I hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day today! We have been busy every day since Thursday, so I think we’re going to play catch up! My house needs it! My sewing room needs it!!
I guess you can tell from the title today I have switched gears… I was re-reading the comments from Saturday and saw Dorothy L’s comment about the cowgirl hat being a bit more like something Freida might wear in the Fall. I had a little check in my gut the first time I read her comment, but the second time, I knew I was not going to use the cowgirl hat for this outfit. You’ll see it in the Fall though! I felt relief the instant I decided that.
So what direction did I decide to go?
Summer… totally and all-in for Summer. That meant flip flops for her feet instead of boots and a headband, instead of that wool felt hat. I hadn’t made any flip flops for awhile, but I think I remembered what I was supposed to. Today’s post is all about them… I’m hoping to get the headband done tomorrow.
I stacked a brown piece of leather, a yellow piece and a white piece together for the soles for Freida’s new footwear. I just so happened to have an aqua ribbon with yellow polka dots on it, that I thought went nicely with the fabric. Then I used some yellow cord to go between her toes.
I think they are cute… let’s see what you think…
Doesn’t it look much more like something for Summer?
I will see if I can’t get this set finished…
Have a wonderful day,
Blessings, Jeanne
I’m sure Freida is delighted with her new flip-flops!! And relieved not to have to wear a wool felt hat while the weather is so warm!!
I have to say, when I saw just the flip-flops, I wondered at your choice of ribbon, but seeing them up close with the fabric, I do see that aqua color in the print, something I hadn’t noticed before. They are very cute, and will look nice with her white skirt, too, I’m sure. (Although hopefully she will change to regular shoes when she is square dancing, if she doesn’t want to get her toes stepped on!!)
We watched the National Memorial Day concert on PBS tonight, and they had a very nice tribute to the Vietnam War POWs–this year was the 50th anniversary of the release of them, and I remember watching as each one stepped off the plane and onto American soil after years in captivity. I cried!!
I was taking some classes at the time, and one of my classmates had a POW bracelet; we were all curious as to whether she heard “her” soldier’s name/saw him. Her response? “He was the first one off the plane!!” Such excitement!!
I remember the men coming home from Vietnam also and watched it on TV with several friends. It was a very emotional time. I had two cousins who had been over there, but they were already home safe and sound at the time. I also wore a POW/MIA bracelet for a man named Sandy Sanderlin. I still have the bracelet. I recently found a site on the internet where they have.listed all the men on those bracelets. I discovered my soldier had been a helicopter pilot who died when his helicopter crashed (not sure if it was shot down or not). For years I had been wondering about him. It’s a site where people who wore the bracelets could comment also.
I completely understand the turn of events in this outfit, Jeanne! It’s happened before that something you were working on, took a different path than what the original one was, but it’s all for the better!
Love the little flip flops! I think she would love to wear this outfit to sit under a big shade tree with a good book and a glass of lemonade! Just the things summer is made of!
By the way, Charlotte jogged my memory of the time when those former prisoners of was were reunited with their families 50 years ago. It turned out that one of them, Rocky Sickwell and his wife Jill, live just a mile away from me! He so very active in veteran causes here in St. Louis.
Wishing all of you ladies a Happy Memorial Day!
Sorry, what was I thinking? His name is Rocky Sickmann!
Charlotte, I too had a POW bracelet and watched as the men came off of the plane and reunite with their families. We’re heading to the rural cemetery today as the volunteer group is leading tours. Other person hasn’t been there in years.
I’ve always thought of Jeanne’s, flowered outfit as something perfect for summer days. A backyard bbq or picnic by the lake comes to mind as does the song Lazy, Hazy, Days of Summer. The thongs are adorable. 🙂
Now I’m really onboard with this outfit. I live in Texas but I’m a Yankee born and bred so I’ve never really gotten into the “Texan” thing. I did a lot of square dancing when I was young and loved it but that’s only part of the cultural thing here. The hats and cowboy boots are a big deal. Both of which I never had a hankering to indulge in.
This outfit just says summer to me. I wouldn’t mind having one like it myself. The flip-flops are just perfect and I can’t wait to see the headband.
I mentioned in a reply to Charlotte that I had worn a POW/MIA bracelet. Two of my cousins served in Vietnam. One has since passed away but the other is very active in Vietnam Veterans affairs. He had a chance a few years ago to return to Vietnam. He was totally amazed at the transformation from when he was there. It is a beautiful place and has a lot of tourism going on these days. Also a lot of our clothing is made there, and their economy is doing very well. He was glad for the opportunity to minimize some of his bad memories.
Waiting on the arrival of Sean and his bunch. They are bringing Babyback Ribs. David has already started the regular ribs. I’m lazy and get sides from our local, fabulous BBQ place. Their potato salad is the best and so are their baked beans. They also make a great cucumber salad and I think Sean would refuse to come if I didn’t include that. Jason and his girlfriend Stephanie will join us also so it should be a fun feast.
Dear Jeanne, the outfit is adorable with the flip flops as an addition. I did like the hat but I can see that it might have looked too “heavy” for the ensemble. Maybe a straw hat would be better, if you want a hat at all.
I hope you and the Sofa Sisters have a nice Memorial Day.
My mom’s cousin (first cousin once removed to me and also my Godfather) was a General and pilot in Vietnam. Two of my neighbors also served including the sweet man who also helps care for the neighborhood kitties.
Our old cemetery in town always has a program with speeches etc. Many graves date back to the Civil War. We’ve gone most years.
The flip flops (or thongs as we called them in grade school/ high school) are really cute and a hairband will be perfect. This is looking much more summery now. The cowboy hat will be cute for fall. Having a grandmother who grew up in Texas and great uncle (and two more through marriage) and great aunt who lived there I have fun memories of the boots and 10 gallon hats as some were farmers and rode horse. Happy Memorial Day! A few of my dolls know it as Decoration Day in their eras. 🙂
Forgot to say all the peonies are in full bloom, even my dark pink ones which usually bloom after Memorial Day are opening early this year.
We always called those between the toes sandals thongs too! Never heard them called flip flops until much more recently. 🙂
And congrats on your peonies. Always loved the ones my mother grew. 🙂
You are always thinking😉I would have never thought to change out the hat you worked so hard on but you are right ( and Dorothy) it will be fine for another outfit.
The flip flops look perfect with the two skirts and that darling top.
We did the cemetery flowers yesterday and although the overall cemetery looked greenish when you walked out on it …it was crunchy. We need rain so bad. Driest May on record…ever😲
