A new sailor hat and a new play set…started

I said I was going to make a new sailor hat, extending the brim down about an inch; I just didn’t think I’d make a new one for “this” outfit. But, I just kept looking at the one on Samantha, thinking it looked way too skimpy, so I made a new hat for “this” set after all. I like it much better and I think you will too.

After going to town and picking up some sparkle garland and some little starry garland and a few boxes of sparklers, I was set to get some outside pictures. Samantha was quite the good poser for me today. The wind was actually blowing her little pinwheel as I was snapping pictures. It looked cute! :o) (Joy, just brought up something… “IF” for some reason I can’t ship sparklers in the mail because they are considered hazardous, I’ll substitute some nice candy instead. Okay?)

Here’s a trick for taking outside pictures… I used a wooden shish kabob stick and stuck it in the ground and put it behind her leg. Then I ran it just up under her romper pant leg and she leaned against it. It worked out perfectly and kept her from falling over. I could easily have used one for each leg for more stability.

Anyway, here are some shots… and if you want to see the rest, you can click on her picture at the top right sidebar or click HERE.

After I managed to get it listed, I looked at my stash of fabric and thought, “Is there anything else I can make for the Fourth of July that would be quick and cute at the same time? Well, I found this fabric with “All American Girl” on it and just HAD to start something using it. It’s not going to be a romper, but it will “look” like one. At least I hope it will.

Nellie said the blue in the stars went the best with her eyes, and I had to agree, so she’s going to model it… I guess!

I started it and thought I’d show it too you this way…

…but it was too ugly that way, so I decided to take a little more time this evening and add the elastic around the neck…

The back isn’t finished yet and I didn’t quite get it situated on her shoulders exactly right, so it looks a little crooked, but I’ll get it looking all nice and neat next time you see it! :o)

Have a Fabulous Friday!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

Samantha’s new sailor hat is Perfect, Jeanne! Looks much like mine from back in the 1960s! I didn’t have any fancy buttons or other decorations, though–and, frankly, never even thought about embellishing it in any way. I guess I was pretty conventional back then!

The whole outfit has come together so nicely, and I love the pretend sparkler you gave her to wave around! Such fun! Thanks for the good tip about stabilizing your dolls for outside pictures, too. I have shishkebob sticks (bought for sewing/crafts) but never thought to use them like that. Great idea!!

I love the beginnings of Nellie’s new outfit, too. What perfect fabric to use!! Now that you have a good sailor hat pattern, are you going to make one for her, too?

I actually got in the sewing room tonight–first time in a few days. Got a tiny bit more done for Rurik’s blanket, and also cut the pattern pieces out for a cute romper I think I’ll make for him. I do need to hurry, though–he’s 2 months old already, and the kids are probably wondering why they haven’t gotten anything from Aunt Charlotte yet!! LOL

    1. HI Charlotte,
I like Samantha’s new sailor hat much better now, too!
I used my shish kabob sticks for Nellie this evening outside too… You’ll see tomorrow…
I’ve been working in my sewing room today off and on too… working, then sewing, then working and sewing again… I made some headway… hope you did too!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. The new hat is just perfect, Jeanne! The whole outfit is darling, and it is clear to see that you not only “do” historical garments, but modern garments just as well! What a fun little outfit with all the “trimmings” for somebody’s doll! This is something any little–or big–girl would like! It would be cute for a girl and doll outfit, but of course, you aren’t going to do that!

I was trying to do some things in the yard yesterday, but had to stop, the wind was terrible! I can’t believe you could put a doll down on the grass, even though you had her “staked”, and not have her fall over or her hair mussed up! Clearly the wind was not at your place like it was at mine!

Nellie is another doll that can easily wear a modern outfit, and it looks like she will have a cute one! I remember wearing tops like that, even though I don’t think my childhood days would fit into what most people call modern! 😉

    1. HI Linda,
I used to do the little girl, dolly sets pretty often years ago. I’m glad you like the new set. I would have worn something like that when I was younger… especially if the pinwheel came with it.
Nellie’s outfit is all finished and you’ll see it tomorrow. Hope you like it too. I’m doing something “different” with it… and you’ll see that tomorrow too!
Thanks Linda… hope your day was less windy today… it was pretty here today.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. The outdoor photos are great! Using the skewers sounds like a perfect idea. I’m thinking chop sticks or old knitting needles too. I rarely set up dollies in our grass because it is so uneven, includes a variety of grasses, aka weeds, that are green and mowed, but maybe the props might make all of the difference. I’ll have to try that.
Nellie looks so cute in her All American Girl top. Maybe shorts will appear with it? We’ll have to tune in again to see what happens. 🙂

    1. HI Joy,
Yes, knitting needles would probably be great as they would be more sturdy than my kabob sticks…
My yard is a bit uneven too…so I have to search and search for the right spot without something weird in the background showing.
Shorts “just might” be what goes with Nellie’s new set… you’ll see tomorrow… and there’s a twist to this set too…
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. You were right about the hat, as you usually are. Now it’s really cute. What would it take to adjust the pattern and make a red bucket hat for the new outfit. Great fabric and perfect for Nellie, the Fourth, and the rest of the summer. Do you have red sandals?
It looks like we’re in for 5 days of rain. We need it, but not Linda’s wind. Keep your good weather. I’m really enjoying the outdoor pictures.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
I thought about another hat for Nellie, but Rebecca had a different idea… you’ll see tomorrow… No red sandals, but blue shoes… I hope that works for you… :o)
I hope our nice weather stays for a few days. I’ve enjoyed today…even when I walked Reuben around the yard.
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. The All American Girl fabric almost tempted me to break my fabric fast when I saw it. But I was strong and left it behind.
My patriotic petticoat came yesterday! It’s so cute! I put it on one of my dolls and let it peek out from under her dress. I’ll get a few pictures later.
I know I sent Jeanne pictures before but now I don’t remember how I did it. I tried to send a picture of the tablecloth apron but I don’t know if it worked. Just when I think I have computer stuff figured out a little, along comes a new wrinkle. Ugh.
Our son is coming this evening. Then tomorrow he and his dad are leaving to meet up with other guys and then traveling to a race that’s on Sunday. It’s a Father’s Day outing. It is so nice to have an adult child!

    1. HI Jillaurellia,
I’m so happy you like your new patriotic slip… and your dolls too!
I did receive your pictures Julia and will show them in a few days when I can work them in with a post… thanks so much.
I hope your guys had a wonderful time at the race… I guessing it’s car racing? There’s a car show somewhere around here tomorrow… I saw my hubby telling Kristoffer and Rebecca about it. I’m not sure what’s happening around here for Father’s Day…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Samantha looks great in her newly made hat and “sparklers”. And then there’s Nellie! It’s so exciting to read and see what you come up with Jeanne. You’re a beautiful person in endless ways….thank you again for sharing your life with us.

    Blessings.

    1. Thank you so much Becky,
I’m glad you liked the sparkler I made… it was an art project and I enjoyed the hunt for what to use as much as I did making it! Samantha really liked it!
You are too kind with your sweet words… thank you!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. The new hat is totally better. It makes a difference as do the sparkly accessories!
Puts me in the mood to get out all my 4th of July decorations.
The fabric you found is so fun! Will be back to see what happens tomorrow!

    1. Thanks for the compliment on the hat, Kathie. I’m glad you like it.
Did you get out your 4th of July things? I was wondering…
      You’ll see what I ended up with tomorrow…and a bit of a surprise… :o)
      Thanks Kathie,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. The change in the hat really makes a difference. I like it. Thanks for the idea of the shish kabob sticks for supporting dolls in the grass. You can’t even tell Samantha is anything but standing there on her own.

I can totally relate to Joy’s grass dilemma. My property has several different kinds of grass and weeds. It looks great when mowed but when it needs mowing it looks awful. I used the three-in-one (fertilizer, weed killer and fire ant killer) this year. The fertilizer and the fire ant killer part worked great but the weed killer part left a lot to be desired. Either that or what I call weeds in their estimation is really grass. Unfortunately some of the “grass” has burrs on the top of it.

I love the top of Nellie’s outfit. Can’t wait to see what ends up being the bottom.

    1. Hi Barbara,
I used the kabob sticks again this evening for Nellie in the yard. I used 2 sticks this time as she has looser legs than Samantha does.
We had a lot of different varieties in our grass too… and like you, when it’s mowed, it looks really nice, but not so much when it’s needing another hair cut! :o)
I hope you like what I did with Nellie’s outfit… You’ll see tomorrow.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. I would love to see something like Samantha’s romper in dumpling size. 🙂 It is absolutely adorable and the new sailor hat is perfect!

    1. HI Melody,
I would love to make one more 4th of July set, but I’m not sure I will. That same set in a Dumpling set really would be cute… hmmm… with a sailor hat to match… hmmm… I’d love to see Bailey in a sailor hat… :o)
      Thanks Melody,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Dorothy in PA and the World

Dear Jeanne, the outfit came together nicely. Thanks for the tip about posing your girl. I would never have thought of that.

I love the fabric for the new outfit. The print is just the right size for the doll.

Doll Club luncheon is tomorrow. I am very excited.

    Happy Friday to all!

    1. HI Dorothy,
I do like the way Samantha’s set turned out. She looks very sweet in it.
You’ll be able to see Nellie’s new set tomorrow and something different is happening on my blog post… you’ll see… unless you are too busy at your dolly luncheon. Eat a piece of cake for me… I don’t see any in the near future. :o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. Some fun information. I was just looking at the listing on the internet of tons of vintage toys you can make serious money from and was totally astounded to see that a mint-condition AG Molly could go for $5000. Kirsten, Samantha and Felicity can go for a lot too, especially if they were made by the Pleasant Company. I have none of these and even if I did I’m not sure I could part with her unless I was desperate, but I thought this was fun to know. Strawberry Shortcake and My Little Pony go for a lot too and I know my daughter had these. Really need to check the storage room. I do have a Furby (actually two) and they were on the list but they would bring in less because they are not in the original boxes. Do people really keep the boxes of toys they buy for their kids?

    1. HI Barbara,
I’ve seen those sites where all those things are listed and how high they can go… I’ve never had anything worth that much, but wouldn’t it be fun if you did! I look at the vintage toys when I’m out antique shopping. I see lots of things I used to have… :o( that must mean I’m getting old…
      Thanks Barbara,
      Blessings, Jeanne
