Well, let me just tell you, remember how many times you had to endure me making small tweaks with my leather doll shoes… and how many times I just HAD to try something new with them… then when I dabbled in making those doll wigs for Navi and Twinkle Bailey, from those cheap porcelain dolls I found at the Goodwill, you did the same… cheered me on and said, “Is there anything she can’t do?”
Let me just butt in on myself… please don’t tell me that about cowgirl hats! I LOVE learning new things and always have, but Cowgirl hats will NOT be something I will be pursuing in the future… It’s just not creative enough for me and letting the sopping wet felt dry for several days and then shaping and molding and fitting and stitching it… just is too time consuming… AND it’s not like there’s a run on Cowgirl hats, is there? Well, come to think of it, I did see on Facebook this afternoon, someone asking, “Does anyone know who makes Cowgirl hats for the Ruby Reds?” I kept my hands in my pockets! :o)
So let’s see what has been done on the Cowgirl hat since yesterday… not much! I did see 2 cowboy hats at yard sales this morning, but I bet they were quicker to make than mine has been.
We had too much going on but I did spend a little time on the hat.
I don’t think I ever showed you what the hat looked like that I was using to shape this felt one for Freida. It was a doggie hat for a costume, I’m guessing.
It looked like this on Freida…
I covered it with foil and wrapped the edges around and taped them.
Apparently, the foil trick really worked because it made an exact replica of the doggie one… including being uneven on the 2 different sides.
If you look at those hats side by side, the right side brims are wider than the left side… by 1/4″… see…both hats are the same 2″ wide!
But the left sides of both hats are 1 3/4″ wide…
I was ready to take my basting stitches out and get rid of that ruffled look, but I’ll have to wait and do it after I stiffen the hat a little bit onto the brim.
I did tie a piece of narrow leather around the crown of the hat… not sure if I’ll do anything else to it… buttons looked silly, no feathers, so I may just leave the cord and that’s it…
I was using Aleene’s Stiffner in the top of the hat, and have moved down to where it fits on her head. This should be dry sooner than if it was soaked with water… so maybe it will be finished when you see it next time!
I’m leaving it turned upside down like this so it will tip up just a bit when it’s flipped back over.
I will see you Monday!
Have a great Memorial Day Weekend!
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh, for Pete’s sake!! Who would have thought to measure both sides of the brim before using that hat for a pattern?! I sure wouldn’t have. Well, as the saying goes, it is what it is.
I do like the leather thong tied around the hat. You might also do a little decorative stitching around the brim, sort of like on the second yard-sale hat you showed us, but it’s just fine as it is. And it seems to be fitting Freida better now, too.
I agree, this kind of “making” isn’t nearly as creative as tailoring or cobbling!!
Jeanne, don’t feel bad about the cowgirl hat. You do wonderful jobs with other kinds of hats, you know! Yes, I agree, this is too time consuming and not as creative enough for your talents. So you are making this one, and that is enough to know that you don’t care to do it anymore. I think we are all fine with that!
I do like the leather band around the hat, which gives it more interest!
Dear Jeanne, even if you don’t make another cowgirl hat, you will have made this one. That is still an accomplishment. We non-crafters stand in awe of folks who can make things. We are rooting for you as you finish this hat.
Happy Memorial Day to you and the Sofa Sisters!
The hat is coming along but I think it’ll go better as a fall accessory with a tweed long blazer or skirt. However the western outfit is so cute, and I don’t love sunflowers, except for feeding the birds. Kudos for trying something new.
Have a happy Holiday all.
How fun to find more hats at a sale. Interesting about the hat measurements too. Maybe dogs have crooked heads? I do like the leather band, but maybe the hat should go with a different outfit? I guess I’d like something summery with the lovely flower fabric.
Went to Joann’s yesterday and of course, came away with some fun fabrics. 🙂 Also had to stop by Dollar Tree to pick up flowers and while there found the cutest little r/w/b buckets for the dollies. They are smaller than the usual table treat type, so fit the Ruby Reds just fine. I plan to use them for some kind of a 4th party scene. We’ll see. They also had those blow up drink holders that make great dolly pool floaters. They had a cute seahorse and the usual flamingo.
Have fun this weekend everyone. 🙂
Hi Joy, your Dollar Tree finds sound really cute. I may have to check out those little buckets/ drink holders myself just to see what you mean. I hope you share your scene whenever you get it together.
The floating drink holders are supposed to be used by an adult while in a pool, but depending on what you want, they can hold a doll like you would sit in an innertube or, you can actually cut out the center bottom so a dolls legs will fit through. Just for show around a fake pool, but they are pretty cute. Just Google floating drink holder and lots will pop up, but Dollar Tree has the best price I think. 🙂
I’ll bet the interest in cowboy/ cowgirl hats is from Emma and those other boy and girl RRFF from before. I wouldn’t find this type of craft fun either. A different type of doll hat, yes, but cowboy style, no. The rest of the outfit is super cute.
