The shed is finished but the dress is NOT…

PLEASE NOTE: my brown and green handmade hats are ending this evening. If you want to check them out, you can click on the pictures at the right side bar or you can click HERE for the brown one, and HERE for the green one…

Well, everyone, I tried, but only one thing managed to get finished today…the shed! It is all newly stained and supposedly good for five years. ..I certainly hope so. I don’t relish the idea of doing that again. The only thing is, now my hubby thinks the chicken coop looks kind of shabby, so it might be next on his/my to-do list… (you can see where the Mulberry tree got a slight haircut!)

I had the evening to myself and skipped doing my dishes so I could spend some time working on Rebecca’s dress. I have the snaps sewn on the sleeve cuffs and I decided to add just a little bit of interest using some gray/blue embroidery floss and run it through the beading. Then I decided on the cameo for a brooch.

The back has another placket so the skirt doesn’t open all the way to the hem…it will have a regular finished edge all the way around. (It’s just serged right now.)

I kept looking at pictures and couldn’t figure out what was wrong, but something looked off on the dress… the white lace part.

I measured from the brooch to each side and it seemed to come out the same, but when I saw this picture, I knew what the problem was.

I took my tape measure and measured from the seam where the collar was sewn on to the sleeve seam, and there was the difference. You can see where I’ve marked it. It’s a little less than 1/4″, but it really stands out to me in that white lace. That sleeve needs to be moved in a bit… I knew something was wrong…but it will be righted. Here’s one last look before it gets sent back to the “alterations lady” for “repairs!”

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. You may get hurricane related rain tomorrow, so you’ll have time to sew and you’ll be so glad you finished the shed. It might get completely soaked and then you would have had to wait for it to dry to finish. Now you won’t. You can look out at your beautiful redwood shed and smile while it rains. I am hearing rain, not electrical outages, so your slow cooker can make dinner while you sew. I am so glad Irma is not going to make your life miserable.
    The dress looks lovely.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
It has been raining here all day long and I keep looking at the shed thinking that it’s going to change colors or something but so far it hasn’t. It looks just as good as it did yesterday. I’m so glad we got it done before all the rain started.
I just got the dress figured out…but now it’s time to start dinner…
      Thanks,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. You’re right, Jeanne, I could see in the first couple of pictures that something was a bit “off”, but couldn’t figure out quite what it was. If you’re like me, you won’t be happy until it’s perfect!!

I do like the cameo and the blue-gray floss accent; they pick up a color from the print! I think this is going to be one of your prettier dresses, and that’s saying a lot for me, since I’m not overly fond of browns!

Your shed looks really nice now! Is the chicken coop the next painting project??

I actually got some sewing done today–almost finished a Wee Care gown. I did the smocking a month or two ago, but it still needed hems (CB opening as well as sleeves and hem), a neck binding, and ribbon ties in the back. I still need to finish the binding and add the ribbon ties but it shouldn’t take long (Wee Care gowns are taken to the local hospital and given to families who have lost a newborn. We make them in sizes from under 1 lb. all the way to newborn. It’s actually a SAGA program, in which our chapter participates.)

    1. Hi Charlotte,
I must be like you because I measured and figured and finally got the dress fixed. I am thrilled that you like the dress because I know you’ve mentioned before that you didn’t like browns…
I used to go over to a doctor friends house and we made baby dresses for still borns for our hospital…it was nice knowing we could do that small thing for the babies…and parents.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. The shed looks wonderful, Jeanne! I see the “haircut” of the mulberry tree, and it doesn’t look that bad at all. I’m sure next year it will be back to the normal place for that tree. Oh dear, another building to paint! But I do think it will look really good painted just like the shed to match. Good luck with that!

The dress is just going to be beautiful! I love browns, especially in the fall. It took me awhile to see what you were talking about, but yes, now that you pointed it out, it does make a difference. How can something like that happen to such an experienced seamstress? You can imagine what happens when someone like me sews an outfit! More things go wrong than right and the thing is, you never know how it happened!

Looking forward to another beautiful day here, but hoping we get a few of those “Irma” raindrops too!

    1. Hi Linda,
We bought the paint for the chicken coop a while back from the same store. It’s called barn red and we are hoping it’s about the same color…
I cut the pieces out at the same time so either one side of the bodice stretched or it had a wrinkle underneath that I missed smoothing out. It’s fixed now!
We got raindrops all day long…and they are still coming down….hope you did too.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Congratulations on finishing the shed! It looks great!!
The dress is coming along wonderfully!! The cameo looks beautiful. It is a great choice. Your details are, as always, impeccable.
Hope you have a good day.
    Take care.

    1. Thank you Charlotte,
The “alterations lady” got it all fixed so now she can move on to other things…
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I noticed it but sure wasn’t going to say anything. Glad you caught it. Not that I’m so great at things. It’s a beautiful dress and the brooch is perfect. You choose accessories perfectly.

Maybe the shed is a one-person job, but I doubt it. Things go so much quicker when two people work on it. Do you think maybe George had that in mind from the beginning? Naaah. Thanks again for sharing the Fair and especially the tractors.

    1. Hi Susette,
Next time I make this pattern, I’ll double check the width of each shoulder before I attach the sleeves.
It worked out okay with helping him stain the shed…this morning I balanced the checkbook while he did the dishes. He even said,”I’ll do the dishes since you helped me with the shed.”
      Thanks Susette,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Rebecca’s Civil war dress is really beginning to look beautiful. My computer is with the friend to repair it and it will hopefully be fixed by the end of the wee barring no other problems. 🙁 Glad you had a good time at the fair. Our is coming up along with the Little Brown Jug ( that’s harness racing ) and people come from all over the country and world to see it.

    1. Hi Laura,
We have another fair starting in another town just 7 miles away… “The Apple Festival.” I guess it’s that time of year.
We used to have a big harness racing race called “The Hambletonian” at another town.
      Thanks Laura,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Wow, those chickens have a lovely home. What a great chicken house. And yes, the chicken house needs to match the lovely shed. I’m sure the chickens will appreciate all of your work. 🙂 So what’s next? The gazebo to match? Or maybe it doesn’t need refreshing this year. Lots of work, but will look so beautiful. So, how about those kitchen cabinets? A little filler and paint and they will look great too. Maybe George can build a cabinet around the oven and make one cabinet by the sink into a place for your new dishwasher. 🙂 Hee Hee
Glad you caught the shoulder thingy. I thought the collar was crooked but not that. Boy aren’t we a critical bunch? The dress is quite the eye catcher with the added embroidery touch. Matches that cameo perfectly. Rebecca will be the envy of her peers when she attends the fall festival.
Me, I’ll be hopefully finishing the cabinet cleaning at the other house today. It was another hot day again yesterday and not a fun experience.

    1. Hi Joy,
Thanks for the compliment on George’s Chicken Coop. He made it up and one of our neighbors liked it and copied it for his chickens too.
I’m still debating about the cabinets….I don’t think I’m up to a big project again, just yet.
The dress is fixed and looks much better now. I need to get it hemmed next I guess.
I think a Fall festival is in the works for Rebecca…
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Thank you Joy for finding out who the blond girl was with the Betsy McCall paper dolls. I knew of Linda and Sandy but never knew there was another cousin named Barbara. The name of that set of paper dolls confused me too because I didn’t realize Betsy’s dog, Nosy, was part of the story. “Betsy and Nosy Go To The Circus.” Duh? I couldn’t make out the name Nosy… or what I thought the blond girl’s name was ….Posy… “who’s that!” In fact, I forgot all about a dog named Nosy. So the blond cousin is Barbara and she has nothing to do with the name Nosy or what I thought was Posy. Hah!

One of my AMG doll’s name is Barbara McCall ….. no relation to Betsy.

The Civil War dress is coming along. Love the white lace bib.

    1. Hi Paula,
I wish I had taken more pictures of the paper dolls. They had a lot at that store. I needed to have a clearer picture too. That would have helped.
I just finished the problem with the shoulder so now I can move on to the rest of the dress set.
      Thank you, Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Hi Jeanne,
Happy Tuesday! I think the chicken coop looks just fine. The outside of the house looks as good as the inside! Congratulations, you two certainly do work well together and the end results are amazing.
I love the civil war dress, it’s very pretty. I think the lace is lovely and the cameo broach is the prefect touch.
    Have a great day
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Hi Ingrid,
Happy Tuesday to you too, Ingrid.
My hubby and I have always worked well together, so things usually go pretty smoothly.
Thank you for liking the dress…Rebecca likes it too…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. I’m like Linda, I love brown. I’m glad you defeated the problem — all of us knew you would — and that you are getting rain but nothing horrible. After the rain, everything will be so beautiful and green that you can take Rebecca’s picture outside if you like. Good luck on the hats. Maybe you can do hats for every season — or at least at Easter. It would be a nice tradition.

    1. HI Marilyn,
I’m getting ready to work on those pantalettes out of the pretty white lace. I think they’ll be very sweet looking.
I think it would be fun to have lots of decorated (and some undecorated) hats for sale by Easter. I could set it up like a hat shoppe and have them named and numbered and showcase each one… just a thought.
We did get rain all day long… just a sprinkle most of the day but it was pretty nice for everything around here… except for the Apple Festival Fair in the next town.
Also, I checked at C.S’s and they held the G.C. thinking I would be in… but then mailed it after a few days. I meant to tell you…Thank you again…
      Blessings, Jeanne
