A few ways to store your doll’s accessories…

Thank you for all your sweet wishes to Rebecca and her beau! She met him toward the end of 2019 but they just did all their talking online until March of this year when she took a trip to PA to see him… then he came here, and then she went back there for 2 weeks in July. I thought maybe I’d answer a few of your questions from yesterday’s post… I never made it to the comments until after 10:00 p.m.

Linda, Rebecca has ordered a dress and it was supposed to come today but it didn’t show up… guess maybe tomorrow…

When she gets married, I’ll show you a picture of her in it…

Yes, my sister, Cindy, lives in PA too… three hours from where Rebecca will be living… lucky duck! :o)

I do plan on adding some color to my new bedroom… and I have to say, when I woke up this morning, I looked up at that new white ceiling and I think I smiled right there in bed! It was wonderful and the walls looked SO different… I loved them…

Carole, I hope I can used to the idea of Rebecca being gone… I can’t imagine what that’s going to be like, but I guess it’s going to happen, whether I like it or not… I guess all our babies must sometime leave the nest…

Thanks Susette, for that well spoken word that she isn’t THAT far away… 10 hours… If she were moving to Seattle or California or Thailand or Japan, I think I might croak! But this is doable… Reuben is going to miss watching for her to come through the door when she gets off work… We do have a TJ Maxx and a Home Goods store and yes, I know about the fantastic savings you can find there… so I will be looking and I’ve already been looking online for ideas… AND congratulations on getting Alice… She is a beautiful doll and you will love her I’m sure…

Joy, the bedroom will most likely have to take a back seat to things happening right now, but I do plan to get it all fixed the way I want… ONE OF THESE DAYS… So you are a small wedding gal too… you and Rebecca would probably get along just fine…she is all about no fuss no muss! We’ll see… :o) I thought maybe she might pick the yard, but she wanted something more scenic… we’ll decide on something next week… She is going to be working along side her hubby for now… Jeanne: Wedding Planner… NOT! Jeanne… Helper… Yes! :o)

Dorothy, I wish I could find some sheer white fabric with just a hint of the print like the tan I have now. I love how the curtains I made for there hang… so wispy and flowing… but I’ll have to wait on that and see what I can come up with… I did see the new Alice doll by Ruby Red Fashion Friends. She is a real cutie and I bet she is very popular…

Dorothy in PA… yes, I’ll have two “sisters” and one daughter in PA now… if I get that way, I hope we can meet… I’ll have to find out what part of the state you live in… I bet you’ve told me, but I have forgotten… unless it’s Harrisburg…that seems familiar. I’m working on something for this Mom of the Bride…

Laura, Rebecca and her new hubby will be 3 hours away from Cindy… that will be nice to have family that close… and when Cindy comes home she could pass by Rebecca’s place easily… She had an idea of a dress she wanted and ordered it. It will probably come tomorrow…
I liked your pun about the “rabbit hole” when you were talking about the new Alice RRFF doll. Pretty clever you are! :o)

Thanks for your kind words Elaine! I will let you know more details when we find out things… and maybe she’ll let me share a few pictures of her special day. They aren’t even married yet and they seem to have a great relationship… All they do it talk about anything and everything… it’s fun to see young love! My daughter is very frugal but also very creative and can come up with things that will work just as well without being expensive…

Kathie, she had a dress in mind and ordered it… it should be here tomorrow… I could have made her one, but she liked the one she saw, so she went for it… I might be “altering” it, but not making it from scratch… this might be one of the smallest weddings I’ve ever been too… in fact, I’m sure it will be… probably 20 people max! I do plan to shop at some of those places to find what I’m looking for for the bedroom. I do love it so far, so it can only get better! :o)

Thank you Alina! So you know first hand about being Empty Nesters, don’t you? I might have to cry on your shoulder for the first week or so! This is going to be hard for me… and I think her too! But she’ll be busy with her new life… I guess I’ll have to get busy with my new room… actually I’ll have a new guest room to decorate too! :o)

Nanette, well, the wedding won’t actually be at our home, but you certainly have to have things “spruced up” a bit more than normal with family and friends coming by. It’s fun chatting with Rebecca about things that she wants to have at her wedding, even though it will be small, it can still be just as special! I’m planning on doing my part!

Barbara, it was hard not to mention Rebecca’s news but I tried to be careful… and I actually was! I know it will be an adjustment for me with her gone, but it has to be… and I’m happy for them… and they might not stay in PA forever! (A mom can hope…) I’ll send pictures when I get “permission.” You know me… the more pictures the better… :o) Thanks for your kind comments…

Okay, now on to some pictures from Susette… She had some ideas on how to store your doll accessories so they can be somewhat decorative… why put your doll hats inside a box if you can display them on a “mannequin” (underneath) Susette will have to tell us how they are on there… straight pins is my guess!

She wasn’t sure if these wardrobes were for the American Girl dolls or not, but they sure are functional and pretty too!

This next picture is a rack typically used for drying Chinese paint brushes, but look what Susette uses it for… pretty clever, huh?

Susette said these were candy boxes she has collected from Costo… great idea and I bet they are wonderful to keep things organized in.

Susette said this to me…
Here’s one more. Maybe it’s a hint that you could lighten your stash by having another drawing for the seamstresses among your followers. I sure had fun with what I came to regard as a serious challenge.

I was so lucky to win this Molly Chifferobe on eBay as I was able to drive to Pasadena, California, on the day before New Years Eve to get it without having to pay shipping or risking damage in transit. It’s funny, she said her girls were tired…that’s why they are laying down…

Well, I better get to bed… Susette can fill in the details I may have left out…

See you Monday,
Blessings, Jeanne

Thank you, Jeanne, for answering our comments! It’s way more fun this way, when we can actually have a conversation! I realize you are very busy, and can’t get to everybody right now, try as you might, so this was a good way to have our daily “sofa talk”!

It sounds like you have raised a very independent daughter! She isn’t afraid to show her opinions, but certainly has a sweet side to her! Imagine having a mother who is possibly one of the best seamstress in the world, and yet, she found a dress somewhere else, so got it! My daughter, Jennifer, is somewhat like that too, independent to the hilt! And I don’t mean being a good seamstress part either! Come to think of it, my mother and I were very different too!

Susette, what a darling way to store hats! Now I just need to find a manniquin! I love the before and after picturse of Molly’s chifferobe! Looks like they were completely exhausted when they got home from the dance!! What are you storing in those pretty Costco boxes?

    Have a great weekend everyone!

Dear Jeanne, we are all excited about the wedding now. It will be lovely.

Susette’s photos are awesome. I wonder if she makes “house calls” (laugh). I could use a house decorator/storage expert and so could my doll children.

I heard back from Ed about the answer to the question of who the dolls are that he is holding in the photo. They are Hung Hung and Lok Lok. He sent this link:

This morning I am off to visit the Doll Museum.

Jeanne, I read yesterday’s post but did not get to respond. Congratulations to Rebecca and her beau and her entire family! You have a lot going on but I am sure will handle all the moving parts seamlessly. I had never been to small wedding until my son and his now wife decided they wanted a very small wedding – 9 people including the bride and groom! It was at a state park, the weather cooperated and it was just beautiful. I found it much more relaxing than the traditional wedding my daughter chose. Small or large weddings are busy times. I hope Rebecca loves her dress.

So much to do, so little time! Can’t wait to hear about the wedding venue. Maybe outdoors with a covered area in case of rain? Would love to hear about it when the decision is made. We too offered our yard to our daughter, but no, she was married on a golf course with all of the venue trimmings. 🙂
Here’s my guess. Rebecca is moving to a PA farm. Does her husband to be have a dog or other pets? It will be interesting to see how far off I am. Any one else have a guess? 🙂
Susette’s storage ideas are wonderful. Her girls are so lucky to have such a creative mom. What a wonderful excuse to pick up candy at Costco. Those boxes are perfect.
Leave it to Rebecca to find the perfect dress online. Hope we can see it, after the big day. I was just thinking of Reuben prancing down the aisle as the ring bearer. Well, maybe not. 🙂
    Have a fun weekend everyone.

  5. Jeanne:

I’ve been MIA, just catching up and thrilled for Rebecca and her fiancé! Wishing them every happiness ❤️

Your bedroom looks wonderful, .. hubby is such a keeper! Seriously, is there anything George can’t do?

I seem to find my RRFF Bella has contacted all of her cousins, as I find myself looking at 5 where there was one! My newest girl, Anaelle, is busy in my sewing room. The other Rubies are a bit miffed that she just arrived and is getting the “action” Her delicate beauty is inspiring.. definitely a Regency girl.

    1. Laura in Ohio

      Hi Shara,
I hope you share what you make for Anaelle. I really liked her, but didn’t have the money to get her. Wish the timeline wasn’t so short between seeing and having to buy.

    2. Joy in northern CA

Can’t wait to see what beautiful outfit you make for Anaelle. The one here is inquiring also. 🙂

It will be enjoyable to hear about the wedding plans as they progress.
What a great storage idea for hats, Susette. I see Samantha’s meet, Nellie’s meet, and felicity’s summer hats- three of my favorites!! Nice storage wardrobes and I see Felicity peeking out from behind the clothing rack.
No wonder Molly and Kit were exhausted. they must have had a big night on the town.
I see that little radio on Molly’s night stand. I picked up one of those as well the year our Walgreen’s had them.

Kit and Molly are wearing the dresses I made when I won the drawing for a packet of fabrics Jeanne offered as a challenge to see what the winner could come up with. I used every inch of the fabrics. I didn’t have a good picture of the wardrobe by itself and decided to let you see how tired Molly and Kit get when I’m too slow with the modeling session. I don’t use stands.

The mannequins are from Home Goods many years ago by now. Yes, straight pins slipped down the fabric covering keeps the hats in place as it’s made of styrofoam and just decorative, not a real seamstress’s mannequin. Dusting is easy with a spray can of plain air from Home Depot. I have another mannequin with a jacket, necklaces, small bags as well as a scarf from her Etsy site that Rebecca made.

    Hi, Jeanne,
My apologies for not writing in a day or so. Still loving this blog as much as ever, of course!
Your bedroom must seem like heaven with fresh ceiling and wall paint and the new floor. Boy, you certainly don’t “gather any moss” sitting around, twiddling your thumbs. Church, friends and family, blog, sewing, doing huge remodeling projects, and now a wedding. Holy cow, woman!
Well, all my best wishes to your dear Rebecca who is absolutely beautiful. Sounds like she got a lot of great genes…creativity, frugality, DIY …what a catch she is! Now I just hope her fellow realizes what a gem he has and treats her well and with all the respect she deserves. Maybe marrying off a daughter is more of a deal than a son. I wouldn’t know, but life changes all the time. It’s always exciting. We all look forward to seeing these wedding plans transpire, and small is fantastic. Weddings today are way out of control in my opinion. So, enjoy every minute of planning with Rebecca and George…and, of course, wee Reuben.

Susette! You sewed those dresses?? They are incredible! Thanks for sharing your very fun ways of storage and display. I miss doing fun displays. Well, good for you and thanks for sharing these pictures with Jeanne and us. BTW, I was intrigued when you wrote about getting little Alice tea sets at Home Goods. Are these sets doll sized or little girl play sized? How I love the little details!

    Have a wonderful Sunday, everyone!

    1. Susette from Southern California

Thanks for your comments on the storage ideas. The tea set is child size. I’ll look up the pictures from a tea party several years ago. Yes, I sewed the dresses using the fabric and trimmings from Jeanne’s drawing. Hinting that maybe she’ll have it again so we can see someone else’s creations.

  9. Kathie from Omaha

Susette your dolls and ideas for storage are so clever! The hats look so cute all together !
The matching closets and chifforobe are stunning.
Jeanne you may be the first mother of the bride without nerves. Sounds like Rebecca has been thinking about details and knows what she wants! Good luck on getting the finish work done!

  10. Marilyn from Colorado

Felicitations to Rebecca. An etiquette book I read when I was babysitting 60 years ago said to congratulate the groom to be and wish the bride happiness — it certainly suits for this couple.

My sister-in-law and I altered the (expensive) wedding dress of her daughter-in-law to be. Neither of us realized that our eyes were not what they had been. Watching her remove her glasses and hold the needle 2″ from her eyes to thread it was pretty tense-making. The daughter-in-law didn’t sew, but she rapidly figured out how to help as much as possible. It took us two days, at the end of which I could barely stand up or see. It was worth it.

You may be the one altering this dress — the big question is — will you make your mother-of-the-bride dress?

  11. Charlotte Trayer

I’ve been MIA for a couple of days–woke up Thurs. morning, shivering and shaking, and could not get warm (in our 80° house)–spiking a temp, of course. Finally warmed up enough to get out of bed and took my temp. It ranged in the 100-101-point something all day as well as Friday. Today it’s better, although still in the 99 range (normal for me is 97.6). I figure it’s a sinus infection, because Wed. I was quite dizzy. Needless to say, I won’t be in church tomorrow–first time I’ve missed in I don’t know how long.

Now, to catch up. You know Jeanne, even though your curtains and bedding are “old” and you do plan to replace them, they still kind of blend with the walls, etc., and don’t actually look bad at all. You probably notice it more than any of us would!

I would give you a bit of food for thought, though, when it comes to making a quilt: use quilting cotton, not sheets. Sheets are Much more closely woven, and quilting or tying it (whichever method you use) will be more difficult. Plus, you will have a lot more choices if you got to fabric yardage, and many companies make coordinates that will mix/match/blend in various ways. I think you’ll be very happy with the results. (FWIW, I always prewash all my quilting fabric to remove sizing as well as any possible shrinkage before I start. Some don’t. If you want that crispness, you can always spray with fabric finish/starch and press the fabrics before you cut.)

Oh, and thanks for the update/explanation about why the reply box is requiring okays. Considering your news, I think we can wait a few more days for it to come back to normal!!

What exciting news!! Your announcement of Rebekah’s engagement was sort-of a surprise, but not really, too much, considering her age and factors mentioned by others. Not too long ago, I was kind of wondering if she had a special young man in her life, but I figured, when she’s ready, you’ll tell us. I will also look forward to seeing the pictures when the time comes! Sept. is a nice time to get married in the midwest–the worst heat of the summer should be over, and weather should still be pretty nice.

Susette, thanks for sharing your pictures. You have many wonderful and clever ways of storing things!! I will have to see what I’ve got around here that I can repurpose. Hm, I wonder how many Costcos will have a run on chocolates at Christmastime this year!! I remember when stationery came in beautiful, divided boxes, and I sure loved getting them–and using them, when the paper was gone!

  12. Sally from Colorado

    Hi, Charlotte,
So sorry you have been ill. Are you doing better today as the day wears on, I hope? You just take good care of yourself.
Not that I’m in any immediate danger of getting out my sewing machine, I appreciated your comment about quilters cotton vs a bedsheet. Makes a lot of sense, and I’m sure Jeanne will appreciate it.
Hope she posts a picture of Rebecca and her husband-to-be soon and tells us his name. Very exciting times for the Wiedlocher family!
Get better, my dear sofa sister!
    Hugs,
    Sally
BTW…I loved stationery boxes, too. In fact, I am using a few tin ones to set up my RRFF dolls in tiers to be better seen. Guess we need to start buying candy like Susette!
