More beaded and fancy purses… no dolly purses here!!!

Hi everyone,
I can’t believe it’s Friday and I still don’t have this doll dress set listed on Ebay! What’s wrong with me?

I spent my morning on a call with Ebay for something my hubby bought on Ebay back at the beginning of April. It was his first transaction and he did it from his phone. It has never arrived, so I had to try and figure it all out. It wasn’t simple because it wasn’t my account. He didn’t know his seller name, he just bought it and was assigned a temporary “guest” name he could change later. It was up to me to figure it all out. I was put in touch with a wonderful girl who helped me cancel the order and get a refund! Yay Jeanne!

Then I was helping my hubby with some paperwork and then bills.

I had my afternoon and evening all planned out when there was a knock at the door. It was my neighbor (who brings me those bouquets of lilacs!) asking if we’d like to come over for her daughter’s college graduation party. We were over there till 9:00 and by the time I got back home, I had run out of steam for anything new and it was too dark for taking pictures of Violette. I did run home to get Violette and show Rebecca and her twin sister. They were in awe of how she was dressed and just loved her! I have to admit, I think I was beaming just a little bit… thinking back to when I was first starting this dress and in the middle wondering if I could ever get it the way I saw it in my mind. Hopefully I did!

I was thankful a couple of you sent in pictures… of something we have been discussing… purses! Vintage purses and the kind you don’t see today.

First up are Susette’s purses… and this is what she had to say about them…

Here are some I’ve carried over the decades. This is metal and has the Whiting & Davis label. (like the little metal one I showed)

Bottom left was my mother’s with the change purse, bought at a Base Exchange in England in 1956, as was my rhinestone one next to it for the prom in 1958. The little tapestry bag at the top was bought on eBay.

The black beaded one has a ticket to the LA Opera “Turandot” dated 2002 in it. Nice memory!

This next one from Susette is really lovely! She said she used it when she went to the opera!

(from Susette) I think I’ve shared this with you before but here goes. Ruth Maxwell, a neighbor down the street when we lived in Ferguson, Missouri, loaned me this complete outfit that was given to her by her aunt to wear for Halloween in 1956 when I was 15 years old. It included everything you see: The dress was red satin. Check out the length. The beaded purse. The gloves, bracelet and necklace. Even the shoes, cloche hat and feather boa. I rolled paper to make a cigarette! I wouldn’t have dared to carry a real one. Wasn’t that a wonderful thing for her to do. I did find a boa in a department store in Hawaii, of all places, years later and did carry it a couple of times. I didn’t have this picture until I was over 60 when my sister gave it to me from my parent’s collection.

Thank you Susette! It was wonderful to see your collection of fancy purses. A girl can NEVER had too many purses!

I also received an email from Linda… showing us a purse like hers!

Jeanne, here is the purse I mentioned in the blog today. It was given to me by my aunt when I was 9, who was a very fashionable young lady, and she used this when she went out dancing. It was from the late 30’s, maybe early 40’s. It stayed just like this, shiny and gold, although the lining got separated from the metal part, but I fixed that, and gave it to my granddaughter when she turned 18 last year.

This is an EBay listing, but this is exactly the same purse.
Love you,
Linda💕

Speaking of 1920’s Flapper dress sets, I received an email from Dorothy L with this auction on Ebay…Look at that, another one! :o)

American Girl Flapper outfit

Well, I will do my best over the weekend to get this outfit wrapped up. It’s Graduation weekend here, so lots of things are going on. Hope you have a wonderful weekend! I’m planning to!

See you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

What a fun post today, Jeanne! See what you strated with your darling flapper outfit? We certainly do find things to talk about and remeber from the past!

My goodness, Susette, you should have been born in the 20’s and you would have a ball with all the fancy outfits of that time! That last black and gold beaded purse is just my style! Your purses are beautiful, and I would do something to have them displayed somehow. They sure don’t belong hidden in a drawer!!

Imagine how much talent it took to both make and design them, not to mention finding a dress to go with them, and then a fancy place to go to! You looked very grown up at 15, especially with that “cigarette”! Ha ha!

I actually have that American Girl Flapper costume, and my Ruthie wears it for Halloween on occasion. I can’t believe the price for it now, especially when I recall paying somthing like $25.00 for it 10 years ago!

Oh my gosh! I really do know how to spell! I should had written “started” and “remember”! Too early in in the morning I guess!

You certainly did have a busy day, Jeanne, and you got a lot done–just not necessarily what you Wanted to get done!!

Susette, your little purses are just lovely. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but at the moment, I’m rather tending towards the balck on (although that can change!). You had a wonderful opportunity to be borrow and wear that lovely ensemble. Lucky you!!

Linda that purse is lovely I really like how fluid that metal mesh is. What a treasure you have!

Dorothy L., thanks for sharing that link; I well remember the days when they had child costumes to match the AG doll’s outfit! In fact, in the early days I think they had ALL the costumes made in girls’ sizes for their matching outfits!! The one shown here was, as I recall, one of the Halloween outfits

Glad Jeanne was able to get George’s Ebay purchase cancelled. Can’t believe she actually was able to talk to a real person to get help.
How fun Violette was able to be the belle of the graduation party. I’m sure she enjoyed it.
What a great display of vintage purse photos from Susette and Linda. I remember having several purses that I wore to dances in high school in the 60’s. I wonder what happened to them? Maybe they went to my cousin. Don’t know. Love the photo of Susette with her special cigarette. That one should be blown up and displayed. So fun.
    Have a nice weekend everyone.

Thanks Susette and Linda for sharing your wonderful purse pictures. And I love the flapper picture. Very pretty. Being the oldest of four girls everything I owned got handed down and I have no clue what became of any of it.

How good that you solved George’s problem, Jeanne. It is surprising that you could speak with a real person. Very unusual these days.

I’m sure Violette is over the moon having been the center of attention at the party. And most likely you too Jeanne. This outfit turned out cuter than cute and it’s perfect for Violette.

Dear Jeanne, you always have such a kind heart. I am sure that your neighbor was happy that you said yes and went to the party.

The purses the Sofa Sisters shared are lovely. Susette looks adorable in her “grown up” outfit.

Violette’s outfit will get listed soon enough. In the meantime, I am sure she is enjoying prancing around in it as she is such a little cutie.
