Goodbye Brick Dust… Hello Agreeable Gray!

Those were the paint colors in my bedroom and I’ll tell you more about them in just a minute…

Let’s get our “dolly dress fix” for the day up first and then discuss those colors.

Some of us have been painting and some of us have been sewing… Charlotte is the winner today with her Ruby Red Fashion Friends all dressed in their Tutti-Fruity fabric dresses…This is what Charlotte emailed me…

“As promised, here are some pictures of my girls.

Maya is first, and the first picture is full length, so you can see the trim around her skirt. Then there is the close-up shot so you can see the bodice of her dress. I had micro check ribbon in just the right pink, and there was enough to make a bow with streamers. She is now bugging me about having “pretty” shoes like the other girls have, so I will have to do something about that, soon! She chose a clip with a butterfly and bow for her hair. (I have lots of little clips and things that I’ve collected to use in dolls’ hair over the years.)”

If you click on any of the pictures, they will enlarge.

“Next is a close-up picture of Bella, so you can see the detail on the bodice of her dress. She was happy with a more “tailored” look of the rickrack–although she did want those butterflies in her hair!”

“The next picture is a close-up of Hanna. Her dress is trimmed with very loopy trim, so she didn’t want anything else on it. She found some lavender flower clips for her hair. I think lavender is her favorite color, as it is mine!”

“The last picture is all three girls together. I used the same pattern for all the dresses, but somehow Hanna’s ended up a little shorter than the other two (it was the first one I made; I guess I should have checked the length of the other two against hers!”

“All the fabrics are from the Tutti-Frutti group, and from various years, some purchased at JoAnn’s and some at the late (and much missed) Hancock’s. All of them were used in various outfits that I made for our granddaughter, Lily, for her birthdays. She loved “grandma-made” dresses!! Now she’s 14 and taller than her mom–a little girl no longer!”

Thank you Charlotte! I know this will be a great start to someone’s day! Your bright dresses just might be what someone needed! ;o)

Okay, now onto my painted walls…

It was a busy weekend for us, and there isn’t much to show except painted walls, but I guess that’s okay…it’s what needed to be done!
After all the caulking my hubby did, dried, I started off by cutting in the new Agreeable Gray paint along the top edge of my walls, right next to the trim along the ceiling. I used a small paint brush so I could make it straight and not get it on my new white trim and the ceiling.

When that dried I went down past the trim and my hubby used a roller on the bottom sections.

After just a little while there wasn’t much Brick Dust left…

This was the last little bit of it to go bye bye!

The first coat looked like this…

Big difference, huh?

…and now this…

I have given the top section and down about 4 inches past the trim a second coat… My hubby will roll on the second coat at the bottom tomorrow. It is a really nice warm gray… in fact I’ve read Agreeable Gray is one of the top colors used in new houses today… because it’s so easy on the eyes and goes with just about any accent color. It’s call a Greige… a cross between a gray and a beige… It’s a gray but it has a soft warm look to it… I’m really liking it…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Charlotte Trayer, north of Seattle,

Thanks for posting my pictures today, Jeanne! While I was getting the girls ready, I found that light green smocked dress that I may have mentioned some time ago, so I will have to dress Bella in it and take another picture.

As I mentioned, the fabrics are Tutti-Frutti, and were all left from things for Lily. In fact, the lavender one was used in two different outfits for her! The first was a handkerchief-hem dress with pantaloons, and the daisies were just a small accent part of the dress. The other was a peasant-style dress I made for her, in which I combined 4 or 5 different “leftovers” into a tiered style. The fun thing about this line of fabrics is that they seem to mix and match with other prints over a period of several years!!

Wow, what a difference a coat of paint makes! Your bedroom looks SO much brighter and bigger now!! You are going to have Fun decorating it!! But first..the new floor!!

    1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Charlotte, the dresses are so sweet. I bet there are some Little Darlings standing in line waiting for their turns for new dresses (smile).

  2. Linda in St. Louis

Charlotte’s dolls look so cute in their new dresses! What lovely colors, and each doll looks so happy to be in their new clothes! You mentioned Hancock Fabrics, Charlotte, and yes, I miss that store too!

Well, you room looks about twice as big now, Jeanne! I can’t say it looks gray on my computer, actually that last picture looks completely beige, but I’ll take your word for it. The second coat will make a difference for sure! Actually, Rebecca’s room, which you showed the other day, looks beige on my computer too! I guess it’s the monitor!

What a hot day yesterday, and a wet one too! We actually had to miss church since the rain was comig down in buckets without a letup and with my bad knee, I didn’t want to chance it running from the car to the church. Unbrellas were useless! At least I didn’t have to water yesterday in the steam bath later on in the day. Good old St. Louis in July!!

  3. Thank you Charlotte for sharing your Tutti-Fruity summer dresses. The Ruby Red Fashion Friends are one of my new favorite dolls.

Jeanne, what a shocking difference your new bedroom paint color has made. The whole room looks brighter…three cheers for agreeable grey!

  4. Joy in northern CA

It looks pretty Agreeable at your place! So glad you were able to paint the ceiling tiles too because now the room just pops and looks so fresh. You are right about the color being popular. It seems like almost every staged house we check out has a similar color. So pretty and right in style with Better Homes and House Beautiful. And on to the floor! πŸ™‚ I think this project and the rest of the floors will add so much value to your home.
Charlotte’s girls look so cool and comfortable. The girls each wear the colors chosen so nicely. Good job girls! The RRFF kids around here are still in bed fortunately, as they would be so jealous and probably demand a new outfit too. πŸ™‚
Hope the second paint coat goes smoothly. Maybe you can fit in a break somewhere? Before on to the next stage of the project.

    Good morning!

Dear Charlotte, your girls look so happy and fine in their sweet dresses! And you said you used to make a lot of clothes for your granddaughter Lily. Lucky girl and lucky dolls. We are so glad you submitted your pictures and that Jeanne posted them. Thank you very much. Brava! Also, I love the cross-stitch pulled thread table cloth. I had some of those treasures and other 50’s table cloths back in NH. Again, your dolls look so cute and those fabrics are so cheery.

Dear Jeanne, what a difference and you both must be pleased as punch to see this much difference already. Sure is an encouragement and inspiration to get through it. I can’t wait to see how you end up filling this room. Your creative juices must be in overdrive!

Have a glorious day. Sunny in Salida and cool for the moment. We have had a lot of rain lately which we are VERY grateful for.

    Sally

  6. Debbie in Tennessee

Charlotte, Loving the girls in their summer frocks. Yes, coordinating, but not too matchy matchy. The bits of trim at the neck and hem are just the right finishing touch. Thanks for sharing.
Jeanne, That is the perfect backdrop for any decor! Such a calming color. I can imagine that you are happy to finally have an update in your room too!

  7. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, what a difference a color makes! The lighter color definitely brightens up the room.

I am back from the convention. I did take a few photos but they are not very good. No one would hire me to be a wedding photographer (laugh). There is one photograph that I took just for the Sofa Sisters and I will send it on to you.

Luckily there are tons of photos on the UFDC Facebook site. I don’t have FB but the general pubic without FB can still see some of the photos. Here is the link:
    https://www.facebook.com/pg/UnitedFederationOfDollClubsUfdc/posts/

There were seminars, workshops, and meal events. There was a doll competition, doll special exhibit (featuring Kaye Wiggs dolls), and of course, the sales room. The convention next year will be in St. Louis. The Madame Alexander Convention next year will be in Spokane, Washington.

This Saturday, our local doll club will be making its annual pilgrimage to the Doll Museum. This has certainly been a dolly Summer for me!

Thanks for saving my spot on the sofa.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Wow, St. Louis! Maybe Jeanne and I could go! Do you know where in .St. Louis it will be held, Dorothy?

  8. Karen from Kentucky

We have gray in our house, too. It is nice in that it hides dirt and also that it goes well with any color.

My favorite of Charlotte’s dolls is Maya. She is really pretty herself and her pink dress is gorgeous πŸ™‚

  9. Hi Charlotte,
Your dolls look so pretty in their new, bright dresses. I always though that “float” style looked so sweet on little girls.
    Hi Jeanne.
Your walls look very nice and you’ll be able to put basically anything you would like in there.
Your bedroom looks so much bigger also as lighter colors expand a room. I’m sure you can’t wait to get it finished and everything back in its proper place.

  10. Barbara in SE Texas

I’m so glad you mentioned that the color was a “greige” because on my computer it looks very light beige. Still beautiful though. Your room is coming along very nicely. We used to use the color “Navajo White” a lot. It was “the” color for everything for awhile. Years ago when we last painted our house we were into “colors”. Now I’d love to redo all the rooms in something more neutral. My husband is a great painter and used to do it for a living but I’m not seeing any love in his eyes for doing it again. Probably because the idea of moving all the furniture is not so appealing these days. Maybe after he gets his knees fixed.

Charlotte! I love, love, love the sweet little dresses on your RRFFs. I’m looking forward to adding Maya to our household. I just ordered her in the By The Sea version. How nice that you could use fabrics that once went into clothes for your granddaughter Lily. Helps the memories live on.

Dorothy in PA and the World it sounds like you’ve been having a wonderful “Dolly Summer” and there’s more to come. Glad you had a great time at the Conventions. Wish I were there.

Looking forward to seeing more pictures of the bedroom makeover.

  11. Marilyn from Colorado

To me, your walls look creamy ivory with caramel mixed in, so my computer is showing them as more yellow than they are, but beautifully clean and fresh. It’s very handy to have your own caulk king. Fortunately you appreciate him and take good care of him — and vice-versa. Your house just gets better and better, and you have Cindy for fresh ideas for the rare times you need extra inspiration or even an extra hand with a paint brush.

You’ll probably have the floor in a week from now. It should be beautiful with your new walls. Have you chosen drapes? It would be nice to have them up before you move back in, but I imagine sleeping in the sewing room is getting old fast.

Choosing new colors for bedroom furnishings should be fun. Hoffman Media (best known for Victoria magazine) https://www.hoffmanmediastore.com/product-category/brands/?product-brand=cottage-journal often has some pretty ideas, especially in Cottage Journal.

  12. Kathie in Omaha

The dresses are so summery Charlotte! I love the way the neck fits nice and snug and I really like the shorter length. πŸ˜‰ Some happy dolls there!
The agreeable gray is beige on my screen too Jeanne, but gray or beige it looks so nice! It
will feel so new and fresh.
Dorothy, Glad you had a good time at Convention. St Louis is drivable so maybe I’ll go next year! It is Dolly Heaven.

  13. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Kathie, you should definitely go next year! The conventions really are so much fun. They are educational also as that is a primary focus of UFDC events. And of course, there are dolls as far as the eye can see (laugh).
