The doll that keeps on giving…

Linda, it’s NEVER too late for any holiday dress you get your dolls dressed up. She didn’t get Betsy in her 4th of July outfit, but she’s in it now!!!

Linda said: She wasnā€™t in the original picture I sent, since I couldnā€™t find anything for her that would fit in, but I thought this might do. Itā€™s her Scissor Dress. She is also wearing some Jeanne Marie sandals, but you can only see one.
I hope this isnā€™t too late for a Fourth of July picture!
Love to you,
LindašŸ’•

My Betsy McCall has that same exact dress, her scissor dress too! Mine has matching shoes, did yours have them?

I managed to get a sweet little outfit for Ten Ping listed on Ebay tonight. It was her original outfit that was never worn by her. She didn’t even remember I had it wrapped up in tissue paper, put in her box and up in the closet. Don’t anyone tell her where it went! :o)

Here it is, the outfit that came with her when I bought her in 2015. The outfit is very sweet, but since I sew for my dolls, I generally sell them… I waited a LONG time on this one, but one thing I know… I’m never planning to sell Ten Ping, so the outfit was listed.
UPDATE: It sold an hour after I listed it…

Now this is the doll my title refers to… the doll that keeps on giving…
This is a Corolle doll… they smell like Vanilla which is nice if you like Vanilla! She was nice and clean and she was the doll who only had the one sandal…

She’s almost the same size as 14″ Betsy McCall and the 13″ Dianna Effner Little Darlings…

They have teeny tiny sleep eyes and eyelashes!

So she came in this romper and I got out Janie to see if it fit her… It “almost” did. I mean it fit her but not well around the arms…

I think it would be cuter with a little bit wider legs across the hips.

I think if the tucks were let out of the front, it would work… it needs to be wider across the chest for the Little Darlings.

Now it also came with this fun hat… that looks P-R-E-T-T-Y cute on Janie… it’s made from burlap and I think it would make a great felt hat…

So I got the shoe for a pattern, the romper for a possible pattern and a hat for another possible pattern… 3 ways that doll kept giving to me.

Now I have to show you this wig shown on Janie. I found it on Ebay for a song, and the pictures weren’t on a doll head, but maybe on a ball or even just on a stick… I can’t remember… but the pictures DEFINITELY did NOT indicate that it was a zig zag part on top and the sides were chopped off way up high… It was a Monique doll wig, and I could tell it a synthetic mohair wig, my favorite brand and kind…

I think I may have seen a picture of the back and thought, “Oh, I can fix that… it just needs an even trim around the bottom!”

So I’m a bit stumped as to how to fix it… I’ve had on Janie for a while, trying to get inspiration on what to do… she just looks at me with a look, like, “Can’t you do something about this wig?”

I guess I’ll keep that hat on her head… it’s the best Janie has looked in the weeks since I put the wig on her head. Poor girl!

Thanks everyone,
I’ll see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Linda, your picture of Betsy is just darling. Sure, the scissors dress works just fine for July 4th!

Wow, that auction of TenPings original outfit went quickly!! Good for you.

My goodness, that doll certainly does keep on giving! So many different ideas floating around now. That hat looks adorable on Janie.

As to her wig….I suppose you could just trim a bit here and there to kind of even things out; I’m really and truly Not the one you should be asking for hair advice!! šŸ˜‚ I’ve always said, God knew what He was doing when He gave us a boy! With boys, all you have to do pretty much is to cut their hair short, and maybe comb it now and then!

Thank you, Charlotte! I guess the scissor dress does work out for the 4th after all!!

Oh, surprise! I didnā€™t know if you had room for another picture from me, but Betsy looked so cute and perky, I just thought I would send it in anyway! Yes, Jeanne, I do have her matching shoes, but I like the sandals you made better. I also have the hair band, that she is wearing there, and a pair of matching panties, which she also has on that you canā€™t see. Thank you for ā€œmaking roomā€!

That Corolle doll looks like she might bite! She could even be in one of those ā€œmean girlsā€ movies!šŸ¤£. The outfit is cute and the hat simply adorable, especially on Janie! Now thatā€™s the kind of outfit that would work for the sandals in their original form, with the little ties on them, and matching the material of the romper! Then a cute little hat with a band of the same material around it. What a perfect little summer outfit that would be!

I have never seen a doll wig with a zig zag part, but then I donā€™t look at doll wigs very often, if at all. Itā€™s kind of cute, but yes, kind of difficult to ā€œfixā€. It looks like some little girl decided to give herself a haircut! I think you could possibly even it out as best as you can, and see how you like it, but the zig zag part is what makes it so different and cute!

I hope everyone is doing ok, with all the crazy weather! We are one big soggy mess here in St. Louis, after rain ALL DAY LONG yesterday, thanks to remnants of Beryl!

  3. Linda- the picture of Betsy was adorable and could not have been any better for the 4th of July. Betsy looks so happy amongst the decorations, too. Where did you find those fireworks?
The Corelle doll sure isnā€™t pretty. I donā€™t think she has much going for her.
What a cute outfit of TenPings. It sure didnā€™t have to wait long for a new owner.

Thank you, Paula! I got those fireworks at now closed Pier One, but I have seen similar ones at places like Hobby Lobby, and Michaelā€™s. They are several years old. Come to think of it, if you are somewhat handy, you could make your own with various sized toilet paper and wrapping paper cardboard. Add patriotic paper around them, a wire through the top and some silver fringe on the top.

  4. I love Linda’s Betsy McCall doll. She is such a sweet girl.
    This is a lovely arrangement
Do you remember getting the cut out doll each month in the McCalls magazine?
Mom always gave it to me because I was the only girl that loved dolls (my two older sisters were more studious, I just wanted to play all day)

Corolle girl looks a bit naughty! Keep an eye on her, Jeanne!
Janie’s wig needs a “sit and think” and the hat is just fine for now.
Happy Wednesday everyone. I am not 100% recovered but fortunately I have no commitments so I am resting today (sewing and purging stuff) I need to tidy the down stairs, my sister is coming on Friday for cell phone help from hubbs, so I have to make the house look a bit less horrible (I still have manyof my mom and dad’s things since dad’s passing last summer)
It is going to be another hottie in the far western portion of Northern Virginia

It is nice to see what a Corolle doll looks like. I had read that they smell like vanilla, but I don’t think I ever smelled one. Nice that her eyes can close.

It is good to see what a synthetic mohair wig looks like. Thank you for sharing, Jeanne. Is it soft? Janie is beautiful.

  6. Linda in St. Louis

Yes, Rosemary, I do remember those Betsy McCall paper dolls! Loved them and cut them out every month! I am the one out of 4 girls who really loved dolls and paper dolls! Still do!
Keep getting better, and take it easy!

  7. Still loving the 4th photos, never too late. I really didnā€™t zero in on the fireworks until Paula and Lindaā€™s comments. Great suggestions Linda!
About the wig . . . I think it was late 80ā€™s or 90ā€™s that zigzag hair parts were all the rage. Not quite so thickly though. Think early Jennifer Aniston. If you cut it, Iā€™d suggest blending some of it into the Farrah look. Remember her? No blunt cut for her. Janie just looks like her sister cut and styled it playing beauty shoppe!
    Have a good day all.

A lot of interest today, I love Betsy in the outfits you have, Linda. Mine just stays in her sailor dress, poor thing.

Jeanne, that doll you have may give good patterns, but I would lock her up at night. She looks like trouble, LOL! I love the hat even on that wig, it gives her such a cute country girl look.

Well, still working in the sewing room, I have a HUGE trash bag, a big Good Will bag and a large Thrift Shop bag for our church, so far. Have managed to get most of the stuff off the floor and onto cabinets. Going back up stairs now!

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Sissy! I also have her sailor dress, which is also cute and the right colors, but it has been so hot here, I thought the scissor dress would be a better dress to wear.

    2. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Sissy! Betsy hasnā€™t worn her scissor dress for awhile, so this was the perfect occasion!

I feel the need to stand up for the Corolle Les Cheries dolls. I have one and she is lovely. Her name is Chloe and I actually bought her from Jeanne a few years ago. They are also a lot of fun to sew for. Sadly Jeanne’s current Corolle has been mistreated. Their hair is normally beautiful and a lot like the Paola Reina dolls of which I have three, one articulated. They all smell like vanilla. They also all have wonderful hair that is permanent so if you don’t like messing with wigs these are the dolls for you.

Linda, I was totally debating whether to put my Betsy in the scissors dress for July 4th but ended up putting her in the cute little sailor dress. Both are perfect for the occasion. So glad you sent the picture and I love the props.

Jeanne, if you can find some way to improve the looks of your Corolle doll, I’m sure you would be able to find a good home for her. I’ve sewn for my Corolle using patterns from Les Cheries de Vaniline. The patterns I use are for the Little Darlings/Corolle Les Cheries/Natterer Minouche dolls and except for having to make the sleeves a little wider for the Minouche dolls they seem to fit all of them perfectly and they always look so cute and stylish. I know you usually create your own patterns but for those who don’t they might like the information should they have one of these dolls or buy your refurbished Corolle (since we all know you won’t be able to resist giving her a spa day).

I said we didn’t suffer much in the way of damage from Beryl but just noticed yesterday that all the blooms on the Crepe Myrtle trees here in town are gone. We had them in all colors and seeing them made the summer heat seem more bearable. I don’t know if they will come back because I really don’t know much about the blooming cycle for them. I just know that come late spring they bloom and lose their blooms when the heat dissipates. In between I don’t know if they lose and add on during that time. Anyone know?

    1. Sissy Lingle on the GA coast

Crepe Myrtles will bloom again if the old blooms are cut back to a growth node on the branch, but if the old blooms are left they won’t bloom again this year.

    2. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Barbara! I have both of those dresses, but the scissor dress won out because it was sleeveless.

  10. How sweet Betsy looks, Linda. The scissors fabric is really cute. Yes, I made some of those homemade firecrackers many, many years ago for a 4th of July party. Paper towel or toilet paper roll covered with colored paper, a vintage image on the front and sparkly pipe cleaner with a bit of tinsel on top.
Not fond of Corelle dolls and that one looks angry. Her outfit is cute though.
Wow, that wig is quite the sight. Zig zag parts came in late 90’s- early 2000’s.

Thank you, Laura! I too, think the Corolle doll looks angry, and I think it is mainly her eyebrows. If Jeann removed them and did them over, she would look better and more friendly, I think. Even adding. Some eyelashes would improve her eyes too. They seem a bit small.

  11. Joy in northern CA

Oh, I think Miss Betsy is adorable in her scissors dress and celebrating the 4th. Love the colors. So cute. Thanks for sharing Jeanne and Linda.
As to the wig, I understand that one can comb out the zig zags and then make a new part. That might be a first step. The back looks nice, I think, but not sure what to do with those choppy sides. Can’t wait to see what hairstylist Jeanne has in mind.
I think that the Corolle doll is cute. She’s saying “Save Me Please.” Maybe Jeanne can give her a shampoo and style?
I like the romper as it reminds me of those we wore in the 50’s. Maybe without the pleats it could be gathered across the front instead?
I love the hat as it is. I wonder if it is possible to make a pattern without taking it apart?
I sure wish I had seen the Ten Ping outfit, as I would have bought it. šŸ™‚
Well, Paris, St. Louis, for Linda, and Lake Tahoe, are all going to have a high of 87 today. Here, we’re looking at 94. šŸ™‚
    Keep cool everyone.

    1. Linda in St. Louis

Thank you, Joy! Oh my, St. Louis, Paris and Lake Tahoe, all with the same weather today! Ooh la,La!
