Thank you so much to my new subscribers who have joined in on the fun around here! I haven’t been writing posts like I usually do and yet, I am still getting new readers who are sticking around. I just wanted to say thank you to them!!! :o)
It’s been a few days since I showed you what we’ve been up to in the kitchen… so here’s a quick update.
We wanted to finish off the ends of our cabinets but was hoping we had something in my hubby’s stash of wood that might work. As we dug around in the bigger pieces, we found a piece of real wood beadboard and hoped it might be the right thickness… 3/8″ and it was! We measured and then “measured again” as this is the best way to insure it fits if your house is over 125 years old. (You know those crooked walls and all…) Well, I’m pleased to tell you we got it…
Our beadboard wasn’t the prettiest thing. I remember we found it in the clearance pile at Menards quite a while ago and for $6.00 we decided it could surely be used for something. I’m not sure what was on it besides boot prints, but some kind of blackish green marks. It looks like it has water marks all over it in my pictures, but in person it doesn’t seem to look like that… it’s very nice wood and we were very happy to have used it up. The end panel (or skin, as they call them) for the pantry could be bought at the place where I got my unfinished cabinets, but it was $51.00, and the 2 end skins for the upper cabinets were $12 a piece. We managed to use a $6.00 piece of dirty beadboard instead of paying $75.00 for theirs! Woohoo!
I used Kristoffer’s orbital sander and got the majority of the spots off. Once it’s primed 2x and then painted 2 coats, it will be just like new…
Here’s a shot of my pantry using it…
This is it in a full shot…
We also cut 2 other pieces… one for the end of the cabinet on the frig wall…
…and one piece for the end of the upper cabinet just to the right of my sink…
I have my long boards primed and painted and ready to be cut and put up around the door and window… I can’t wait for this part to be done!
One of these days all my kitchen things will be in the kitchen and everything else will be where it’s supposed to be….”someday!”
…and my sister, Cindy, found some knobs for my cabinets at her Mission… they are supposed to be here on Friday! YAY CINDY! Brand new and .50 cents a piece!!! I saw a listing on Ebay and also saw where they were sold at Home Depot… here’s what they look like… I can’t wait for them either.
Oil Rubbed Bronze Cabinet knobs
They are expensive if you buy them from Home Depot or even on Ebay… I was very blessed that she found them. I’ll have to buy some handles or pulls to match…or watch for another bargain somewhere… I’m good at that! :o)
We just found out that Friday we have to make a quick trip up to St. Louis for my hubby’s upcoming surgery! A visit with the pre-op department and the stoma nurse and the anesthesiologist all together…somehow we sort of got overlooked so they had to scramble to find us an appointment quickly. UGH! Things are starting to get even busier around here, so I’ll try to hang out with you if I can… otherwise…
I’ll see you when I can,
Blessings, Jeanne
Sorry to hear you got overlooked but hope your appointment went well today with no hitches.
Wow, you really have made quite a bit of progress and your kitchen is looking soooo good.
I am partial to the oil rubbed bronze knobs and fixtures as well. I have repainted quite a few hall light fixtures with the Rustoleum oil rubbed bronze and they turned out great.
Wishing you all a wonderful weekend.
Thank you Leigh,
All did go fairly well in St. Louis today…we are on the way home now…
Thanks for the compliments on the kitchen so far. I painted some bathroom hardware oil rubbed bronze and really liked it. I can’t wait to see my new knobs when I get home.
I hope you have a wonderful weekend too.
Thanks Leigh,
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, Ididn’tknowyou hadavlogtoday! Itdidn’t Come in my email, like it usually does. So you came to town today. Kind of a dreary day, wasn’tit? We do need the rain though, and I hope things went well.
I love the knobs you have picked out, I think that the oil rubbed bronze will look striking against your white cabinets! Are you getting pulls for the drawers?
Are you or any other ladies here going to be up watching the wedding tomorrow? I’ll be watching for sure! I get up early anyway, so it won’t be different for me! Our coverage starts at 3:30 a.m. so I’ll be having coffee and toast then!
Hi Linda,
Yes, we came to your neck of the woods today…I even Googled your address to see how close you were…I saw your house and yard…PRETTY!!! I just wondered how close we were to meeting…too far I think…:o(
I think my new knobs will be really nice…just as we pulled in the driveway, the UPS truck pulled in our driveway behind us…the knobs are going to be just fine. George wants to put the knobs on before I paint the cabinets so we’ll see…
It poured on us all the way up there and when we left it was just sprinklong, but about 10 minutes down the road we got pelted again pretty hard.
If I wake up, I’ll get up and watch it, but if not, I’ll let you fill me in with the details…:o)
Thanks Linda,
I think others might not have gotten my post today…I was getting worried that no one was going to make any comments….but I see a few have seen it now.
Thanks so much,
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh my gosh, that first sentence!!! It’s the iPad’s fault!
:o)
Hope you are home safe. What a big day you had. A long drive, a triple appointment and a long drive back.
At least you had lots of time to discuss the day.
Kitchen is looking better and better. I love how mellow it looks right now. I’m not a fan of gleaming clinical looking white kitchens.
Your bench top (counter?) faucet and Chandi all help saver you from that.
Sleep well tonight. Big adventures ahead.
Hugs and prayers.
Hi Jane,
We are safe back home now…it was a long day but we got several things taken care of and lots of questions answered.
I’m hoping my kitchen doesn’t look too sterile…I picked a white paint that wasn’t too stark… I’ve already painted the boards for my trim and I’m very happy with the color.
I hope you try something fun with your new savory pan. Put in a piece of meat, some olive oil if you like that, some cooking wine if you like that, some onions, some spices, potatoes, veggies, mushrooms…just have fun… I hope you enjoy it!!
Blessings, Jeanne
My iPad wrote saver.
My savory has been delivered. I will pick it up Monday, yay.
I wish I would have known you were in St. Louis yesterday. I was there too. Would have come to see you. You are in my prayers!!
Quite a day you had. So glad they caught that appointment in time. I think it’s reassuring to meet the people who will be taking care of you before the surgery. That’s a good change from years ago.
May I make a suggestion? The knobs were the last thing to go on when my kitchen was renovated so the cabinet finish is complete under the knobs. Hard to do with them in place. Maybe drill the holes but put them on after the paint dries. Nothing like suggestions from the Peanut Gallery.
Here on the West Coast, I woke up and turned the TV on just as the car door was opening for Meghan. Nobody does it better than the Brits. Love the hats!
Hi Susette,
It WAS reassuring to meet some of the people yesterday. We felt better but some of the things he was supposed to do to get ready was already 2 days behind because nobody had called us. It will all work out…
Oh, I wasn’t going to leave the knobs on while I painted them…George just wanted to put them on now so we don’t get so many fingerprints and dirt on the bare wood. He was going to take them off before I painted them. The knobs are just to use for now…
I zonked out last night so I didn’t get up in time to see the wedding, but I’ve been catching the coverage on TV this morning. What a pretty bride!!
Thanks Susette,
Blessings, Jeanne
No post from Jeanne yesterday, but arrived this morning, Saturday. I feel like I’m reading backwards in a time warp.
Wow, that was a quick trip to St. Louis. I still believe that those schedule people need to be prompted regularly. Just anxious me. Glad everything went well.
Didn’t get up in time for the wedding, but have already looked at the key photos, and I’m sure highlights will come my way later today. Did anyone catch that chartreuse number and hat with the purple trim worn by the Queen? And little Princess Charlotte was lovely in her simple white dress and flower wreath.
Great choice on the cabinet knobs. One less thing to worry about finger smudges. We have white. 🙁 Can’t wait to see them installed because they appear to be the perfect match with the vintage and modern look. Your beadboard end panels have finished off the cabinets so well. Everything looks great. Now for some paint and “wow”.
Please keep us informed about the surgery. Will anyone be going along with you to St. Louis? Staying in a hotel or will you be going back and forth? We will all be here supporting you. Thoughts with you always.
Hi Joy,
I don’t know what happened with yesterday’s post…some got it, some didn’t. ..hmmm…
We told the nurse practioner of the slight mix up in not being called…the hospital is being added onto, but that really shouldn’t have been an issue. If we hadn’t called and gotten that appointment, we would have missued some crucial information about his surgery…I guess it’s ok now, but it wouldn’t have been if we hadn’t called…
I did see the queen in her chartreuse dress and thought she looked very pretty in that color. Charlotte was adorable…especially the,way she waved!! :o)
I got the 2 end panels that go whete the hood vent will be painted and primed and George wants to get them up tomorrow. I can’t wait to see my paint color next to my original shiplap…so far, I love the color and,my knobs look pretty sweet next to those panrks…slowly it’s getting done.
St Louis is 2 hours away so I’ll be staying there the whole time…anywhere from 5 to 7 days…they told me yesterday George will have a private room so I can stay with him…we’re planning on that. But we are going up on Wednesday because he has,to be at the hospital at 6a.m. on Thursday morning and we didn’t want to take any chances of not making it there for some reason…
Kristoffer is coming up on Thursday, and some good friends are coming up on Thursday morning, then our pastor said he’d be there in the afternoon and evening when he wakes up..the surgery is 6-8 hours so it will be a long day of waiting…
I will try to keep things posted when I can…
Thanks Joy,
Blessings, Jeanne
Thoughts and prayers…and thank YOU, Jeanne, for staying in touch with US…you’re a blessing to me…hope your sleep can stay up with the demands of the days….kitchen is looking fabulous.
Blessings.
Thank you Becky,
Yes…sleep…I could use more of it, but George has been letting me sleep in a little bit longer each day. I’m managing…
George wants to get a few more things done on the kitchen before his surgery. I did my first painting on the cabinet sides and can’t wait to see them up and see what the color looks like in there.
Thanks for your prayers Becky,
It’s hard not to be anxious….my hubby is much better at it than me, OR he’s really good at hiding it!!! :o)
Blessings, Jeanne
Hi Jeanne, I’m another one who didn’t get your post until this morning. At first I thought maybe I’d missed seeing it–yesterday (the 18th) was our 44th wedding anniversary, and I was kind of tired by the time I got thru all my emails last night. But then I looked, and, no, it didn’t come thru until 2:04 a.m. 5/19.
Anyway, your kitchen just keeps looking better and better!! Hasn’t it been nice to have such a pleasant “distraction” while waiting to hear about George’s surgery?!
And now he has a date and time; thanks for letting us know, so we can pray specifically. I hope you (or maybe a family member) will be able to update us while you’re in St. Louis, but whether or not you can, you can rest assured that I will be among your many friends who will be lifting both of you (as well as the doctors, etc.) up in prayer.
Hi Charlotte,
The different times my last post was delivered truly is a mystery to me…hmmmm…strange.
Happy Anniversary, Charlotte! ! Congratulations on 44 years!! Wow that’s wonderful! !! I hope you had a good day.
I was telling someone this morning…it has been kind of nice having the kitchen as a distraction…it really has.
I will try to keep things updated on the post on Thursday and thank you very much Charlotte! !! We really appreciate your prayers!!!
Blessings, Jeanne
I looked the knobs up on ebay and think you’ve made a great choice. The color will add contrast in spring and summer and warmth in fall and winter. I really like the beadboard too. It carries the ceiling texture down into the room, and using something you is environmentally sound as well as economical. Everything you do keeps working for you.
Your weather sounds like ours — every couple of hours the prediction changes, but at least we are having bouts of rain. 4 years ago we had 4 days of steady day and night rain accompanied by floods. So far we are ok, and no rain is predicted for this week — at least for now. Tomorrow that may change.
I hope this is a really good week for you.
HI Marilyn,
I’m thinking the knobs will be a nice contrast to the white cabinets too! Cindy said the same thing too…so they have to be right! :o) It does seem like things are working out in my kitchen… yay1
We had rain today, and are supposed to have it for the next 5 days I think! Everything is soaked around here.
I’m sure “MY’ week is going to be better than my hubby’s! :o(
I’m ready for it to be Tuesday of next week…then it will all be over, well except waiting again for the pathology report…ugh!
Thanks Marilyn,
Blessings, Jeanne
