Anyone for a hayride?

Thanks for liking my “lipstick face” yesterday! It’s a nice memory for us… too bad Deb came along a little bit too late to be in the picture! :o(

Thank you to Laura, too, for your sweet kitty pictures. I always loved having a kitty in our house, but *alas* now we have Reuben! :o)

DON’T FORGET: If you have a funny story about sewing, cooking or crafting, or maybe something else that would make us chuckle… please send it to me today, in an email… I’m putting together a “funny post” for Wednesday! Yes, that’s tomorrow!

I didn’t want Joy to have to wait a whole year to show her picture of Nunnu in the closet… so here she is… this is what Joy said…

“I forgot to send this which is probably a good thing. I took this in the closet and couldn’t even see to frame it. And it is hard to see the light from the 1983 baby food jar. Nunnu hates spiders, but was ok as long as one was in the light jar, but not so much when others arrived for the rescue. Ugh! I really had a hard time even touching the spiders. Too scary. 🙂
Joy”

Okay, I have some pictures from the Hayride we had Saturday night… It’s an outreach to the International (and non-International) students at the University… Many of them had never been on a hayride or tasted some of our “American Hayride” food…

We had a few “stations” set up with various treats for everyone to try. We had a table where they could make S’mores! One that made little apple pies; we had popcorn balls, chunky applesauce (YUMMY!) served over vanilla ice cream if they liked. Then we had the station my hubby and I were in charge of… the Caramel Apples. We used Granny Smith apples, cut into quarters, stuck on a skewer, dipped in the hot caramel, then I gave them the stick and they could roll it in chopped peanuts, sprinkles or mini chocolate chips. I had a package of 100 skewers and ended up with 3 left… so I think they liked them. One little girl came back 5 times… Here is my hubby working hard… He cut the apples and quartered them…

See those blue gloves he has on? Sunday morning he was getting ready for church and discovered his wedding ring was missing… He looked in the car, but decided he had probably pulled it off when he took the gloves off. He decided to go look through the trash and find his blue gloves and hoped his wedding ring would be in them… but… it wasn’t. Boo Hoo… It’s lost, but we are still hoping it will turn up… but in all the leaves it could be anywhere…

I met Asir, from Bangladesh… this was his first taste of caramel apples… (As I was taking his picture, I saw the caramel on his apple dripping off…it was HOT!) He loved it and came back again for seconds. Then he got his wife and a friend to try them…

The station beside us was the popcorn balls… they were already made and could just be picked up…

The chunky applesauce was made in a big copper kettle and took all afternoon to cook down. It was very good… but took a LOT of stirring…

This was my bowl of it… over some ice cream…

I think these girls were from Japan and they wanted a turn at stirring the applesauce…Someone sent me these pictures and I couldn’t make them any bigger.

We had LOTS of different kinds of chili’s in crock pots, and hot dogs and baked potatoes with all the fixin’s. Then there was other things people had brought. Guess what I brought… Corn Casserole! :o)

Before we ate, they were playing games in a big field out front… gunny sack races, horse shoes, tug-o-war, and a few other things…

There was a tractor pulling a wagon filled with hay and LOTS of students going for their very first hayride!

We think there were around 180 people there… we lost count after 160. Here was a group shot early on in the evening…

We were praying for rain desperately, as it was too dry to have our big bonfire unless the ground was wet…and YAY, it did rain enough the day before so we could have the fire. It’s always a HUGE bonfire and this one was especially big!

Then while some are going on the hayride, we usually have a dance in the barn… a little bit square dancing, some line dancing, and a few other kinds of dancing, and a WHOLE LOT OF LAUGHING. You have to remember, some of these students can barely speak English or are going through the “English as a Second Language” courses. So they just watched what they were supposed to do and somehow it worked out. It is so much fun to watch they skipping around and doing a little doe-see-doe.. and a little Ye-haw! I took a short video of them on one of the dances…

Well, that was our 2022 Hayride! I think everyone had a good time! AND it didn’t rain… until we were cleaning up everything… it was sprinkling, but the rain held off so we could enjoy another fun hayride!

Don’t forget your funny stories for tomorrow…
I’ll see you then,
Blessings, Jeanne

Joy, your little Nunnu is as cute as can be! She does look a little scared, though; I hope she got a treat for posing so nicely for you!

Jeanne, your hayride and all just looks like so much fun! And delicious things to eat, too…I’m so sorry George lost his wedding ring, though! I wonder if a metal detector would find it? Or could it be in the bottom of the trash can somewhere? Oh, I don’t think I’d want to go thru all That, but you might have to, in order to find it. I’ll say a prayer that it will be found quickly and easily!

We only had three trick-or-treaters tonight. One was a little girl with her aunt Jeni, who is raising her (Jeni and her late sister Mandy, who was also the mom, were sisters to one of our son’s classmates from elementary school, and always brought their kids over to our house to say hi on Halloween. It took me until later tonight to remember who she (Jeni) was, but I did a little research and figured it out. I will write their names down on my Trick-or-treat list, so next year I can greet them by name! The other two were brother and sister, from our neighborhood, I’m sure, but I really don’t know them. When you don’t have young children living at home any more, you don’t often know many of the neighbor children, either!

Thanks Charlotte. I think Nunnu was just glad to escape the dark closet in one piece. 🙂

How scary for little Nunnu, Joy! I guess today the spiders have gone their own merry way and Nunnu is in a safer environment!

Oh, gee, George losing his wedding ring, after all these years! I hope and pray he finds it! Michael had to give up wearing a ring, because his fingers were too swollen while helping a contractor do building, so he can’t wear it anymore. We are still married though, 56 years almost!

That hayride evening looked like so much fun for everyone! Good food good games, a gigantic bonfire, and square dancing too! That square dancing video was so fun to watch, since I used to square dance in jr. and high school too! And the rain came when you needed it, and held off when you didn’t ! Perfect evening!

I think Nunnu about had a heart attack with those spiders. I was ready to put on my ski gloves, lurking in the closet, before I touched one. So creepy. Nunnu is back in her little carry box awaiting a much nicer outfit. 🙂

Looks like a good time was had by all! Traditional treats prepared in the traditional way and a good old fashioned bonfire, what fun! Our neighborhood in Tennessee organized a bonfire every October 31. We missed that this year. Our new neighborhood is mostly retirees so this was the first Halloween without a single princess or goblin at the door. We have some candy to ear or giveaway!

Have no idea why, but the blog this morning when opened was huge. When I hit comments it went to another page about logging in etc. So, I used Google and got the blog that way and all is well. Am I the only one with the problem?
Anyway, delightful hayride. I loved the great signs with the food in pictures to make those attending with limited English know the food types.
So sorry George’s ring went missing. I’d be out in that field with a metal detector pronto because they work so well. My uncle lost a ring at the cemetery once. Borrowed our old detector, replaced the battery compartment that was corroded with a new one, went back to the cemetery and within 10 minutes, found the ring buried in the grass. It works. I would try it.
That bonfire was tremendous, but really scary. Outlawed here. Glad you had some rain to make it safe.
We had two trick or treaters! Not like the old days. Most go to the flatlands in a neighborhood of Victorian homes where they have music etc. No problem with leftover candy as it will somehow disappear here. 🙂 So glad I’m not a teacher today. Those kiddos will be wild. 🙂
Guess what? It’s raining! Now, if we can only have more rain we will be dancing!
Thanks for sharing Nunnu. I about went nuts making her witch costume. Tiny sewing is not my forte. 🙂

Dear Joy, I am with Nunnu. I think spiders are icky! Real ones and fake one.

Well, you will get to read my sewing saga tomorrow. I hope it makes you smile like your espionage stories make me smile.

Joy, when I clicked on the link, it took me to wordpress.com! So I emailed Jeanne, and then just went to her blog via her website and all was well.

  5. What a perfect picture for Halloween. Nunno sitting in the dark with a dim light, realizing there are spiders crawling all over the jar- her expression of holding her hands up to her face in surprise is perfect.
She sure was a brave little girl seeing those spiders!

Jeanne, the activities set up for all the students looked like so much fun! And the food looked scrumptious! I’d say that was a well- orchestrated fall get together. It looks like everyone had a great time. The square dancing looks like it was so much fun!
I sure hope George finds his ring. Hope he is able to use a metal detector. Since that happened last night, you’ll have to let us know if he found it! Sure hope so.

I’ll let Nunnu know that she was very brave. I’m sure she will smile now. 🙂

  6. I wasn’t aware you had had Kitties, Jeanne. As I’ve said, i love both and have had both. Rueben a sweetie, he’s just a bit strong-willed. LOL
Yes, the blog opened to the WordPress page from my email. i had to type into Google to get here.
Aww, poor little Nunnu. She’s so cute, Joy. Tell her she doesn’t need to be frightened of the spiders. They are just Charlotte (from Charlotte’s Web) and her spiderlings.
The hayride looks like so much fun. Our home school group had one each year and a nearby farm that had lots of different animals to pet. We always did a bonfire and lots of treats. I really miss that. The square-dancing looks like a blast. we had that at an end of the year prairie party.
I hope George finds his wedding ring. That’s a real shame it was lost. Agree with Joy and Paula that a metal detector is sure to find it if it’s right where you were with the caramel apples.

Good to know that it wasn’t a problem with my computer! Tks. I’ll remind Nunnu about Charlotte’s Web. Might calm her a bit. I could feel her little box shaking after she crawled back in, but she quickly went to sleep. 🙂

Dear Jeanne, oh my goodness, I hope that your husband finds his ring.

Thanks for sharing the hayride photos. I found, when I was still teaching, that International students love to participate in the American activities that they saw on TV or in the movies. Our students loved to go on field trips to museums and historic sites.

I think the same is true for Americans traveling to other places. We want to partake of the local traditions and activities.

Doesn’t it make the world grow closer when we get to know each other and learn about each others’ cultures?

    Happy November 1st!

  8. What a fun weekend for you and all the foreign students. I guess all those American traditions would be so much fun for them….and yummy!
I feel bad about George losing his ring. I did that too…and thought for sure it was in my glove( it wasn’t).. I did find it…it was in a bowl I was washing some old antique doll clothes in and it slipped into the water. Did he have his hands in anything ?
Nunnu looked darling but scary and what a clever way you take the picture! She is so sweet.

Hi, Jeanne. This is late because the greater portion of today was driving to see my shoulder surgeon for a problem that cropped up. Yucko. Anyway, fortunately it was a beautiful day for the drive, lots of snow up there though. Always grateful for an easy drive.
So, yesterday…I just hooted when I saw those delightful pictures of you three kids in your costumes. We had very good weather last night and about 160 kids. My husband always answers the door; he just eats this stuff up. Pretty cute watching him operate.
So sorry about the ring. Metal detectors are a good idea, and I hope it turns up.
The kitties of Laura’s were adorable yesterday, too.
Finally, I almost felt like I was at your hayride festival. Made me think of the old hay barn and how I loved, loved the smells of the hay, the animals, and the age of the barn. Unfortunately, it burned down when I was a teen. My cousin was smoking in the hay. He was all right, at least for awhile. He died pretty young. At any rate, that looked like one absolutely perfect event. Wow and wow! How I would have loved it.
