Which doll gets the first dress made in my new sewing room?

I sat down with a piece of paper and made a list of possible posts for the upcoming days. I easily came up with 14 topics…and then I listed all my dolls…I put the pieces of paper face down on my dining room table and asked my hubby to pick one…

You see, to be honest, I have been just a little bit overwhelmed at starting up again…it wasn’t that I was afraid I had forgotten how to sew, it wasn’t that I was worried about messing up my new sewing room, and it wasn’t that I didn’t want to sew.

So I tried to figure out what I was feeling…and you know what I think it was? It was the “coming to the end” of my big, dreamy, sewing room project… it was almost over and there were no more decisions to make, no more things to buy, (well, maybe a few) :o) It was almost like a letdown…you know, like the day after Christmas or after you buy something you’ve been dreaming of forever and then the new wears off. I know that all sounds hokey, but it happened and now it is time to get back to what I do and what ALL this was for…SEWING FOR DOLLS!!!

So, I guess you’re wondering what was on the piece of paper my hubby picked?

It was…Navi. I know Laura was cheering for Kirsten to be up next, but she’ll have to wait a bit longer.

I was almost relieved that my “first” project was for my littlest girl and would come together quickly. I was thrilled at the same time because I really enjoy sewing for this little 6 1/2″ bundle of joy.

I found a pretty little blue and yellow cotton print and made a simple sleeveless dress that closes in back with 3 sets of snaps.

I had the perfect color of blue wool felt to match. I also had the tiny yellow buttons to decorate her jacket.

The dress and jacket went together in one evening which leaves me time tomorrow to maybe get this finished!!
Woohoo!!

I hope you like it.

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

    Hooray! Jeanne is sewing again!!

I know what you mean; I went thru a “dry” period a number of years ago, where I just wasn’t doing any sewing at all. Then the fabric store told me about a small quilt guild that was meeting there, and the only requirement was to make one quilt block a month, so I joined, as I figured I could handle that….and it got me back into other sewing eventually, too. So, yes, the way you handled it–having your husband draw a name–was a good way to start.

Navi does look really cute in her new dress and jacket. I am thinking there might be a bit more embellishment coming on the jacket??? Can’t wait to see!!

BTW, thanks, everyone, for your nice comments and prayers for Ron. I had him stay home from church today (I didn’t give him a choice, really!!), so he was able to just rest as much as he needed. The dizziness when he moves his head/sits up/lies down is much less, so he is making some progress. The “bump” looks better, too.

    1. Hi Charlotte,
So glad to hear that Ron is on the mend.
It’s nice to hear you’ve been to Mackinac, too. We went for the first time in 1975 or 1976. I was seven or eight, not sure. I do remember all the lilacs in bloom on the island and my absolute fascination with the no cars and horses and carriages. We went each year until I was 13. One year we rode horses instead of bikes around the island… very memorable. First stop that trip, and every other, was May’s fudge. The island was “less touristy” then. It was fun to get the seagulls flying around your head and pause in front of you midair for their piece of bread. We do have seagulls here in Ohio out at the river park. I still have a number of the oval black stones we picked up on Lake Superior. We also went a few times to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Paradise. I’ve been back a couple of times with my daughter, but it’s been many, many years.

Laura, we always went in the summer, I think, so I didn’t see the lilacs (although they are my favorite flower, and have been, practically forever!). When my husband and I were there a few years ago (maybe 2004?), a seagull brazenly grabbed part of my hot dog when I set it down briefly!! LOL You have to watch those things!! LOL

Yes, we got some fudge, and I am still wearing my Mackinac Island t-shirt (which has lilacs on it), although I’m afraid it’s due to be retired soon.

  2. Navi is the perfect choice, Jeanne! You already have the “big” parts done, and can now count on getting to the finish line in no time at all, and you feel like you have accomplished something…….and you have!

I can’t imagine how tiny Navi is, and to be able to sew for her is amazing! The print is the perfect size, and yes, something else like a pretty hair bow in the same fabric as the dress?

It should be a fairly nice day today, sort of, but the rest of this week will be a heat wave, and you might as well be inside sewing!

  3. Shoes, that’s what that doll needs, and maybe a purse. Not to mention Linda’s hair bow. As a temporarily hand impaired person, I appreciate the snaps as much as I like the fabrics you have chosen.

Big news here — Elizabeth has arrived after eleven days on the road with USPS. I haven’t had an experience like this since Julie was on her way here and we both thought she was lost. She’s perfectly beautiful.

    1. So happy for your new arrival. I’m sure she is enjoying her new surroundings after her long arduous journey. 🙂

      1. So happy to hear Elizabeth has arrived safely. I’m sure she is getting acquainted with the rest of your dolls. Just curious as to the other AG’s you have? I always love to know who others choose. Enjoy your new friend.

  4. I love the simplicity of this outfit. Lucky Navi. My girls would love it too. If it were me, I wouldn’t bother making shoes or anything else except maybe a simple hair tie. It will sell so quickly. 🙂
So are you and George enjoying tomatoes? We finally have blossoms on the plants here. Going to be awhile longer for tomatoes though.

  5. Wow! That was quick. I figured it might take awhile just to figure out who will be the lucky gal to receive a new outfit and here you are, doll picked and outfit made. Sweet little outfit and I love Navi. She is just so adorable.

I love picking out the doll for the new outfit, the pattern and the fabric, but if I don’t get to sewing right away, and I usually don’t, I lose some of that enthusiasm. Once I get started then I’m motivated and can finish with no problem. I finally finished the blouse yesterday for one of my FF. It was supposed to be for Bella, but she decided she wanted to keep her pretty Easter dress on a little longer so Sara will be the recipient of the new skirt and blouse. Her Easter dress had bunnies on it and a bunny ear headband. She was more than ready for a change. The skirt is pretty simple so maybe I’ll get that made this afternoon. I have to mow this morning and that usually leaves me drained for the rest of the day. I have a riding mower, but in the heat right now I’m left feeling as if I did it with a push mower.

  6. That was quick!! Navi was probably the BEST choice as you can put an outfit together rapidly and feel a sense of accomplishment. The blue and yellow are lovely for summer
I’m so glad to see that you are sewing again.
I’m assuming you’ve seen the to be 1980’s doll, Courtney. The doll is wrong for me because of lack of feathered hair, but I’m hopeful I can make my own mini me version sometime in the future . I also think, beyond possibly some accessories, that AG is taking her wardrobe in a different direction than I would choose (not positive as we’ve only seen the “meet’ outfit) It does feel a little strange to think my teenage years are now historical *frowns*

  7. Glad to hear Ron is recovering, Charlotte. Everybody, be careful out there! (Who knows what TV show I’m quoting?)

Jeanne, did I see a piece of Daisy Kingdom Paper doll fabric in your pictures yesterday? When DK was new, I had no dolls or girls to sew for. Now I have 2 panels of printed doll dresses. But not the paper doll panel. I keep looking at all things DK on Etsy and EBay. Until I make those 2 dresses, I am fighting my inclination to get more fabric. Is using those panels like cheater cloth for quilts? The other fabric I missed out on is Mary Englebreight.

I’m making a crafty project for my son’s new house. I’ll take pictures when I’m done. We have collaborated on craft projects before. He gets the idea and I bring it to life! He’s all moved in. I know I’ll be hemming some curtains for him. We also have an antique bedroom set that needs some repair. He is going to put it in his guest room. There is damage to the top of one piece that I am going to work on before it goes in his house.

  8. So pleased you are sewing again Jeanne. Navi looks lovely. I bought another Our generation doll at the weekend and put a bid on another and my daughter also bought one off the same auction site still in it’s box so between us Ashley (my granddaughter) and I will possibly have 5 dolls so we can both have fun. Have a couple of quilts to finish first though!
Look forward to seeing how you finish Navi and what you start on next.

  9. Navi looks sweet as ever in her little blue dress and the jacket it so cute and tiny. Finding a toy samall enough might be a trick though😉
So was it easy to put your hands on everything you needed to make the outfit? Was it faster
    to find all the Items?
    She looks adorable!

Dear Jeanne, I love this little dress. Navi looks so cute. I am glad that you are having fun in your sewing room.
