…and they all lived together in a little crooked house…Day 3 of our renovations

You remember that song, “There was a crooked man who had a crooked house?” Well, he had nothing on us. We aren’t necessarily the slowest fixer upper couple in the neighborhood, but we certainly seemed like it today. Some projects are just more tedious than others…like window sills that tip back and top measurements that are 1/2″ different than the bottom ones and 3″ thick 125 year old oak boards that break drill bits. It can make you wonder, “Why did I decide to do this?”

It takes a LOT of tools to put the trim around windows…

It also takes a lot of shims…

…and a lot of caulk…

And don’t forget about patience…it probably takes more of this than anything…unless you want to count laughs. We had plenty of laughing episodes today…we really are like “The Three Stooges” when we do projects that involve trim.

Somehow with everything that was off and uneven and unlevel, we managed (with all those shims and caulk) to pull off 2 really pretty windows…IN THE SAME DAY!! And we did it before the sun went down!!

The sun was streaming through the windows making my pictures look different in every shot. The walls haven’t been painted yet. They’re still green…

Okay, so after that big introduction..let me show you my windows…this was before we got the inside trim on the North window…

…doesn’t it look nice with the insides finished off?

…and after…with trim…

The windows still have to have a trim board at the bottom for the sill and they still have to have the nails set with a punch, filled with spackle, sanded and then painted… but I still love looking at them.

So, I think a trip to Lowe’s is in order first thing tomorrow to get the sill boards and new tracks for Rebecca’s sliding closet doors.

My hubby told Rebecca she might have to take an extra week off from work if we don’t kick it into high gear!! We have worked 3 days and have 4 days left…(that’s just when she has to go back to work…)

Hope you’ll join us again tomorrow to see what’s next!

Blessings, Jeanne (and crew!)

Those windows look amazing!!! So worth all the hard work you all have been doing on them. Can’t wait to see what’s next!!

    1. Thanks Charlotte,
We can’t wait to see the finished room, either. Blessings, Jeanne

  2. How nice, clean and professional the windows look, Jeanne! Just beautiful! I have a husband who does things like that, put in all our new windows, redid our bathrooms, kitchen cabinets, new interior doors, flooring and I don’t know what else! I know what a mess it is and how many tools you have to have! it will all be worth it in the end, though, and by the time you both get up in your years(!), it will all be done! ( You hope!)

The last picture shows a yellow room. Is that her new color, or is it just the way the sun is hitting? Boy, did we ever have sun yesterday! Up to 90 degrees!

    1. Hi Linda,
Handy hubbies are good to have around…mine also does electrical and rewired our whole house.
I think…oops…I know…oops…I feel…like we are already up in years. My body was rebelling getting out of bed today.

No, Rebecca’s room isn’t yellow…it was just the lighting in the room when took that picture.
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. They are beautiful!! So happy for you and that you have wonderful patience. Can’t wait to see the end product.

    1. Thsnks Gloria,
Slowly, but surely, we ate getting there…on our way home from Lowe’s…again for more “supplies.”
      Love you, Jeanne

  4. All I can say is, what lovely views! The light coming in the windows is wonderful. If I were doing the window treatments, I would definitely have any coverings/blinds off of the windows as much as possible. Then the beautiful trim would shine. Such a nice job. Love the detail too. Hoping the trim remains white. I love white on window trim.
For some reason, I was thinking of the ceiling and connecting trim of the room yesterday. I wonder how it would look if you painted the ceiling and down the wall to and including the high trim the same color, white? Then the wall below a color of choice. So, the white ceiling would continue down to and including the trim. Would unify everything I think. I also pictured the walls and trim below in white and the part above the trim in the palest sky blue. Dreaming of clear skies I guess.
Everything is looking so nice. I commend you all on the tedious work of trying to make everything fit. Our front kitchen window has trim that is actually an inch off to match up with the redwood siding. However, the way we installed it, because of the cuts you never notice. And the back of our house dips down considerably by the fireplace. If we uncovered the hardwood floors, you would see where they are pulled apart at the ends through the middle of the room. Cover up those flaws and get on with the show. 🙂

    1. Hi Joy,
YES, the trim is staying white…my favorite look!!
Rebecca and I were actually debating about what you mentioned…painting down to the trim piece, but didn’t do it yet…that might be a Cindy question…
We have almost become magicians in this house…so many things are slightly crooked…but we just work with what we have…and somehow, almost miraculously, it works out and looks pretty.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. You are making great progress! Living in an old house I know all about rehab projects. They always take longer than you thought. There are always issues you didn’t know about. That’s where the extra time comes in! Is a wall color already picked out? It’s fun to watch as everything changes!

    1. Thank you Julia,
We are hoping to make some progress on some big things today…I’m anxious to see some color on the walls…Rebecca is too.
I think we realized from the very first project this house was going to eat up our time..and it has.
      Oh well…
      Thanks Julia,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. I thought today’s post would be titled, “Tuckered out Thursday”. LOL The windows look fantastic and the trim (lintel) looks lovely. I absolutely love decorative stone lintels on old houses. There’s a lovely house that has them placed vertically and fanned out that I drive past when I go to the next town. I’m sure Rebecca is pleased to see the changes.

    1. Hi Laura,
That WOULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT TITLE!!!
It just about sums up how we feel…tomorrows title might be Are we Finished yet Friday? I sure wish we were!!!
I think Rebecca is getting e cited to move back in. She loves how clean and crisp it looks!! Me too, since it will be our guest room when she moves out!
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. The windows are beautiful! What a great job. I love following your post, such a great variety. I do not comment often. Hubby and I do a lot of our home repair and renovation projects. I really can appreciate all the time and effort as well as the frustrations and rewards these projects can give. Thanks for sharing your journey with us.

    1. Hi Laurie,
I’m glad you are enjoying my latest posts… I might not be sewing, but I’m still using some of the skills I use…measuring, pattern making, templates, etc…and precision…

We are hoping to get the walks painted tomorrow…then it will seem like we are making some real progress…
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

Dear Jeanne, I am having so much fun watching your progress. You are certainly working magic on Rebecca’s room. You will be able to hire yourself out after this – Jeanne’s Traveling Renovation Service, Old Houses A Specialty. chuckle

    1. Hi Dorothy,
Surely you must be jesting… :o) my cabinets are next!! I ought to be a pro at painting after this week… I’m going to take a small break, do a few doll things and then do them…
I’m really feeling this project…maybe it’s the up and down the ladder…
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Those windows are breathtaking! What a difference it has made…you would think you were looking at windows in a new house. The white trim is just lovely. It may be taking awhile but it all is going to be perfect. You are all such hard workers!
Love seeing out your windows to the green leaves and blooming trees. I may go pick some branches off my Red Bud and put them in water for Easter.

    1. Hi Kathie,
My neighbor came over in my yard when we were on the porch cutting trim boards and said to help myself to her lilac bushes…I’m going to take her up on that tomorrow.
Thanks for your compliments on the windows. They really do change the looks of the room.

I also received the Ten Ping pieces…thanks…I’ll see what I can come up with…
      Thank you,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Wow, looking great. Rebecca’s room is going to look awesome. I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

    Judi

    1. Thanks Judi….
I cant wait to see what happens either!
I’m glad you are enjoying this portion of my life.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. Trimming out windows is hard enough when everything in the house is plumb. Much harder when it’s not but so satisfying when it’s finished. Looking forward to the next segment of “Rebecca’s Room”. Better than watching HGTV and at least it’s not a rerun.

    1. Thank you Barbara…
I’m so glad everyone is enjoying seeing us in action. I think tomorrow will make a big difference…windows and walls…finally painted!!
      Thanks,
      Blessings, Jeanne
