A Civil War doll dress is in the works!

Hi everyone,
I was asking myself which doll did I want to make a dress for before the end of the year? Specifically, who should be the one to get the first Christmas dress? I know it’s late, but things in my life and my husbands have been busy. I do the best I can with my sewing… sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn’t.

So the doll I decided needed a dress was…well, actually I decided on the dress first, then the doll. I decided I wanted to make a Civil War dress… a Christmas Civil War dress.

I looked at all my fabrics and decided on this green and red print for my dress. It’s going to be accented with black to make it a little more dressy.

I decided to use American Girl Rebecca as my Civil War model as her pretty green eyes look wonderful with this fabric.

I only have one more of these buttons I use for brooches on my Civil War dresses.

I only have worked on the bodice, adding vintage black baby rick rack around the armhole seam…and around the sleeve cuffs.

The snaps are sewn to the sleeve cuffs but the back isn’t finished yet…

I will do my best to keep working on the dress…
:o)

Thanks everyone,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, HERE it is!! Your Tuesday blog was nowhere to be found when I checked at 3 a.m., Jeanne–usually it shows up between 1 and 2 my time (PST), and I was getting worried, so I commented on the Monday blog, and wrote comments to Barbara, Karen and Sissy, too. So I’ll let you all go and see what I said if you want to, and here about my toe and all. (big thrill….)

Although my preference is always for the more modern eras, I really like this print–is so rich looking!–and I think it’ll make a wonderful Civil War dress!

Saw your reply to my comment on yesterday’s blog. I guess staying off your feet is not a doable deal, especially at this time of year. Hope this hasn’t set your toe recovering back too much. David’s BP medication has destroyed his teeth and he had all his teeth until he started taking BP meds so he is trying to see if he can get off them since he has lost weight, is exercising regularly and sticks to a healthy diet. So far so good for me. As long as I keep moving my BP is fine.

Jeanne, I love the dress so far, and the “Christmasy” colors too! Rebecca is the sweetest looking doll to give it attention, not that it needs it! I love that button/brooch too, it really brings everything together! Maybe you ca. even add a purist with the new purse fittings you showed us yesterday! However, I’m no expert on if such things were used at that time.

Glad I caught the blog not being where it usually is this morning!

  3. No blog today from Jeanne. Maybe someone out there forgot to hit the include the west button as it looks like Charlotte, didn’t receive it as well.

Love the Civil War dress. I’m sure it will be a big hit.

Going to brave Costco this morning to get gas and hopefully here get to some more leaf raking. It poured again last night so everything is very wet again. But, it looks like Thanksgiving may have a little sun. Yay

Joy, you asked a question about the drawers. One of the great advantages to them is they can be removed from the “frame” they are in and this makes the access even easier. When I buy something for a doll, like shoes that are specific to her, I can just open the drawer and drop them in but when I want to change a doll’s clothes I can move the drawer to a table, or sometimes my recliner if my back needs a rest and go through them easily. I buy them at Walmart and maybe you can check out the website to see what I mean. They also come with casters if you want to be able to move them around. I just need mine in one place so don’t put the casters on and it does make the area look a lot less cluttered since I don’t have a lot of room and I try to make the best use of what I have without feeling too crowded.

      1. Thanks so much for the drawers description. I have a couple in which I store all the photos I’ve never put in albums and it is a lot. The drawers are different sizes, but I get the idea. I’d love the drawers to all be the same size for the dolls. I’m going to take a look at those from WM. not today. Been four places trying to pick up some game thing for youngest grand and even though they said in stock, they weren’t.

This is going to be a lovely dress I’m sure. Such a pretty fabric and I like what you’ve done with the rick-rack. Rebecca is a very pretty doll and looks great in this fabric.

Still working on my sewing room project. I find I need two more sets of drawers so I will get them when I go out to lunch today. Then I need to get all the doll clothes that have been accumulating on my project table into their proper drawers and then maybe I can find some room on the table for sewing projects. I have a pair of shoes on my table that I bought for a dolly someone but I don’t remember who so I’ll have to go find the receipt or look it up on eBay to see whose they are. This problem will be solved with my new arrangement since I will be putting things away as I get them.

Sean and his family left this morning for Indiana. Asking for prayers for their safe journey and that they don’t run into any bad weather since there is evidently a lot of it predicted I’m just not sure for the area they will be in since Sean didn’t know when I asked him. He just told me he goes where his GPS tells him. I guess that’s better than David who second guesses his and tends to turn before he’s supposed to and has to go back – even when I tell him he’s not supposed to turn there. We took a lot of “side trips” before GPS and nothing has changed.

Dear Jeanne, I can just hear the 18 inch dolls who are reading your blog over the shoulders of their Mama saying, “Me, Me, Me! I want that dress!” You may have to make more than one (smile).
