A day of laying flooring ended with a party…

We had a slightly shorter day working on the church kitchen but I think I’m more tired today than the last two days when we worked 11 hours each day. Maybe I’m just getting old…ya think???

You all had such sweet comments today but I had no time to answer them…thank you for all the things you share…I love reading them…and wish I had time to answer them…sorry…

We started on the floor this morning…the Kilz we had painted on the floor was a nice touch…thank you, honey! It was his idea to paint it so we werent scooting around on that icky, nasty floor.

There were a couple of pretty bad areas that we could really see once it was painted white, so we decided to fill them in with some floor putty…

The walls were crooked right from the very first row, but once we got that row straightened out, things started moving along. The color of this flooring is called Foxwood, and my hubby was really liking the looks of it as we laid it. I told him, “Well… we could take up what we put down and put it in my sewing room, and change to this Foxwood!” There was silence! That’s probably a NO, don’t you think?

When we did the areas around the door facings, I used my “paper cutting template making skills”…

…and my hubby took the marks that I transferred to the planks and used his strong hands with some antique heavy duty cutters to cut this 1/4″ thick loose lay flooring.

Want to see the result… it’s a pretty tight fitting edge around this door facing…

While I was working on the floor, he was putting the outlets in the boxes and connecting them with power. He got the cam LED lights hooked up and they were fantastic! There has never been so much light in this kitchen!!! Yay!!

The red crate is covering the area where we put some floor putty. We didn’t want to step on that area until it had hardened.

Here it is looking the other way…

We did our living room, dining room and kitchen using this Loose Lay Vinyl Plank flooring…and if you’d like to read my post on it, you can see it HERE.

We got about 3/4 of the flooring laid, but had to stop to go to a birthday party for Edgar. Edgar cooked his own dinner… Columbian/Peruvian chicken and rice! It was great and we were starved!

Here is a picture of them with a puzzle of Columbia, South America, behind them. We had a wonderful visit with a few friends and caramel cake and ice cream.

…and now I need to go to bed because somehow I have to get out of bed in the morning to finish that floor. Right now that seems like a real impossibility! 😮

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Is that Sara? She’s certainly growing up.
That dinner looks like just what you needed after a hard day’s work. I wished you a good dinner and you got one.

The floor is looking wonderful. I’m so glad for the white coat underneath. Now you’ll feel like you are giving the church a clean, clean floor instead of covering up a dirty floor. I agree with you that George’s silence when you offered to let him change floors at your house probably did not mean consent.

Will today and tomorrow finish the kitchen?

    1. Hi Marilyn,
Yes, that IS Sara…and she has grown up…right before our eyes.
You did wish us a good dinner and it certainly was!
The floor is finished and the cabinets are hopefully going to be set in tomorrow. All I can say is Hallelujah!
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Like Marilyn said, I thought to myself, is that Sara? She IS growing up, and beautifully too, I might add! What a wonderful treat you had at the end of a long and rewarding day! Edgar looks like an excellent cook, and it certainly must have been a wonderful end to a successful day for the two of you to be able to partake of the birthday celebration. Happy Birthday, Edgar!
Wow, that floor is just beautiful, Jeanne! I really do like that color, but when I scroll down to the first picture with the box in the center of the floor, it looks like what you put down on your own floor, more of a gray. I guess it’s the light that changes it. You certainly did a wonderful job of cutting out the planks and getting them to fit so perfectly. Old houses are really hard to work with, since most of the time, walls aren’t perfectly straight, probably due to age. Wallpapering is hard to do too, when you have to allow for walls that don’t meet up perfectly.
That kitchen is coming along so nicely, and the end is in sight, isn’t it? Like all the rest of us, I can’t wait to see it, and to see your own kitchen come to beautiful finish! Just think, after the two kitchens are finished, all the TIME you will have to get back to your sewing room!

    1. Hi Linda,
Sara is having another birthday next week and her mom asked me to help with her party…

The Foxwood color really is pretty and if I had seen it done before in a room, I just may have chosen it over the Ashwood that I picked. Foxwood is more brown and mine is more gray tones, like barnwood. But I still like mine!!!

Yes….just think of all the time I’ll have to sew when I’m done “playing Joanna!” I’m ready to sew again and I bet everyone else is too.
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Dear Jeanne, Isn’t it wonderful to have a party at the end of a day of hard work! Happy Birthday to Edgar!

    1. Hi Dorothy,
Yes, it was wonderful to have someone else cook dinner and we just got to enjoy the party…although we were so tired, bed was what was really calling to us.
      Thanks Dorothy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Hi Jeanne;
The flooring looks so wonderful – just can’t wait to see the next step. So glad you had a wonderful dinner awaiting you. I think it’s pretty cool Edgar cooked his own birthday dinner and it looks yummy. I have never had Colombian food, it all looks very interesting but I was wondering about the chicken?? Birthday wishes to Edgar.

    1. Thanks for the compliments on the flooring, Leigh. It’s special much prettier than before…and so much brighter with the new lights!
The chicken was in the rice…mixed in….and really yummy.
      Thanks Leigh,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I absolutely can’t wait to see the cabinets/counter tops sitting on that wonderful floor. I can just see your church members at the open house (you should have one of course) seeing the updates and rushing to Lowe’s/Home Depot to replicate the same in their own homes. Your amazing transformation will be noted across Carbondale.
A big happy birthday to Edgar. What a delicious looking meal. And little Sara aka teenage Sara has the most lovely long hair. That is a perfect family portrait.
Hope your knees hold out and you can take a break to admire the freshness.

    1. Hi Joy,
Well, you’ll see the cabinets tomorrow. We moved them in the kitchen and they should be secured tomorrow!
You are quite funny about everyone rushing out to duplicate the kitchen…it does make me excited about mine now!
Sara had 14″ cut off her hair not that long ago and it’s already long again…and it is shiny and so beautiful.
It’s not my knees so much…it’s my back! Bending over and over so many times just isn’t in my usual routine! The floor is done so I plan on doing “upright” things from here on out!
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. The floor is looking wonderful! You did a great job on the tricky places with those templates. The kitchen is really coming along now.
The birthday party looked like great fun and the food looked wonderful.
Hope you have a good day.
    Take care –

    1. Hi Charlotte,
It was a good day today but I’m glad it’s over! Tomorrow should be the last day of the really hard and pressing stuff. The granite countertops still have to be cut and set in place, but that’s for another time. We just wanted to mainly get it painted, the floor done and the cabinets in.
      Thank you, Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. What a splendid way to end a long day of hard work. It’s great to have such generous, hospitable friends that can reciprocate much of what you’ve passed along to them.

Although we your readers have not experienced all of the work that you and George have done, I can at least add my admiration of a good so nicely done. Yes, I trust that the church goers will be super pleased with your labors of love. It should be a delight to work in the kitchen.

    Blessings.

    1. Hi Becky,
Last night Alba asked us all to give a wish for Edgar. I told Edgar I wished he could stay 4 more years! He just laughed!
Our Pastor has been coming over regularly to see how things are coming along and a while ago he came over and said he loved it…it was so bright and fresh and clean! Yay! It does look like a totally different room.
I think the students are really going to enjoy using the new kitchen!
      Thanks Becky,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. The Foxwood flooring looks very warm and inviting, Jeanne, and it’s probably nice to stand on, too. You and George make quite the remodeling team. Good to know your template making skills are transferable to other occupations! Be sure to mention that in your forthcoming book. 😉

How nice that you could end your day on a sweet note with Edgar’s party! His birthday dinner looked delicious, and I’m sure you enjoyed the meal and the visit as much as Edgar’s family enjoyed hosting you. Sara is quickly growing into a lovely young lady and is now taller than her mama! Does she still find time for some sewing?

Little respites such as Chinese New Year and Edgar’s Birthday help to break up the work you and George are doing and give you a bit of a needed rest. Hope you continue to enjoy simple pleasures such as these along with your busy work schedule, even as you anticipate the completion of your farmhouse kitchen remodel!

    1. Hi Anne,
The Foxwood floor REALLY is a very warm brown color and so pleasant to stand on. It’s such a pretty kitchen now.
“Template” skills seem to follow me in whatever I do! I use them a lot! Oh yes, that book… :o) I think writing a book would have been easier than remodeling the kitchen!

I don’t think Sara does much sewing now…she’s us with school things. But she does still love to learn things about sewing.

It was enjoyable to have something besides work to enjoy!
      Thanks so much Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. How about a picture of you, Jeanne, placing the floor down? The churchgoers need to see you, too, and so do we. Reuben likes your flooring as it matches his fur so he can camouflage himself and sneak up on George.
Sara is beautiful, as is the whole family. Love hearing about them again.

    1. Hi Susette,
Well we never got that picture of me sitting on the floor laying the planks taken today, but I promise you, I put down every plank and cut every hard piece in that kitchen! Thank goodness that floor is now finished!

Sara and her family are a real blessing in our lives and I can’t even imagine them going back to Columbia. ..
      Thanks so much, Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Everything is coming along nicely! I like the new floor with the painted trim. It looks so fresh and clean! You and George have done such a marvelous job, and I can’t wait to see it with all the cabinets and appliances installed. I also noticed how “pretty” the meal looks! I’m so glad you had a nice meal and didn’t have to cook !

    1. Hi Carolyn,
The floor is finished and the cabinets should be secured tomorrow!!! I’ll be glad to get back to my normal life.
I know my kitchen was supposed to be next, but I think I might have to take a short break before we begin ours! I’m about “kitchened” out!
      Thanks Carolyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne
