt Sal for Reuben, if you remember.
Sounds like some of you sisters had a fun and productive day yesterday. Dressing dolls, going to a tea part, working on a quilt block, grandson’s 6th birthday, etc. I walked with a neighbor, walked both dogs individually, mowed the yard, and before going to sleep, took advantage of an Etsy Labor Day sale and bought 6 doll wigs for my RRFF’s that come with removable wigs. The wigs were mostly 40% off, two were 30%. ZaZouCustomDolls, in case I can enable anyone else. Sale ends later today
Have a super day, ladies.
Again, happy wedding and anniversary, dear Jeanne.
Hugs,
Sally
Dear Sally, wow 6 wigs! Your dolls are going to have to do a hair fashion show (laugh).
Enjoy your weekend.
I think I lost my comment. Yes, looks like a beautiful day. Have a wonderful time at the wedding with your extended and extending fam. Best wishes to all. 🥰🎊🎉
Best wishes to all, especially a happy anniversary to Jeanne and George, felicitations to Rebecca, and congratulations to Karn. I hope you two will be as happy and accomplish as much as as our anniversary couple.
