Help me decide which lighting is best for Navi…

My first dress of the year, the 1950’s dress Eden was modeling, unfortunately didn’t sell on Ebay last night, so I made it a Buy It Now and added Free shipping. You can see it by clicking the picture at the right side bar or you can click HERE.

Please don’t be upset with me, but Navi’s Tea Party didn’t happen again today either. My hubby and I had too many things to attend to and before I knew it, it was 5:30 and that’s not nearly enough time for me to figure out pictures, take them and get anything listed. So sorry! It was pretty gloomy today too, and I wonder if my pictures would have even turned out.

However, I was fooling around in my sewing room tonight (trying to figure out some way to get my lighting better) and I snapped these few pictures of Navi on a shelf. It’s the shelf where all my dollies live, so you’ll see them in the background. The shelf is closer to the lighting on my ceiling and I thought maybe being up that high might make a difference. When Navi is on this shelf, I am almost eye level with her and my camera can see all the details in her face instead of shadows when I have to bend down to take pictures. Ignore my dolls in the background and just look at the lighting and see if you think Navi looks like she has good coloring…

#1 was taken with a flash. It shows up lots of details but it also makes her hair shiny and I’m not a big fan of that. Sometimes it washes things out too.

This next picture was taken with just my camera and no extra lighting on her… just the ceiling lights…you can see a few shadows on her forehead and under her chin area. Still not a bad picture.

The next picture was taken with one of my Ott lights shining a few feet away from her…It makes everything a little bit brighter on her face color…at least to me. Can you tell the difference? I might just be super picky…

#4 was a close up with my camera and the Ott Light.

I am going to get out the light tent tomorrow too, and see how that goes…We’re supposed to get a wintery mix of snow and sleet tonight, so I’m not planning on going anywhere. It sounds like the perfect day to figure this all out.

How about I show you something Joy sent me. We were talking about the Renwal doll furniture about 2 weeks ago and she happened to find these ads being auctioned off on Ebay. Just take a look at those prices!!! Speak up if you have any of this furniture. I’m sure everyone would love to see your pictures too! I’ll post the Ebay link here too…

Renwal Doll Furniture

Okay, it’s time I got some sleep…

See you tomorrow… and hopefully I’ll have this all figured out.
Blessings, Jeanne

First of all, somehow I didn’t see your yesterday’s post before I went to bed; maybe it was later than usual getting to my inbox, I don’t know. So, I will comment on that, too, tonight.

I love Navi’s little petticoat; it’s so cute!! Well, SHE is cute!! Maybe I need one?! Hmmm…well, after all, today Was my birthday!! Do I really Need another dolly?! Probably not….

That little tea set is as cute as can be! I’m so glad you took it out of the packaging, as it was really hard to tell beforehand. The table and little chairs are just perfect, and I love the little teddies that Navi is having as her tea party guests! I’m glad they are practicing their tea-party manners–they will be ready, whenever it takes place!!

As to the lighting, I do think the ones with the Ott light came out the best. Fewer shadows, and the hair looks more natural. I think you have a winner there, Jeanne! (and no, you’re not being too picky!)

Loving those ads for dollhouse furniture! And, oh, yes, I did have some of those things! In the bottom picture, I had the bedroom set (although I don’t remember a lamp with mine) and the dining room set, too, I think. Also the fridge and stove, and the baby bathinette, and at least the main parts of the bathroom set. What a wonderful trip down memory lane! I did so LOVE my doll house! My “people” weren’t as detailed as the ones in the first picture, though–as I recall, they were all molded of pink plastic, and they were all permanently seated. I would have loved the more realistic dolls! Thanks for sharing, Joy!

    1. Happy Birthday, Charlotte!! I hope you had a great one. I got interrupted earlier and had to post what I had written or lose it.

    2. Hope you had a very happy Birthday, Charlotte!! I missed you yesterday. : ) Glad you are back today and all is well. Have some cake for me. : ) Love and Hugs, Ali

    3. Definitely need a Navi or one of the other Twinkles. They are all so cute. Hope you had a wonderful birthday. šŸ™‚

  2. Jeanne, dear, upset?? How can anyone be upset with you is a mystery to me! Having a blog to write everyday, almost, can not be easy in my opinion! You are a perfectionist, and I can hardly be the one to advise you on photography, just check the ones I send to you! I just snap what I see and that’s it! You will figure it out and maybe someone else with better photography knowledge can help you. Susette??

Well happy birthday, a day late, Charlotte! I hope yo had a good day!

Oh, goodness, the Renewal furniture, I have it all, except for the small folding table, (where to put it?), the slide and see-saw. I remember when I got my sets of furniture, when small, they did have those paintings on the furniture and kitchen sets, and I did not like that, but for my dollhouse that I have now, and showed several weeks ago, I steered away from that.

It is lightly snowing here, so another day to stay in and change some dolls!

  3. You should try getting a ring light. They have them on Amazon. It’s a ring of light on a tripod, much like an Ottlight, with an opening in the center of the ring for your camera. I have it on my wish list, and it might help you out. Look into them. šŸ˜€

  4. Sorry the little dress didnā€™t sell. I wonder how many people have dolls that small compared to America Girl dolls?
Do the AG ensembles sell the best?

The light box is designed to take care of the problem of shadows on the faces, especially when the hairdo on the doll has bangs. Iā€™m no expert, but using the lights that come with the set also allows for light to be bounced off the sides of the box so itā€™s indirect. Good luck with it. I have a smaller one that I should get out and see how it works with Ten Ping.

I received the wonderful Dragon Puppet that Lee and Pearl showed on their Facebook page. There is also a string that controls the dragonā€™s mouth. Looking forward to setting up next yearā€™s pictures.

    1. Sorry, I am mistaken. It was Mollyā€™s dress, not Naviā€™s. Hard to believe as itā€™s so pretty and detailed.

  5. Always a fun place to start the day!
I like the ones with the Ott light best…. lots of light for details but not glaring.
Loved going down memory lane with the doll house furniture! I had/have 90% of the pieces. It was fun to set up (and re-set the ones I knocked down) but then I didnā€™t know what to do and would wander away. Woolworthā€™s was definitely the ā€œgo toā€ place! Thanks, Jeanne, for supporting this Rabbit Trail!

  6. The ones using the Ott light are the best of the group.
Oh my, the trip down memory lane and the doll house furniture. Many great hours of play time.

Linda G….yes, Woolworth’s was the place to go. It was my first job after graduating high school. I love it but you could easily spend your paycheck before you got out the door. lol. I miss those times and the quaint 5 $ 10’s.

Happy Belated Birthday, Charlotte. Hope you had a fantastic day and plenty of cake.

  7. Good morning!
I’m sure you already know this, but had to critique.
#1 is overly bright on lighting, and the tea set is out of focus. Must be because with the flash the focus was on Navi only, and she has no shadows.
#2 shadows on Navi and a bit dark, but the tea set is now in focus.
#3 the color seems a bit dull/dark, but everything is in focus and there is less shadow on Navi’s face.
#4, your closeup has both Navi and the tea set in focus and there are no shadows and the color/lighting are good. I wonder if more Ott lights would make a difference on full length photos? Can’t wait to see photos with the light box. Also that ring light Christine mentioned sounds interesting except I rarely use a tripod.
I must have missed seeing the Dragon Puppet from L&P now residing at Susette’s. Would love to see a photo of it.
I love that ad which says, “Keep your Moppets out of Mischief!” šŸ™‚ I did not have the painted Renwal furniture. I think it must have come out after mine. And I believe I must have gotten maybe one piece at a time of the cute extras as I never had the full boxed set. Probably picked up on trips to Woolworth’s with my mother. Ironic, but the dolls, which I did have, “both stand and sit”, must have been the early BJD of today which I love. Fun.
Hope your weather isn’t too bad and if you go out, please be careful. No more slip and slide for you.

    1. Use Search to find ā€œChinese Dragon Puppet.ā€ Iā€™ll use it next year with my dolls. It arrived very quickly and is a winner. I got the one with the red fur. Have fun.

  8. Sorry Eden’s dress didn’t sell. It’s early in the year and people are still coming off of paying Christmas gifts.
I think the Ott light produces wonderful photos. I do think having a doll up on a shelf improves things in general.
Those Renwal furniture ads are fun to see. I do think even then those prices weren’t as inexpensive as you might think. My mom recalls $5.00 buying the weeks worth of groceries. The only person my mom had for her dollhouse, besides a baby, was a lady dressed in red. She stands and sits. All the furniture has no extra painting like the antimacassar etc. My grandparents gave a dear friend the money to go downtown and purchase the pieces. The open stock concept is great, reminds me of Playmobil. My daughter had many sets of those, but I would call replacement parts and get little extras. Woolworth’s was the place to go for lots of things. I fondly remember going to the one at our mall as a teen. It’s where you got candy, Goody hair accessories, and other trinkets. My daughter even got to go a few times in the early 1990’s before they were gone. BTW, I’m still waiting on the dollhouse pictures I took with the borrowed camera.
As I mentioned once before, we lost one of our three antique stores last Christmas when the landlord jacked up the rent threefold and the owner couldn’t do it,even trying to distribute it among the sellers. It was the best as far as variety and affordable items, even some fun doll sized things. Well, I hadn’t been on the street where the other ones are in a few months, just always seemed to drive another way. It appeared that another one is gone which leaves get the one that carries the oldest era items and is the most expensive. I’ll have to check Saturday when I will be down that way. Just sad when things that have be here for a couple of decades are suddenly gone.

  9. I agree that the pics with the ott light are the best ones. The height of the shelf is good too.
She is so tiny and sweet.
We are in Florida for a couple weeks. It is so nice to walk outside and see GREEN…and flowers. Iā€™m amazed that there arenā€™t more flowers blooming because it is so warm. One day we will see the garden in Naples. Canā€™t wait to see the orchids!
The Renwal ad with the reference to keeping the Moppets busy is a hoot!

  10. First of all a big Happy Birthday to Charlotte. Hope you had a great one!

I was wondering what tea party it is that you attend in your underwear. Seems there is no clothing in sight. Then I realized the tea party was not the subject of the post. Just kidding. Had to make a comment about that, but there sure is some pretty underwear to see. I’m a terrible picture critic, so I’ll let others advise you on that. As for your needing to apologize, since we don’t have blog sites ourselves, you can bet that we’ve figured out it would take a lot of our time, so we definitely will not be critical of your life taking precedence over blog. We’ll just hang out on your sofa until you have time to sit down and chat. Don’t mind us.

I think I pretty much missed out on the dollhouse craze when I was young even though my sister and I had one. I was mostly into paper dolls because I loved designing clothes for them. I do remember the dollhouse furniture because we had most of what I see, except the sewing machine and I don’t remember having the washer or ironing board. We did have the people that could stand and sit and I remember we had a folding stroller. The prices in the pictures are amazing. Having the furniture open stock meant that moms could buy a little treat for their daughters when out shopping without damaging the budget. I have always missed the five and dimes. There was one here in Sealy when we first moved here but it closed a couple years later. Cleaned up on patterns during their close-out as I remember.

About the $5.00 for a week’s worth of groceries, I remember back in 1968 I could buy a month’s worth of groceries (excluding meat) for me and my then husband for $50.00, and another $20.00 at the meat market. That’s $70 total for the month. He had a good job with DuPont and after our other expenses ($200/mo. for a large townhouse apartment, all bills paid – that’s the way it was in Texas back then, and a car note that was less than $100 for a new car), we had a decent amount left for vacations, etc.. My how times have changed.

I can’t believe Eden’s dress wasn’t snatched up immediately. Maybe it is too close to Christmas as Laura said. The Christmas bills would be coming in about now. But if it’s for Valentine’s Day it’s the right time. Hopefully someone will figure that out. Gracie would love to have it, but she has so many dresses she doesn’t have occasion to wear them all (the result of my inventory that never sold).

Looking forward to the upcoming Tea Party. Can’t wait to see who attends and what they’ll be wearing. lol
