My wild Wednesday…

I am having a hard time keeping up with my blog…and many other things right now. I thought Tuesday was a crazy day until Wednesday came along. It was 5 times worse…

We thought my signing up for Medicare was all finished, but no….it was all mixed up and what one lady on the phone told us turned out not to be true… so we had to start over…we were on the phone for hours…

Then there was a prescription mix up that was nothing short of insane. It took hours and trips into town 3 different times.

When I finally got home, we tried to work on the closet doors, and we “think” we figured out a way to make them work, but it had been too long of a day so we made dinner and said, “There’s always tomorrow.”

My hubby was helping me with the dishes and accidentally dropped a glass bowl that shattered into a huge mess. He said, “What a way to end the day!” :o)

BUT… somewhere in the midst of all this, Rebecca and I spent a little time in my sewing room and made her boutonnieres…while she looked at favor ideas and finger foods on her phone.

It is now one minute after midnight and I’m going to let one (or more) of my readers ask a question… and hopefully you will all chime in like you did for the school questions…I enjoyed reading your comments, while I was “waiting on the phone and in the drug store.”

See you tomorrow
Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you Lynn
I have a few minutes while I’m waiting on my hubby to cut a board for the closet..
I’m glad you like the boutonnieres…they are much brighter in real life…

Oh, my goodness, Jeanne, you Certainly didn’t need a day like that! As I recall, my signup for Medicare went pretty smoothly. Of course, that was a few years ago…

The boutonnieres are just lovely! Of course, I like the purple one best! LOL

Sally, I had forgotten about the cowboy lunchboxes. I don’t think we could afford them, though. I know we watched both the Roy Rogers show AND the Gene Autry one (and when I was 13, we got to meet Gene Autry!), but I don’t remember lunchboxes like that. It could be because we didn’t have a TV until I was 11, so things like that weren’t important. (Come to think of it, I think mom got our plain lunchboxes when I was in 1st grade and Paul was in kindergarten.)

I also wanted to let you all know, I saw my doctor today; she was concerned because of the various health issues I’ve had in the past couple of weeks (first the high fever, then the tummy issues) so did a lot of tests. Won’t know the blood results till tomorrow but the upshot is, I have another UTI. Back to antibiotics, and she wants to see me in two weeks. But at least no pneumonia and no covid!

Okay, a question….Since we were talking about school days yesterday, what were your favorite things to do during elementary-school recess?

We didn’t have a lot of playground equipment, so just swings, but we also loved to play hopscotch, jacks, and jump-rope. Simple games, but we sure had fun!

    1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Charlotte, I had a Hopalong Cassidy cowgirl suit! I used to love watching him on TV. My favorite show, though, was Rocky and Bullwinkle.

  2. Linda in St. Louis

What a day you had, Jeanne! I remember also when I signed up for Medicare, it was like you went to another planet! So confusing and you get so much disinformation for everywhere! You just don’t know where to start, although we had people come from the government agency to talk to groups in our subdivision about what to expect and what to do or not do. It was nice! And too, after my teaching stint, I worked for an insurance company in their Medicare division, so knew a lot just from doing that. You will get there, don’t worry!

I love the way the boutonnieres coordinate with Rebecca’s bouquet! Does George get one?

Let’s see, Charlotte, although my school was brand new when I started first grade, (in 1947!) we too only had swings, and maybe a jungle gym. Oh, maybe see saws too, but nothing like playgrounds they have now, so most of our recess activities were jump rope, hopscotch, and the like. I still remember all the jump rope jingles we sang as we jumped! When we got home, what did we do? Played jumprope! I was jumping all day it seems! Haven’t jumped rope in years and years, so I guess now where all this excess “baggage” comes from!!

We also had physical education, and that consisted mostly of playground acticities, since we had no indoor gym. We played games like Red Rover and Lemonade, neither of which I really liked. All the yelling and running around were not to my taste!! LOL I was NOT a tomboy!

So I will add a question, what did you do AFTER school, when you got home? As for me, it was jump rope,(again) or maybe paper dolls!

    1. Charlotte Trayer

I played paper dolls, too, Linda, and also with my regular dolls. If I was really lucky, my best friend got to come home with me after school–or I’d ride the bus to her house–and we would play or maybe have a sleepover if it was Friday.

Of course, we had some chores to do, too. And reading. I was ALWAYS reading. I still am!!

The sun will come out tomorrow, so you’ve got to hang on til tomorrow, come what may…..
For tomorrow, tomorrow I love you tomorrow you’re only a day away…. 🙂

Well, I’m sure you will figure out SS and get things going. It was very easy for us as we were signed up for Kaiser Senior Advantage for medical. But, definitely don’t need all of that rigmarole right now. Sorry it is happening for you. Can you make an in person appointment at your local SS office? Maybe that would help.

I can’t wait to see what you’ve figured out with the closet doors. I foresee them hanging proudly. 🙂

Love the boutonnieres. They would be perfect for dolly wedding bouquets too. Maybe make a few extras for a future dolly wedding venue? 🙂 So, what about mother of the bride and mother of the groom? We had wrist bouquets at the daughter wedding which were perfect. I popped mine on my bag. I personally don’t like to be decorated much. 🙂 Might be fun to see photos of mother of the bride/groom at their children’s weddings. For some reason, I guess I was supposed to pick a dress first and then the mother of the groom. Is that something that is done? But, working full time, and not one that would even consider wearing some of those dresses featured as for the mother of the bride, it took me awhile to find something that would work. Oh well, water under the bridge. Have you found a dress yet?

Not being a sport recess person, I guess we played the usual rope/jacks things. I think I held the rope a lot and did like doing the snake where you had to jump over that. 🙂

    On to tomorrow….

    1. Charlotte Trayer

Joy, my then-future mother-in-law was SO excited that I was going to marry her son, I don’t think she waited 48 hours before she had the fabric and pattern for her gown!! She chose a blue/lavender print, and her friend made her gown. And yes, she was Supposed to have let MY mother choose first, but my mom worked full time then, and it was a bit before she could go shopping. And…her favorite color was blue. No, her gown was white/yellow/gold/orange sort of engineered tree print (hard to explain). The colors surprised me, but I guess it was the one she liked best, or maybe she was trying for something totally different from Ada’s. It all worked out, though. And the “other mom” (our dear friend) chose a pale pink gown, so each mom was a little different, but it all worked.

  4. Kathie from Omaha

When we signed up for Social Security/ Medicarewe made an appt at their office and my son, who is a Financial Advisor, went along because he wanted to see what his customers went thru during the process. The SS fellow felt good about that and was awfully helpful.
School recess for our class was 4 square and my friend and I made it to square one every day…was so much fun!
Why you have to do all this SS and medicare this week is a real pain! Sorry it is soaking up so much of your time🥴. Wedding prep is way more fun. Cute boutonnières.

    1. Susette from Southern California

Good idea for your son to go along. I went with my mother to the required Social Services consultation at the hospital when my father was ill and was going to require long-term. The person told her to buy an expensive car and put their house in one of their children’s names in case they ran out of funds for his care so Medicare would cover it. Unbelievable! So I looked it up and even at that time there was a one year look back period to qualify for that. That period has now been extended to five years. Fortunately my parents never needed that. Even putting a house in trust only protects it if the trust has been in effect for five years. An aunt followed that advice from a lawyer and Medicare recovered the money spent for years of care when the house was finally sold. I do have a degree in finance but the Social Security website is available to anyone.

  5. Barbara in SE Texas

I love the boutonnieres. I agree they would make lovely dolly bouquets. As for Medicare, we are fortunate that I retired from Shell Oil and that is all taken out of my hands each year. They do a good job. I just have to let them know if we want any changes, which we usually don’t. We don’t need to worry about dental in our Medicare because we’re signed up for the dental plan we’ve had for years. It’s a good one so no complaints or reason to change anything.

During school recess we played tag, jump rope and hopscotch. After school activities depended on the time of year, but we always had to change our clothes first. Since we girls all wore dresses we were glad to do that. Having parents that went through the Depression they sometimes came up with fun things for us to do that didn’t require an investment. My best friend’s mother once handed my friend and I a few tissues. We tore them into strips. It was in the fall and there was a stiff breeze. We let them fly and then chased them down. It was actually a lot of fun and produced a whole lot of giggles. And several of the other kids in the neighborhood saw what we were doing and joined in.

So glad you may have come up with a solution for your closet doors. Really sorry for the difficult day you experienced. I’ve had a few of them myself where I really felt snake bit. Hopefully today will prove better for you.

    1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Barbara, you are so funny. I never heard the phrase: being “snake bit.” It certainly is descriptive though (laugh).

  6. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, oh my goodness. You have so much going on right now. I sure hope you will be able to take a break when thing settle down. I think that when Rebecca goes on her honeymoon you and your hubby might want to take an anniversary vacation somewhere. You definitely deserve it!

The boutonnieres are very pretty. I echo Barbara in SE TX; they would make lovely dolly items. Who knows, maybe later this year you may want to make a flower girl dress for a dolly who just happens to attend a wedding.

Here is my answer to Charlotte’s question. I cannot remember anything special about recess. I do remember that in 6th grade we got to have free time in class. During one of these periods, a classmate, John, taught me how to play chess. I still remember the basics but that’s it. I don’t know any of the gambits.

  7. Sally from Colorado

    Good morning all,

First, JEANNE, hang in there. Medicare is absolutely wonderful once the wheels get rolling, but those phone calls for anything dealing with medicine can just be killer annoying. Especially frustrating if the person on the other end of the line has shaky English. So sorry you had a crumby day, but you did get a little Rebecca/wedding time, and that had to have helped. Boutonnières look perfect. Of course!

Dear DOROTHY in PA, dear lady, I saw your last comment this morning from yesterday and made a reply.

Dear CHARLOTTE, I hope you get some helpful answers and sorry about that doggone UTI. Last December I was opened up twice for my total reverse shoulder replacement. I had blown everything out in that area when I fell last August in the kitchen and there wasn’t much to “fix” so it has been a long journey. I was put on daily antibiotic infusions for 6 weeks and have been on oral antibiotics since then. My last telehealth is tomorrow and my last pill, I hope like the dickens, is Saturday morning.
Last night walking home from our youngest son’s house, I was feeling great that all parts of my body were finally in sync when I tripped on the sidewalk and went down on my left side with the repaired shoulder, tore my pants and shirt. Once I got home and cleaned up my cuts, I fell on my bathroom floor, hitting the other side of my body so now I have a very sore rib cage on that back side. Nothing feels in sync today. Guess I could say I had a bad day yesterday. Waiting to hear from doc’s office to talk about falling and a bunch of other issues. So, my friend, wishing you only the best.

To your question…My first grade was in the town’s old one room schoolhouse that was heated by a wood stove. Only first grade was there in that building and it was the last year it was used for school before becoming the Legion house. We had a wonderful old seesaw out there with three boards and a swing set with three swings. My dear teacher was Mrs. Adams who had a really long drive every day. I was bossed to that school. When I went to the next school building, I rode my bike or walked. There were parallel bars, swings, jungle gym, and lots of jumping rope. After school, my brother and I, he was three years older, stoped by the little news shop/gas station next to the school and got a weekly $0.05 ice cream cone. When the new school was built in the neighboring town, I was bussed. For HS, I rode to school and back with my English teacher and his wife, the French teacher.

When we got home, we rode our bikes around at my great aunt’s house across the street because it was a large property with safe biking, or we played in the barn, helped with some farm chores, gathering sap, played ball games on the field beside our house, played croquet, and of course, played with dolls (and trucks.)

Happy day to you all, and for those of us with a tough yesterday, a much improved day today.

    Hugs
    Sally

    1. Kathie from Omaha

Oh Sally! So sorry you are feeling so sore after a couple falls…especially after feeling like you were over the hump! I never could figure out why people who were older fell so often but I can relate when your balance is off…glasses are not correct for distance…and other issues. Hope nothing serious shows up! ((HUGS))

      1. Sally from Colorado

        Dear Kathie,
Thank you so much for your compassionate thoughts. I never thought this would happen this early in the game but it has. I bought a bike from a friend last year and loved the feeling of riding again, but I fell off that bike twice hitting my head hard on the cement ( with a helmet, thank goodness! ) So the bike is sitting in the garage.
Again, my most sincere thanks. Have a great day, dear Kathie! 🥰

    2. Joy in northern CA

Definitely hope today is going much better for you although, sometimes the next day after a fall, the bruises and strained muscles show up more. Hopefully, you will be up and running soon.
      Take care.

      1. Sally from Colorado

Hi, Joy. You are right on the money; stiff and sore almost everywhere. “This, too, will pass”. Thanks! Hope you’re having a good day.
I do have a bright spot for tonight…but my hubby intercepted mail delivery this morning and the doll box I was expecting tomorrow was here today. He set it right on the dining table. Well, that was blunt stick in the eye! 😣

    3. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Sally, I will go back and read your comment from yesterday after I finish this note.

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry to hear of your falling. I know there is some kind of yoga program for seniors that is supposed to help with balance. I need to learn more about that. Please do take care.

      1. Sally from Colorado

        Hi, Dorothy,
Thank you. Yoga IS supposed to help with balance. I have been doing private classes since Covid started and will continue as both she and my Pilates instructor tailor their classes to my needs and issues. I think it’s time for a fairy godmother to appear. Aren’t we all supposed to have one?
        Sending a hug. 😊

        1. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Sally, yes, I agree, we should all have fairy godmothers.

And Dorothys like to have a Glenda, Good Witch of the North. One cannot have too much protection.

It’s good to smile. Sometimes I watch the World’s Funniest Videos and laugh out loud. My doll children look at me strangely but I think it’s because they don’t appreciate the humor.

    4. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Sally, okay, now I have read your comment from yesterday. Duh on me, I should have read it before so I would only have to leave one message.

Yes, you will be the Chief Enabler and Cheerleader.

We need a Director of Tourism. Of course we will have to have a Director of the Department of Film because Hollywood will want to use our location for movies.

We will need a Director of Parks and Recreation. We will have flat walking trails though, no hills.

We will need a restaurant for those of us who do not cook to visit.

And we definitely will have a tearoom. We can call it The Sofa Sisters Tea House.

Hmmm, what else do we need in Dollville?

      1. Sally from Colorado

Oh, Dorothy, you are so in the spirit of Dollville. You did say we should appoint Charlotte the Superintendent of Crafts. I agree.
You have thought of some VERY important positions. Maybe another sister might want to volunteer? Add to the list?
As for Parks and Recreation, yes to flat, even walkways/sidewalks. I think we should have a therapy pool, too. And it won’t matter ONE bit what anyone looks like in their suits. And bad hair days will be allowed for all doll mommies but not the dollies. THEY have standards that should be obeyed!
Thanks for the smiles. At least it doesn’t hurt to smile today. 🎈🎈
        Giant hug,
        Sally

    5. Charlotte Trayer

      Dear Sally,
I am so sorry about your falls! They are no fun whatsoever.

If you haven’t already done so, do ask your doctor for some PT specifically for balance. I have gone thru some, and even though I am not very faithful about doing all the exercises, it actually has helped!! It’s helped strengthen my core and also has made me more aware of where I place my feet when I walk. Also, I always carry a cane, just in case.

      Take care!

  8. Dear Charlotte and Sally,
So sorry to hear about your latest health issues. i pray you’re both feeling better very soon.

Beautiful boutonnieres, Jeanne. They will look so nice with Rebecca’s bouquet.

At school recess we played hopscotch, jump rope, and Chinese jump rope. There was also a merry-go-round https://i.pinimg.com/564x/9c/1a/60/9c1a6055f0a2e5084a814ff102e45612.jpg
swings, and monkey bars. I loved swinging on swings, still do!
We also played “pioneers – LHOTP. There was a stand of buckeye trees in a circle on the bottom playground that we used for a cabin. We would gather buckeyes, acorns etc. for our pretend food. We would fish pieces of slate out of the creek and play school with the ends of chalk we were allowed to take from the classroom. The creek had a wooden bridge across it into the woods, so it was a perfect scene.

    1. Sally from Colorado

Laura, what special memories. Sounds like a LOT of fun and I sure enjoyed your comments. Thank you for your concern. I deeply appreciate it. Have a super day, dear Laura.

  9. Marilyn from Colorado

Wild does seem to be the kindest thing you could say about your yesterday. In spite of that, you made progress. Don’t forget to try the boutonnieres on a suit so you can be sure they aren’t too heavy and will go on neatly. My mother commented that by the second wedding, she knew how to manage one. The first was lovely but she never had the courage to add up the total expenses.

Medicare — my sister took care of that for me while I was doing parent care. On the other hand, I went to the Medicare office to take care of some issues for the estate of a friend. There was a police officer posted there full time, and after an hour or two, I could see why. I think is unfair to murder the person who is trying to follow the rules, you need to murder the person who produced the rules. However, they are unavailable, and so…the police officer.

Once you have Medicare, you can see that the bother was worth it.

Games. I never did like those (I have very little depth perception so I don’t have any idea where a ball is in relation to me — something I didn’t know about until I was an adult). I could have done quite well without recess. After school, or any available time, I read. Though in 2nd grade, we brought trading cards and traded them at recess. That was fun.
