Chandi is getting to know my new frig…

Sorry, if you were expecting a “sewing” post… it’s not happening today… maybe in just a few days… We HAVE to get this project finished ASAP…

I can’t believe all the horror stories so many of you had regarding your appliances… it seems like ALL appliances are on the naughty list and die too early… We are truly thankful we found this refrigerator and I’m glad we’re not adding our woes to so many of you about your appliances. It’s like an epidemic! Oh…and we DID buy the warranty package. My hubby usually says no on those things as he fixes so much of what we own, but Lowes had a special if you bought the 3 year plan, and made it 3 years without having to use the plan for something, you got 30% of the warranty plan price back…and if you bought the 5 year plan, and didn’t have to use the plan for anything, you got 50% of the price back on that plan! My hubby said that was a no brainer!

My day has been long but so worth it. We called Lowe’s to see if our new refrigerator could be delivered today but unfortunately they said they couldn’t bring it until Saturday. Rats! So my hubby said, “Get your clothes on, we’re going to get it ourselves!” And we did! My hubby has done LOTS, LOTS, LOTS of moving, but I was a little nervous… I should have trusted he knew what he was doing…he strapped that baby in the back of his truck, standing upright and we headed home.

Rebecca and my hubby and I got it down from his truck…he gave us lots of instructions about how it was going to work…we paid close attention…and things went exactly as he said they would…and when we got it on the back porch…guess who drove up? Kristoffer! Yay…

There was plenty he could help with. The refrigerator doors had to be taken off to get it through the doorway and the backdoor had to be taken off too. Kristoffer pulled it up the back step and into the kitchen! Whew…I could breathe now!!

Then they put the doors back on the frig and did some aligning… but we know with our crooked floors it will have to be leveled once we get it moved in place.

In the meantime, Chandi and my new frig are becoming acquainted… If you want to read my previous post about Chandi, you can see it HERE.

The frig isn’t totally stainless steel… just the front doors are. The sides are a kind of textured finish and I think I like it better that way.

I do think it’s going to be okay… I like the simplicity of it and am especially thrilled that the handles won’t be turning that yellowish color that all white or bisque colored refrigerators turn.

We were hoping Lowe’s could deliver it so we could stay home and work on getting that wall cut out so we could set our frig back in the hallway just a few inches…see it’s a few inches deeper than our old one, but moving it back into the hallway, will solve that. So we were a little behind and weren’t able to get the frig slid into place… We worked long and hard and got the outlet removed and it’s ready for more work tomorrow…

We are still living out of coolers but maybe tomorrow will be the day…nothing is ever easy with this house. We’ll get it eventually.

LOTS of tools and stuff are covering my countertops and dining room table… what happened to my pretty kitchen??? :o(

I did have to make a run to Walmart for more ice, and picked up a pair of girls lacy tights…that’s what I use for making my thigh highs! So see, I was thinking about sewing… I just never found any time…

I actually made a sheet pan dinner tonight with veggies and shrimp… but it was kind of late when we ate… 9:00! It is now past midnight and I need to get to bed too…

See you tomorrow… for more adventures from Jeanne and George!
Blessings to you all,
Jeanne

After reading everyone’s comments from yesterday, two things spring to mind: 1–I’m glad I don’t have an ice maker! Our kitchen isn’t plumbed for one, and I’m the only one who uses ice, generally, so sticking a couple/three ice trays in the freezer is no biggy. I’ve never had an ice maker in any of the homes/apts. I’ve lived in except for the last parsonage where we lived before I moved out on my own, and I wasn’t too fond of that one! I suppose we didn’t use it often enough for the water to run really fresh; as a result, the ice smelled and tasted funny!

And 2–I’m thankful for mostly old appliances that are reliable! And a hubby who could fix them. He has kept our dryer running since he first bought it in 1968, and yes, it IS 53 years old and still works! (He is getting so frail now, though, that I’m afraid it just might have to be replaced next time…)

How fortunate you are, Jeanne, that you had the option of going for the refrigerator yourselves! Lots of folks don’t have that option, and have to wait it out. I think there are enough gray tones in your flooring that the stainless steel will work out okay for you, even though s.s. wasn’t your first choice.

I, too, prefer white–after having lived for 45+ years with all brown appliances and dark wood cabinets, I am enjoying that bright spot in my kitchen that is my white fridge! So it doesn’t match anything else, so what?! No one else usually sees it except us anyway.

By the way, I found the PERFECT mint green ribbon in ye stash, and the new sash is now sewn onto Bella’s dress. Will try to get some pictures tomorrow and Wed.

Congratulations on getting the new fridge home! I’ll bet they’ll remember you at Lowe’s. Kristoffer sure showed up at the right time.

I have to tell a couple of stories of very good appliances, though, to balance some of the horror stories: A brown Kenmore fridge probably like Charlotte’s lasted decades and even started right up even after being in storage for three years while we were overseas in the 60s; dryer and washer lasted three decades. The current GE refrigerator with ice maker, Amanda dishwasher, Jenn-Air glass top stove and Hotpoint microwave are all at least 12 years old and have never have had a service call. Can you hear me knocking on wood? I’ve never bought the warranties but I sure would if offered the one you got. You certainly are quite a team. Congratulations on the whole adventure! And even dinner cooked! Can’t wait to see the completely finished kitchen!

So glad you got your fridge in even if you had to do it yourselves. All 4 of you are a team and that certainly makes sense why you decided not to wait for Lowe’s to deliver it.
I imagine today, you and George were up early working on getting the area ready for the fridge’s new home! Yay!!!
Can’t wait to see it in place.
Our family are big fans of “ The Brave Little Toaster.” I can only imagine the smile on Fridge’s face when he gets settled. At least Chandi approves! Happy House!!

Oh yes, I see that delightful refrigerator dolly. Brings back memories of hauling the new refrigerator we bought for the cabin from the truck (don’t ask me how we slid it off) down the steep dirt path, across the deck, and in through the front door only to find that it wouldn’t fit into the narrow opening into the kitchen. Ha ha! After dismantling half of the tiny kitchen and removing the refrigerator doors, we were able to squeak it into the carefully measured space. What a hassle, but it was necessary to replace the 1937, previous model with broken unreplaceable door hinges.
So glad Kristoffer was able to add some extra strength to the power team and get the beast into the kitchen. She’s a shining silver spark which will only add more beauty to the snazzy kitchen design.
Had another design change on the sew along project. We now have shorts and a crop top. No longer the romper I’d envisioned. Pieces and parts everywhere. Oh my. Doesn’t look like I’ll make the deadline on this one either. Well, maybe.

Joy, you mentioned yesterday you were looking for a new printer. I don’t know what your requirements are but I recently (December) bought an EPSON Eco Tank printer ET-3710. David had bought one and liked it but he doesn’t print much. I print a lot of patterns (I’ve had too many bad experiences with storage devices so I want hard copies) and in color so the idea of having a huge ink supply that doesn’t cost my life savings to refill appealed to me. Is it perfect, well I wish it had an auto feed and if you fill the paper tray to the top it will jam, but I’ll trade those little inconveniences for the fact that I’ve had the printer six months, printed out a ton of colored patterns and still have half the original ink supply left even the black. If you’re looking for a photo printer, well I haven’t tried it for that so I don’t know how it will do.

Thank you so much Barbara. I’ve thought of the Epson. Might be good for a change. 🙂

What a remarkable journey the kitchen redo has been. But I’m curious, what room is behind the other door in the hallway? Would be nice if you had another door to use as the access panel. Matching “charm” in an old house. I think the color of Reggie the refrigerator will be perfect. I had gotten a black fridge situated the same way, just inside the doorway that could be seen from the front door. It actually blended in sort of like a shadow. I think you’ll come to really like the gray sides. As Charlotte says there is enough gray in the flooring and countertops to look very put together. Stainless front compliments the faucet, small appliances etc. Another question, do you stay up nights to plan all this to entertain the sofa sisters, Lol. Wonderful how you all get together and just get it done. Dinner looked delicious, almost as tempting as cake.

Sounds like you ended up with plenty of help to move your new fridge into its new location. Getting appliances situated can often be a trial but it looks like you have things under control. Living where we live and having to buy in Houston/Katy we always (that is David and the boys) pick up our purchases ourselves. We don’t qualify for free delivery living 35 miles or more from the stores. Having the option to go pick things up even if you are local is great because I often feel that once you buy something they don’t give a fig when you actually get it. I once bought a futon for Sean when he moved into an apartment in Pasadena, TX, where he was going to college. He lived around the corner from the store where I bought it and it took them a week to deliver it. He didn’t have the option of getting it himself because David was out of town with his pick-up.

While I was writing the above my fingers were actually tingling. Not because of your new fridge, although I am excited for you, but because of some news I saw this morning. I got my new issue of “Dolls” magazine. It has the most wonderful article about Dianna Effner and the people who paint the Little Darling dolls and I saw where Bailey is available for pre-order as a Twinkle – really want Bailey but not sure as a Twinkle. But that’s not the reason for the tingling. The reason is THE HEARTSTRING DOLLS ARE COMING BACK!!!! Little Charming Dolls negotiated a license to bring the Heartstring design back. As most know the Heartstring Dolls were a sculpt Dianna created for Jo Flitton for her Jo’s Doll Shoppe. Jo has health problems and decided to no longer sell the dolls in 2019. Jo had put on her website awhile back that she may have found a buyer for her business but then the notice disappeared so I thought it had fallen through.

Jo created a wonderful community around her dolls when she was feeling well. The Heartstring dolls and their wonderful Jo-created clothing went many places and did many things and we all shared pictures. Once Jo could not do all that she had before, the community just evaporated. I would love to see it come back. So many who participated had such fun with the dolls and, until I found your blog, I felt like my connection with the dolly world had hit a brick wall. I had not yet started collecting my Little Darlings. It was actually through Jo that I learned of Dianna Effner. I have heard several on the blog say they were sorry they missed out on the Heartstring dolls. Soon they will have the chance of owning one or more.

The dolls will be sold in just “underwear and a t-shirt, and there will also be several complete looks in outfits by various designers, including Jo Flitton” (quote from “Dolls”). Paraphrased: there will be a series of dolls with companion toys and collaborations with various organizations, mainly charitable. In the plans are new make-up designs from various professionals, including students of Dianna Effner. I put all those details in for those who don’t get “Dolls”. I am totally over the moon and as soon as I’m finished here I will go to littlecharmingdoll.com and tell them how excited I am. I’ve got room on my shelves for many more of these.

Oh, Barbara, that IS exciting news! Thanks for sharing the details. Guess I’d better hustle over to B&N and see if they have that issue of Dolls available.

Dear Jeanne, this is good news indeed. I think you will have a wonderful Summer in your new kitchen.

I love the shrimp and veggie meal, said the vegetarian non-cook. I think I could make that.

  8. Linda from St. Louis

Jeanne, the saga of your kitchen gets more and more exciting! I cannot imagine anyone moving my refrigerator from the truck to the kitchen. Do you not have steps to go up, like we do? We have 3 steps from the garage to the kitchen, and just one from the front door, but no matter which, they are steps! Not easy with a big refrigerator! But now it is in, and hopefully in place by now. It is pouring down rain here, and I wonder if it is the same in
Carbondale. For sure, no roofing can be done today, at least not here!

Your dinner looks so good, but 9:00? I think we are ready to turn in by that time here! I imagine it smelled just heavenly!

Can’t wait to see the new fridge in it’s rightful place, full of food! I bet you can’t either!

  9. Hi everyone
I have a few minutes while my hubby is moving the outlet for the frig to the corner of the hallway.
The pictures you see behind the wall we cut out is a hallway just on the back side of my cabinets and frig wall. It’s a short hallway where one door goes up to the attic and the small door you see in the picture goes to the basement.
The wall to the left of where the frig will go was crooked…(no surprises there!) So while it was fine at the top, the bottom area was too close together for the frig to fit back in to.

SO…we are having to move the upper wall cabinets and the lower base cabinets over to the right about an inch or so…it will work fine. But it’s just another set back… I have repaired the floor where the new frig will go back to and as soon as my hubby get done with the new outlet he’s putting in, we plan on getting the frig pushed in place and the cabinets put back in place…
It’s ALWAYS fun trying to figure out this house!! NOT!!!
    Gotta go…
    Blessings, Jeanne
