I was busy again today and I do have some things to show you… I was working in my dining room this morning and an episode of Bonanza came on that I had never seen… I didn’t see the whole episode, but it was about how Hoss got his name, and about his hat being so big… I got to thinking about the hat I had started, and looked for a different doggie hat, that I remembered Rebecca had brought me sometime last year. It was an actual cowgirl hat.. but it was a little bit bigger than the Fedora hat I was trying to make into a cowgirl hat…
Yep, you guessed it… I decided to try again… I knew a little more this time of what to expect, so it didn’t take me “quite” as long, but still some time… I did it over my kitchen sink on a carving board, so the water could run off easier. Again, I took a flat piece of wool felt and by adding warm soapy water to it, it looked like this after a while…
Looks like a cowgirl hat to me… how about you?
I’m going to do the edges of the hat a little bit different this time, so I basted around the turned up part and pulled it taut.
So far, so good…
I sewed the snaps on the back of the ruffled skirt, so that is done…
Then I decided maybe I could make a white eyelet skirt, since Joy has asked for it twice, I think… I don’t know exactly if I nailed what she had in her mind, but this is what was in mine… :o) It just has an elastic waist that is hidden under the blouse, (but you do have to keep the bottom snap unsnapped on the top.)
It looked like this when I was making it…
Then I made a little braided tie and threaded the Sunflower charm onto it… It can be worn several ways… on the skirt, dangling down just a bit, it could be run through the jean belt loops and tied in back, in her hair as a headband, or around her neck, as a choker…
The hat is still drying… it was sopping wet, so it will take some time to fully dry.
I will see you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Wow, that definitely looks more like a cowboy/girl hat to me!! At least this time you knew kind of what to do, and you also figured out a way to make it even better!!
I love the charm accessory and how versatile it is. Love the white eyelet skirt, too–I’d like to have one myself, in fact! (And I sew, so there’s really no excuse….LOL)
I think you could call this outfit “Sunflower Charmer” or something like that! 😉
Oh Jeanne, that hat is coming along just fine and now looks like a cowgirl hat! I also love that charm on a cord hanging around her waist, especially on the skirt that matches the blouse.
The white skirt looked more like a slip to me, and I wonder if it could be, but when you added the pendant to it, it looked more like a skirt. I just thought the contrast between the blouse and the white of the skirt was too much. Of course I am seeing this through the computer, so that makes a difference too. I think adding some color or something extra to the white skirt would help in that regard, which the pendant does.
I can’t believe how cute Frieda looks with those bangs hiding those eyebrows she has! They were a big turnoff for me, since what little girls have eyebrows that look like they have just visited a salon? She looks her age now!
I’m really loving the way the crop top turned out, and the matching skirt too. I hope Joy weighs in on the white skirt, if its what she had in mind. I pictured tiers like the printed skirt using wide gathered eyelet lace. The pendant belt definitely makes a difference, but I just get the feeling that it’s not finished or just a slip.
Had company all day so didn’t get to read your post till now. Amazed at hat #2 ..it is so much nicer. Will you stitch the edge of the brim? Good ole Hoss had a great hat too. This little Cowgirl has a real western collection coming together. Maybe you could take your shoe forms and make some felt boots on them?
Oh yes, I like that white skirt. Only thing I would like is a waistband instead of gathers. This skirt can go with so many things. Like a r/w/b top for the 4th and lots of other tops for summer. I would also like to see it with the beautiful flowered fabric top, but the top bottom addition turned under so that a sliver of belly shows. 🙂 The top addition piece seems too long to me. I love the new belt with the sunflower too. And the sunflower choker necklace really surprised me. I love it. It’s boldness is perfect. How about a pair of thong sandals with this beautiful skirt instead of cowboy boots? Maybe a white scarf tied in her hair? Perfect for a summer picnic. 🙂
Dear Jeanne, I love what you have done with the hat. Who knew that Bonanza could be inspirational (smile)? I think we played the theme song from the TV show in the marching band. I know we played the music from the Rifleman Suite.
