Today you’ll see a Civil War “table” and a crinoline…and a pointer!

I never made it to your comments, except to read them, but you all were SO kind in what you said. I was busy most of the day and then I had a meeting Wednesday evening, so there was no extra time. You’ll see below what I was working on…

I asked my hubby if he could make a school desk for Eden from any old wood he might have. (he’s been kept up to snuff since the beginning of this dress set!) He wasn’t exactly sure what I had in mind, so he asked me to come and take a look at a few things in the garage. He had things lined up and needed to know which one I liked the best. The wood you’ll see was my favorite…it was old looking and I had saved the pieces we used for legs from some project we had done before…glad I did! When I saw those old leg pieces, I thought maybe a table might be easier than making a desk… and it would probably be more versatile. I only wish I had made it about 1″ taller, but I can probably have him cut another piece of wood and glue it to the bottom of the legs.

I also made Eden a pointer… who knows what ocean she’s pointing to?

I also made 3 crinolines… Yes..THREE! The first one was too skimpy so I discarded it! The second one was WAY too full and hiked the dress up! It looked a little goofy…

…see? I told you Goofy!!!

So I took that one and removed some of the boning around the bottom edge and tried a third time! (AND YOU ALL THINK I KNOW WHAT I’M DOING??? :o) After I got the third one right it was a bit too short, so I let the hem out on the dress to make it closer to the floor…

I forgot to take a picture of JUST the ruffled crinoline, but you can see it here. It has a drawstring that ties in the back. For Ebay, I’ll get some better pictures.

The rest of my day was trying to figure out how to make her school room look like a school room! I was looking for wood pieces and ways to hang my map up and flooring, and rugs and other props to use… Finally I decided on this…

This is what it looked like from a distance… I had to build up that middle section of my cutting table about 3 inches to make it level with the sides of that area. I’ve got all kinds of containers building it up… then there were all the lights and cords and trying not to knock anything over.

Anyway, these probably won’t be my Ebay pictures, as they are so varied in their color of the dress and the other things… I WISH I could take this all outside so it would be perfect coloring no matter if I took a picture up close or far away…

Enjoy the rest of my pictures…

Who’s ready for that Spelling test?

Well, that’s how I spent my day! How about you?

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Everything is so cute, Jeanne! I see one of the students brought Miss Eden some flowers, as well as that apple.

Where did you find that chalkboard? I don’t recall if you’ve said. It’s really a nice addition to the entire school setting.

I think the table is an okay height, but, yes, a little taller might be better. Of course, if it were to be her desk, it would have to be big enough for her to sit at, but since it’s a table, you can just pretend her desk is in the other corner of the room, and the table can be used for students turning in papers, various displays and projects, etc.

    1. Hi Charlotte,
Yes, every teacher needs an apple on her desk…makes her look more scholarly?

One of my subscribers sent that chalkboard to me a few years ago. Isn’t it cute?

I like it as a rustic table… maybe I’ll keep my eyes peels for something else that could work for a desk…
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. So charming, Jeanne. I always admire the stories, the beginning of stories that accompany your ensembles/settings when you add something to ebay. You work hard at making each and every auction a wonderful event making it so much fun to peruse and savor. Thank you again for making this a special day with your posting.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you Becky,
I’m so glad everything finally came together and you like it! That’s what matters most. I almost got so caught up in the props and the set up, that I forgot the whole thing was about a “dress” for sale!!
Thank you again for your kind words.
      Blessings, Jeanne

Dear Jeanne, I love how you have put everything together. I love the little kitty asleep under the table. Thanks for the behind the scenes photos. I always like to see how folks set up their photos as it gives me ideas.
I hope the spelling test isn’t too difficult (laugh).

    1. Hi Dorothy,
I have everything taken down and most of it put back where it belongs. I found that little kitty n with my accessories and thought, “why not?”
      You’re a writer…I think you’ll pass the Spelling test… :o)
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Thanks for the tip about the globe; I found one at Hobby Lobby. Just the right size. The petticoat is perfect now. What a lovely scene. The table is really cute as well as the kitty. All your work (fun) is well rewarded.

Have you tried using the portable lights that come with the light box to eliminate the shadows on the doll’s faces? Can they be set up in front on each side of the scene?

    1. Hi Susette,
This week globes, and black hats and Simplicity patterns have been disappearing from stores everywhere!!
I tried the lights from the light tent…I’ll show you what they made things look like if I didnt delete those pictures… they didn’t make things any better.
I’ll get it figured out one of these days.

I’m glad you enjoyed the post today.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I love the little table. Good job George! Even it’s height is fine for photos and can then be used with shorter dolls too. All of the accessories are perfect. Did you sharpen a skewer for the pointer? Would love to know about the chalk board too.
On another note, I returned to Michael’s yesterday as other person needed to go to Bed, Bath, and Beyond. Lo and behold, they had one little globe left. The globe holder part looks a lot like yours but is plastic. I am going to paint the holder black as it is white. Didn’t see any pink ones at all. 🙂 The globe pops off quite easily, so painting should be a snap. It has a hole on the bottom where there is a pencil sharpener. Can’t see it at all though unless you look intently. The one here is about 5 1/2″ so should work for most of the dollies. Thanks for the great idea.
Perhaps, you can take an outdoor shot of Eden pointing at a flower for a botany lesson? Then you wouldn’t have to move anything outside.
I love the finished outfit. The new slip, even with additional work involved, is lovely and makes the skirt stand out perfectly.
Thank you so much for sharing the fun details of dress making and the great props.

    1. Oh I like this display! The chalkboard is something I would add to my collection if I could find one. I’m guessing you had a lot of fun putting this scene together.

      1. Hi Carolyn,
I probably had a little TOO much fun putting this set together! I’m half seamstress and half crafter!! I’ll try to put the information about the chalkboard on tomorrow’s post.
        Blessings, Jeanne

    2. Hi Joy,
I’ll tell George you liked his carpentry skills on the table! I think it was fine.
Yes, the pointer was a kabob stick cut off to about 9 inches…and then lightly stained.

The chalkboard came from one of my readers.
I’ll try to post a picture of the back of it…I think I remember seeing a sticker on the back that might give some information about where to find them.
Another globe disappears from a store shelf… :o) Hope you have fun using yours.

I did take s few pictures outside and have a few of them in the Ebay listing… ut they weren’t great.. :o(
The listing is scheduled to go on in about 20 minutes…
I’m glad you enjoyed everything, Joy.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. That first picture made me smile. It’s just so vintage but bright, clean and inviting for any little student. This is back to school week here so g-kids and teachers in in the family are all excited.
Today I’m fixing a Deanna Durban doll that is grimy and has splits in her Compo but has good eyes, lashes, and a wonderful real hair wig. She will be so pretty all cleaned up!
Have fun listing that special teacher.

    1. Thank you Kathie,
School starts here next week…its getting busy in town with lots of new students driving the wrong way!!
Please take some pictures of the before and after on your doll repair. We’d love to see more what you do and I’d like to get you some more business!!!
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne
