What is the most useful thing you own?

Happy Memorial Day to you all… I hope you had lots of picnics and adventures on the weekend…or maybe they are today…

I had no idea how long my hubby would be in the hospital so I came up with a series of questions just to keep things lively on here. If you are new on here and leave a comment below, I’m sure SOMEONE will notice it! I have the kindest readers and there are no wrong or stupid answers!

These “question” posts were written before I left home, and I’m guessing I’m still gone… you can see any updates on my hubby below in the comments.

This is a great question to start the week off… “What is the most useful thing you own?” I can’t wait to see your answers! :o)

I’ll check in when I can,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. If the question covers all things, my most used and useful thing is my label maker. It makes my life so much easier in finding things. I even use it in the sewing room! If it’s only sewing, I find my seam ripper most used. I’m still a relative newcomer!!

    1. Charlotte Trayer

I’ve been sewing for over 60 years, and *I* couldn’t get along without my seam ripper, either!

  2. Hi Jeanne,

I’ve been absent here, but am so glad to have read how things have gone for you and George at the hospital. I’m sure that the hospital smells are something that you won’t forget. Home will feel soooo good when you get back there. From my own sense as well as experience and what I’ve read, I can’t think of a better place for you to be than beside George at this time, despite the fact of the challenges.

My most useful items are clothespins, wooden clothespins. I hang up the laundry outside all the time in good weather with clothespins (wooden racks in winter in basement near woodburner)…I use them in the house to hold things together, hold things up. Take other things from me, but, not my clothespins!

Blessings and thoughts and prayers for safety and healthy recovery for George and you.

    1. Becky, I’m glad to know I’m not the only one who uses a clothesline. I don’t always hang all the laundry outdoors, but The sheets are always hung outside. I love they way they smell after being dried outside in the sunshine. I’m sure my neighbors think I’m a little crazy!

  3. Jeanne, I am so grateful to have found your comment on George in the last day’s blog. Thank you so much for the optimistic update! Prayers for you both will continue.

My most useful thing? My sewing machine! I even took it to our time share week this month so I would have something to do while my dear Peyton takes his daily nap, or while we were just hanging out in the condo. Consequently, the living area there soon began to look a lot like home, with fabric scraps and thread everywhere, LOL! Fortunately, he is not a neat freak!

    God bless you, dear Jeanne!

  4. My computer, of course, is the most useful thing I own. I simply love how I can solve so many problems, locate an obscure antique, or the best, shop! I’m sure there are hundreds of more useful things, like scissors or scotch tape, but I really have enjoyed the freedom and fun of having a computer not far away. It is so fun to post photos of dollies and share things with people around the world.
Hope George is getting grumpy because, you know that means he is on that road to recovery. A few more days, and hopefully, you will be on an actual road and heading home. Were you able to meet up with Linda? Hope so. How fun.
Happy Day to you and George.

  5. I missed commenting yesterday, so I’ll share my oldest friend: We met in England at Burtonwood RAF Station High School for dependents of military and civilian Americans stationed with USAF in 1956-58. We lost touch after coming back the The States but one of the alumni got us in touch with each other 42 years later in 2000 using the internet, not an easy task as most of the girls had married and had changed last names. She lives in Northern Michigan and had (Surprise) ten children, four sets of twins and two singletons! Of all the people I’ve ever met, I believe she is probably the only one who could have handled that. I finally met her in person last year when she visited one of her sons here in California. What a wonderful reunion! It was always like we had just visited the day before but it was always by email until then.

Thanks for the reminding us of our friends, Jeanne. Thinking of you and George and your family.

  6. So glad to hear off George’s progress. God is good. Trust in Him.
My most useful “thing” is my husband. He is so ready to be of service. He helps with dishes, comforts me when I need it, rubs my feet after a long day at school, does the heavy work in turning over the soil in my garden areas, and is truly the spiritual head of our home. I could have married no better.

  7. I would say my computer because it brings me the rest of the world. It also beings all of you to me too!
I’m glad George is on the mend. It sounds like you have a good relationship with the Dr. That is so important. Hope you can keep getting more rest.
    Take care. –

  8. Jeanne, I’m having problems posting anything on your blog, so I am trying again!
I am having brain freeze about what is my most useful thing! If I think of something, I will post it later.
But I do want to say that I was completely thrilled to meet you in person, and also your wonderful hubby, and handsome son, plus his sweet girlfriend yesterday! You were exactly like I thought you were, although, I must say you are 10 times prettier in person, compared to pictures! We had a wonderful time visiting with all of you,and even Michael said what nice people you were!
I know you are both anxious to get home, and hope that happens soon! We should try to meet up at a place that is more fun!?

  9. The first thing that came to mind today is a pair of scissors…maybe because I was in my sewing room! I have several different pair for cutting fabric, snipping threads, cutting paper patterns, etc. In my office I have a pair for mail, packages, etc., and in my living room I keep scissors for snipping yarn when I’m knitting. The kitchen has scissors in three different places, with one pair in a drawer by the door to the deck…these are for snipping herbs that are growing now. I also have scissors in my bedroom for cutting tags off new clothes, etc., and of course scissors in the bathroom for different grooming needs. And since I also groom my dogs, I have a couple of different kind of scissors in the basement where I work on their needs. I can’t think of any other tool of which that I have so many different kinds and styles.

Best of luck to you and your husband….

  10. Hi everyone,
I was thrilled too, to get to meet Linda and her hubby yeaterday. When I saw Linda at the door of my hubby’s hospital room, I knew it was her and we hugged and then it was chatter the whole time. We never talked about dolls but other stuff and it was wonderful. She even brought some little brownie bites decorated in red white and blue icing… they were yummy and I shared them with some of the nurses!!!
It was so fun to put a face and a voice on someone who, up until then, was a stranger to me. I think we’ll be friends for a long time. Oh how I wish I could meet everyone on here.
Her compliments were a little overboard, so I’ll reciprocate…and this is the truth….Linda has the most beautiful blue eyes and the sweetest, kindest voice and I’m sure the most gentle spirit you could imagine.
Her nephew was graduating from high school, and my pastor who was up here quite a bit, was going to his nephews graduation…you won’t believe this, but the boys are friends!!! How cool is that???
The dr just came in and I think we might get to go home tomorrow. They are changing his diet to liquids today and if things are tolerated well, he can probably start packing his bags…well…”I” can start packing his bags for home.
He is still hurting, but it’s getting better. The dr said he’s been like a model patient!!! I don’t think my hubby feels quite that way, but I know all the prayers and encouragement had a lot to do with it. We come back in about 10 days or so…for a checkup and the pathology report.
Thank you for all your wonderful answers to my sometimes silly questions…I just didn’t want to leave you without any posts while we were gone. I’ve read them all and love getting to know you better.
I FINALLY got some sleep last night and it was heavenly!!
Thank you everyone…even on my scariest days, just seeing your names and comments grounded me and made me realize we weren’t in this all by ourselves!
    Love you,
    Jeanne

  11. Hi Jeanne
I am so glad to hear of George’s improvement – just hearing your going home is the most wonderful medicine.
Hard choice between my husband and my computer. My husband is very helpful in so many ways but he doesn’t do bookkeeping; banking; Pinterest; network with family, friends and this blog. But then again, he doesn’t just stop working for no apparent reason either.
The computer can’t fix the car; appliances; furnace; mow the lawn etc. It also can’t be my best friend, support me when I am sick and lonely or console me over the loss of a loved one. So, I would say hands down my husband but then I read your question again and you said …”the most useful thing you own” so that would be the computer! Boy, did I get off track or what?
Well, Happy Memorial Day to all and wishing you quick, safe travels home.

  12. Hip Hip Hooray! Home is on the way! What wonderful news. If all goes well, and George is released, please tell him he must take it easy because the transfer from hospital to home can be very tiring. Just go slow and read through all of the accumulation of paperwork. Lots of rest for both of you. And tell Reuben no jumping!
Fabulous that you were able to connect with Linda. Now she will have to come to Carbondale. Maybe a trip to Kentucky to visit fabric stores and antique places is in order too.
I’m so happy for you and George.
    Cheers

  13. Wow, good news on George’s progress. God is so good! I’m enjoying everyone’s comments, but don’t really know if I can come up with only one answer. I guess the computer is truly the most useful thing I have if I can include my phone with that. I can google everything, put my grocery list one the phone, and use the navigator to find out of the way locations. I am the most absent-minded person, and I use One Note to record reminders for myself.
I’m so glad you got to meet Linda today. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could all meet?

    Hi Jeanne,

Oh, that is good to hear, even the Possibility of George going home! The light at the end of this particular little tunnel, anyway. I’m so glad you had a better night’s sleep last night, too–that in itself is worth a great deal! And getting to meet Linda was, I’m sure, a real boost for you both.

Now, as to my most useful thing I own: Well, like Leigh, I was going to say my husband–he has kept our natural gas dryer going for about 50 years now (it was original to the house, built in 1968, 6 years before I knew him), and he also kept the original furnace going for over 45 years. We finally replaced it a few years ago–not because we Had to (it still worked) but because we thought it would be prudent to replace it when we WANTED to, not waiting until it quit and it was freezing out and we’d have to be without heat for three days! It gave us time to check around and get one from a place where they “spoke his language” (Ron worked for Wash. Natural Gas, repairing natural gas equipment, for many years, and the owner of the company had also done nat. gas repair work before he started his company; they are both ex-Marines, too!), and the installer was a gregarious man who actually was thrilled the Ron wanted to be down there with him, as he liked to visit while he worked! (And Ron was thrilled as he got to help him a little here and there!). He is also pretty handy for opening jars and things!

But, I don’t “own” Ron….so I guess the most useful thing I OWN is a pen/pencil and paper! I write lots of notes to myself, shopping lists, etc., as well as being one who enjoys writing letters. I have a sewing journal that I write notes in about certain projects I’m working on, and a daily journal that I write in, too.

Take care, dear Jeanne. Prayers continue.

  15. Wonderful news about your George and hope he comes home today. Quick recovery and hope it stays that way.

My most useful thing is my coffee grinder. I grind my owns beans twice a day and I would be lost without it. That has happened a few times over the years when one decides it can’t take it anymore. Nothing is better than opening the jar and the aroma of those beans and the coffee is three times better than purchased ground coffee. Plus there are so many varieties to pick from.

  16. So glad to hear you and George will be going home. Home can really be the healing place- home is where the heart is.
My most useful item has and always will be my “ things to do” tablet and pen. It’s been that way since I was a young girl. Takes a load off of my mind at times and keeps me so organized. Many other notebooks have been born from my “to do list”. Like, Christmas and birthday ideas. Family heirloom record notebook, etc.
loved reading about everyone else’s most useful thing.
