Whenever you remodel, or renovate, or remake or redo, it always takes a while to get everything in order before you get to the really fun part. At least that’s what seems to happen to me…no matter what project I am working on!!
When my hubby and I were redoing the kitchen at our church, it seemed like we were never going to be finished with the tearing out and the demolition work. Then it was the electrical work that seemed to take forever…anyway, it was thrilling when we got the cabinets set in and the floor finally put down.
So I’m guessing I’ll be pretty excited when we get all these things completed in my sewing room and I can actually put my stamp on it.
Today there were 2 projects I wanted to get completed…get my book shelf sanded/primed and painted and give my window a second coat of paint. Good news…I did!
This is just the first coat, as I didn’t get to the second one. I was busy playing “assistant to the Caulk King!”
As I was getting ready to prime the book shelf, my hubby got around behind it in the corner and started looking at things. He was quiet, so I knew he was thinking… that’s what he does…
That 2×4 board that you see above the book shelf was where a closet used to be…we tore out the closet when I first claimed the room as my sewing room and I guess I always assumed it was a support board…turns out, my hubby studied it and said it wasn’t. He grabbed his pry bar and said, “you aren’t ever going to put a closet back in here are you?”
Practically as soon as I said, “no,” I heard the crack of the pry bar pulling against the wood above it. It came down pretty easily, but now there was a pretty big space between where the ceiling tiles were put in place, apparently AFTER the closet was added. He had a plan, he said…
He looked at the corner and didn’t have anything positive to say about the job someone had done long ago. It really was a hodge podge of a mess up there and he wanted to fix it…
Who am I to stop him?? :o)
So I let him do his thing while I finished up with my primer coat on the book shelf.
He took down the 2 x 4 and the two pieces of trim along the walls… there was a gap in the paneling there too, so we decided to use some of our 1 x 4 trim and cover it. Then we put one across the ceiling.
He did his handiwork with his caulk gun and even as multicolored as it is now, with spackle and caulk and several colors going on, it still looks better. This corner wasn’t wet, but it was nasty looking to me and when he was trying to fix it there was nothing behind the paneling to support it… he managed to get a 12″ board behind the paneling at the top to make a little more stable. Then he cut a piece of trim and screwed and nailed it up there.
I didn’t take any pictures of how it looked when he was finished, but will show you tomorrow…
And then this happened…my hubby saw my track lighting over my ironing board and said he could paint it with some hammered bronze paint he had instesd of the gold it is now. So he took them down and told me to scuff up the slick gold finish with some sandpaper so the paint would stick to it…he didn’t get to it, but they are on the table “waiting” for him to be freed up… :o)
I need to get to bed, because I know what tomorrow holds… more of what I did today! :o)
Now, if you need a little dolly fix, here are a few pictures for you. The winner of the Mother’s Day Giveaway was Julia! She received a pretty cameo necklace, made by Rebecca, and one of my half slips for her dolls. She also received some chocolate, which she said was opened before any pictures were taken!) But of course, Julia! You always open the chocolate! :o) She sent me these pretty pictures of her girls. Elizabeth is in her Samantha dress and her other doll, a Karito Kid, is in a red and white dress, and she has on the half slip under her dress.
Thank you Julia! I hope your girls and you enjoy your prizes! Thank you too, to everyone who entered the Giveaway, there’ll be more another time! Also thank you to my new subscribers! I hope you’ll join in sometime!
See everyone tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Just when we think you are almost “done” with your sewing room, George figures out a couple more things to do to make it better yet! What a guy!!
Congratulations to Julia for winning the drawing, and thanks for the pictures! Your girls look quite happy with their prizes!
Today was our 46th wedding anniversary, and it was a very quiet day. We did manage some grocery shopping–I used the electric cart in the store, and Ron brought his walker in so he could sit down when needed. The hardest part, really, was getting the groceries into our house, since neither of us is particularly strong at the moment (I’m still recovering from that fall last week–I see my doctor Wed.), but we managed. This is only the second time we didn’t “go out” for our anniversary dinner–the last time was a few years ago when he had a big surgery the day before. This year, nothing was open! We’ll go later in the year. But the weather held, and we got several “real” cards and a number of electronic greetings, so not a bad day for two old folks! đ
Dear Charlotte, happy anniversary! I am happy you had a small outing, even if it was only to the grocery store. Maybe you can celebrate again in 6 months and have a half-anniversary dinner.
Happy 46th, Charlotte. David and I just had our 40th in January. Fortunately it was before the big shutdown so we did get to go to our favorite restaurant. Sean and Dionne had their 9th in March, right at the time the shutdown started so they were not able to do their usual celebrating. We’ve also postponed Mother’s Day celebrating in the hopes that we can do our traditional family dinner at Benihana’s. Hopefully we can all start celebrating our events where we want soon.
Well Jeanne, here goes “Another Day in the Life”! Your sewing room is getting better and better, and thanks to George, things just keep rolling along! The ceiling certainly looks a lot better, and boy, was that a patch up job that the previous owners did!
We are still on pins and needles here wondering what the Bull Test Station is! I know George worked at SIU with the bulls, but still what is the Bull Test Station??
Oh Julia, how pretty your girls look! The necklace is just perfect for Elizabeth, and the slip is holding out the other dress just the way it should! Congratulations! Hope the chocolate was good!!
Charlotte, congratulations on 46 years of wedded bliss! The “bliss” part might be questionable, but you two were certainly made for each other!
Congrats to Julia on her win. Such wonderful prizes. The necklace looks lovely on Elizabeth.
When I was observing the bookshelf yesterday, I wondered about the old closet details. Glad George decided to do away with them. Humm, if you need more tiles to fill in, can some at the back be removed to fill in as it seems like the bookshelf if moved square to the room would cover up any that are missing. I would love to see a photo of the bookcase moved to the right and pulled out square with the room. Or now, maybe it can be angled across a corner of the old closet? It looks so much better with the white primer coat. Whatever you store in there will pop with the light background.
Worked on the blackberry yet again as well as quickly moving anything below the old catalpa tree as other person was playing with his electric pole saw while on top of the playhouse. Tree limbs falling in unsuspected places as they would come down. Another mess to clean up. Sound familiar??
Can’t wait to see the next edition of the Adventures of George and Jeanne.
Dear Jeanne, you two are just an amazing duo. Did you know that Chip and Joanna Gaines (Fixer Upper) are getting their own network? I bet they would love to scoop you up (smile).
Congratulations to Julia and her sweet dolls for winning the prize.
Looks like this project could go on for awhile. Can’t wait to see the bookcase finished and populated. All this reminds me of when we first moved into our house, 30 years ago in August. Previously someone had added on a breezeway, a bedroom and the garage. But they had never changed anything that was already there. David called it the rabbit warren. It was a maze of short hallways between the kitchen and the add on. David has always been one to take out any wall that didn’t need to be there so he took out the one series of hallways which enlarged the kitchen and then opened the kitchen up to the breezeway so it’s now a sunny sitting room off the kitchen. I wish he could have taken out the wall between the kitchen and the dining room to make it more open concept, but that wall needed to stay where it was so the kitchen, dining and living rooms are stand alone. Not great for entertaining, but the kitchen is large and eat in. I have a plaque from my grandmother that says, “No matter where I serve my guests it seems they like my kitchen best”. Not a choice but a necessity in my house.
Congratulations to Julia. Thanks for sending pictures. I hoped the winner would do that. The necklace is so pretty and looks great on Elizabeth and the slip under the adorable dress on her Karito Kid is perfect. What is the Karito Kid’s name?
No grandkid duty today but tomorrow again. I mentioned awhile back that my son Sean had gotten his A/C license. He is gung-ho on getting his business going and, since we are the ones with the room for it, he runs his business out of David’s shop. Since David’s business has always been on our property (we don’t have zoning) this works well but it does mean Sean has to travel a ways when they need to do prep work for jobs. Fortunately I will not have the grandkids Thursday. I would have refused that one if asked. It is the final day of school for them and all work needs to be turned in by the end of that day. My daughter-in-law is an ace at seeing they get their work done on time so she definitely needs to be the one in charge that day.
Things are opening up here more and more every day. Restaurants are at 50% now. Our son and family still can’t join us in church (possibly starting June 7) but we did meet after church for lunch so that felt somewhat normal. Fortunately one of our favorite restaurants (Chili’s) is dine in now but our other favorite, Red Lobster, was still not open for dine in as of last week. Maybe this week because the 50% started just this past Monday. And it looks like Texas Roadhouse is open.
For a small room it has taken lots of TLC and you both are awesome at that! The coffin and corner are both going to be so much better.
Congratulations Julia ,you have an especially pretty AG doll! And that red and white dress is adorable!
Charlotte…hope another few days will make some of those nagging pains go away. My hubbyâs fall last week is somewhat better but he couldnât see a dr until today…and I couldnât go along. They did a ultra sound last week and that was when they told hmi to use the aspercreme w lidocaine. Today was the Dr and x ray, hummm a cracked bone. No special treatment…just âtake it easyâ? Seems kind of odd to me.
From experience, I can tell you, Kathie, that sometimes cracks in bones don’t show up right away. Hope your hubby heals quickly and feels much better soon!
HAPPY ANNIVERSARY, Charlotte!! Did you get any rubies??
Your sewing room is getting there, slowly, but surely. I’m sure all the hard work with be worth it when you see it finished.
Congratulations, Julia!! I’m so happy for you. Elizabeth looks beautiful. The cameo necklace really suits her. Your other doll has a sweet face and seems very pleased with her new slip. Chocolate covered cherries… uum. I love Queen Anne brand Cordial Cherries. We used to get them on our summer trips to St. Ignace and over to Mackinac Island. OH no, I just thought of May’s fudge on the island Yummy!!
The picture doesnât really do the cameo on the necklace justice. Itâs crystal with depth and iridescence like a soft rainbow. The chocolate covered cherries are disappearing fast! Delicious! My Karito Kid is Gia, she is Italian and her parents own a hotel. They came with books telling their back story. She is very pleased to have a petticoat to fluff out her dress skirt. Thanks again for the surprise, Jeanne. đ
What lovely prizes, Julia! So sweet of Jeanne.
Jeanne, your room is getting better every day, even if it has a case of what we call âthe begatsââyou know, a floor change begets a paint job begets new window coverings…..and on and on.
Charlotte, happy anniversary! I hope you get to celebrate sooner rather than later!
