A few more things I learned about American Girl Kirsten #4

If you missed yesterday’s post, you might read it first to see what all the fuss about this Kirsten doll is all about. You can see it HERE.

I discovered a few more things about Kirsten doll #4 and thought I would share them.

I washed her hair last night and let it air dry. It wasn’t in bad shape, but it is kind of dry on the bottom few inches.

I was hoping it would dry silky smooth but that didn’t happen. When it is braided, it looks pretty nice.

It does have the short little hairs in the back…

As I was working on her hair, there seemed to be a few specks of something glimmering in her right eye.
I looked closer at it and “think” she may have the beginnings of Silver Eye. Sometimes you can see it and sometimes you don’t notice it at all. I’ll show these pictures and see what you think.

I know she’s an early edition doll because of the ribbon under her wig.

She has had her string ties stitched to her body…

I also found a spot on her left arm… just a pin dot spot.

I’m not sure what her eyebrows can tell us…

She does not have a body tag, but I know there is a tag in her shoulder seam and I could take her ties loose, remove her head and look. Her neck ties look a little thin up by the knot and I don’t want them to fray just so I can see what year she was made…but I might… :o)

Both Kirsten’s are having fun hanging out together…

I went to the Goodwill after Rebecca bought the dolls and found a bag of doll clothes…it was taped shut, so I didn’t know exactly what was in them. I did see a Kirsten boot and saw a few American Girl doll hangers so I took a chance.. My plan is to sell the clothes in lots if possible.

Well, I better get this girl in bed…it was a busy day…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Your #4 Kirsten looks so much happier now that her hair is fixed up and pretty!

Not sure about the silver eye–I think some of the photos had some reflection, and that may have thrown me off.

I’m glad you showed the ribbon under the wig–that’s something I hadn’t heard about (at least I don’t remember that I did) until someone mentioned it last night.

I’d never seen the ties stitched down like that before; I wonder if she came that way, or some loving mom did that for her to make Kirsten easier for her young owner to dress.

I think an Oxy-10 treatment would help to lighten that little dot on her arm–worth a try, anyway.

I had some x-rays done today, and tomorrow will have a CAT scan; my doctor wants to get to the bottom of whatever it is that’s causing me all this pain. And today my husband had a small cancer removed from his elbow. Just squamous cell, so nothing serious, but the elbow can be tricky as it “bends”!! So the doctor used regular stitches, and bandaged and wrapped it. I had to rewrap it after supper, and then adjust it again a while ago. I told him to wear a long-sleeved shirt to protect it, incase the incision is exposed again! He hast to have the bandage on for two days, and then we can remove it.

I hope you and George are both feeling much much better!

    1. Hi Charlotte, I hope the x-rays and CAT scan help you find answers. Praying that you’ll feel better soon. Glad nothing serious for your husband.
I was the one who mentioned the ribbon wigs. The white body and early tan body Kirsten, Molly, and Samantha dolls have that thin shiny ribbon under their wigs The first release 1991 Felicity, like I have, have a ruffle like fabric at the base of their neck. It’s just little tricks to pinpoint the age of the dolls.

  2. Jeanne, I love how Kirsten looks in braids! She just isn’t “Kirsten” without them, so I would just leave them braided. No. problems with that!

I have known about the ribbon along the wig line, but the stitching of the ties is new to me! I have belonged to AGPT for quite awhile, but never has that been mentioned at all. Maybe Laura would know. As Charlotte mentioned, maybe some mother did that so her daughter could dress Kirsten easier. I know that would be a good idea, since those ties do get in the way and are had to keep in place while dressing dolls.

The silver eye, well, I have no experience with that, since my dolls were purchased new, except for my Josefina. Her problem was bubble eye, which I never discovered until I had her almost 6 months! It’s not noticeable unless you really look for it, and it is not getting worse, so I am doing nothing about it. I do notice that your #4 Kirsten’s eyes are a lighter shade of blue than #3.

I would like to know, when somebody says to use Oxy-10 or whatever, what exactly are you talking about? I have Oxy Stain remover, but I sometimes hear people talking about a face cream. Which is it?

Both Kirsten”s have very nice necklines. Some dolls look like they have a blouse on with all the gathers!

I’m so happy that you are once again back in the sewing room doing what you do best, and it makes you happy! That’s a win-win! Hoping George is coming along well…….and you too!

    1. Linda, it’s 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Acne cream for removing stains. I’ve never had to use it myself because all my dolls were purchased NRFB new and I don’t have any clothing that has been known to stain. One culprit is the AG version of Felicity’s Riding Habit, but I have the PC wool one with no worries.

  3. So, what is the cause of silver eye? I’ve heard of it. Never checked my AG’s for it. Didn’t AG replace doll heads for free at one time? Maybe the eyes can be changed keeping the original head? or I personally would probably just leave them. Very interesting though.
A whole bag of clothes? What a find. Will you show us the goodies? I’m sure you would be able to sell just one shoe if there isn’t a mate. Lots look for replacements.
One more 90’s day before the cool down. So tiring keeping those seeds damp in hot weather.
Looks like my newbie dolly should arrive by Saturday. šŸ™‚

    1. Hi Joy,
Silver- eye only affects the Pleasant Company white body and early tan body pinwheel- eyed dolls, namely Kirsten and Molly. The decal eye dolls, Samantha nad Felicity, are completely safe. The problem occurs when the paint on the back of the eye flakes off exposing the silver lining. My daughter’s Kirsten developed it in one eye and was sent to the doll hospital, but unfortunately, it occurred again years later. She chose to leave her that way rather than sacrifice the lighter, and IMO prettier blue and the soft, matching eyelashes.
If you have a Mattel Kirsten or Molly she is safe from developing silver-eye.

      1. Thank you Laura! I have a Kirsten, but have no idea of her age. Have to take a look tomorrow. Love your knowledge. šŸ™‚

  4. Kirsten cleaned up very nicely. Being one of the older PC dolls she won’t have the ultra silky, shiny hair. Kirsten’s hair is more straw–like for lack of a better description., even more so on the WB ones. My Samantha nad Felicity have a shine to their hair, but not same as the Mattel dolls . My Felicity’s is shinier because I’ve only brushed it once, whereas Samantha has been restyled a few times. The Kanekalon wigs are slightly different on the German- made dolls. Yep, that’s the ribbon under her wig I was talking about and I can faintly see the metallic paint of her eyebrows.
Obviously, her ties were stitched down so they were out of the way for her young owner to dress. Still love #4, such a sweet PC face. You’ll also notice those early German dolls are just a tad shorter.

Susette, congratulations on finding your own sweet Kirsten. Share photos sometime of her, please.

    1. Yes, Jeanne, please show what you found as doll clothes. I can’t get passed your finding dolls and clothes at Goodwill. When I joined AGPT and someone mentioned that I went every week for a year and never saw a thing all the while scouting out things on eBay. Ebay became the faster, earlier means to an end. As Joy mentioned, people do search for a one -piece replacement, even a shoe. I actually deliberately purchased one piece of certain sets from other adult collectors who were breaking up sets.
As more time passes, I do see that the items for the long archived dolls go up in price. Someone on AGPT commented on the low eBay prices for historical items, but I didn’t see it. I went and randomly typed in sets I own and they were more than double when I paid for them and not even NRFB as I chose to collect.

  5. To my untrained eye they look like reflections…so now Iā€™m curious about silver eye.
Both of them are certainly pretty dolls though and the hair is your speciality so Iā€™m sure it will be just fine. I always like it when you wind the braids around the ears.
Rebecca sure does find some treasurers šŸ˜€šŸ¤—
Hope you get some answers from your Dr visit Charlotte.

  6. Hi Jeanne,
I’m so happy to hear you’re on the mend. I hope George is feeling better with each passing day. What a neat find your daughter brought home for you. I’ve never found anything worth mentioning at our local GW. I once spied a collectable purse and was looking it over when I found the most ugly spider, it had made itself comfie, I’m so glad I didn’t just buy it without checking it out first!
Thanks for all the information on Kristen, I don’t have one but it’s fun to learn about the earlier dolls.
    hugs
    Ingrid
