I worked like crazy getting new pictures taken of Nyssa’s Bohemian dress and managed to get it listed on Ebay. You can see it by clicking the picture at the right side bar, or you can click HERE.
I tried to go outside and take some of my pictures but it was too windy and then the rain came… rats! She looked pretty in the outdoors! I salvaged a few pictures of her without her hair blowing across her face… this one was the best…
I had to move though… somehow I ended up on an ant hill… lovely, huh?
I changed up the lighting in my sewing room and got some fairly decent pictures of Nyssa. I had too much stuff on my cutting table to set up my light tent, but I plan to get my room in order and try it again…
I tried the lighting by my sewing machine first and the richness of the black fabric really came through in this picture.
Then I moved her back to my cutting table and worked on the lighting over there…
Okay, that’s enough on Nyssa… you can see more pictures in the Ebay listing… HERE… if you missed it above…
I have a couple of pictures from a few readers… Joy sent me a picture of her “monkeys”…she called them that… not me! It’s her grandkids putting on a show for her! :o)
Marilyn sent a picture of a doll she shares with someone…the doll is named Anneke and she’s an expensive Wendy Lawton doll that came with 4 outfits. Marilyn asked for her friend to be the one who would provide the house space for her so Anneke lives in a glass box. The crockery in the picture was just recently purchased. Isn’t it a very pretty setting? Marilyn said this is the Glove Wedding doll, and in addition to her outfits, she has a wooden case containing an embroidered leather glove. I don’t know anything about Wendy Lawton dolls, but I’m guessing Marilyn has done her research and knows a great deal about them.
Marilyn also sent along some information about a new Masterpiece Theatre thriller that involves a wife with a doll house set in Amsterdam in 1686, still during Anneke’s lifetime. The first episode is the only one out yet and the set and costumes are quite lovely
See below for a link to a show from the same time period.
Well, I still have some time before I “should” go to bed, so I’m going to go see what I can figure out for Noel.. she’s my little 10″ Boneka doll and she’ll be up next!
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Hi Jeaane, looks like I’m first again tonight! I enjoyed seeing the pictures of Nyssa; the outdoor one and the one below it were, I thought, best as far as lighting goes, but then, I’m not an expert at those things! I’m sorry about the anthill, though!!
I guess, Joy’s grands are little “monkeys”! My son and grands were never climbers like that, but I gues some kids just are. (I certainly wasn’t; heights bother me!)
I also have a Wendy Lawton doll, but I couldn’t tell you offhand which one, as she’s lived in her box almost since she first got here, poor thing! They are (or at least mine is) made of porcelain (head and hands, maybe feet, don’t remember) and wood (body, jointed). I got mine with the idea of sewing for her, but that hasn’t happened yet. I’ve probably had her for almost 20 years. Poor little dear is neglected!
Nyla (my little Boneka) is quite excited that your Noel will be next on the list! Even though I had her undressed and was measuring her and picking out fabrics today for a new dress, she still wants to see what “Aunt Jeanne” is going to make…for HER?! LOL (Well, she might get a new dress faster that way, at the rate I’m going!)
HI Charlotte,
Yes, you are first again… you are certainly an early bird or a late night owl… I don’t know which to call you! :o)
the outdoor pictures would have been great to use if only the weather had cooperated!
I’m going to have to look up Wendy Lawton dolls… I believe I used to have a catalog that had her dolls in it, but I didn’t know anything about her so I passed over them… I guess I better “educate” myself and have a look.
I was looking at fabrics late last night too! I haven’t quite decided but I’m getting close… Maybe I should put it up for a vote like I did before.
“Aunt Jeanne” would be thrilled to “dress” your dolls… but don’t tell your girls that! :o)
Thanks Charlotte,
Blessings, Jeanne
I’m a night owl, Jeanne–and on Pacific time, so 2-3 hours behind you!
Windy and rainy yesterday, Jeanne? It was just plain hot and humid here! You needed to come over this way to take outside pictures, but I don’t think you would have been too comfortable here either! At least you tired, and you did get a good one in. I still love that outfit! How tall is Nyssa, anyway?
Wow, Joy’s grandkids sure look energetic! All those toys in the background, and there they are climbing the walls! Cute!
Marilyn’s doll is beautiful, and how generous of her to let her friend keep her. I love the tablecloth and crockery, which add to the interest. Lovely!
Was wondering is Charlotte still up at 2:30 in the morning, or did she just get up?
Hi Linda,
I sure could have used someone’s pretty yard for my pictures. We don’t have any flowers blooming right now except for the Rose of Sharon and they are way up high.. I need a little cutsie place on the ground that I can use to take pictures by. I’m sure your yard would have been lovely to use! :o)
Nyssa is 17″ tall and yes, we had wind and rain (and ants!) oh…and humidity too!!!
I just asked Charlotte about that too… I think she stays up late!
Thanks Linda,
Blessings, Jeanne
Joy’s “little monkeys” are adorable and can they ever climb!” What two little cuties.
Marilyn’s doll is beautiful. I too like the display in the glass case. The material used on the table and the pitchers are perfect in color for the doll. I don’t believe I’ve ever seen a Wendy Lawton doll and will have to look her up.
Looks like Nyssa’s outfit is ready to go. It turned out beautifully and the two hats are a plus!
Thanks Paula,
I think Joy’s grandkids could enter a pole climbing contest and come out the winner! :o)
We are both going to have to look up Wendy Lawton dolls… Marilyn’s doll is beautiful.. .I agree…
Nyssa’s outfit didn’t get seen by too many as I woke up this morning and my phone dinged and boom… it was sold! I guess that’s a good thing… :o) I’m sure it is! :o)
Thanks Paula,
Blessings, Jeanne
Love Nyssa’s photos. I’m so glad you included one of both hats showing the crowns. They are quite amazing. And poor Nyssa. So sorry she had to experience the ants. Last time I did an outdoor photo, when I brought my girls inside, I had to pull a ton of stickers out of their hair. But better seeds than ants. 🙂
How big is Anneke, Marilyn? Lovely doll and the setting perfect for her.
First time I saw our grands climbing the door frames, I was taken aback. But, as their mom said, they are both strong, and it is a game. They climb the door frames and at the top, hit the jingle bells hanging from the frame and then slide back down. Funny, but three year old Bowen looks exactly like other person did at the same age. He once climbed to the top of the family sedan (1950’s, big cars) and danced around until he slid off and broke his arm. 🙁 Must be in the genes.
Looking forward to seeing Noel’s new outfit. She is such a cutie.
HI Joy,
It wasn’t Nyssa that the ants got…it was ME! She was on a bench and I was on my knees… guess who they came for first?
Poor Nyssa is sulking because her dress sold at 8:30 this morning and I had to strip it off her to get it in the mail… She’s mad at me I think… I told her we’d make another one… 🙂
I hope your grandkids stay safer than your hubby did… ouch! That must have hurt!
I’ve got to figure out a fabric for Noel’s dress. I was trying to match the fabric to some Ultrasuede so I could make her a pair of shoes to go with it.
Thanks Joy,
Blessings, Jeanne
Great pictures of “the monkeys.” Thanks for sharing. I’m glad the light box will be coming out. It should help with the shadows on faces in the pictures.
What a lovely doll. The fabric on the table rang a bell. I reupholstered some stools for my son’s family in that pattern from Hobby Lobby. I wish I had some to make a tablecloth for the American Girl doll tables. Thanks, Marilyn, for sharing the picture of this interesting doll.
Hi Susette,
One of those days those kids are going to be embarrassed when a future boyfriend or girlfriend sees them climbing! I think it’s an adorable picture though…. :o)
I am trying to figure out a different way to use the light tent… well not a different way.. a different place… I have cool lights above but they shine “down” on my dolls an that’s what makes those shadows I think…
How funny that you have used the exact same fabric for yourself… It’s a very pretty design and the colors are wonderful!
I think Anneke must be smiling inside today as she’s gotten all these compliments! :o)
Thanks Susette,
Blessings, Jeanne
You got good results showing the deepness of the black fabric in the pictures…I just can’t take my eyes off those hats. They are so pretty. Is there a pattern for them somewhere?
Nyssa is so freaky cute in that dress..it really matches her personality.
Good luck with that Auction!
Marilyn’s Wendy Lawton doll is beautiful and the setting is georgeous. Those two cute wall climbers are so strong! Anything that gets kids away from the TV and video games is OK with me…those muscles will keep them moving no matter what.
HI Kathie,
Thanks for the compliments on my hats.. The pattern for the hat comes in the pattern with the Bohemian dress. It’s a 7 gore hat and it fits Nyssa really well!
I think her dress is one of my favorites now… She does look pretty sweet in it… Well, she DID look sweet in it.. It sold at 8:30 this morning using the Buy It Now! I had no idea it would sell so quickly. It’s good for me though… I’m trying to get Navi paid off this month…
Glad you enjoyed the wall climbers and the Marilyn’s doll… both were very interesting to look at! :o)
Thanks Kathie,
Blessings, Jeanne
Dear Jeanne, I saw the Miniaturist. It was scary and intriguing at the same time. I don’t know how many episodes there are. Marilyn, what did you think?
I love the little climbers. I always love Joy’s references to the “other person.”
I like the expression on Anneke’s face.
Nyssa is stunning.
I know some folks are off at the Modern Doll convention this week. I will be off to UFDC Region 11 convention next week. Dolly bliss!!!
HI Dorothy,
How fun that you get to go to a doll convention! I hope you have fun…which is probably a dumb thing to say, because we know you WILL!
I might have to look at the first episode of the Miniaturist… just to see what it’s like…
Nyssa isn’t stunning anymore…she is sulking… her dress sold early this morning and she’s been robbed of her dress and her wig… she’s back in her box… bald headed and laying next to a bald headed Hope!
Thanks Dorothy,
Blessings, Jeanne
Wow, somebody really wanted Nyssa’s dress!! Congrats on a quick, easy sale. I did the same thing with a couple of the more difficult to find Felicity sets (Plantation Play NIB was one). If they were an auction I contacted the seller and offered a price and when they accepted they reserved it for me.
Joy’s “monkeys” are really cute. i can see why she calls them that, since they are literally climbing the walls.
Marilyn’s doll is lovely. How generous that she let’s her friend keep her. The pitcher look very era appropriate for her “The MIniturist” looks intriguing. I’m always looking for period dramas to watch
HI Laura,
Yes, someone wanted Nyssa’s dress very much! Right when I got up this morning, my phone dinged and I looked at it and sure enough, the dress was sold! I felt kind of bad, because my post was about it… but I got over it pretty quickly! I’m trying to pay off Navi this month and this will certainly help! glad you had success with your Felicity sets!!
I like the smiles on the “monkeys” faces best! They look like they are having a blast!
I think we all might have to take a look at the Miniaturist and see what it’s all about!
Thanks Laura,
Blessings, Jeanne
Congratulations on your nearly instant sale of Nyssa’s beautiful dress. I think there should be another one soon on any doll you like. With Halloween coming, this style might work especially well for people who like charming Halloween costumes.
I am sorry about the ants — I was afraid it was you since there are no ants in the photo.
The “monkeys” look happy, strong, and well coordinated. We may be looking at future Olympians.
Many thanks for all the compliments on Anneke. I’ll ask Nikki if she has pictures of the clothes, which are especially nice. A glove wedding was a marriage by proxy. There were Dutch plantation owners in Indonesia, but not a lot of marriageable Dutch women. Agents for the owners would search for young women of good but no longer wealthy families and arrange marriages. The party in Indonesia would send a beautifully decorated glove to the Netherlands to represent the groom. The young woman would accept the glove and marry the groom by proxy, then sail to Indonesia as a respectable married woman. When I was in high school, I found a book called The Scent of Cloves, about a young orphaned woman who made a glove marriage — naturally the results were not to be desired. Naturally I hope for a much better life for Anneke.
I haven’t been able to find a good article on glove weddings/marriages, though I’ve seen some. I did find a reference to a Dutch proxy marriage as late as 1927.
The wooden parts of Lawton dolls are quite unfinished. See https://www.ebay.com/itm/Wendy-Lawtons-The-Merry-Widow-in-Three-Acts-1997-Special-Edition-Original-Boxes/183438448804?hash=item2ab5c898a4:g:NgcAAOSw8JZblDCx for another of my favorite Lawton dolls, the Merry Widow, to get an idea of how they look. I’m not terribly fond of many Lawton faces, but I like Anneke and Sonja/Anna. The face of the doll pictured looks a lot like the actress who originated the role. I have some good pictures of Anna/Sonja, but don’t intend to buy her unless I somehow acquire a bigger house.
I had a friend my mother’s age whose mother was a young widow during WWI. On the train from Chicago to St. Charles, she met a young officer who had stayed in Chicago because friends were determined that he would see The Merry Widow. He met
Nina, a lovely young widow, and was instantly in love. He called her Sonja, after the Merry Widow in the version he had seen, and married her. He was the sort of man who knew quickly what he wanted and went after it.
