Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for all your kind compliments on Mae’s dress set! It felt nice to finally have it finished and listed on Ebay. You can see it by clicking the picture at the right side bar or you can click HERE.
I was so happy to see the color of Mae’s dress on Ebay looked just like it did in person! YAY! No color tweaking and no special filters!
Dorothy L asked if the hat for Mae fit on any other dolls. I was hoping it would fit the American Girl dolls, but alas… it didn’t… too snug! :o( It looks like it kind of fits, but it just falls off if you try to move the doll. I tried on a few different girls, but nope!
As I read my title again I wondered if anyone thought I had gotten a real owl…
Well, rest assured… I did not! I found this owl at our Thrift Shop before Christmas and even though he’s about 10″ of adorableness and I loved seeing him on display on the buffet…
…but he’s been hiding a secret…
He has a hole where his tail feathers had chipped away. I’m not sure what he’s made of, but I think it’s some kind of plastic… although he looks like wood. He’s very lightweight and was perfect except for that hole on his backside. WELL… not to be done in, I bought him for $3.00 I think… and brought him home knowing I could fix his “problem!” But it’s taken me till a few days ago to do so. I still had him out on my buffet. I think I kind of like him!
I used some stiff organza fabric I had and cut it in a few squares and glued them to the inside first and then the outside of his tail.
Then I used some of that 3″ wide, white fake fur you buy by the yard. Actually, this was one of my purchases at Joann’s the other day. As I wandered around the store, my mind was thinking of things I needed and could use and I saw this fur and Mr. Owl came to my mind. I was going to get 1/8th of a yard… but you had to buy 1 yard of anything that needed cutting. Oh well… now I have extra and can fix any other owls I find that are broken! :o) Anyway, I snipped off a few smaller pieces (just cutting the backing but not the fur) and starting at the bottom, glued it on a little at a time… then I worked my way up his tail just enough to cover the hole…
…and that’s how Mr. Owl grew back his tail feathers!
Something else I can add to my resume… Fake Owl Restoration! :o)
See you all Monday!
Have a wonderful weekend!
Blessings, Jeanne
Well, I see Mae’s dress already has a bid on ebay! That was pretty fast! You’d better start preparing her for the news that she won’t be able to keep this outfit, either!
That was a very clever restoration of Mr. Owl, Jeanne. And who knows, that white fake fur might end up in a cape for one of the 18″ dolls, perhaps to go over a ball gown? I am thinking maybe the lining of the cape could be the fake fur, with the outer layer something like velveteen. Or the fake fur for the cape, lined with satin to match the ball gown? Of course, it could also trim the collar of a coat, or be a muff; little girls love muffs! (I know–I was a little girl with a dark blue velvet muff, once upon a time, and I loved it!
Had a great day at expo, with two wonderful classes. I still need to take pictures of my purchases tonight, which I’ll do before I go to bed; don’t know that I’ll post them on FB tonight, though, as it’s already almost 1, and I need to get to bed!
The owl is sweet. It is those eyes! they look so lovable and attentive. Some owls look kind of huge and scary but there are some really adorable ones, I do not think they would be a good pet though…. They are beautiful. I have a few friends that collect owls – not real ones haha haha haha
Years ago, on a Christmas tree at my parents fancy elder community (Erickson community Ashby Ponds) always impressive decorations, and this one had the most adorable little White Owls. Sooooo cute!
This owl!! -> wonderful restoration, Jeanne.
I think the dress will sell quickly. The hat of course was made on a much smaller head form (I noticed earlier this week) so of course it all starts from that point of construction. It is a very sweet outfit and the photos are exceptional
Today is Friday again.
Charlotte, it is good to hear you are having a good time. Yes, fake fur is incredible. I made a fake fur stole for my daughter when she married in November many years ago. it was fancy.
I am packing over here…. discovering shocking wonderful things, yikes.
I listen to podcasts while sitting and going through things.
I hope everyone has a lovely week-end
Jeanne, your little owl is just adorable, and you did a great renovation on his tail feathers! You certainly did get them glued down, so no worries about him flying away! He looks perfectly co tent to sit atop your buffet!
I love that you had that picture of Mae with her pink thigh highs with the dress! That’s how I wouod have her wear them too! It just balances all the pink flowers on her hat down to her cute little chubby legs and gives it a lightness that the dress needs. Not that the dress NEEDS anything, but just balances the pinks. So a bid already!
Speaking of fur, my wedding dress had white mink cuffs, and I am pretty sure it was real fur. That was way back in 1966, when we weren’t so aware of doing things like that. I think almost every older woman I knew had a real mink stole. Hard to believe nowadays, isn’t lit?
I will agree with you about the mink stoles. My mother had one and so did my grandmother. They were worn when there were dinner events. Fancy schmancy for sure. They are still here hanging around in a closet. No idea what to do with them. They were so soft. However, twelve year old grand would be in horror if she knew I had them. 🙂
Joy, I have heard of women who take fur stoles, which are not in favor anymore, and turn them into teddy bears for whoever owns the stole. It’s better than having them stored away in a closet or worse, just thrown out. I have also heard of turning them into pillows. They were meant to be a status symbol and treasured, however in today’s world that would never do.
You reminded me about the teddy’s, but hadn’t thought of pillows. Have to think about that. 🙂
Oh boy, a bidding war approaches. I noticed that there were four bids. It will be so interesting to see the outcome. Mae, will not be a happy camper. Jeanne, may need to make a little outfit for her to wear until it is her turn once again. 🙂
Yesterday, we managed to fill the yard can with cut up apple tree branches. I think that we are about half done. No injuries either. We may bring up our plastic cans and do some more cutting today. Or take a break. Retirement has it’s perks. 🙂
Have a great weekend everyone.
I love owls and your owl is so cute. What a great save on his tail feathers. I’m sure he’s happy to have them back.
I don’t usually watch auctions if I don’t have a doll that fits the outfit but this one should be fun to watch. I’m just glad I won’t be there when Mae hears it’s time to take off her adorable outfit. But there is one plus for her. She comes up often in the dolly outfit rotation. That might make things easier for her.
Sean and Skyy put together my new Ikea five-drawer cart for me the other day. The bottom three drawers are fairly deep and worked as I had hoped for storing my serger thread. Just one thing that is a bit annoying. The drawers are the full depth of the cabinet, but you can’t use about the back four inches of them since you can’t pull the drawer all the way out. This causes things like thread spools to slide backward into the recesses of the drawer. I told Ikea that if they couldn’t make the drawer guides longer and sturdier then they should just make the drawers shorter. If you can’t use the back four inches they are useless anyway. I can’t imagine what anyone would put in the drawers that would not have this problem. I’m going to go with some kind of spacers for the thread drawers. Not sure what I’m going to put in the top two shallower drawers just yet but nothing I can think of won’t have the same problem.
The drawer problem does sound frustrating. But, I guess you can put a block of wood or two back there to stop anything from getting too far back. I’m sure it will be a great piece to have to store things. How about a pic and I’d love to see those Xmas ones too. Never too late as they say. 🙂
That cloche style of hat would be really cute on the PC/AG girls. I’m sure you’re happy to Mae’s outfit finished to list . She will not and now no way will you see a hint of a smile.
Mr, Owl looks great now with his new faux fur tail. My daughter loves owls as motifs and decor. I think it’s because they were so popular on things in the 70’s and she loves that decade.
The remaining faux fur would make a sweet cape pr capelet for another doll. I loved the modacrylic faux fur on the wool coat I used to have. Of course, the best fur is the real kind that sits on your lap and purrs or barks while licking you and the bits you end up wearing on every outfit. 😸🐶❤️❤️
Laura that is so funny and so true. We have four cats and a dog but the pure white cat is the worst! She will pass on a comfortable white lap, much prefers to sleep on black lol. Unfortunately, none of them like each other much though I think the dog would like to play. The three females are united however in their dislike of the one male. He is still only very young and trying very hard to prove he is the boss. Not happening!
Jeanne, I love Mae’s outfit. I think it is going to be very popular going by the bids so far. I love your owl restoration and he is very cute.
Forgot to mention earlier, but did everyone see the ruffled jacket free pattern on Pixie Faire today? It’s for AG’s, but I’m sure it can be printed at 75 percent, I think, for the Ruby Reds. It would be a very cute jacket for spring/summer.
Hi everyone,
My hubby had the second surgery on his leg today… it was on the backside from his ankle to his knee. He said this one was a bit more painful… so now I must play nurse to him… Just wanted to check in with you…
Yes, it seems that Mae’s dress set is very popular… I had someone want to buy it from Facebook Marketplace, someone who wanted to know if I’d ship it to the UK and someone inquired about special orders… :o) but sorry for them…
For those of you who said something… I’ve already stripped Mae of her dress and told her I was looking at new blonde wigs that were thicker with maybe some curls. That seemed to preoccupy her for the time being.
See you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne
