I’m sorry I didn’t get your comments answered yesterday. I had to take care of some momma things and I got behind… thanks for all you shared though. I love to read your comments!
Marilyn, remind me and I WILL show you my Savory pan… it’s from my hubby’s mom.
Charlotte, my kitchen IS looking better each day… every time something ugly gets covered up, it makes me smile!
Linda, I doubt I’d get an A+ from you when you see today’s part about the floor!
Leigh, I know lots of people who gut their entire kitchen and are out of commission for the whole time theirs is being remodeled. I’m glad we decided to do it a little section at a time… It’s been kind of a mess, but not too terrible.
Joy, the stove picture was JUST for you! I laughed at your mummy critter too! I’m looking forward to not having water dripped across my floor as I will be able to load things right into the dishwasher and no more getting the cruddies out of the sink drain basket.
Paula, I am very anxious to get my things in that pantry! It’s going to be wonderful I think!
Debi, I had to laugh at your mention of knowing more about my family than your own! I’m glad you are enjoying the remodeling posts!
Carolyn, my hubby has already disassembled the lazy susan, sorry…but I’ve got a new one that will be better…and much cleaner!
Susette, I’m glad you liked studying Elizabeth’s lace on her dress… only a true seamstress would do that! ;o)
Anne, thanks for the quote, “Hope is the beautiful place between the way things are and the way things are yet to be” and the term “pretty in progress!” They give me hope that my kitchen IS going to be beautiful some day! :o)
Laura, I know what you mean about the bizarre weather… I saw 2 convertibles in town day before yesterday and this morning it was spitting snow! Spring, where ARE you?
(I don’t even want to tell you this, but I have too!)
The other day my hubby got a text on his phone. This is what I heard him say to me…”It’s St. Louis and my appointment is Thursday at 11:40. They said to text YES if that’s okay, should I?” I said of course!! So we went our separate ways and not really thinking he wanted to talk about it, nothing was said of it until today. Our conversation went like this today:
He started… “Honey, don’t forget your dentist appointment on Thursday. It’s at 11:40.”
I said, “I can’t go…remember we’re going to St. Louis. I was going to cancel them this morning, but I had to take care of things with momma.”
He said, “What appointment in St. Louis?”
I said, “The one you got the text about the other day…”
He said, “St. Louis never texted me… your dentist did!”
I’ll spare you the rest of the conversation… but I must be stressing or sleep deprived or over worked, or ALL OF THE ABOVE… because I have been making plans for Thursday’s visit to St. Louis ever since that text. I was POSITIVE he said it was St. Louis. Ugh!
Anyway, I’m having to eat crow now and let you know there is NO appointment on Thursday, but if you’d like to pray for me at the dentist, I wouldn’t mind! Sorry…I feel like a fool having to tell you this. Maybe someday I should ask the question… what was your biggest goof up! :o)
Well that was the “Confessions” part… and since you’re already here, how about a little more from the kitchen…here’s the “jigsaw” part:
It’s slow going right now, with things that don’t show, but have to be done… I had to cut 2 slivers of flooring to fill in next to the walls around the back door. It was pretty tedious because they were only about 1″ slivers and about 18-24″ long. They had to shaved off with a utility knife and I didn’t want to goof them up. We only had a few scraps left.
The cabinets have to set evenly on the floors against the walls and when we put down our flooring, knowing that we were going to get new cabinets sometime, we just cut the flooring and butted it against the fronts of the old cabinets. We wanted to tuck the flooring underneath the new cabinets so we had to extend the planks just a little bit if we could.
When we got most of the planks where they needed to be, we looked at our pile of scraps and decided to fill in the areas under the cabinets where the plywood boxes set. We certainly wouldn’t get an A+ on this job, but it will NEVER be seen by anyone, EXCEPT YOU ALL…It just needed to be level where the base cabinets will sit. From a distance it looks “pretty decent.” It was sort of fun trying to find just the right piece to fit.
However, up close, you’ll laugh. We did too! It was a great way to use up all those scraps and accomplish what we needed too!
This was yesterday’s wall…
My hubby used the underlayment we got and cut it to fit over that “ugly” wall. We still have another sheet to put up to the right of the stove. It looks almost like a respectable kitchen now… I painted it white so when the stove needs to be pulled out and cleaned it will be nice.
My new stove is pretending to be “an island” right now… I’ve still got to paint the wall another coat…that’s why the stove is in the middle of the floor.
The sink cabinet has been emptied and my hubby has the plumbing all set for the new sink. He hooked it back up so we have water again, but we moved the drawers to the sitting room, so we can move it out whenever it’s time to put in the new sink.
So that’s it for today! A little Confusion, a little Confession and a little Construction!
See you when I can,
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh, no problem about the appointment confusion. We all mix stuff up now and then. Good luck at the dentist.
The kitchen is looking great. I think it is great how you are fixing up the things that don’t show. Not everyone does that. You should leave a note or memory of some sort before you close all the walls up. Years from now someone will open the wall up and find it. My husband and I do that.
Hope you have a good day!
Take care —
Hi Charlotte,
I think we’ll leave a note in the walls… I’ll have to think of something good to write.
I’m glad you’re enjoing my kitchen renovations. It was a full day but not much of what we did will ever be seen.
Thanks Charlotte,
Blessings, Jeanne
Oh, your kitchen is coming along so well, Jeanne! And the new stove! You mentioned it the other day, but we never saw it. That wall for the stove looks wonderful, and it really is beginning to look like a finished kitchen! I can see the end of the road, and can’t get over how fast it is coming together, although you might think otherwise!
That was funny about the confusion about the dentist appointment! Things like that happen here all the time, especially when you live with “someone else”!
Don’t worry about how things will look at something no one else sees! Well, that’s the seamstress in you—always making sure the inside is as pretty as the outside!
Hi Linda,
We finished getting the wall up today. It took us almost all day. It was crooked bother ways…up AND down.. I thought we’d never get enough shims tacked up to make it level across.
I fixed a few spots on the floor that needed to be corrected since we moved out the old cabinets.
Thanks for the encouragement!
Blessings, Jeanne
Dear Jeanne, we all have our own confusion stories so know that we stand with you. With the challenges you are facing, it’s understandable that things might slip sideways. We are just glad it all got worked out.
Thank you Dorothy,
I felt so stupid…I guess I’m just a little bit anxious for St. Louis to call… I certainly won’t be telling any more news until it’s confirmed with my hubby.
Thanks Dorothy,
Blessings, Jeanne
I have an appointment book instead of using a computer for appointments. When I was catching up on appointments for the (then) new year, I realized I had only 2 doctors’ appointments scheduled — for the same day and the same time. Given that I had a whole months of unscheduled times, I thought that was pretty funny. By then flu season had kicked in so I just cancelled both. There’s no place like a doctor’s office to pick up flu germs.
All the best on your dentist’s appointment tomorrow — it will be good to have it out of the way.
I love Charlotte’s idea, and no one does a better job of making something like that special than you do.
Hi Marilyn,
I was so frustrated for making such a silly mistake, I told George I thought I would cancel my appointment. He asked why and I just said I don’t want to go….but then he reminded me that “he” had already replied “yes” to the text…so I’ll just go and get it out of the way, like you said!
Maybe I’ll write one of my silly little poems and put it in the wall.
Thanks Marilyn,
Blessings, Jeanne
It’s a delight to read of your real life experience with confusion (that sounds bad, but it’s so nice that you’re so honest) and the gracious way you “ate crow”. You’re such a good model!
Kitchen is looking wonderful. I know, we’re just watching you do all the work but, like your sewing, we’re cheering you on from the outside. To me, it looks like you’re nearly there in finishing…at least getting closer.
I hope you can laugh these days…perhaps it will take a day or so after the dental appointment to do so, but I trust that your week and weekend go well and that sleep brings true refreshment.
Blessings.
Hi Becky,
I’d prefer NOT to eat crow ever again. I’ll certainly be more careful of what I post regarding other people. I really felt foolish.
We still have plenty to do…I haven’t even gotten the, paint for my cabinets yet, but that’s something I can do all by myself if need be.
My hubby said maybe tomorrow he could put up my new over the sink light.
Thanks so much, Becky,
Blessings, Jeanne
Keeping the calendar can be challenging and even when you do have an appointment to put the calendar, you sometimes forget or put it on the wrong date. Now how does that happen? The answer is that we are human, does the saying go like this “to err is human?” You have to have humor about our listening skills and our retention. We do not always hear what is being said because we are thinking about something else. At least I do! Now I cannot think of a more wonderful distraction than remodeling your kitchen. A work of art in progress. I well remember our kitchen remodel; my husband was all about saving money. All I wanted was a magazine cover kitchen with everything matching. While the entire kitchen was gutted, the size and location of appliances did not change, but I still am amazed with several contractors doing electricity, flooring, painting and cabinet installation how it all came together. It took about 4 days, but when it was completed, I loved it and loved even more when I realized how much money we had saved. We did all of the leg work picking out and ordering the appliances, flooring, paint, light fixtures and picking out our granite counter tops from a huge slab in a warehouse. Glad that is over!
Your kitchen will be light and airy and designed to function just as you want it. I LOVE the window over your sink where the sunlight can shine in or the gentle breeze on a spring day. Life is hard by the yard, but inch by inch it is a cinch. So keep up the good work and it will soon be a memory. I am so enjoying your photos and daily blog. I pray that you dental appointment goes well.
Hi Laureen,
Well, as you mentioned…”THIS human certainly erred” big time. I still feel crummy about it.
My kichen certainly has been a distraction for us.. almost kind of nice to have so much to do.
Oh my…I wish my kitchen could have been completed in 4 days….but then I wouldn’t have ALL these memories! :o)
I like my kitchen window to! It lets in lots of light, but no breeze…it’s a fixed window.
I’m glad you’re enjoying the kitchen posts!
Blessings, Jeanne
Coming right along as they say. What’s next? More cabinet interior varnishing or whatever it is you are using? When are you going to paint the cabinet exteriors? I’m looking forward to seeing that. And the hardware? I really want to see what you are going to choose. Not that I mean to rush you with all that has been accomplished in the last few days. Just getting the ick factor cleared from behind the cabinets is a feat in itself. I just so enjoy seeing your choices and how it all comes together. We’re still at the studying the old cabinets step. Can’t decide if we should move them around and keep or gut. Such an expensive decision.
I looked back at yesterdays photos because I wanted to study your pic taken from the living room into the kitchen again. Doesn’t it look amazing? Chandi shining brightly and the sparkling floors. What a big difference it will be for your whole home. I’m so happy you are doing this major project.
On another note, my new Natterer dolly arrived yesterday after a harrowing cross country trip that included three days sitting in Sacramento. Love tracking. Hoping to get a picture to share with you soon.
Interesting that you mistook the phone call for George’s appointment and not yours. Know where the priorities are right now. Keeping busy as you have been is the best medicine. I’m sure the dentist will go well.
Hi Joy,
All of the upper wall cabinets and the drawers on the frig wall are all finished on the inside, but I still have plenty of base cabinets to do…and the pantry hasn’t even had the shelves cut for it yet. We bought the less expensive pantry without the shelves because my hubby said he could do them cheaper.
As far as painting the cabinets, I’m waiting on the next 30 or 40% off sale at Sherwin Williams before I buy my paint.
I haven’t even let myself look at knob and pulls yet…later….
The ugly stove wall is all coveted up and looks so much nicer now! I hope the base cabinets go in easily now!
Oh definitely send me some pictures when you can of your new doll. We ALL want to see her!
Thanks Joy…you always keep me working hard to have something to show…
Blessings, Jeanne
Glad things are coming along – I’m always amazed at the new pictures. I, like you and the rest of your group, like the underneath mess removed and made to look nice even if it can’t be seen. As I’ve said before, I can’t even stand “junk drawers”, let alone what falls down alongside the edges of our stove.
Hope your dentist trip goes fast. Funny story about the mix-up.
Hi Paula,
I’m hoping when my new kitchen is done, I’ll be a housekeeper more like you! I’m looking forward to it!
Thanks Paula,
Blessings, Jeanne
I’m with Laureen. I picked out the kitchen cabinets and did a new floor plan but didn’t need to have the floors nor walls refinished. A tiny Vietamese man from the wholesale cabinet place put the cherry-finish cabinets together that came in flat packs from China and installed them in the kitchen, a pantry and a bath-and-a-half in two days. He had a young helper whom he was sponsoring who came to help halfway through the day after attending college classes. It was amazing to watch him work. The fellows came and measured for the granite and came back in two days and it was finished. The rest of the renovation including a redesign of a staircase took six weeks, but that kitchen really sang.
Your kitchen is amazing and the construction that needed to be done in a house of that age very tedious but rewarding. You are really bringing that house to life. Can’t wait to see it finished.
Hi Susette,
I looked at tons of kitchen cabinets before I decided on my unfinished oak ones. There were sometimes the letters RTA beside the images of the cabinets. I never knew what that meant until I looked it up…Ready To Assemble.
I guess that’s what your builder used.
If he put them together in 2 days he must have had lots of experience…I bet there were tons of pieces!
In this house you can’t plan ahead for anything because you never know what you’ll run into. Today it was the wavy and crooked wall. It took us almost all day to get the underlayment on the walls. We had a bunch of shims that had to be used. It looks pretty good tonight. I just finished painting the wall.
Thanks Susette,
Blessings, Jeanne
Your kitchen is looking amazing and before you know it you will forget what the old kitchen looked like. Any remodel job done while your living in the house is a nightmare. I helped my father remodel the kitchen in his house. My mother wanted the wall taken down between the kitchen and dining room, all appliances moved to the other side of the kitchen, new everything. I really never understand her motive as we all thought she would have one big table w/chairs in this huge open space. For whatever reason she kept both the kitchen set and formal dining room. But it wasn’t my house I was just the helper. We did what you mentioned and put before and after pics and a letter behind the new cabinets for future owners to have a laugh at.
You doctor/dentist appointment just gave me a laugh. I had an appointment scheduled for yesterday, that was done so a month ago. I can’t drive anymore, so use Medical Transportation. Called 3 days ago to make that appointment and got a reminder call yesterday afternoon. Around 4pm I realized I didn’t get a confirmation call from the doctor’s office so I called. Sandra you don’t have any appointment today, it was cancelled 2 days ago. I said I never cancelled it. Well let me double check and put me on hold. Came back and said sorry but you must have cancelled the appointment. I am now get testy and said I didn’t cancel it. I didn’t call your office. Someone from your office must have cancelled it out of the system. You know I come by Med. Transport so if I had cancelled the appointment I would have cancel that and made my confirmation at 8am. Very matter of fact, in almost calling me a liar, she said well let’s move on and make a new one. Doctor can see you in 6 weeks. I said that won’t work as this appointment is for medication review and my years worth of medication. Find some within the next two weeks. “Oh wait a cancellation just popped up in the computer calendar. Really! I was not happy, hung up the phone and thought okay, Sande are you going senile and did you actually cancel it. But I knew I didn’t as I had two appointments that day. Hope you heard from your husbands doctors soon.
Hi Sandra,
I don’t know if I’d say we’re on the homestretch as far,as the kitchen goes, but we might be!! :o)
It takes a lot of stamina to do a kitchen! This is my LAST kitchen..I’m sure of it!
I’m glad I’m not the only one with appointment mess ups…yours sounded like a doozie! I hope you finally got it all straightened out.
Thanks Sandra,
Blessings, Jeanne
