I received an email from a woman named Norma who said she had just discovered my blog a few weeks ago. She was loving the posts and ran across the one where I showed how to make a doll slip. HERE and HERE. Then I wrote another post where I really streamlined the slip and reduced the bulk at the waist… this is the one we will be making… you can see that post HERE. Try as she might she just couldn’t quite get the hang of it because it was shown on a smaller doll and she was wanting to make a slip for an American Girl doll. I debated about what to write her back and before I knew it I asked if I did a sew-a-long, would she like to follow along and make her own slip? She was thrilled and said she would.
So, I guess we’ll be doing an “American Girl doll slip making sew-a-long” maybe next week. I wanted to give everyone who wanted to follow along a chance to get the supplies you would need. Basically it’s just a couple of things that you’ll need.
You’ll need some kind of netting/tulle or lace… here are a few examples…
It can be the tulle you find on the rolls or you can buy it by the yard. You will only need half a yard or less, but you might get a yard just in case you want to make another one when you finish your first one! *wink*
You’ll also need some kind of stretchy lace for the waistband. You can find the white or cream at Hobby Lobby in about 2″ wide. You could also use lingerie elastic, but I’ll be showing how to use the stretch lace and maybe show the elastic as an alternative.
This is what your slip will look like when we get done… We might even have to have a fashion show when everyone gets finished…
Well, let’s see who wants to follow along. I’ll let you know when we will do it next week. I’m going to go slow and then we can discuss any problems you might be having as we go along. So it might be in 2 parts… I’ll give some tips along the way.
Thanks so much,
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Sounds like a great plan. Hope I can follow along. Such fun working with others and seeing aall the results
HI Lynn,
Glad to have you join in…
Blessings, Jeanne
How much of the lingerie stretch lace? Just the waist amount? I happen to have some tulle leftovers that would be nice to use up. And one of my goals for this year is to learn new sewing techniques while making things, so this sounds like it will help me out there. Thanks!
HI Christal,
Yes, you just need enough to go around your dolls waist, so half a yard would be plenty…but if you buy it, sometimes it only comes on a spool.
Thanks Christal,
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh, that sounds like fun, Jeanne! A Sew-along would be just the thing to give your blog something different and fun for all of us doll lovers! I may not participate when you show us, but it would be nice to print out the directions and do it when I have the time. Since I sew at my kitchen table, it has to be cleared off at dinnertime, and is not very convenient for me.
I already have netting on a roll, but would need to get the elastic lace. Any special kind of thread for this project? I’m guessing this project will also work for smaller dolls, since I have one that really needs a pretty new slip!! 😉
HI Linda,
Yes, you can print off the blog post and do it later if you like…I understand about you sewing at the table…and I don’t think you are alone…
I hope you can follow along with us if you “just pretend” to be making a slip.
Thanks Linda,
Blessings, Jeanne
Thank you so much for your kindness Jeanne in lining up a sew-a-long for us who follow you. I think it will be a wonderful addition to your many helpful hints. I used to sew bridal veils, so I have a lot of tulle left over. I knew I was saving it for some reason.
Thanks Lynn,
Once you make one slip and get it down, you can make ALL your girls new slips!!
Hope you have fun!
Blessings, Jeanne
Good Morning Jeanne
Oh what a super idea!! Thanks Norma for sparking the “sew along”. I can’t wait, it sounds like so much fun and my dollies will be thrilled too. I love your tutorials and thank you for sharing and giving of your time and ideas. I have never done a sew along so I am looking forward to this. Thanks Jeanne
HI Leigh,
I’m excited that you are excited to make a slip for your dolls. I hope you enjoy it!
Blessings, Jeanne
I love the idea of a slip sew-along! Thank you for offering…
HI Vicki,
I’m glad you are looking forward to making a doll slip!
Blessings, Jeanne
What a great idea! It’s going to give me incentive to clear off the dining room table and like Linda does and follow along. I’ve made one but would like to be more at ease with the process. Thanks, Norma, for the idea.
Thanks for participating Susette!
I hope you enjoy it this time!
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne.. sounds like fun!
As a winner of one of your gorgeous slips, seeing how beautifully it’s made, , I think this is a great idea. I’m in!
Thank you Shara,
I hope diva Saffi is enjoying her slip! I hope you enjoy making her another slip…
Blessings, Jeanne
I don’t sew as you know but I think your slips are beautiful. I love that cream colored slip as well as the white one with the blue stars and red circles.
Your idea is great for those who sew and it’ll be fun for all of you participators!
HI Paula,
Even if you don’t join in, I hope you enjoy seeing how it’s done!
Blessings, Jeanne
I really enjoy doing quilt-a-longs and seeing everyone’s progress and color choices so a sew-a-long sounds like a fun idea. I have tulle and stretch lace already. I haven’t done much sewing lately as I have a new dog who is a rescue and needs lots of my time, but maybe I can squeeze in some sewing!
I didn’t get to comment yesterday, but I really like Kirsten’s Prairie Rose ensemble, and I also enjoyed seeing everyone’s adorable pictures.
HI Carolyn,
Thanks for wanting to join in. I hope you can find time to follow along.
Congrats on your new dog too!
Thanks Carolyn,
Blessings, Jeanne
I am headed to Hobby Lobby today for my supplies! Thank you so much for sharing. I am not skilled or experienced so a two part lesson would be fine with me! This is a dream come true! Thank you, Jeanne!
HI Gail,
I’m glad you are excited to make a doll slip… I hope it turns out wonderfully and your dolls love it!
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh goody! Another trip to Joann’s. I’m sure there is something I might use here, but I’ll have to check out what is available anyway. And I’m thinking those cute embellishments too. Definitely needed a push to get back to my machine. Always something else to do that gets in the way it seems.
Thanks for doing this as it perfect timing. My new Bex (A Girl For All Time) is supposed to arrive sometime today. She is 16″ and deserves a slip I’m sure.
HI Joy,
You sound just like me…”I guess I’ll have to go to Joann”s for something…they’re having a sale, you know!”
I haven’t seen Bex…guess I better look her up and see what she looks like!
Thanks for joining in Joy,
Blessings, Jeanne
I’m so excited! I hope nothing gets in the way of my participating in this. I came to the blog after you did the slips and when I see them on things you post I think they are just beautiful and wished I knew how to make them. I’m good to go with all the supplies already. I have every color of tulle they make in both the wider size and some narrower I bought for smaller dolls. I have lingerie elastic, but I also have stretch lace and I really want to do the stretch lace. I’ll start getting my supplies together so I can make Gracie (my 18″ MA) a slip to go under her Christmas dress.
HI Barbara,
Well, it does sound like you are good to go. Glad you’ll be able to follow along with everyone doing this.
Hope you enjoy it…
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh fun! I’ll look for stretch elastic at Hobby Lobby…I forget they have sewing supplies too. Thanks for this great idea!
HI Kathie,
I’m glad you’ll be following along too. I hope everyone has fun.
Thanks Kathie,
Blessings, Jeanne
Bonjour Jeanne,
I Will follow this sew-a-long too for my Little Darling, as I do not have any American Doll.
Maybe one day I could find one in France !
Have a good week-end !
