I hope you have enjoyed the dolls and “sofa’s” we have seen recently. I sure have… and if anyone has more dolls on your sofa you’d like to share, send them to me, and I’ll just save them for a day when I can use them. :o)
Now, before I show you my dolls, my sister, Cindy sent me a few more pictures of her dolls… and I had to show them.
I used Google Lens and found out her German doll and my Swiss Miss doll is made by Zwilling-Fox and they are celluloid. At least their faces are… their legs and arms feel like plastic to me… ???
Here are a few more pictures of Cindy’s German doll.
Here are 2 more dolls that she still has but didn’t show.
She said they’ve just been stored in her Madame Alexander box.
Mine were too, but mine didn’t fare as well as hers did… the MA box still has the price tag on it… $4.75!
Now for my dolls… I sold my Barbies, Ken, Skipper, Scooter, and Midge a few years ago… kind of sorry I did now, but I’m okay and hope wherever they are, they are bringing as much joy to someone as they did me.
So these are my dolls on my sofa… (besides the dolls in my sewing room that I sew for on a regular basis!) Well, I used to sew for them, but I’ll get back to it really soon, I hope. I went without the brace on my hand yesterday and today and my hand feels better with it off. It’s like it was keeping me from using the muscles in my hand… so we’ll see.
Starting on the left is a doll I had no idea who she was until TODAY! I used Google Lens and took a picture of her and it told me she was a Zwilling-Fox Trachten Puppen German doll.
Here is the website I got the information from. This is my exact same doll, except I don’t remember having that blue shawl and the flowers in the front on my doll, but they may have been there…
Mine isn’t nearly as pretty as Cindy’s doll is… I kept mine in a box too, but she’s not mint like Cindy’s is. Her pantalettes are glued on, but I did unsnap the back of her dress (for the first time today) and saw this marking…
The number is 22 1/2 but I have no idea what the top marking is…or means. It was easy not to lose her shoes and socks (AS THEY WERE PAINTED ON!) :o)
The bigger doll next to her is the one I got when we were in Venice, Italy. My doll was dressed in a beautiful pink lacy dress and Cindy and I used to spread their dresses out and set them on our bed when we made it. One day we came home from someplace, and our cat had gotten up on the bed (AND DECIDED TO DO HIS BUSINESS RIGHT BETWEEN HER SPREAD LEGS WITH HER SKIRT ALL SPREAD OUT!) I do remember crying and throwing her dress away. It was ruined forever! She has a mohair wig and very pretty blue eyes, but she, too, has seen better days. She has been residing in my cedar chest too.
Next to her is my Madame Alexander, McGuffey Ana doll. She is still pretty, but her dress and pantalettes are a bit tired looking. I might try washing them and see if they brighten up a little bit. She wasn’t a doll I played with… she was a doll my mom wanted us to keep…
The same goes with my Hawaiian doll… she is such a little cutie, but she needs some TLC too. I might need to plan a spa day for them sometime.
Well, those are my dolls that I’ve had tucked away… I might leave them out and look at them from time to time.
I’ll see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
I read all the comments yesterday and learned some things about ID-ing dolls!!
I also enjoyed everyone’s recollections about their Tonette perms. The funny thing is, I don’t remember the paper dolls that came with them so much as the puzzle books! I would do ANYthing to get one of those puzzle books!! Mazes, dot-to-dots, word puzzles, etc. Loved them all. To this day I still love doing all kinds of pencil puzzles (except crosswords).
And, like Joy, I had a mother who thought short hair was cute on me. NOT!! Short, and permed to within an inch of its life! My hair was extremely pale blond when I was a child, and in one of my school pictures, my hair was so tightly permed, I look almost bald!!! When I was about 7th grade or so, I rebelled, and refused to even go to a beauty shop for a haircut and perm. Of course, I have a school picture that proves That, too!! 😂
Thanks for the additional pictures of Cindy’s dolls, and the ones of yours, too. The German dolls are both really lovely, but yes, hers is truly “minty-mint”, as we say. I loved seeing both of your Madame Alexander dolls; I never had any of those as a child (they were too expensive), but I have a fair number of them now.
I wonder if your Italian doll is made by Furga? That’s the company I know best from there, and they were (maybe still are?) prolific doll makers. But your poor dolly’s dress! What a story!!
Before I get going on dolls, don’t get me started on Tonette and beauty shop perms! Oh my goodness, the smell! My mother also though getting us short perms would keep our hair looking nice and neat, but I actualy looked like a poodle, and those HOT curlers from the beauty shop really burned! But I did love those paper dolls from Tonette!
Jeanne, now that we have gotten the makers of the dolls straightened out, hopefully, we can continue! I really know nothing about foreign dolls, although I have a couple of Polish wooden dolls, some Chinese dolls,…somewhere! My dolls I had as a child were dolls I played with, not the pretty ones you put on a shelf and admired! One that my sister and I each had was Sparkle Plenty, with bright yellow yarn hair (kind of hard to brush!), and she had some kind of “magic” skin, but my sister left hers outside in the sun, and she turned black! You will see evedence of that on Ebay!
Cindy’s dolls are so nicely kept, and those two little Madame Alexander dolls must be the Irish and Indian dolls. I have some MA dolls displayed that I never sent pictures of, but I am always flooding you with pictures, so they stay unseen!
Your dolls are certainly very sweet. The doll with the blonde braids looks like she is Heidi! I also remember those sound boxes inside the doll’s body that cried “Mama” when you rocked her back and forth.
I was just thinking to myself, so far, there have been no baby dolls shown, that I can remember, but mayve it is too early in the morning to think straight! I remember receiving a Madame Alexander “Newborn Baby ” doll that I played with, that was not a storybook doll. She looked like a real baby, not unlike the Reborn dolls, but had a cloth body, not as physically realistic!
Always having a cat, I can imagine a cat doing what it did to your doll dress! Poor dolly,….and you!
Linda, MA had several baby dolls; yours might have been “Pussycat”, who was made off and on for a number of years. I know that, when I was working in a doll shop in the late 1990s/early 2000s, they were still making her. I don’t recall the names of the other baby dolls that MA did, however.
So sad for Jeanne, that her kitty forgot to use the litter box. I’m kind of surprised that her mother didn’t try to salvage the dress though. Oh well, at least she still has the doll. And her two MA’s are sweet. Like Charlotte, I didn’t have those either because of the expense. I did have a friend that had a lot of them that were displayed in a glass case in her room. Kind of sad when you think about it. I’ve always thought that dolls should be played with. 🙂
Glad to hear that those home perms were not fun for others as well. Charlotte, Linda, and I could share photos of our short unnaturally curled hair and commersate.
Fog this morning, so it should be a good for yard work. That is if I can convince other person to help. 🙂
Hope everyone is enjoying September. Halloween is just around the corner. 🙂
Dear Joy, did I miss your most recent caper? I thought I read you had a doll coming. I don’t want to miss the latest installment of the doll spy game (laugh).
Dear Jeanne, thanks for sharing your dolls. Alexanders always come first for me as they were some of my favorite childhood dolls.
I hope some of the other Sofa Sisters will share what’s on their sofas. It is so much fun learning about the collections that other people have.
I am glad your hand is better. Please continue to take it easy, though.
I was sorry to hear about the catastrophic (with the emphasis on “cat”) demise of what must have been a lovely dolly dress. My mother had a cat who used one of her twin bedspreads for a litter box. Without thinking I cleaned up the mess and threw the bedspread in the washer. It came out clean with no evidence of the kitty leavings but… the bedspread had been bright colors and came out of the washer pastel shades. Unfortunately it no longer matched its twin.
I’m surprised you never created a new dress for your dolly. I’m sure she would like to have one of your creations, and maybe some pretty panties. Otherwise she’s still in pretty good shape. Your German doll does look like Heidi. I loved that story but the thing I remember most was her being sent to her grandfather’s house wearing all of her clothes. Can’t imagine how they all fit one on top of the other.
I love the MA dolls. I never had one but my sister had a beautiful MA ballerina doll. My mother always loved the MA dolls but they were beyond our budget so it was a real splurge for them to get my sister her doll but all she wanted for Christmas was a ballerina doll so they went for it. I had a ballerina doll with feet you could actually point but I have no idea who was the maker.
I got curious about what the Tonette paper dolls looked like. I remember them being small, but I really couldn’t remember the details so I looked them up. I discovered that I actually have some of the full size paper dolls they were created from.
Nice to see a close up of Cindy’s German doll. I recall seeing dolls like that somewhere with the Edelweiss pin at the throat. So sorry your kitty was naughty, but I also am surprised that your mother didn’t try to savage the dress. No different than a baby soiling a dress and needing it washed. The MA dolls are sweet. I see the Irish, Indian, and Hawaiian. i wonder who the little red checked dress girl is meant to be?
Thought y’all might enjoy this. I was looking on eBay trying to see if I could find the ballerina doll I had and who made it when I came across this listing “1950s tow dancing doll”. LOL
I always thought Madame Alexandra dolls were the cutest. And weren’t Terri Lee dolls the ones with all the clothes. I loved seeing pictures of all those clothes. Maybe if I’d managed to get one, I wouldn’t have needed so many AG’s now.
Congratulations on your healing hand. Amazing how important functioning hands are.
I so wanted a Terri Lee doll when I was four. Never got one. 🙁
Somehow I missed the other posts about dolls! The dolls on my couch would be a Madam Alexander 18” bride doll that I got when I was 5 and a couple small MA’s. A Barbie from 1962 in her striped swim suit and her red pony tail in very close to original (I loved my troll dolls more!). Lastly a Tiny Tears who had to go to the hospital to get a new head after my brother threw her down the stairs on Christmas Day in 1960 (can you tell I am still mad after all these years).
btw my Troll dolls are still in good condition after my daughter played with them for years, but she still won’t give them back!
I have dolls I want to show too! My family has just been so busy. I do want them to get shown though!
By the way, it has been SO cool and interesting seeing everyone else’s dolls.
I can’t wait to show you mine!
