Our second and FAVORITE bathroom remodel!

HI everyone,
I had a relaxing day today… I was trying to find some curtains for the girls rooms and think I may have found some… I made some muffins, took a nap, and made BLT’s for dinner and watched a movie with my hubby!

It was nice taking a break from the “fixer upper” days we had just gone through. The carpet guys were supposed to finish up today, but one of them had to leave early and they called it quits for the day. Tomorrow my hubby is putting the doors back on, installing the second light in the bedroom and putting the outlet covers and light switches back on, just to mention a few loose ends.

This might not be the Dolly Slideshow you were hoping for… but…

I don’t think I have ever shared these… hope not… but when we bought OUR “fixer upper” house, we really had no idea what were in for… oh the joys of remodeling a REALLY crummy bathroom! (We had already remodeled the main bathroom but the master bathroom is the one I’m going to share with you today!) The lady who lived here had decoupaged pictures painted by Norman Rockwell and a few other pictures from The Saturday Evening Post magazine on the upper walls of the bathroom…she thought they were fabulous and even wanted us to save them “if” we ever remodeled the bathroom! HA! The walls were tiled in aqua plastic tiles “highlighted” with gold triangles… The bathroom sink looked like a bad science project… it looked like someone had poured a bottle of Elmer’s glue on a piece of wood and then sprinkled a thick layer of gold glitter on top of it. Yes, it was hideous! Really hideous! My hubby ripped the whole “vanity” out with his bare hands.

I must have made a picture collage from these three pictures and the only way for you to see them is to click the image below. Take a good look because it didn’t stay like that very long. If you click on the picture and use the control and + keys you can zoom around the picture and really see how awful it was. What were we thinking????

We took out the cast iron tub and put in a shower unit. The day we were working on the tub, my hubby was under the floor and in that hole for about half a day, doing the plumbing… it was crazy!

We changed a few walls around and even turned the doorway that went into the dining room to a linen closet on one side and a pantry on the other side in my dining room.

It was a disaster for a long time… I don’t even remember how long it took us, but it was grueling work…

Because of the way the roof was in the dining room, we had to have a portion of the bathroom ceiling dropped…we used bead board on it…

We put in a new bathroom window too…

I made a paper template of the whole bathroom floor and cut out the flooring in the living room IN ONE PIECE… I attribute that to my pattern making skills and the Lord’s favor!

I have more pictures than you could ever want to see, but that was it in a nutshell… distaster to delightful! Here is how it turned out!

Well, I hope you enjoyed that…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Oh Jeanne, I remember this from when you put some of these pictures on AGPT! I remember the pretty robin’s egg blue paint, and the white beadboard! Yes, it is quite a refreshing look from what it used to be! What an accomplishment for the two of you! Has the woman who originally had the house ever seen it lately? She would be stunned!

I did get the blog yesterday like so many others who had been having trouble. Did you change anything? Like Charlotte gets now, I used to get your blog twice, one at 1:00 a.m., and one at 5:00 a.m.. However at some point in time, the 1:00 blog never did come, so I cannot get it when I am up and I have to go to the last blog post so i can find the current one. When I tried to reapply for the earlier one, I got the message that I am already on the list, so I couldn’t get that early one. Since that time, I get the blog every once in awhile, about 4 times a week, so not everyday. I can’t figure out how to get the earlier one, so have to make do with what I can. Charlotte, which email address is the earlier one?

The WordPress one is earlier, Linda. And I got both yesterday! Perhaps the computer gremlins have been working overtime this past few weeks, with some not getting theirs at all, and others only getting one instead of two!

Well, wouldn’t you know, it is now past 6:00 and no blog from Jeanne today for me!πŸ₯²

My goodness, what a big change in that bathroom!! All those decoupaged pictures….(shudder…) Yeah, right, you were going to save them!! πŸ˜‚

My apron is almost done! I may get it finished in time to enter it, after all!! Stay tuned!

Jeanne, the room for the girls has really come to life so very well. The two of you are an incredibly talented, persistent, and creative remodel team. Congratulations. As for your master bedroom bath, and cutting out the flooring in one piece on the living room floor? Good heavens!

Charlotte, I can’t wait to see that apron!

Anne. I think those are the most stunningly remarkable quilts I have ever seen. I looked and looked for the heart, but no luck. It sure was a secret! The colors, the designs, the WORK! What labors of love and creativity. I am so glad you sent your pictures to Jeanne and that she posted them. Thank you both. (And I am glad you safely got your son warmed up from the hypothermia. So scary.)

    Happy Friday, everyone!

How fun to see your bath remodel. Great idea of adding a linen closet/pantry from the old door entryway. The color scheme of the original owner wasn’t all that bad, but that sink that belonged in an old gas station really needed to go. πŸ™‚ We in fact have the same old tub in our bathroom. The things are cast iron and very durable. Ours came with original black tile around the tub/shower, and the vanity was covered in pale yellow tile with black accents. Very stylish, but not my favorite all white style. We took a sledge to the vanity and put in a double sink and tiled over the tub/shower black with white subway tile. We are due for another remodel of which we will install floor plank large tile on the diagonal and a new vanity solid surface top, removing the white tile we put in after the black/yellow. πŸ™‚ Always something to remodel around here. Thanks for sharing that very interesting “before” bath. πŸ™‚
Without boring you with details, our mailman quietly delivered Petunia from France, yesterday, allowing me to spring first to the door to retrieve the mail from the box as I kicked the waiting box below out of the way towards the bench. Other person did not see it as I brought in the mail. πŸ™‚ After a long wait, I was able to gather the box into my clutches and tip-toe it inside to be deposited in that safe hiding place. πŸ™‚ Thought I would have some relaxing time ahead, but no, Francesca, has started on her journey here from China. I wonder when she will arrive? No exact date as of yet. I must work on my next caper. πŸ™‚

Dear Jeanne, it is amazing what you and your husband can do. The bathroom looks so pretty now.

I think you just came up with the perfect name for your TV show: Disaster To Delightful!

A reminder for you and the Sofa Sisters: The Virtual Doll Convention event will be August 26 to August 28. Registration begins on Monday, August 15. Here is a link to the website:

What a nightmare the original bath was and what a beautiful redo. I can’t believe the former owner thought the bathroom was the greatest and wanted you to keep the pictures. And the vanity “arrangement” was awful. The bathroom needed more than just a cosmetic redo and you and George did a wonderful job on remaking the whole thing.

We had another storm come through last evening. Thankfully we had returned from dinner before it hit us. Possibly might have another one this evening. We desperately need the rain. Maybe my Crepe Myrtles will be able to bloom now. I can’t afford to water them because they are trees, so i have to wait for Mother Nature. Unfortunately with the rain comes the humidity. Air you can wear is back.

  7. I am over whelmed by your ability to redo that bathroom, add walls,..virtually change everything. Your husband is so talented! What a gift. I love how you changed everything to make it YOURS❀️

Your work on the bathroom was amazing. You and George make a fantastic team. I’m glad you had a little time to relax after all your hard work on the church house.

Joy you are right about the coal being unhealthy. Christchurch was built on a swamp and the fog was really bad in the winters here. Open fires were banned around 2000, Closed coal burning stoves followed soon after and in 2005 wood burning stoves were also banned though there were one or two clean air ones that are still allowed. According to Google the govt is considering banning wood-burning stoves country wide but not sure that will be popular, particularly in the south where it gets pretty cold and heat pumps don’t work well in below -10C temps.

Darren, my second son, is supposed to be sending his electricians around to wire up the sleepouts. The power can’t be connected yet, that has to be done by the power company, but we can’t do anything (e.g. carpet, heat pumps, inside painting etc) until they have been lined and they can’t be lined till the wiring is done. We could get on with the painting outside if the weather would cooperate!

Oh well, plenty of sewing to be done.

I would love to see a photo of the sleep outs. Are they going to be connected to the house or separate entities? So I guess like two more bedrooms? Here, because of housing shortages, lots are adding units to their formerly single family sites which can be rented. Sometimes, they crane them right over the homes to fit them in the backyard. Is that what you had to do? Curiosity is attacking me. πŸ™‚

Forgot to add, wood burning fireplaces can no longer be built in new housing here. Wood burning is allowed, but most don’t and not at all on “spare the air” days. Those in rural areas of the county can burn wood anytime if that is their only source of heat. Many in the city limits have replaced their old wood burning fireplaces with gas or electric models. In high fire areas, like the sierra’s, no outdoor wood burning is allowed at all in homes such as firepits or charcoal burning barbecues. Propane or electric grills are okay. Campers can only have a small fire in a designated fire ring at a campground but only in certain areas. Some areas no fires at all. Extreme fire danger.
As to heat, in the sierra’s, many have propane tanks that supply gas to cabins, but they can still burn wood for heat there. Don’t know for how much longer though. It is so bad for the environment.
