A little “Wig Working Wonder” for Mae!

HI everyone,
Thank you all for your comments yesterday on my 10th Anniversary of writing this blog! I am so thrilled that so many of you commented and told me how much you enjoy it. I do too and hope to keep at it for a long time.

Speaking of time… I didn’t have much today. My hubby and I are in the middle of helping my cousin who lives down in Florida get his mobile home and garage (here) resided with new vinyl siding and new shutters. My hubby has been doing LOTS of work getting things in order, finding a contractor, pricing materials, getting bids, etc… and I’ve been helping too. Today we had to go check out one more place for siding and it took longer than we thought. So, my time in my sewing room was very limited.

I decided to do something fun and hopefully make something better than what it was when I got it.

Remember that darker blonde wig I showed on Mae yesterday? This one…I had actually “swept” the bangs to the sides in that picture.

Well, if you thought it looked bad in “that” picture… take a look at it on her in “this” picture… this is how it actually looked when I first put it on her.

The bangs were TOO long and TOO thick… I’m not kidding…I bet they were 1/2″ thick… and they had a mind of their own…
The back was just as bad… The curls were springy but they kept springing back to the same spot… it was pretty awful.

BUT… the other day I was at our Thrift shop and I found these thinning scissors…and I had a plan…

The plan was to lift up the bangs and start thinning them layer by layer until they laid better… It took me MANY MANY times of thinning them and then combing out the cut hairs and then doing it again and again. Layer after layer like this…

I was doing it on a rolled up piece of leather because I didn’t want to be using the scissors so close to Mae’s face. Anyway after about an hour or so of thinning and thinning, I decided to try it on Mae and see what it looked like… a MESS or a MIRACLE!

You might have your own opinion, but I think it’s pretty much a miracle… she looks pretty cute now. I took some curls from each side and pulled them into a pony tail… then tied them with a ribbon…

I need to add some extra elastic to the inside of the wig as it has a tendency to slide around on her head. It needs to have a tighter fit to her head. Maybe I can fix it by putting some sticky Velcro on the wig and on her head or use some of my Museum Wax…

So that’s what I did with this $1.50 wig from Ebay… Now I have to ask Joy, “Do you still think it still looks like an old lady style?” I was thinking of your comment the whole time I was working on the wig… :o)

See everyone Monday… Have a wonderful weekend.
Blessings, Jeanne

Wow! What a difference that thinning and trimming made in that wig!! Yup, miracle, I’d say!! It’s really cute on Mae.

Congratulations on your blog’s 10th anniversary, Jeanne. I think I first found out about it when we were in the same Little Darlings internet group way back when. This is such a lovely, friendly, supportive group of women (at least mostly women, it seems–don’t know if you have any men subscribers), and I’ve made some real friendships here!

Congrats on adding Mae to your dolly family, too. She’s such a sweetie.

I don’t know what happened last night. Well, I Think I do. I Think what happened is, since I no longer get the blog from the idreamofjeannemarie address and only from the mailchimp (“jeanne”) one, it comes much later than I am (sometimes!) on the computer. When I was getting it from idreamofjeannemarie, it would be in my inbox at 1 a.m. Pacific time. The time stamp on yesterday’s email was 3:01, and I think my computer was already off by then or I was on it but doing a jigsaw puzzle on it, and not paying attention to emails. Thank you, Dorothy, for missing me! By the way, I saw the Facebook pictures of the UFDC banquet, and it looked like it was really wonderful and a lot of fun. Have you seen those pictures? (I know you don’t do FB, but maybe someone showed you.) Are you in any of them? Just curious.

Now, I have gone to wordpress and tried to sign in, but I have no password written down Anywhere for them, so I tried a couple of “early” ones that I used to use fairly often–no dice. Then, when I tried to get them to send me a link to put in a new password, it wouldn’t let me.

So now I have “subscribed” to the blog (again) and hope tomorrow when I look, all my sign-in info will be there when I reply to something! We shall see. But you might let your computer guru know all this, Jeanne; maybe it will help her figure out what’s going on for some of us with your blog.

Lastly a little update: Ron was seen by Dispatch Health (think old-fashioned house calls, but that’s all they do), and had a chest x-ray today, as he is Still coughing. It turns out he does still have a touch of pneumonia. We wondered about that. No new meds yet–he just finished a course of long-acting antibiotics last Saturday–but if he hasn’t improved in 5 days, we are to call his primary care doctor.

    1. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Prayers still going up for Ron, Charlotte! So sorry, too, that you blog is acting up. Computers are weird animals for sure.

    2. Joy in northern CA

Almost the same thing happened to me with Word Press yesterday. I ended up re subscribing and that did the trick. Now, I receive the same email “jeanne”, as you that arrives much later than usual.
Sure hope you can contact Ron’s, doctor and get some stronger antibiotics for his pneumonia. Nothing to mess with for sure.

    3. Barbara in SE Texas

Continuing prayers for Ron and you. I remember when we came back from Hawaii in 2002 David came down with the worst case of pneumonia. We were wondering if he may have contracted it in the hotel or maybe on the plane. I still believe he had Legionnaire’s disease. It took some high powered antibiotics and a longer series than usual to get rid of it. it was pretty scary because he didn’t seem to be getting better until after it was totally gone.

Dear Charlotte, I am glad you are alright. I always look for you to be first!

I don’t have FB but the videos can been seen by anyone, thank goodness for that (smile). I am in the video the one of the line to get into the salesroom. That is why 900 people were standing so patiently(?) – laugh. I am towards the end with my mask and cane.

      1. I spotted you Dorothy! You really were almost at the end of the line… poor thing… I don’t see how there would be anything left with that many people in line… I hope you found something…
        Blessings, Jeanne

        1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, I found a beautiful doll that I really wanted. Picture to follow.

      2. Charlotte Trayer

Thanks, Dorothy! I’ll try to look at the video again and see if I can spot you!

      3. Charlotte Trayer

I think I saw you! Maybe… standing behind a lady in white slacks, and next to a lady in blue? And waving?

        1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Charlotte, hello. Yes! I have on a green jacket and a red plaid shirt. I am waving. The video was filmed by the Club President. I had to watch the video again because I couldn’t remember what I had on.

    5. Thanks Charlotte,
I thought I could turn it into a cute wig for Mae… but there was SO much hair in those bangs… I was beginning to doubt myself.
Thanks for being with me all these years Charlotte… you start my day off right! :o)
I’m hoping all the hiccups settle down in a few days… I’m dealing with people flooding my dashboard with all kinds of offers to help my blog grow. I’m going to ask Sarah if I can do away with them… I just trash them all anyway.
I do hope the right antibiotics can help Ron get better quickly… I know it must be hard to see him so weak and not himself. Make him something homemade from your kitchen and maybe that will do it…
Keep us in the loop, Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Linda in St. Louis

Well, I got thrown off yesterday, since I was waiting for Charlotte, but now see that she had some problems, so wasn’t able to get on. I am now having problems with my “Ancestry” account! Talk about getting the run around! One of these days I’ll get there!

Oh Jeanne, how darling that wig looks now! I think I was taken aback when I saw how the wig looked yesterday! I thought it made Mae look like a little old lady! But now, bingo! She looks her age, and so cute! I think you are going to have a lot of fun with her!

Each morning, I check the blog from the day before, since I go to bed fairly early, and could not believe the over 50 comments this morning! It took awhile to read through them, but I am so glad you were able to comment too, and that we had quite a few people comment that normally don’t. Of course, it was a big day for you, and rightfully so!

    1. HI Linda,
It seems like the problems are sort of working themselves out… but not totally gone yet. Maybe in another week all will be well… let’s hope so.

I’m glad you like the “new” wig now… I was it was either darker or red or as Joy said, a lighter blonde… it definitely has LOTS of hair in it, but sort of dull color. Maybe a hat will work well with this one… or brightly colored ribbons.

It’s nice to find time to comment…and I feel like I’m back in touch with everyone… where before you were all on your own…
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Jeanne, the wig is adorable on her, great job! Hmmmm, I forgot about thinning scissors, I used to have some. Wonder what happened to them.

I hope to get started sewing for my Moppets after I return from MDCC. The only sewing I have been doing is for the auction for St. Jude. This year it is one special Little Darling with donors giving outfits to go with her. I have made a nautical outfit and will send photos soon, after finding shoes to go with it.
Looking forward to seeing your first outfit for your Mae.

    1. Hi Sissy,
I was actually surprised the thinning scissors worked as well as they did… and was happy with how the wig turned out. Mae looks pretty little girlish now!
I was looking at a nautical dress pattern for Mae, but haven’t decided just yet what will be her first dress. This is hard… deciding! :o/

      thanks Sissy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. What you’ve done to Mae’s wig is so sweet and youthful. She looks adorable. You have a knack with styling hair. Sometimes the wigs really are extremely thick and hard to maneuver when dressing them even.

Jeanne, just the other day, my niece and I got laughing about the Swifter doll. My niece came up with an idea and I’ll send a picture of it if you’re looking for something to show …. and a laugh.

Karen… thinking of you- hope the baby comes soon .

    1. HI Paula,
Thanks for the compliments on Mae’s new wig styling… now if I can just get it to stay in place… that will help a lot.
Yes, I’d love to see a new version of the Swiffer doll story… It still makes me laugh…
      Thanks Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. Joy in northern CA

Oh, my gosh. What a difference Jeanne, makes. That wig is such a save. Very cute on Mae. I only wish it was a lighter color blond, but you can’t have everything. 🙂 Would thinning scissors work on Reuben for a summer cut? Just curious.
So happy to have fresh cucumbers and tomatoes around here. Definitely seems like summer. This will be a watering twice kind of day with the temperature in the high nineties, I’m guessing. My first row of tiny zinnia’s are now in bloom. Yay.
    Keep cool everyone.

    1. Joy in northern CA

I completely forgot to mention that a silicone wig cap would be perfect for Mae’s wigs. If you don’t have one, some use white balloons cut across and placed around the head where the wig edges would reside. You can also use those simple stretchy silicone plastic bracelets that are everywhere and even thicker rubber bands. All those work as well as a Mack’s earplug stuck on top of the head. I would not use the sticky velcro as the glue could cause damage to the head.

      1. Over the weekend I plan to see if I can find some way to keep this wig on her head… it’s really just sliding around… I think the wig cap is sort of flat… no curved shape to it… that’s why I thought a row of elastic might work best…we’ll see…
        Thanks Joy,

    2. Thanks Joy,
I’m glad it was Joy-approved! I found myself googling to see if doll wigs could be dyed… they can be but sometimes they leave marks on the dolls head… so I think I’ll pass on that… I certainly don’t want any stains on Mae…

Reuben gets a hair cut with clippers… his hair is SO thick… it’s like carpeting…
Schnauzers are known for their thick hair on their legs… It was told in Germany, they were used for things where rats lived, but the rats couldn’t bite through their thick hairy legs… I guess Reuben got a double portion of thick hair… his is EXTREMELY thick.
We want to see your Zinnia’s…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. your wig “remodel” turned out incredibly cute!!
I am glad to read these comments and feel hopeful about everyone.
    Keep cool and happy!!

    1. Thanks Rosemary…
I’m glad you liked the wig redo! I think Mae likes it too… I’m hoping to find time to get to know her a little bit this weekend… yay!
I wish coolness and happiness for you too!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Barbara in SE Texas

How adorable!! I was amazed at the wig transformation. Mae looks absolutely precious. I bought a new “hairdo” for my L’il Dreamer Jovi the other day. I had switched out her more formal “do” that she came in for a pretty long-haired wig at Easter but she said her long hair was just too hot for summer. So I bought a wig the same color with a braid in the back. She definitely looks much cooler now.

After a slight reprieve summer is back in full force here. Two more months to go.

    1. Thanks Barbara,
I’m glad, you too, like her new wig restyled…
I’ve seen some of those wigs with the thick braid down the back and actually have one that Cindy sent me… I’m not sure which doll it might fit, but it is on the larger size… so I might try it on Mae too.
We are feeling the full force of Summer too. The last 2 days we have been in an Excessive Heat Warning… yesterday the heat index was supposed to have been 110 -115… but I don’t know if it ever made it that high… I was too busy…
Oh well.. I’m glad it’s the weekend..
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. And today the Jeanne mailchimp one comes back to my promo folder instead of inbox. The Idream… is still MIA. I’m going to subscribe again to see if it might bring that one back.

Aww, Mae looks cute in her new wig and the ponytail are adorable. Those thinning scissors did the trick.

    1. Hi Laura,
Maybe things will be normal next week… I’m glad you are still getting “something” from me…
Thanks for liking the wig… those thinning scissors REALLY did work on it.
I think she looks pretty cute… now to figure out a dress for her. I’m having a hard time deciding…
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Elizabeth in Texas

Darling hairstyle for a little girl doll! You did an excellent job of thinning out those bangs! Looking forward to seeing the doll in clothes….all of those flexible “joints” are a bit much to look at! But then I’ve never owned a doll with so many movable joints….only the Ruby Red dolls.

    1. HI Elizabeth,
I’m glad you like the new wig too… As far as all the articulated joints, I’ve never owned a doll with this many joints either… I think Ten Ping has 27, but I haven’t counted Mae’s. This might be interesting!
Thanks so much for your comments… and welcome.. (I think you might be new to commenting?)
      Blessings, Jeanne

Dear Jeanne, you are truly the “wig whisper” (smile). Mae looks adorable after your wig ministrations.

    1. HI Dorothy,

      Thanks, Jeanne

Your blog is getting very International Jeanne with Alina from Poland, Georgina from France and myself. I wonder if there are others who follow but don’t comment.
It was Very cold this morning There is quite a frost outside. At least we should see the sun for a few days. Apparently Seb loves the cold better than the heat!!! I finished his jacket and I didn’t realise that he was so big. I thought he would be more like a slightly older version of Jono. Anyway I had made the largest size but it is slightly small. Not much I can do about it. He loved it anyway and it is unique, there are only the two like it since the design was Kai’s. I still have kai’s to finish, but I need to buy more lining and more ribbing. I thought the ribbing was double but unfortunately not, so I had to join it to get the length and used up what I thought would be enough for Kai’s. The sleeve lining defeated me in the end. I could not work out from the one small picture on the instruction sheet how to sew the sleeve to the lining at the wrist. In the end I hand sewed it. Then, when I went to do the very last bit of top stitching on the zip I felt something quite hard and was at a loss for a while to think what it could be. I had used clips when I sewed the ribbing together and I had left one behind inside the lining!!! I had to manoeuvre it to the other front of the jacket and unpick the stitching where I had closed the lining after turning everything right side out, then fiddle the clip out of the hole then stitch it up again. Grr. I will send a photo when I have finished Kai’s.
I had better go and start my day. You all have a great time

    1. HI Anne,
I do have several places that my blog goes too… I can see the countries, but not the names of the people who get it… maybe they’ll see this and respond. it would be fun to know who is where…

I’m sorry, but I had to sort of laugh when you said you felt something inside the jacket and discovered it was a clip left inside… I’ve done silly things like that before… and you know instantly what it has to be… but it still takes time to maneuver it to the place where you can take it out…
Please do show us the finished jacket when you are all done…
      Thanks Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    2. Joy in northern CA

Well, finding that clip still inside would probably have done me in. But, you saved the day. Good for you. Really would like to see Kai’s when finished. 🙂

  13. Jeanne, you are a miracle worker! Thinning the bangs combined with putting the curls into ponytails results in the look of a brand new wig!
