Eden’s 1950’s Valentine doll dress is finished…

I’m proud of myself! I finished Eden’s new Valentine dress, but didn’t have time to take some pretty pictures for Ebay. I’m hoping that might happen tomorrow so I can be proud of myself two days in a row!! :o)

I’ve been a little slow at bringing this all together, but I guess it’s okay, since last Friday, it looked like this:

…and now it looks like this! :o)

I made a pretty white slip with two layers of tulle so it holds out her dress wonderfully!!

The back of the dress is now finished with 5 sets of snaps underneath some pretty pink buttons.

Her belt ties into a pretty bow now.

I first made a ribbon to just tie in her hair, but my selling experiences reminded me most of my buyers love the pre-tied hair bows. This bow is pre-tied but attached to a snap clip so the winner can use it however they like.

I think Eden looks just like a young girl from the 1950’s. But she could also be from the 40’s if you can get over the “fullness” of her skirt. OR… maybe she’s just a pretty modern girl in a lovely Valentine’s Day dress… you decide! :o)

Here is a picture so you can see the right length of the dress…it hits just at her knees…

I have something to go with the dress, but I’ll save it for my Ebay pictures.

Eden has been extremely patient while I finished this dress… don’t you agree? (My life has been too busy lately… sorry I haven’t answered your comments… but I have read them…)

Hope you like it!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

That really turned out beautifully, Jeanne!! Nicely accessorized, too, and the petticoat adds so much to the skirt–reminds me of something I wore in the mid-to-late 1950s!

Yesterday Linda D. wrote: “I don’t recall having lace on my socks in the 40″s, but I think my younger sisters did in the 50’s.” I don’t remember lace on my socks in the 1950s (I turned 13 in 1959), but I do remember that some socks had knitted-in designs on the cuffs–could be flowers (for little girls) or animals, or maybe a train (for little boys), things like that. I didn’t have a lot of socks like that, but I think I did have at least a pair or two when I was younger. I also remember cable-stitched knee socks! However, we didn’t wear tights back then.

As to the shoe discussion: I wore corrective shoes until I was 10, so most of mine were ugly oxfords. I do remember one pair with two straps across, and they were RED!! I was in heaven, even though they Were “corrective”. And when I got my first pair of REAL dress-up shoes, I thought that was the best thing ever!!! LOL Now as an adult I have Really small feet, plus I sew a lot of my clothes, and with all that background, suffice to say, I love pretty shoes!! Can’t wear heels any more though–bum knee!

Happy anniversary to Barbara and David! We had a small celebration with a renewing of our vows at our church for our 40th; it was just a year or two after some really serious health problems of Ron’s, and I figured we’d better do it Now, because who knew what would happen next?! Now in May we will be married 46 years!

And thanks, Barbara, for the birthday greetings for Ron. I think he enjoyed his day, although it was a quiet one.

Also, I see that you would like to know where Jeanne got those felt flowers, too!!!

  2. Well, isn’t that dress darling, Jeanne! I would have loved that one, for sure and would have had so much fun twirling around like a princess! The pretty slip did it’s job perfectly! I would be in heaven with that one, and pretty white shoes too!

The hair bow is nice, but the only doll I could put that on would be
Ruthie, who is almost like Eden. Both Molly and Susan would be needing two ribbons for their braids and pig tails, so I guess just a ribbon for them would work.

Well, Charlotte, I think my sisters , the youngest one, for sure who was even younger than you, did wear those frilly socks, but they were very new at the time. I do remember her also wearing those cute little can can panties, with the ruffles in the back! There never were things like that for me! Too old I guess.

I think that Jeanne mentioned one time that she got a package or two of those precut felt flowers on EBay, or maybe Etsy, but I could be wrong. Maybe you could look them up, unless she gets to you about it.

Happy Anniversary to Barbara and hubby, and Happy Birthday to
    Ron!

  3. The dress is just so “Jeanne”… perfect in every way!
Love the print, the check trim, the flowers, the way the petticoat looks. I’m sure some sweet AG is going to be beside herself in that dress!
Charlotte I remember lots about my clothes as a kid but for the life of me I don’t remember anything about socks. They must have all been boring white😉

  4. Eden’s dress turned out so lovely. She will have a mailbox full of Valentines from her admiring friends. 🙂
Been frantically looking for larger sized doll patterns. I can’t remember, but have you sewn much for those over 18″?
Charlotte, I had to wear those dreaded white oxfords too. Not that it helped in the long run. I turned out fine and did lots of dancing and song leading in high school. 🙂
Looking forward to seeing Jeanne’s latest.

  5. What a sweet dress, slip and hairbow. I definitely think double-duty could be in order for this dress – Valentine’s and Easter.

Mostly what I remember about socks was how we often got multi-packs of colored socks for school. We loved that. We kept white for Sunday, but we usually had red, navy, brown and dark green. One of the back-to-school pictures I have is my sister and I in pretty brown sister dresses bought by my grandmother. I had white socks on, but Beth wore brown. The picture is black and white, but I remember the dresses and socks well. My two youngest sisters were born in 1953 and 1958. I don’t remember them wearing frilly socks. My parents would have considered that a waste of money. My daughter had tons of them and in colors too. And she had some of those pretty socks with the designs on the cuff. I bought lacy socks for my granddaughter, but she rarely dresses up enough to wear them, even for church, or she wears them with her boots and you can’t see them.

I remember the cable knit knee highs too. I think girls started wearing tights when I was in high school. I remember a funny story about a girl who went to church with me. She showed up for choir practice one night in tights that had more runs than not. My family didn’t have much money but I wouldn’t have been allowed out of the house wearing those. The next year don’t I see her picture in the paper with the debutantes who were coming out. What a shock and how little we actually know people. Her family was quite wealthy and she went to a private prep school in Bethlehem but you would never know just by being around her and her surname meant nothing to me at the time. Most of us wore “nylons” to school in high school. Funny how the girls don’t wear those much anymore and they wear socks to school. But then we didn’t wear pants to school. My how times have changed.

  6. Eden’s dress is so, so pretty. I love the hair bow is is a match to the trim. I love her little ruffled socks as well. My daughter had a bunch of those for church, with lace, double rows of lace, and ruffled tulle. Charlotte, my daughter also had socks with small embroidered flowers in blue, pink, or yellow. She would have worn these as a baby/ toddler in 1990-1994. I think I may have had similar ones in the early 1970’s.
The ruffled panties ring a bell as well. I know I wore them over my cloth diapers as an baby and my daughter had a pair or two as well as onsies with rows of eyelet in the back. I guess I liked frills, still do since my dolls all “live” in frilly times for the most part.

  7. Kudos, Jeanne!..Eden’s dress looks wonderful:) Definitely a ’50’s little girl classic!

My oldest daughter was born in 1960 and I made her dresses like these. I bought her ruffled can can panties, and lacy trimmed socks. She wore white leather high tops and had different colored (and white) frilly socks to coordinate with her dress. Every afternoon I polished her shoes and washed her shoestrings while she napped so she could look bandbox fresh when she woke up.
To this day, she blames me for being so picky about her shoes and clothes!! LOL

Dear Jeanne, I love the finished dress. I also like bows that are pre-tied. My dolls’ hair always gets tangled up in ribbons.

I like that this dress is at the knees. I like that look for little girls.
