I found some free time this evening to get a little more done on Caroline’s dress. Rebecca finished her necklace and it’s very pretty. My pictures make the glass beads seem a little brighter than they are in regular light. They are a nice compliment to the colors in the dress and Caroline’s eyes. While not exactly the color of Caroline’s eyes, I think when I get the rest of the dress done, it will work well. Her eyes are kind of a hard color to copy.
After I saw the colors Rebecca picked for the necklace, I was able to move forward with a few more details. I’m going to use these two colors of silk ribbon and the soft lace will most likely be her fichu.
I don’t know if pretty green shoes were worn back in the Regency era, but they look sweet with the dress. I also have pink ones that I could give a try.
The snaps were sewn to the back with tiny rose colored buttons sewn on top.
I’ve also been looking at hairstyles from the Regency times and have a few ideas in mind…I’ll have to save that for last.
Now here’s a really dumb question… I now own Caroline but I’m not sure how to pronounce her name…is it Caroline like Marilyn, or Caroline like KaroLine, with a long i? Just wondering…
Well, that’s it for today…
Tonight’s my party, so we’ll see what tomorrow holds.
Blessings, Jeanne
Hi Jeanne, I skipped commenting yesterday….I was tired last night, mostly from being inside for 6 days in a row, and, believe it or not, much as I love snow, I am ready to see bare pavement outside again! And get my life back!! LOL (No joke, I do drive in the snow, but it’s a whole different ball game out here in the land of long steep hills! We were going to go out this afternoon, and I discovered there was a foot of snow in the driveway behind my car! I shoveled some, and it’s melting some, so we’ll try again tomorrow! Hope so…we’re running out of things!)
The ribbons you chose are gorgeous–I’m really torn! I think, though, that I prefer the pink/coral ribbon; it really brings out the pink in the print, and I do love that. The green is nice, too, and of course matches the gorgeous necklace, but maybe a little too matchy-matchy, especially with green shoes, also.
The lace is lovely. It’s funny, in the close-up pictures, the lace looks too white to go with the print, but in the distance shots, it works! Perhaps it’s the lighting? Or my monitor?
I would pronounce her name “caro-line”; to me, a short “i” goes with the -lyn ending. Unless, of course, she is Swedish, in which case, her name is pronounced “caro-lee-na”! (It was my grandmother’s middle name, and that’s how the family pronounced it; I am pure Swedish.)
How funny you should mention the Swedish pronunciation. Our previous priest has a daughter named Carolena (she spells it this way and people still mispronounce it). It is her mother’s middle name passed down from her grandmother. They have a son name Nils. They are of Scandinavian descent.
Caroline was my mother’s name.. “Care-o-line” is how she always pronounced it.
Rebecca’s necklace really picks up the colors of the paisley.. love the ribbon colors too! The soft lace is beautiful.! This will be a lovely ensemble.. Caroline is one of the prettiest AGs!
I’m feeling “very coral” this year as well and picked up 2 coordinates when I went to JoAnns the other day to match some yarn. It’s such a beautiful shade and everyone looks good in it.
I agree on Car-o-line, like South Carolina. All of your new colors are lovely, and now that we have a straight-on picture of the hem, the pantalettes will show nicely. Rebecca’s necklace is lovely, as always. Once you figure out her hair, you can figure out her headpiece. This is coming together quickly, but tonight is the couples’ dinner, so tomorrow we get a food and gathering report instead of a Regency dress report. I hope the dinner goes just as you’ve planned and that George is feeling especially well, since he’s had to miss a couple of parties and the food looked too good to miss.
I just went back to catch up on yesterday’s posts. It’s very funny to read the stories of trying to get new dolls in the house without the huge boxes being noticed.
I forgot to mention a new website my friend Nikki found. It’s great for inspiration for period clothes http://blog.americanduchess.com/search/label/17th%20Century I think the website pre-dates the real life American duchess.
I too pronounce Caroline like South Carolina, with a long i. When it is spelled Carolyn, then you go with the short i. But that’s just the way it has been with-me,andI guess different parts of the country do it differently. I think AG prououn es it with the long i too.
Both ribbons look perfectly fine with me, but I am wondering what you are going to do with them. Are you using both? The lace is beautiful, and I am wondering how a lace purse will be made…….a see through purse, or reticule?
The dress is coming along beautifully, and soon, I hope we get to see the finishing touches!
Maybe her hair can be half and half, with the front in some kind of updo, and the back hanging down in her beautiful curls.
Have fun tonight at your party! I am looking forward to seeing how you did,as the rest of us are. I think we are living vicariously through you! You seem to have so much fun! Yay, the soun is coming out, and we are in for a nice day, cold maybe, but not as cold as it has been!
Good grief, the misspelled words in my comment! My iPad is making it hard to make sense! I hope you can understand what I wrote, and no, I was not sipping a glass of wine!
Here I am, good griefing again! It seems that I have not commented on the very thing that this blog was about—-Caroline’s necklace! I was very frustrated with writing on the iPad, and wanted to finish as soon as possible, and left out the beautiful necklace! It is really a pretty one, and very “custom designed” for the dress! Congrats to Rebecca for again knocking it out of the box!
Interesting post. It could be a commentary on color I believe. When looking at the full length photo, the necklace matches the shoes perfectly. Love those vintage beads too. When the ribbons are added, more matching green to the necklace/shoes. When you look at the back and rose buttons, which are lovely, another color is drawn in. Does that coral ribbon match the buttons? I wonder what a sage/aqua ribbon might look like? Would the pink shoes match the rose buttons on the back or would another color be drawn in? What about white slipper flats instead? Have no idea of my point, but if I were doing it, I’d probably try and draw in the background sage aqua color. Maybe because I love that color so much. 🙂 It will all come together though with your magic touch. Looking forward to seeing it all finished.
We have had heavy rains all night here in northern CA, and now there are flood road closures. No ice or snow though. Hope Charlotte can get out of her driveway and pick up supplies soon. All of this weather reminds me of early pioneers. 🙂 Have a fun party tonight! Hope you can share some photos soon.
Caroline’s dress is just lovely and Rebecca’s necklace is just perfect. It really matches well. I like the beads she used, not only in color but the dividers add to it. The two ribbons are a perfect match – the green, and I think it’s peach or coral? I’m color blind on some shades. The waistband and gathers in the front add to the design of the dress as well.- Very regal.
It’s going to be a lovely set, Jeanne!
Oh, forgot- I believe it’s pronounce with the “i” bring a long “i”. Carolyn is how I would pronounce as Car-o -Lynn.
I say good grief too on my sentence structures. I really need to re-read what I write to see all of my mistakes- then I can rewrite them so the sentences make sense. I’m so embarrassed!! My last post was about the name Caroline. Line like in clothes line.
Caroline’s (with a long “i”) necklace is beautiful. Rebecca always does a lovely job. I think the coral/pink ribbon is the best. With the green necklace and the coral ribbon, it sets off the colors in the fabric so you tend to see them all. It’s funny how when we look at fabric we see it as predominately a certain color, while someone else may see another color in it as dominant.
Re pantalettes. I have some paper dolls (another of my collecting fetishes) of little girls with pantalettes under their dresses. There are four dolls and they are sisters so they go from young to older. I noticed that the youngest one has shorter dresses and more pantaloons showing while the older they get the less shows. It’s still there, but the dresses are longer. Don’t know how authentic this is, but it is interesting.
I have another funny story. The bicycle has been found out. Busted two days in a row. I really need some lessons in subterfuge. Hubby took a couple boxes out to recycling yesterday. And there the box was. But it was really sweet what he did. He came in telling me that one of the girls had told him they got a new bike. He noticed it had a scene in the box and was wondering if I wanted to keep it. I told him I’d thought of it, but it would only work for my very small dolls so I was fine. I took him in and showed him the bike – and then I told him how much it cost and how much I could have spent. lol
The weather here is totally amazing right now. Cold nights, days in the 60s and sunny, sunny, sunny. Unfortunately that means I will have to mow the lawn tomorrow – that is the weeds. But then I could use some sun. I feel I’ve been living underground the past few months.
Can’t wait to see the pictures of your dinner this evening. I know it is going to be a lot of fun.
Hi Jeanne. So much progress on Caroline’s dress. It is looking lovely. I’ve thinking about the shoes and was wondering if you have any tan or lite buff color to try on with the outfit. White can be so harsh and colors hard to match to ribbons etc. but buff ballet type would let the focus be on the outfit. Just my 2 cents. I like to keep tan and lite gray for my girls and can add a colored ankle ribbon if I want.
Have fun at the dinner.
Dear Jeanne, to which name does she respond? When you say “Caroline” (as in line up) does she respond or when you say “Carolynn” (as in stand in) does she respond?
It’s clearly a mother’s prerogative to name her child whatever she chooses but sometimes the children decide for us.
Here is my story. When Charlotte Noelle, my first Little Darling, arrived, I had planned to name her Simone. I dressed her and began to take photos of her. I said “Simone, what do you think?” She just looked at me. I said this name a few times and she did not respond. I finally realized that Simone was not going to be her name. I then looked at her and asked, “what IS your name?” She just kept looking at me. This time she was smiling.
I finally said, “Charlotte Noelle!” as the name came into my head. She promptly responded “yes Mama?” She has been Charlotte Noelle ever since. She is named for our dear Charlotte Trayer and for one of my ancestors.
But back to your question. I love the name Caroline (as in line up) and have it on my list of future doll names. I have loved it since I first heard it at the birth of Caroline Kennedy.
The necklace is very pretty and I love the pink and green colors.
I totally understand. After my Jane Tonner came to live with me, she heard me tell a story about when I as a child and this little girl named Jane lived down the street from my grandmother. She was a nasty little thing and so every time my sister and I misbehaved, we were told don’t act like a Janie. So Jane Tonner decided she needed a name change, but to what? For some reason the name Taylor kept occurring to me, so I asked her if she liked Taylor. She said she loved it, so now she is Taylor Jane. By the way, I have a friend named Jane and she is nice, so I kept Jane for her middle name.
Rebecca’s necklace is so pretty and it hides that less than lovely place where fabric and vinyl come together. Are you using both colors of ribbon? My favorite color combo is pink and green so no matter what you do I’ll love it! Her hair will be fun to see…it has just enough curl to lend itself to almost any style.
Have fun at the Couples Party! Be sure and tell us about your game ideas?❤️
I would pronounce her name as Caro line with a long o sound (mine is renamed). Carolyn to me is pronounce Caro lynn. It’s funny that you should bring up pronunciations of names. I’ve spent a fair amount of time correcting the way I want my name pronounced. I want it pronounced L ahr a or L awr a with an au (aw) sound like faucet. I often get it pronounce like the name LORA. How do you get an or sound out of au I don’t know, but it bothers me. I’ve taken to saying pronounce it like Lara from Dr. Zhivago, but put in a u when you spell it. Even though I was seven when the Little House show began, I know that is a contributing factor to the mispronunciation of my name. Laura is called Lora on that and Caroline is called Carolyn Well, enough of that!
Caroline’s necklace is lovely. Rebecca certainly has a eye for putting together just the right combination of beads for an outfit.
Hope you have a wonderful time at your party.
