My Saturday was long and busy but I somehow managed in between things to get some outside pictures taken and her dress set listed on Ebay… It was a little windy and a bit bright outside, but I moved around in my yard looking for the best spots… that’s why there are so many different locations…
Here are the outside pictures and then you can check out the auction… either by clicking the picture of her at the right side bar or you can click HERE.
If you click on my pictures, they will enlarge.
I think her standing in front of our Burning Bush would have been better if the sun had gone behind the clouds for just a little bit…
We set up a stool with a box on top of that and then a piece of wood on top of that to get our Bradford Pear trees in the background… I think they look pretty…
One picture in the gazebo…
One on the bricks…
…and then we moved inside to set up our Thanksgiving Kiddie (and Kitty) table… Bailey and Navi were good (red headed) sports!
Thought I might show you Navi’s 30 second “Troll pattern” dress like I made when I was 6 or 7…
…straight pinned in the back…
…for a quick dress in a pinch…
…and how about those Bradford Pear trees of ours…
I hope you enjoyed these pictures…
See you Monday!
Blessings, Jeanne
Your pictures are wonderful, Jeanne–actually I think my favorites are those in front of the Burning Bush–the dark read is a nice contrast to the dress.
Speaking of which…you have a bid already!! At 1:30 a.m. (Pacific time) on 11/9!! Might a bidding war be in the offing?! I’ll tell you, if I had a Maryellen, I would be sorely tempted, because this dress is just Gorgeous on her!!
I love your setting with the “kiddie table”, and Navi’s little “troll dress”! Nothing wrong with something quick like that to help make a good scene!!
Your pear trees are lovely, by the way. Out here in the Seattle area, the only way we get this kind of “color” (except for up in the mountains, and I don’t “do” mountains) is to plant trees that are genetically “programmed” (I guess you’d call it) to turn bright colors in the fall. Normally most trees just go “brown” or maybe slightly “gold” before they fall. I do miss those wonderful and varied colors of fall in Michigan, even after having lived out here since 1960! Once a Michigander, always a Michigander! (and actually, not just a Michigander, but a Yooper–the best kind! LOL A Yooper is someone who lives in or is from the U. P./Upper Peninsula.)
I had a dear friend who was from Michigan. She ended up here in Texas via California. We worked together and when she retired she moved back to the Detroit area where her two sisters still lived. One summer hubby and I and the kids (she was like a surrogate grandmother to them) went up there to see her. She had a cousin in northern Michigan and she was there when we visited. I loved their place. It was on a lake. In the summer they went boating and fishing and in the winter they went snowmobiling. It was absolutely beautiful. They had pictures taken in their sun room at Christmas looking out over the lake. Could have been a Christmas card complete with snow scene. The weather in July was to die for and it was actually chilly when we took the boat ride to Mackinac Island. We went through the Soo Locks on July 4th and then the boat docked and we had dinner while we waited for the fireworks. It was a dream trip, especially since Texas was in the midst of a drought and there were no fireworks here that year. I also worked with a woman who was a Yooper. Her husband was going to the University of Houston. She showed us a picture of her in front of the sign for “End of Earth”. Probably close.
So nice to read that you’ve had some of the UP experiences! I’ve been to Mackinac Island at least 2 or 3 times, I think, and it’s lovely, for sure. No motorized anything except emergency vehicles. Horses and buggies, bicycles, walking…that’s how you get around! Haven’t been to the Soo Locks since I was a kid, though (and I’m 74 now). I love it in the UP!
Two of my cousins have homes on small lakes up there; one lives there year around (and their dad–the two are brothers–just moved back from AZ at the age of 90 to live with him) and the other one and his wife have a cottage on another lake. (One is Gooseneck Lake, but I don’t remember which one is there.) My best friend’s youngest sister has a summer cottage on a small lake also. I’ve been there, and it’s lovely!
When I was growing up, my aunt and uncle (the parents of the above mentioned cousins) had a cabin on Lake Michigan, near Rapid River. Later they built a beautiful home there. Oh……sigh…..
Jeanne, I love the backyard pictures! Those Bradford Pears are just beautiful, but they will be gone in a blip! Our neighbors have a beautiful one in the backyard, and it turned a beautiful red overnight, but two days later there are just a few leaves left. Enjoy it when you can, which is a good saying around here!
Our backyard is now almost leaf free, but the front, well, where is the grass, street, sidewalks and driveway? Hopefully we can start on that and a good wind will come along and blow them away!
Maryellen looks just so cute with her little friends! Yes, Navi’s outfit is something I would also do at age 6 or 7! I believe you made somehting like that for your Barbie when you were young! You have showed that on the blog some time ago, and I had a good laugh about it, but it was so cute to see how an expert seamstress started out!
Good luck with the auction! Now it looks like you have a whole nee era to sew for!
Such beautiful pictures! We’ve been using the leaves on the ground for bedding for the chickens at night. There have been coyotes a few miles away, so I hope they don’t become a threat. The dress turned out very nice! Good luck on the auction!
Your photos are gorgeous, Jeanne. Mary Ellen’s dress turned out beautifully. That darker brown ribbon really made everything look top notch (as well as all of the other well-paired details)!
Autumn is certainly Mary Ellen’s season ! Beautiful dress..I especially like the tabs at the waist..nice detail !…photos are exceptional !
I see you are onto the Twinkles…aren’t they FUN?!
Such wonderful outdoor photos in tree paradise. The colors in your yard are amazing. Love the sweet tea party with Bailey and Navi at the “kitty” table. Mary Ellen looks like an expert babysitter in her lovely fall dress. Keep those bids coming people. 🙂
How are George’s birds doing? Haven’t seen them in some time.
We had frost last night so had to cover the jade plant. Unusual for us so early, but then the seasons have all been off lately.
I remember that fabric from Bailey’s “Funshine and Roses”. I picked that outfit as my favorite once when we were choosing. I love what you’ve done with the fabric for Mary Ellen. She looks so sweet. What beautiful pear trees you have. We’re like Charlotte here. We’d have to plant trees that are programmed for color. We have a lot of Live Oaks here that even though they have “oak” in their name, they are evergreens so no changing leaves. Your Burning Bush is gorgeous.
I remember making dresses for my dolls like the one on Navi. Too cute. What a sweet tea party. Love the table and chairs.
Late spring has returned here with no end in sight at the moment. Still 80 degrees when I go walking at 5 p.m. A week or so ago it was in the 60s.
Barbara, I put this post on Jeanne’s last blog but you might not have seen it so repeated it here.
An American was living here and teaching seismology at the university as well as doing a study on them. He got more of a hands on study than he expected (or wanted). He lived on Avonside Drive, just across the river from where I used to live. That area was very badly hit and the land so badly damaged that it wasn’t possible to rebuild on it so the Govt ‘Red Zoned’ it and purchased the land from us (the house was covered by insurance but not the land). It is now all parkland, his house and mine gone forever.
In your studies did you come across anything by Professor Jane Soons? She was a professor of Geology at Canterbury University until she retired. She was very well thought of in the International Community and used to chair many big International Conferences. She is my Dad’s cousin.
It was so long ago I was studying geology I probably forgot more than I remember, but it was a lot of fun. I don’t remember the name Prof. Jane Soons. Sounds like I sure would have encountered her in some way had I continued down that road.
Your fall color pictures are gorgeous, Jeanne. We had a return of warm fall temps and sunshine last week here in northern Minnesota but the leaves are long gone.
Charlotte, our son went to MTU. We LOVE the UP!
Julia, my cousin Bob (who has the summer cottage) also went to MTU!! Small world. (He’s now maybe 65 or so, so it was a long time ago!) I am thinking one of his sons went there, also, but I could be wrong about that.
I also LOVE the UP!! MY car has three bumper stickers: “Yooper”, “Yooper girl” and [with a silhouette of the UP] “if you haven’t been there, you wouldn’t understand.” I’ve been tooted at (“my wife’s family are all yoopers!!”) and even had a note left on my windshield (“Yooper girls rule! Grand Marais!!”). So much fun!
Love the UP also, Charlotte. We vacationed a number of summers in the mid-1970’s to very early 1980’s in St. Ignace and then over to Mackinac. I’ve also been to Manisitique. We usually stayed in St. Ignace at the K Royale and ate at The Galley, but one year we stayed at The Windermere on the island and we always got May’s fudge. Yum! Luckily, there are seagulls out by our lake/reservoir in Ohio. Blink once or twice and it’s almost the same
Maryellen’s dress is just lovely, everything is perfect! I love kitty sleeping under the table hoping for a bit of turkey. Your burning bush and pear are gorgeous. Our burning bush is almost down and the pear leaves are fast falling. Yes, enjoy it while you can.
Laura, I moved from the UP in 1960, but have been back many times. Been to St. Ignace as well as Manistique. My dad is from Ishpeming, and my mom partly grew up in Escanaba (and partly in Chicago). I grew up in Stephenson, about 43 miles from Escanaba.
Charlotte, we have the same issue in Christchurch, our trees tend to go brown then lose their leaves, however there is a small town further south called Arrowtown (just outside Queenstown) that is famous for it’s Autumn (fall) leaves and it frequently appears on calendars. A little snippet about NZ, all NZ native trees are evergreen (all the ones that shed their leaves are exotics) and most of the native flowers are white. Not all though, the Pohutakawa has bright red flowers and blooms at Christmas so is called the NZ Christmas tree and often appears on Christmas cards here. It doesn’t grow in the South Island, except in very sheltered places, but down here we have one very similar called Rata which is more shrub than tree. Jeanne, I sent a photo of a Christmas card with a Pohutakawa on it. This is one of the cards I bought for last Christmas and didn’t get to send lol!
How interesting, Anne! I don’t know if I’ll ever get to New Zealand at my age (74), but it’s nice to think about! That Pohutakawa tree sounds lovely! Thanks for sharing. I would never have known, otherwise.
I learn so much from this blog, from Jeanne, of course, but also from the interaction between the rest of us!!
Jeanne, your photos are lovely and you have a fabulous garden. I love your pear trees. I love the outfit it is so pretty. Since you have a bid on it already it is obviously going to sell this time.
Sam had to go to the hospital dentist yesterday to have some teeth out. The next chemo that she has from Feb has a peculiar side effect, it stops the gums (only the gums) healing so she has to have any work done now to give the gums time. She knew she needed work but going to the dentist is out of reach for low income people here (our PM has some changes in mind for this parliamentary term) so she was quite happy to get it done for free. She will need a plate and will have to pay something toward that but might get help with that too. She plans to come for coffee this morning but not sure if she will be able to eat anything. She had 4 teeth at the bottom front out and I think she said two wisdom teeth. it was 6 teeth anyway.
Oh, poor Sam! I will pray for quick healing for her….bad enough to have one tooth out, but SIX!!
Your trees are so beautiful. 3 days ago I commented at a friend that the tree across the street was holding on to its leaves beautifully. Yesterday they were all gone, like the ones in Linda’s post. Today it was dark here from about 2:30 on — the snow was so thick and coming down so fast that you’d think this was its only chance all winter.
That means the lovely warm color of Maryellen’s dress and the colors in your photos are especially welcome. I can hardly wait to see the first Christmas dress of the season and which lucky doll will wear it.
Your pictures turned out lovely. The trees and bushes and the tea party were all fun to see.
Mary Ellen will be sad to see her dress go but some other Mary Ellen will be ecstatic !
It was a so-so fall here for color….the burning bushes finally turned. The ash tress were their usual gold and our blueberry bushes were a pretty peach color but some did just turn brown and fall off. One more mow to grind up all the leaves and cover the roses.
Have a good week!
