Sock Tutorial for American Girl dolls…

PLEASE NOTE:
My dress set for the 10″ Boneka/Effner dolls ends this evening on Ebay. If you’d like to take a peek, you can click on the picture at the right side bar or you can click HERE.

My eyes seem to be working well together. There are a few minor things I’m going to discuss with my doctor on Wednesday, but all in all, I’m pretty sure my brain is figuring out the distance eye and the close up eye and making things work. It’s a new prescription so I’m adjusting to it. I’m still having a little trouble telling colors… I’m thinking I might have to get Rebecca’s opinion when I put something together at least for a little while…just to make sure I’m choosing the right colors. It’s kind of like looking at a picture you have taken and it looks perfect and then you tweak it just a bit and overexpose it to make it a little bit lighter… I’m seeing the lighter side of things. Guess I didn’t know things were as cloudy as they were.

Okay, enough on that… let’s move on to the Sock Tutorial… This is very simple and once you see JUST HOW SIMPLE, you’ll think, is that all there is to it???

I numbered my pictures this time to make it easier to know I’ve gotten them in the right order…

It helps to start with a very stretchy sock… These are ladies and came from Walmart and stretch in both directions…

They have 12 scallops, so you’ll want 6 scallops for each sock… If you get a pair of socks that don’t have scallops, just divide them in half…

Turn the sock inside out and pin them together on the “sixth” scallop…then pull them up where you want them to be, and pin the underside of the foot area.

When you slide it off your dolls foot, it should look something like this… your pin in the back should be in the halfway position of the sock width.

Cut off a little below the pin at the sole of the foot area.

If you have a machine that can be adjusted, set it to a stretch stitch… Your stitch length can be about 1.5 or 2.

Take a piece of paper larger than your sock and lay it on there. I’ve taken a piece of green floss to show you how we will be stitching… Just eyeball (or you can make a paper pattern if you feel more comfortable.) The stretchy socks are VERY forgiving and you’ll really be okay just doing free motion stitching.

It should look something like this…

Now, still keeping the paper underneath your socks, stitch the mirror image of the second sock going in the opposite direction… like this…

Tear the paper off your socks and set your machine to a tiny zigzag…set your stitch length to about 1 or 1.5.

These socks were “JUST” wide enough to get both from one sock… but the stitching to do it is VERY close together. You’re going to want to stitch that tiny zigzag along the edges of the stretch stitch you just did. Starting at the top of the sock, stitch your zigzag on the inside of the stretch stitch but as you get to the curve of the heel, switch and zigzag on the outside of the stretch stitch…

Next you’re going to cut them apart very carefully. If you don’t trust yourself, you CAN stitch them farther apart when you get to the “straight” section of the sock. My socks were barely wide enough for the AG legs, so I stitched mine almost on top of one another… Just to make sure I didn’t cut into my stitches, I put a pin at the heel area and stitch up to the scallops using that stretch stitch again and reinforce with the tiny zigzag again.

Almost done… trim your thread and they’ll look kind of gnarly…

But you’ll smile when you see them on your dolly feet…

VIOLA!!! You did it! Socks for your doll!

See I told you it was easy!

See you tomorrow, or “maybe” tonight! *wink* *wink*
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Charlotte Trayer

    Wonderful! Thanks, Jeanne!!

One question: what size socks did you start with? Obviously, teeny-tiny little girls’ socks won’t be as big around as those for someone who wears adult sizes. So I wondered….

Glad to hear your eyes are starting to figure out how to “work” for you! The color thing will sort itself out after a bit, too, I’m sure. In the meantime, you are wise to have someone doublecheck for you, just in case!

  2. I was wondering the same thing Charlotte was, are they children’s socks or adults? I would think you would get the biggest size you can find, but oh well, I am not really making socks for my dolls, as I have quite enough, but it would be good to know if I was!

I’m so happy that your eyes are now almost working together! I know what you mean by one eye for distance and the other for close up, because my eyes are like that too! When I get new glasses, which I don’t wear most of the time (!), I have to take the time to adjust what I am seeing!

Are you ready for cold and snow???

  3. Ooo, that sock tutorial is great. Thank you, Jeanne. I bet if I found some knee highs I could make thigh highs, too. I’ve seen tutorials for making a pair of tights with knee highs. I will examine the sock selection at our Dollar store the next time I get there.
I’m glad to hear everything is progressing nicely with your eyes post surgery. 👍😊

  4. Oh, you make it look so simple. 🙂 Thanks for the great tutorial. I haven’t made any in a very long time, so this is a great refresher. When I’ve made mine in the past, instead of curving to a point at the side, I do more of a straight line. Then when turned, the thick seam is on the inner ankle not the back of the heel. I think I’ll join Julia at the dollar store and see what is available as we have no socks here that will fit Ruby Red Galleria Forever Friends girls. Can you tell I’m excited for her arrival tomorrow?
So happy your eyes are getting in sink. Onward to Turkey Day. 🙂

    1. I’m excited with you for Hanna’s arrival. I’ve watched the video over and over. I love the way Hanna models. She is too cute. I’m ordering Bella (Arabella) first. Maybe the others after. The price is certainly right and the dolls are absolutely adorable. And I’m ordering the pom pom outfit. I usually make clothes but do buy things that I probably won’t make and that outfit is too cute to pass up. I’ll place the order Wednesday but she probably won’t arrive till next month. Another Christmas present from me to me.

  5. Thanks for the sock tutorial. I wouldn’t have known where to begin. Do you have patterns for the thigh highs you make or do you have a method for determining length and width? The ones I’ve done had a pattern, but that was only for one size doll. I need to make a pair for Lolla Rose’s Christmas outfit but I don’t have a pattern. I’m definitely weak at pattern drafting.

Glad to hear the problems with your eyes are clearing up. Hopefully your check-up on Wednesday will be a good one. Never thought about the color situation.

  6. Thanks for the Sock Tutorial. Love the way the scallops look and they are really cute with those red shoes!
Thank goodness your eyes are coming right along. That seems just so amazing. Now you won’t have to use glasses at all?
The troops came in mass yesterday and we put Halloween and Thanksgiving away and pulled out Christmas. It’s early but was a good day for helpers and my DIL does Thanksgiving, bless her heart! Off to make some birthday gifts.

  7. That’s a nice tutorial—very detailed. I may have to give it a try as soon as I can find some socks that will work. I really like the scalloped edge, so that is what I will be looking for.
I’m so happy that your eyes are working well. Eye surgery is so scary. I’ll be praying that they will soon be as good as new.
