The nicest wall my kitchen has seen in 126 years!

I thought I’d give you an update on my kitchen today. It’s changing very quickly! A friend come over and helped with the sink wall… Well, what I mean by “help” is HE DID most of the work… and we handed him things and held a few boards. He knew what he was doing so it got finished in several hours. If my hubby and I were doing it by ourselves… we’d still be working on it. He used a nail gun and I think I want one for Mother’s Day… It was incredible and incredibly fast! My hubby and I would have been using nails and a hammer… you know… old school! :o)
Anyway, take a peek at my wall a few days ago… We started on the 2nd row but had to stop because my hubby couldn’t do any more… :o(

If you are on a computer, click on the sideways shots and they’ll get pretty big!

I had to take lots of pictures to show the progress… look at 4 rows now…

I was thrilled when we go to the window and it was straight across… I was amazed because it seems like nothing is straight in this 126 year old house.

…just a little more to finish up that big wall…

…and look at it now! All new tongue and groove boards… from floor to ceiling!!! I am so thrilled and can’t quit looking at it!

…and one more when it was dark… just because!

…AND I totally finished my new beadboard ceiling… TOTALLY… every little crack and crevice has been covered up by paint. I’m loving it too… Talk about changing a rooms looks… When we took down the soffits and opened up the ceiling, it was amazing! I mean REALLY amazing!

Here is a look at it again…

…and how about a little light on the subject…

I was playing around with the settings on my camera and thought I’d try a panoramic shot of the sink wall and a little around the corner. It’s a bit wavy, but you’ll get the idea… You should click on this picture…it’s pretty fun to look at! :o)

Well, that’s what’s happening in my world… how about yours?

See you,
Blessings, Jeanne

Wow, Jeanne, your kitchen is looking Fabulous!!!! What a boost to the spirits, to get something like this done at a time when things have been looking kinda gloomy. Thank the Lord for friends like that who will pitch in!

Yeah, I think you need a nail gun now!! LOL

    Prayers continue.

    1. Hi Charlotte,
Yes, thank you Kevin!!! There must be a reason all this is happening at once, because I sure wouldn’t have started it if I’d seen what’s coming down the pike!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Oh Jeanne, it is already looking like a total transformation! It’s just amazing what you and George did to make your kitchen so open and fresh looking, and how nice that will be when you welcome people to your home! It gets more exciting every time you post a new addition or change, and you keep us waiting for more!
I take it that you will leave the shiplap a natural color and paint the cabinet white? That will be a great contrast and you will be able to introduce any color you wish for accents, like curtains, towels, appliances, etc.
I’m just plodding along here, wiping fingerprints off of things, vacuuming, baking, just everyday things. We are getting ready for Easter and Holy Week services coming up soon.
Thank you for keeping us up to date on your beautiful, soon to be new (again) kitchen!

    1. Hi Linda, It truly will be nice to have people over…no splinters in their feet… ( we always told every one to keep their shoes ON when they came in!)
No more being embarrassed by the ratty kitchen either.
My cabinets are going to be painted whote…not sure “which” white yet, but something white. I think I’m going to condition the 3 old shiplap walls with linseed oil…getting ready to try that tonight…and then I’ll probably paint my new wall…not sure on the color yet. I just spackled the nail holes, sanded them and vacuumed up the mess…
I’m hoping to get a few more things finished…Kevin just texted George asking, “what’s next?”
      Yay!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Your kitchen is looking prettier every day! I love the sink wall. It really looks like it is coming together. Of course, I am still in love with the ceiling too.
Nothing much happening in my world – just work.
You both are in my thoughts every day.
Hope you have a good day!
    Take care –

    1. Thank you Charlotte,
Oh, I’m glad my ceiling is still getting a little attention! I love it too!!
Thanks so much for stopping by to say hello!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. The kitchen is looking great. My husband goes through nail guns like crazy. He wouldn’t work without one. (He is a shingle installer/roofer) Hand nailing would take forever! LOL You and George are still in my prayers. I hope you have a great day!

    1. Hi Christine,
We’re going to get one…after seeing how it worked. My hubby was pretty impressed.
We’re going to go shopping and I think it will be fun.
Thanks so much for your prayers!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. The kitchen is coming together beautifully. The shiplap and ceiling will vie for being the stars or maybe the lighting too when it’s all together. It’s hard to believe that as handy as George is, he doesn’t have a nail gun. I couldn’t even lift one but it would be child’s play for George. Now or Father’s Day?

I have a suggestion on seeing the wastebasket. I had an under-cabinet pullout for the wastebasket put in during my kitchen renovation and it’s my favorite thing second only to relocating the dishwasher. Maybe it could be part of the new island on the kitchen side if it’s not in the plan now if you put one together from cabinets. Everything is looking wonderful and your adaptations on the fly have been spot on. Looking forward to the next phase. All I’m doing is refurbishing the fairy gardens, a totally different scale from your enormous project. Thanks for sharing the pictures and thanks to your friend.

    1. Hi Susette,
The kitchen IS coming along and I’m loving it.
I am going to have a hard time deciding on a favorite in here….the ceiling, the new wall, my new stove, new sink, new cabinets, maybe a chandelier… :o)
I’ve seen waste cans like that that pull out. Love those… we’ll have to see.
I hope you had a great day in your patio garden…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Your kitchen is rapidly becoming a thing of beauty! The ceiling is my favorite change.. it’s gorgeous! All of the hard work is showing!
A nail gun is a terrific gift! Every mother should have one?

    1. Hi Shara,
Oh good, the ceiling isn’t forgotten!!! I love it too.
And this Mother IS getting a nail gun!!!!! :o)
      Thanks so much Shara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. A M A Z I N G… your dream kitchen is well on its way to being transformed and looking beautiful. So HAPPY for you. I just thought of a hymn titled It’s Just Like His Great Love and the words of the chorus: Its just like Jesus to roll the clouds away, it’s just like Jesus to keep me day by day, it’s just like Jesus all along the way, it’s just like His great love. God brought that hymn to mind as I was writing this. I join you in thanking God for your friend who came and helped you both. Our Pastor says many hands make light work and I love that thought because it is so true. His eye is on the sparrow and I know He watches me. You are precious in His sight.

    1. Thank you, Laureen,
I used to sing that song at church…it was nice to be reminded of it! I agree with your pastor about many hands making a load light!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Thank you once again, Jeanne, for taking time to chat with all of us. Your kitchen and neighbor are both quite amazing. What a blessing to have had his help and encouragement. And, your kitchen is just shouting out it’s own glory. What a great boon to both you and George, who indeed are dear in His sight.

    Blessings.

    1. Thanks Becky,
It really was nice to have some expertise advice on our kitchen…he was a dream to help us! I’m glad you are enjoying the progress as we move along.
      Thanks so very much, Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. What a blessing to have a dear friend give a helping hand. The wall looks great and I still marvel at the ceiling. So happy for you and George to get the much needed help.
Yeah, you / George definitely need a nail gun although as someone else pointed out they are heavy. Thanks for sharing your progress, I look forward to all of your posts.
We are hosting the family Easter dinner so I am busy with spring cleaning, decorating, cooking, etc.
    Prayers to all ~

    1. Hi Leigh,
It was nice to have Kevin steer us in the right direction. Fortunately, we were going the right way…and it was very nice to be assured of that.

We ARE going to get a nail gun! Kevin had a medium sized gun…I think we’ll talk to him and see what he recommends for us!

My house is such a mess, it’s a good thing we are having a church picnic on Sunday… otherwise, we’d have to eat at a restaurant.
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. I am so glad you decided to go with the new shiplap on that entry wall/kitchen. It looks amazing. What a difference. When I saw your panoramic shot, I had to laugh. It actually reminded me of the inside of a sailing ship. Pretty neat.
The completely finished ceiling is such a work of art. Can’t believe you guys did it yourselves. All of that measuring, fitting, and painting. Quite a feat.
While talking with a realtor friend yesterday, he mentioned that tile counters are coming back. Of course, just when I’m ready to take a sledge hammer to our kitchen. 🙂
No plans yet for Easter around here. But, with expected 80 degrees today, I may have to actually water the outdoor potted plants. Need to do yard work, but the many boxes of stuff still to sort need attention more.
And yes, the nail gun fairy agrees that one would make a very attractive gift. 🙂

    1. I vote for the sledgehammer to the tile. I forgot: That was my favorite thing about the renovation.

    2. Thanks Joy,
I like your thoughts of the panoramic shot looking like the inside of a ship! I’ll always think of that.
Don’t forget to show me pictures if you do a ceiling like that… :o)
I already have my countertops in the back of the house, so no tile for me…
Like I said before, a nail gun will soon be in our possession…yippee!!! Just in time for the trim around my door and window and in my living room and all of our baseboard …etc…Yay
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  11. The kitchen looks sensational. Really beautiful ceiling. Can’t wait to see the complete shiplap done. That too will be a absolutely beautiful. Your whole kitchen will be a joy for you and George to enjoy. Excellent work.
Nail guns are great – you just need muscles! That or I’m a weakling…my husband built homes all his life till he retired and one day he told me to try using the nail gun on a little project in a fixer upper house my son and I were doing. I took hold of it and nearly dropped it. I could barely hold it up to nail. At least back then it was heavy for me. Needless to say, my husband finished the nailing for me on that project and I went on to other more fun things to do…installing pretty pink “stuffing” into the walls. I believe it was called insulation.
All the little houses my son and I did, under the helpful eye of my husband, turned out very nice despite my inability to lift heavy things. I sure learned a lot though.
Thanks for sharing your pictures – it’s fun to see the progress you two are making.

    1. Hi Paula,
I’ve learned a lot too, from the many projects we have tackled in the 13 years we’ve lived here. I even learned a few things from Kevin just in the few hours he was here. That’s the way I like to learn…from watching a pro work.

I’m glad you are enjoying my kitchen pics, Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  12. I wonder if Christine’s husband has recommendations for brands of nail guns. George would have to pick out his own, and so would you, but having someone with lots of experience with them advising might be useful. I’m pretty sure Susette could send a picture of her under-cabinet pull-out for the wastebasket, and then you could consult pinterest for variations.

I am so pleased that the window was straight — what a help that was. Your K&H construction worker friend was a friend indeed and has become a hero to blog-watchers around the world.

Thank you so much for the update. It’s just what many of us were wishing for.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
Susette gas already sent a picture to me of her waste basket. They ate pretty nest if you have space for one like that.
I thought I’d ask Kevin about nail guns…get some first hand advice about what’s around here.
I sent Kevin a link to my blog post today and he liked it. I told him it was his 15 minutes of fame…all the way to New Zealand!
I was hoping to get my house semi cleaned up…but the only thing that got accomplished was my dishes and the floors swept…
      Oh well..
      Thank you, Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  13. Hi Jeanne,
It’s looking good! Such a nice thing to have handy friends and so very kind of him to come help, what a blessing indeed!
Your hard work shows; that ceiling is perfect and just GORGEOUS! Continued prayers
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Thank you, Ingrid,
I’m glad my kitchen pictures aren’t boring you… thanks for the compliments!
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you, Sarah Lynn,
I’m glad you enjoyed today’s post about an update on my kitchen. I’m loving my new ceiling wall very much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  14. Looking good! The new ceiling has really brightened things up, and the walls are coming along nicely. I can’t wait for you to get the cabinets in—all in good time. My hubby has an air-powered nail gun and uses it a lot. It’s so much better than all the hand nailing. He said that he would have bought one years ago if he would have known how much easier it would be, but of course, he didn’t want to spend the money! I hope you and your family enjoy the Easter holiday.

    1. Hi Carolyn,
You can’t imagine ow bright the ceiling really is now! It’s so wonderful!!
I can’t imagine how different it’s going to look in here when the cabinets go up…
Hang on and we’ll see what comes next.
      Thanks Carolyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  15. I have a favor to ask of all of you who read this. My brother-in-law is having hip-replacement surgery today, which would be a big enough deal, but there is concern that this could affect his liver, for which he needs a transplant. (It reacted badly to some medicine he took several years ago.) If you have a spare moment, prayers would be much appreciated.

This kitchen is going to be so beautiful. One thing I love is something that was already there. That big window that lets you see so much is great. People are going to come in and say, “Oh, Jeanne, your walls are beautiful,” and then they’ll see the new appliances, and then the lighting fixtures, and then they’ll be asking about the ceiling. I haven’t decided whether they’ll notice the food first or last. I suppose it depends on how hungry they are. I do think you are going to have to make that beautiful cake. Think how lovely it will look in your new kitchen.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
We will be praying for your brother in law too.
I hope the next time we hear from you, it’s good news! May the Lord comfort you and your sister today as you wait.

Thanks for all the sweet compliments on the kitchen. Bit by bit it’s turning from an ugly duckling to a beautiful “white” swan!
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  16. I certainly will be praying for your brother-in-law, Marilyn. A hip replacement is big enough of a thing to go through, but with a liver that needs a transplant, well, that is really big. I hope God’s hand guides the surgeon, and the surgery is a success.

Oh, yes, I love Jeanne’s big window over the sink! I love looking out at birds, squirrels, and other things you see outside as the seasons change. I think people won’t know where to look first in that beautiful kitchen!

We have had nothing but rain all day, and I’m sure Jeanne is having more than her share too. Just think of all the flowers we will be having…………..if the rain ever stops!

  17. Hi Marilyn – Sorry to hear what your brother in law is going through. Prayers for a complete recovery and strength to you and your sister as well.
    Leigh

  18. The doctor says the surgery was a success. Larry should be walking this afternoon. I was afraid that might mean walking to the car, but they are having him stay overnight and Linda will stay at a nearby hotel. I’m sure she’ll stay late and be back early. So far, so good, and Larry, Linda, and I all appreciate your prayers.

  19. Just to clear things up a bit, I’m not the Linda that Marilyn is referring to. She has a sister named Linda. I thought some of you might have been confused!
