Do you love seeing dolls in costumes?

Today we are blessed to have lots of sweet dolls dressed up in various ways for Halloween… Let’s get to it!

Sissy sent me a dress she made that can be worn by 2 different dolls… the 13″ Dianna Effner Little Darlings and the My Meadow Tween dolls. I think you’ll like this on both dolls…this is what she said in an email to me.

Hi, Jeanne,
This Halloween dress was made from a pattern by Stephanie Ehmen. It was interesting to make, as her pattern had no photos to go by and her style of sewing was very different from what I am used to. I added the sleeves and really love how it came out. It fits both Little Darlings and Meadow Tweens. I tried to sell it, but since it took quite a bit of work to make my price was higher than anyone seemed to want to pay. I really love it so I will just keep it. Here are photos of it on both dolls. First on Shy… (unless Sissy has given her doll another name.)

As always, if you click on any picture it will enlarge.

Here it is on her Little Darling…

I don’t know about everyone else, but I’m betting Laura is loving that Kitty fabric! :o)

Thanks Sissy… it’s too bad it didn’t sell… hold onto it until next year… and you’ll be one dress ahead! :o)

Next up we have some pictures from Linda… I’m sure she wasn’t expecting me to show this dress, and it’s not necessarily a costume, but I’m going to… it was a dress she made for her daughter, Jennifer. Linda tells all about it below in the email she sent.

Jeanne, I mentioned this dress in the blog that ought to work for a Civil War Dress for the holiday’s. Wish I had better pictures, but this was back in 1988, Almost Civil War time for us! LOL! This was a very lightweight brocade, with a pattern you really cannot see here, but it gave body to the fabric and the ruffles stood out so well, not droopy. Now the back might not work for the dolls with the strings, but I just included it for you to see how it was in the back. Maybe you could even make some gloves to go with it too!
This is just a suggestion, if you are stumped sometime on what to make. Do with it what you please!

It really would make a lovely Civil War dress, Linda… thanks for the inspiration! :o)

Jeanne, here are my pictures of the dolls Halloween Celebration!
First up are the 40’s girls, plus Josefina in her Dia de los Muertos outfit. Left to right, Ruthie, in a 50’s poodle skirt (in the 40’s, no less, LOL) Josefina, Molly, dressed as Dorothy, and Susan, a cheerleader, then Betsy and Sara in front.

Here are Las Vegas showgirl(LOL), Cecile , and angelic Kirsten!

Felicity, a Celtic princess, is waiting for her guests and a party!

Modern girls, Emmy, Tinkerbell, Scarlett , a flapper and Ivy, Supergirl, being “Booed by a ghost!

Kaya is not in a costume, but wearing her original Jingle Dress, which has the metal jingles that make noise when she dances. It’s one my favorites for her!

Sara has discovered my dollhouse, decorated for Halloween!

Sara and Betsy are awaiting guests for the big party! As you can see, Sara is fitting in quite well with everyone else and is having a lot more fun than sitting on a shelf!
Love to you,
Linda💕🎃👻

Well, this was a lovely day for dolly outfits, wasn’t it? I hope you enjoyed them…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh, what a fun post, with lots of pictures to look at!

Sissy, that dress really is lovely. I like how the skirt dips up on the side to show the underskirt. The little hair ornament is really nice, too, and the orange tights are a nice touch. Did you make the tights, too?

Linda, that dress is lovely, and a good inspiration for Jeanne! I can see the brocade design in the second picture. I love how the ruffles stand up so nicely–it’s interesting what different weights of fabric will do to the look of a ruffle!

And it’s so much fun seeing all your girls dressed up for Halloween!! You’re right, Sarah just fits right in with the others!! I think my favorite costumes are Scarlett as the Las Vegas showgirl and Cecile as a flapper. Okay, I admit it, I like glitter and sparkle!!

    Thanks for sharing!

Thank you Charlotte! Yes, I made the tights, too. Only think I had in the right color was the top of some panty hose i saved for the color!

Fun things today, Jeanne! Sissy’s dress is SO cute! I really love the kitty fabric, and she shows it off so well in that design! And the cute hair clip too! I don’t know how you could ever part with that set, Sissy!

I think one thing Jeanne forgot to say, was that this is my daughter, Jennifer, showing off the prom dress I made for her, just so no one thinks it is me!! I really enjoyed making that dress, and we have no idea what hp\appened to it, unfortunately. I had found the pictures while looking for somehting else, and thought it would be a pretty pattern for an American Girl dress, perhaps for a Civil War “fancy” ballgown.

I wish the pictures I send could be more consistant as far as lighting goes, but I just take picrues where the dolls are, and sometimes the lighting isn’t quite right, but I try to get pictures during the right time of day. I’m surely not taking anything outside!!!

Sorry about Kaya not having a costume, but I felt she needed to be shown too. After all, she was the nun teacher in my school pictures! At east she has a mask on! LOL

Thak you Charlotte for the compliments! I try to get at least a little “glitter and sparkle” in a couple of the costumes. No hobo’s this year!! 🙂

Dear Linda, what a lovely dress! Your daughter looks so pretty wearing it.

Your doll children look adorable. I am sure it took a while to set up the Halloween scenes. They are very cute.

      1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Dorothy! I really enjoyed making that dress, but I doubt I could do it now! After making clothes for toddlers and dolls, it would seem like a dress for a giant now!😊

It does take time to get everyone ready, not to say the time to find everything and figure out what they will be wearing! The big thing though, is putting away the things they were wearing last! Not fun at all!

I always love your pictures, Linda. Your girls always are dressed to fit the occasion. And your props are the best. No apologies needed for Kaya’s beautiful outfit. Ethnic dress is always enjoyed. When they used to wear costumes to school for one reason or the other, my son Sean would always wear his kilt. We used to attend several Highland Games every year so we bought him a kilt outfit. It was the Logan/MacLennan tartan. David’s one grandmother was a Logan and the other was a Davidson. We loved the Logan tartan so we all wore that.

I see Sara is totally happy in her forever home. She seems to really be enjoying the Halloween festivities. I love her dress. And Betsy, as always, looks absolutely precious. All your girls look ready and eager to do some trick or treating in their wonderful costumes.

Your daughter’s dress is absolutely beautiful and so is she. You did a wonderful job in making the dress a reality. I’ve made prom dresses and I know the time it takes for even the simplest dress. My second step-daughter wanted me to make her prom dress when she was a senior in high school. She brought me a Vogue pattern. Vogue patterns were something I only used on rare occasions and the event had to be really special. But it did beat the resale shop find my oldest step-daughter presented me with for her senior prom. It became a total remake. So sad you lost track of the dress.

Thank you, Barbara! Your words mean so much, since I know you also sew and dress your dolls so beautifully! Jennifer’s husband wore their family kilt at their wedding, so I know a thing about those. They are from the MacArthur clan.

Oh yes, Vogue patterns were special ones, to be sure. I do think this prom dress was a Vogue, and I remember making her First Communion dress, which was also a .Vogue pattern. They always were more expensive than the usual Simplicity or Butterick patterns, and a bit more professional.

Oh yes, Sara is happy as a bug in a rug here with all her playmates and oodles of things to do, plus pretty dresses to wear! We should be so lucky!

Linda you always give us such a wonderful fun of fabulous scenes! I love the outfits, the food, the dolls, and doll house, you are so decorative! And your beautiful daughter in that fabulous dress! Thank you for always brightening our day!
Thank you for the kind words about my kitty dress.

          1. Linda in St. Louis

Sissy, thank you so much for your compliments! You are such a talented seamstress, it means a lot to get such wonderful words from you!

        2. Barbara in SE Texas

How wonderful that Jennifer’s husband wore a kilt in his family tartan for their wedding. David and I weren’t involve in Scottish things when we married. I would have loved him to have worn a kilt. I have some wonderful pictures of us from the Burn’s Supper and the Tartan Ball and him wearing his kilt. The tartan I know of from my family is McHenry but I believe they were a sept of the MacDonald clan.

  3. Susette from Southern California

That’s a darling dress you designed and sewed, Sissy. I wouldn’t be able to let it go either. I haven’t seen that angle on an overskirt before. Perfect! Cute hair bow, too.

Linda, that truly is the prettiest dresses I’ve ever seen, and you are the seamstress! Wonderful to be able to sew it for your own daughter. Wouldn’t it be beautiful on Samantha?

The scenes are all so amazing with so many clever and interesting details. What a collection you have! Glad you take such good pictures to share with us, especially when Jeanne is busy getting ready for the annual student Halloween party. I’m sure it’s a highlight of their stay in this country! 🎃

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you Susette! Yes, Samantha would look lovely in a dress like that, even Addy!

I did have fun putting the Halloween scenes together, and more fun just looking at it when it is finished, and being able to show it to people who appreciate it!

  4. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, thanks for showing us what the Sofa Sisters have been up to for Halloween.

One month until Thanksgiving, two months until Christmas, many months until May.

Interesting, but I didn’t receive the blog this morning. Have no idea why, but found it from yesterdays.
Anyway, Sissy’s dress is adorable. What a creative use of fabric and a great pattern. Love it.
How fun to see Linda’s daughter and friends before the prom. What a great mom she was to make that lovely dress. It was beautiful.
Always thrilled to see the Halloween, decorations and perfectly attired dolls at Linda’s place. Had to make a quick run through as I’m late and need to get outside and do some deck work. But, I’ll be back later to take in more details and get ideas. 🙂 Love the ghost and very excited seeing how well RR Sara fits in with everyone. Adorable photo too of her viewing the fully decorated dollhouse. 🙂 She looks so cute with Betsy, and I’ll bet Emmy would like to join in their fun too next year.
Thanks Jeanne, Sissy, and Linda for sharing the great photos.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Joy! I can’t believe how different prom dresses are now compared to 1988, when I took those pictures! It would have been a lot easier and a lot less material, I will say that!

Got the ghost at Michael’s and it is really supposed to be hanging on something, but I propped it up on a stand for the modern girl’s scene. Yes, Sara is fitting in just fine and having a ball! Ivy has to keep an eye on Emmy, her little sister, so she stays close. One of these days Ivy will get tired of that!😊

      1. Barbara in SE Texas

I remember my proms as being lovely affairs with the boys in white dinner jackets and the girls in beautiful spring gowns. When Andrea was little in the early 1980s the owner of the daycare showed us pictures of her daughter heading for her prom. She and her date were dressed like Bonnie and Clyde. Seriously.

  6. Oh my, so much to see here today.
Linda, the dress is incredible. I can see the brocade. Wow, just stunning. I love the back too
Thank you everyone for sharing these adorable Halloween costumes. They are sensational!
Sissy, the dress is so adorable, I love the fabric.
I hope to get out in the yard this afternoon and ….. rake.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Rosemary! The color really doesn’t show up here or in the picture very well, it was taken back in 1988, and the quality of the picture itself wasn’t like today’s phone camera’s. And thank you for the wonderful compliments on the costumes!

  7. Ha ha, Jeanne, the first thing that crossed my mind was oh, wow, black kitty fabric. Instant winner in my book.
That dress and pinafore is so adorable, Sissy! I like that the one side comes up to show the black cat fabric underneath. The hairbow and black kitty friend complete the look purrfectly, It is a meowvolous creation. and very creative of mew. 🥰🐈‍⬛🥰

Linda, that dress on Jennifer is wonderful. The brocade is beautiful and I love the way the back ties. It reminds me a little of the long sleeved version of the dress I wore to The President’s Ball in college in 1987 at Christmastime. My dress then ended up with a cousin, I believe who needed one for a winter formal.
Wow, you have been busy, Linda, putting together one fabulous scene after another with all the extras. Ruthie is a trendsetter for sure wearing something ahead of its time. Sara just moves in and already has a appropriate dress for the season. Felicity makes a lovely Celtic princess. Emmy looks so cute as Tinkerbell. Everyone looks wonderful.
I think Sara is wondering and hoping she might be able to fit in the dollhouse..
Sara and Betsy look so sweet preparing for their party. Their black kitty friend is a fun extra. Thanks for sharing all of the great scenes. May my three RRFFs join in?

  8. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Laura! I would think you would remember dresses like that, since you and Jennifer are about the same age. Did your mother sew for you too?

Ruthie wearing a 50’s costume gave me pause for a minute there, but oh well, more fun, and who is going to put me in jail for that?😊

Actually, Emmy wore that dress last year that Sara is now wearing, so she had a ready made dress waiting for her, since Emmy was Tinkerbell. There is a lot of trading dresses around between Betsy, Emmy and Sara.

Sure, your three RRFF’s can come right over, but since I only have Molly’s bed, they might have to bring their sleeping bags if they spend the night! What fun that would be!😊

    1. Yes, my mom sewed for me. She made my 8th grade graduation and confirmation dresses as well as other things. And then there was the night that I came home from school in fifth grade and and announced the following day we were allowed to wear prairie style the next day instead of our uniforms if we wanted. Of course I wanted to.. A quick trip to the fabric store and she made me a tiered skirt and that was with having to get up for work the next morning.
You never know, the doll police might get you.
Wish we all could get together and have fun with our dolls.

I love the pretty dress Sissy made. I’d say I’m sorry she couldn’t sell it but in a way I’m glad she got to keep it. She obviously worked hard on it and will probably appreciate the dress more than anyone else. After I make a new outfit I set the dolls on the coffee table in front of my chair so I can admire my workmanship and how cute they all look. Yes I almost fell over patting myself on the back LOL. When the end of the table runs out of room, I put those dolls back on their shelf and start over again. I realized the other day I really can’t sell the things I make unless I specifically make it for someone else. It might be a fault of mine but I’m not sure I want to change it just yet.

David and Sean put up my new black cats yesterday and it’s fun to watch them move their heads from side to side. They look like they’re on the prowl. The others had become so weak they barely moved their heads at all. In the evening in the dark they seem very eerie.

Forgot to thank everyone for sending the pictures to Jeanne and thanks to Jeanne for posting them. It was fun.

    2. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Thank you, Barbara, Meadow Shy is standing on a shelf with others. She is very happy that it didn’t sell.
