AARRGHH! Where are my tiny metal buttons???

WOW! Charlotte certainly “nailed” the color for Mae’s latest leather shoes… Boysenberry! I googled Boysenberry and knew instantly she was right… look at this comparison…

…next to the shoes…

A+++ Miss Charlotte! Thanks!

Did you read Joy’s dolly capers yesterday? If not, go back and read her comments. I’m telling you, she could write a book about how she tries to sneak “dolly” things into her house without being found out… This one was great! :o)

Okay, if my capital letters in the title made you think I was screaming, you were almost right! Kristoffer bought me some tiny metal buttons last October from Amazon and I think there were over 100 in the package… a few different sizes… 3mm, 4mm and 5mm… They were in a little plastic package and I must have put them “some place so they wouldn’t get lost!” Well, guess what? I have lost them… I have turned my sewing room upside down and still can’t find them. I’ve tried to think of the last time I used them and it was probably for a purse or maybe some jeans… anyway, I will still keep searching but I don’t know where else they could be… hopefully not thrown away!

However, I did get the denim jacket finished (except for the buttons!) and Sara wanted to show you…

I just have the brown fabric laid under her jacket for now… still trying to decide what I’ll make from it.

Here is Sara with the fabric pulled down a little longer on her legs…

This would be sort of what it would look like if the dress/skirt were shorter…

I made the sleeves longer this time… and I’m trying to figure out how to make a detachable brown cuff so it looks like the jacket matches the dress.

I slipped just a scrap of the gold and white striped knit behind the jacket to see what it might look like with a top/tee made from it…

The fabric might seem busy to you… someone said it seemed so, but in person it really isn’t.

Well, that’s what I sewed on today… hope you like it.

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. (bowing) ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿ˜‚

Actually, I’ve always had a really good eye for color, and ever a pretty good color memory (they say the average color memory is about 3 seconds when looking at and then later trying to identify a particular color), but I guess I’ve worked with fabrics and colors so much and for so long (I’ve been sewing since 1956), that some things are just ingrained into my being. Either that, or I was born with this particular gift and I had nothing to do with it whatsoever. It’s just a gift, like my mother could sing.

Oh, Jeanne, I know that feeling!! I’m assuming you have looked thru the rest of your buttons. How about looking thru things like snaps and such? Or maybe you tucked them up on a shelf to use with something else “later” and they are still waiting? If you have a catch-all drawer in your sewing room, you might look there, too. Might they be with your tiny magnets, by any chance?? So frustrating!!

I see you used a sort of gold thread for topstitching the denim jacket, and that really does help. You could still do some kind of cuff or binding of the print, or use it maybe to make a little fabric brooch for the jacket instead?

Oh, yes, I think having a t-shirt of the stripe and then a skirt of the print. Very cute! I would wait to decide on the skirt length until you see all the pieces together; it could be it will look better if the skirt is a bit longer. Mainly, you don’t want the shoulder-to-waist, waist-to hem, hem-to-boot-top lengths to be all the same. One should be a little longer than the rest, for a more balanced look.

AbbyRose is ready to go out for lunch! I have my camera in my purse! See you all tomorrow.

Charlotte, I know what you mean about color since! I seem to have it too. I used to make and sell decorative pillows at craft shows and I would get so frustrated with women who would say, “I just can’t tell if it would go with my…..” . I remember once when there was some sort of color test when you had to line up a long line of color pieces that changed just a tiny bit. You were supposed to line them up in the right order. I always got them right. As you said, just born with it.

      1. Charlotte Trayer

I think I’ve tried that test a time or two. I don’t recall how I did, but I think it was pretty pretty well, if not 100% perfect!

I think color memory is a gift. I recognized years ago that I could match or coordinate fabrics without having the fabric I’m trying to match with me. Probably a good thing because I’d most likely forget to take it with me in the first place. I thought it was just an ability that everyone had but I’ve gone shopping with enough people to realize that the subtleties in colors and tints are not picked up by everyone. I had a horrible time convincing my sister once that the jacket she picked to go with a blouse was not the same color that was in the blouse. It actually didn’t look good with it at all. She finally settled on something neutral. I breathed a sigh of relief.

      1. Charlotte Trayer

Yup, I can do that, too–match something I don’t have with me. Now, thread colors, I do want the fabric with me, because thread looks different with just one strand against the fabric as opposed to an entire spool.

My girlfriend Liz has told me more than once, she’s amazed at how I can put fabrics together (such as for quilting). When we were in the fabric store and talking about how to choose coordinating fabrics, etc., I’d have her choose something, and then I’d find things that would work with it. She was always surprised by some of the things that worked well!

Congratulations, Charlotte, on your expertise of color recognition! You nailed it exactly!

Oh Jeanne, you are not alone in putting things where you can easily find them, and then not able to find them! I am embarrassed to say how many times I have done that! You WILL find them, but probably when you are looking for something else! Charlotte did give a good variety of suggestions where you might find them.

So far I do love that jacket, and prefer the skirt with the longer length. It just looks better and more proportioned. I like the idea of a fabric flower on it like Charlotte mentioned. Yes, doing the blouse and leggings the same stripe looks really cute! I canโ€™t help but think thatโ€™s MY Sara that your sew sewing for, since they look exactly alike! LOL

Looking forward to your pictures, Charlotte!

  3. First off, Joy, your story is hysterrrrrical! Are you sure your other person is not aware of your mischief? Yes my hubbs is easily fooled hahahaha but then again, he does not ask questions.
    Even a huge box.
Enjoy your toys, I know they are perfect.
My grand girls are getting AG dolls this week-end. I want to start sewing tiny clothes
This jacket looks beautiful Jeanne. I hope you find the tiny buttons.
I promise you they are not hiding and laughing at you.
You might need to take your whole house apart and put it back together again.
Ask me how I know that??
Enjoy this Halloween. Our turn out each year dwindles. I have enough treats and always make treat bags with candy and print out puzzles and add to them along with our address so they know.

Thanks Rosemary. You’re lucky your “hubbs” doesn’t ask questions. ๐Ÿ™‚
I’m sure your grands will love anything you make for their AG’s. Fun

I love Sara’s jacket just like it is. No other fabric needed in my mind. It’s adorable and I hope the buttons turn up somewhere soon. As to the outfit underneath, how about a cute jumper? That would break up the overall busy look I think. And then add a simple little tee shirt underneath that wouldn’t interfere with putting on the jacket. Looks like you have some of that striped fabric there already which would be perfect for the tee. It’s going to be a great outfit. As to the buttons, since they are small and likely to be lost, did you put them in a drawer in the sewing room near your work area? Or, in a dish or spot near where you took the last jacket to do the hand sewing? I’m sure they will turn up where ever you left them. Ha ha. Now, that’s something that I would do.
I’ve been having fun thinking about how I can use that new AG Blaire’s restaurant now living here. I had planned to only use the kitchen side, but after seeing the large semi covered area where meals might be served, I thought that it would be perfect as a dance pavilion, or a gathering place for hot chocolate after skating/skiing, or a Christmas tree sales spot. Lots of ideas here, but now I’m working of some brightly colored things that are a kick.
Rained last night, so no deck work today. I do need to get over to Joann’s, but might be a madhouse today with last minute Halloween shoppers.
Here, we don’t get trick or treaters, but we may take little Winnie pup next door a treat. ๐Ÿ™‚ Happy Halloween

Dear Joy, I just read about your caper. Pshew! I can’t wait to see the AG set. Please send Jeanne a picture when you get it set up.

I was on pins and needles when you said you lost part of your new set. I was holding my breath while your head was down in the trash can searching and I could just see you throwing trash right and left. I was glad you had not accidentally put the parts in the trash but empathized with your dilemma in trying to figure out what you had done with them. And I breathed a sigh of relief when you reloaded the trash can before other person returned. But I would have loved to see you explain that one. I breathed a further sigh of relief when you finally found what you were looking for and realized all was not lost. Can’t wait to see what you do with your new purchase. Sounds like there is a lot of fun in store for the future.

Dear Jeanne, I know what you mean. I am ALWAYS putting things in a “safe place” and then not being able to find them. For a while I tried to write down where I put things in a little notebook. I have no idea where that is now.

I am not a fan of scary Halloween. I don’t know why it has gotten away from the cute Halloween or our childhood. But anyway, Happy (cute) Halloween to you and the Sofa Sisters.

  6. Who hasnโ€™t put something somewhere so it doesnโ€™t get lost. My experience has been to go back to the first place I thought it was, and I find I incorrectly remembered the container it was in and there she be!! Good luck and hope they turn up soon.

Love your improved shoe design. Perfect to me! A jumper or sleeveless dress always opens lots of options. How about a long sleeve tee made from the striped fabric and the tee sleeves showing beyond the jacket sleeves so no alternate cuff is needed? Or maybe armlets? A detachable fabric flower corsage as Charlotte suggested is always such a nice accessory. And makes the jacket perfect for other outfits! (Because you know we all have that favorite jacket that we wear with everything!).
Happy Halloween and have a great day all.

  7. I missed responding to Joy’s caper yesterday as read the blog late. Lots of outdoor work to finish up before cold.
Blaire’s restaurant will be so much fun, Joy, and I’m sure you’ve seen FB members using it for their RRFFs. I’d love to see you dolly room sometime. It must be fabulous.
Yep, those shoes are boysenberry for sure. Great call on the color, Charlotte.
Sara’s outfit will be quite cute and prefer the longer length of skirt. I’m sure the buttons will turn up.
Happy All Hollow’s Eve to all the Sofa Sisters. ๐Ÿˆโ€โฌ›๐ŸŽƒ๐Ÿ•ธ๏ธ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธ๐Ÿฌ๐Ÿญ๐Ÿ‘ป

My guests left early this morning to visit his brother in north Texas. We had a lovely visit and considering that David and his friend had not seen each other since they were in high school and we didn’t know his wife at all, it turned out to be a very relaxing visit. I spent a lot of time showing and explaining my dolly passion to his wife and even though it is not an interest of hers she did like seeing the dolls, clothes I made and the photo shoots. I was ready for a little downtime though. Being on my own pretty much most days, spending three solid days totally focused on others in order to make sure they felt welcome was a bit draining for an introvert such as myself. Now I’m trying to get myself back on track to accomplishing things, especially reading and commenting on the blog.

I really love the new little boysenberry shoes. Charlotte is right on with the name of the color. I missed seeing the blog entirely yesterday so when I saw the start of todays, I realized I had to go back to yesterday to get the whole picture. I think a jumper would be nice too with a top made from the t-shirt material that matches the thigh highs. I love the thigh highs and the denim jacket. I like the idea of leaving the jacket as is and maybe doing a floral accent to pull it together with the dress, skirt, jumper or whatever the main piece turns out to be.

Well it’s getting close to the time Sean and company will be here for the Boo Bash. We’ve had a lot of rain so far today but it looks like things are clearing up in time for the festivities.
