The greatest news would have been that my flooring came in! We called….it hadn’t! Rats!!!
But… in other great news…Larry the Lizard Left the Living Room! Rebecca spotted him over by the front door under the buffet. My hubby called out to me to open the front door and open the storm door out wide and lock it. I did it as quickly as I could. When Larry started slithering back toward the door, he apparently felt the warm sunshine and decided he’d rather be outside. He scampered over the threshold and dropped onto the bricks below. Hallelujah!! I just didn’t like him being in my house.
He was actually a Skink and here’s a “google” picture of what he looked like.
Goodbye Larry!!!
The next time Rebecca went out the front door, she called out, “Now there’s a turtle out here on the sidewalk…”My hubby said, “He’s probably looking for Larry!!”
It was mid morning before anyone saw Simon….my hubby spotted him climbing up the side of the tree. I went out to the tree and called, “Simon, Simon…I’m here!” A few seconds later I saw his cute little ears moving in that big hole where we first saw him.
Then he disappeared and a few seconds later I saw him looking out of another hole up a little higher in the tree…do you see him?
That’s not just “any” tree…it’s one of the largest Sassafras trees on record. In fact we were told it was the 3rd largest one…that was until it got struck by lightning several years back. The base of the trunk is 21 feet around.
It’s in a tree registery and here is what it looked like in its prime when we bought our house 16 years ago…
Limbs began falling off and here is a picture of it in winter looking pretty gnarly!
In other great news…I glued my picture frame back together and the spackle filled in the cracks well enough to suit me. I super glued the back on so I think it will be okay…and no one but all of you will ever know about the cracks!
And last up…I did a little sewing today, and you’ll be relieved to know I still remembered how!! My hubby asked if I could fix his crutches…the rubber on the hand grips had gotten brittle and was pretty shriveled up.
It was a pretty simple fix…I used the same upholstery fabric I had made my brother a microphone case from and added a little warm and natural batting for a bit of cushioning. I just made them detachable with velcro…much better.
Well, that’s what happened at my house Thursday! Hope your day was just as exciting!
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Only Jeanne would name the critters that take up residence (at least temporarily) in (or near) her residence!! LOL First was Simon the raccoon, and now Larry the Lizard. Well, I’m glad Larry is outof there now, and you won’t have to worry about him any more! And it could be the other baby raccoons are hiding here and there in that tree (or some other nearby), and maybe you’re not always seeing Simon each time you see one!
I’m so glad the picture frame mended okay! It looks just fine to me!! Hopefully it will stay put this time!
Well, those are some classy handles on George’s crutches. Really jazzes them up!! Well done!
Last night I finished the embroidery I was working on–still need to hem the runner, and then I will take pictures.
I am still hurting quite a bit from my fall on Mother’s Day–now it’s mostly my lower back/left hip, but uncomfortable enough that I can’t stand too long at one time. I’ve finished glue-basting one row of loopy trim on the dress I made for Bella (Ruby Red Fashion Friends) today, but that’s as much as I could do. It is SO frustrating, not to be able to do normal things without so much pain! I think another doctor’s appt. is in my future. I really want to get back in there and SEW, but so much of it involves standing at the ironing board for a while first (such as glue-basting that trim). I can’t really sit at my ironing board–knowing me, I would end up just standing up anyway! LOL
Charlotte, I have Bella also. Haven’t sewn for her yet. I’ve been busy learning Blackwork embroidery. So fun but really do need to get sewing again. I did make myself 2 masks for when I go out as must of doctors around here are asking all to wear masks.
Jeanne your sassifrass tree is a walk down memory lane for me as we had them in the woods back behind my parents house. Yours was amazing
That lizard thing would have freaked me out! Not a fan of creepy crawly things.
Now Simon is another story. I’d be tempted to turn him into a pet.
What a marvelous tree to have in your own backyard! Darling pictures of the raccoons. We had a resident gecko🦎 in the single-wall construction houses in Hawaii decades ago. They dine on mosquitoes so were not exactly pets but not unwelcome.
What a professional job on the crutches. You could easily go into business selling those. No kidding! Hope the flooring comes in but you also might need a day of rest before the surgery on Tuesday. You are amazing fixer uppers.
Boy, lots going on at your place. A blue tailed skink running around. I thought it was just an ordinary lizard. Glad he made it back to the great outdoors. And you have turtles too? Great call George.
So nice that you left the dead tree standing as it is such a great place for nature. Do you have birds nesting there too? Oh, maybe the raccoons would get to the nest.
I think my dad fixed the handles on crutches for my grandmother but used pipe insulation. Yours look much more professional. Good job.
Drive safe heading north and let us know how the covid testing turns out. Around here, they stuff a long swab up the nose to the back of the throat. Maybe yours won’t be so invasive.
I worked on resizing a couple of patterns yesterday. We’ll see if they are even close to fitting as 19″ Ardyn needs something new to wear. I know you’ve made doll shoes, but have you ever made sandals? Aya and the Mae’s need some. Might be a fun tutorial. 🙂
Drive safe.
Regarding turtles, a neighborhood website post stated that turtles naturally roam within a one-mile radius of where they were born. When someone takes them and moves them, they will roam around aimlessly and end up dying because of the disorientation. I’d look this up on the internet and see if it’s true. So maybe leave the turtle to his own devices.
First to comment back to you, Jeanne, on things you wrote to me. I’m glad to hear you like “The Great British Bake Off” You do see a lot of amazing technique and creativity. I usually try to see an episode each day during all this inside time while I”m working on something else.
The reason people didn’t usually smile in the old tin types and daguerreotypes is because you had to stand still and hold a pose for quite a bit of time and you might get tired of smiling. That said, the one big portrait I mentioned yesterday with my great grandparents and their children has my Tante Frida with her new husband in it. Everyone else is just looking pleasant and she is smiling from ear to ear. I love it because she was obviously so happy.
Simon looks so sweet peeking out of the tree. It did look lovely in its prime. How neat it is registered. I remeber being so sad when the Charter Oak fell and died.\
What a clever idea for fixing George’s crutches. I’m not a fan of “have-to” sewing jobs but you seem to enjoy doing any kind of sewing that needs doing. What a wonderful tree you once had. So sad that it was hit by lightening and severely damaged.
When I was reading Joy’s comment about leaving the tree to nature it reminded me of the time we tried to do that in our town. We had an old log that was making a wonderful home for some bunnies. When I mowed I was always careful to make sure one of them didn’t get frightened and run out in front of the mower. The city took issue with the old log and made us remove it. When we bought our property we had so many wonderful trees. After several years of drought we lost many of them. We had to call in a tree removal company to take what remained down because if the remains of the dead trees would fall on any of our buildings during a storm, insurance would not pay for the damage. And, one of them had branches that hung out over the road so I was afraid that one day a branch would fall on a passing car and we would be sued. We bought the property for the number of beautiful trees and it’s not the same without them.
I made the cutest little dress for my Boneka Charlotte. She hasn’t had much mommy time since she came to live here so I’m trying to make up for it. I haven’t done much sewing lately and am trying to get back to it. With the grandkids needing to do schoolwork when they came here for a couple months I felt that should be my focus. Now when they come it’s more relaxing. They entertain themselves and I’m getting back to sewing. As more things open up, we will be able to take advantage of that. The waterpark is open but I’m leaving that up to their parents. When I tried that last summer I realized I wasn’t as young as I used to be. I had great fun doing that with my kids. Believe me, it wasn’t the same with the grandkids. I couldn’t keep up with their energy alone and being in the heat all day was a no-go. I got smart and started paying for their parents to take them.
Charlotte, I’m keeping you in my prayers. I am so sorry you are hurting so much. My knee is getting a little better every day but still stiffens up if I keep it in one position too long. It feels much better when I keep it moving but it’s hard to walk around and sew too. lol
I’ve missed commenting a couple days, one day because I thought I had. Guess I got interrupted. People were mentioning about family pictures. I have a cousin in PA that I just got familiar with and she actually had some of the pictures I have but she knew who the people were. My guess wasn’t even close. She also knew some of the family gossip that didn’t travel far enough for me to know. She grew up in the area of Bloomsburg, PA, where the family was from so she spent her life among people who were “in the know”. It is fun keeping in touch with her.
Hope you flooring comes in tomorrow so you can finish your room. I’m looking forward to seeing the finished project and also seeing the new creations you will make in your new, beautiful sewing studio.
