The end is almost in sight…

I’m sorry that this blog has been about home projects lately. I have furniture stored in my sewing room and can’t get to anything… but the end is in sight! We just have the floor area in front of the fireplace to finish up. I’m determined to get that done tomorrow. It’s not that big, but each piece next to the curved brick fireplace hearth has to be custom cut.

There is still lots of do, but I just mostly wanted to share the flooring “miracle” with you! There is still that living room window to paint, those curtains to make, the baseboard trim to add, trim around the door to my sewing room and the window that looks into my sewing room from the living room, and probably lots more. Thank you for sticking with me through all the prep work and then the floor laying. I’m sure it hasn’t been totally interesting to all of you, but you have been so kind with your comments! We appreciate that. Dolly posts will come as soon as I get the furniture out of my sewing room.

I just have a few favorite pictures that I took today…

My blue cabinet was the first to grace the new floors… doesn’t it look like it belongs there?

The next thing moved onto the new floors was my Depression Era China Cabinet that my hubby surprised me with on Valentine’s Day 2 years ago. Our floors were so uneven, it had been sitting with the front two feet on coasters. Somehow I sweet talked my hubby into taking the metal pieces off the back legs and adding some furniture guards to the front to raise it up. We had to unload the cabinet and turn it on its back to do this.. My hubby must really love me, because he was just going to put the coasters back under the front legs!

Oh, and I managed to get that corner with the new register figured out. It looks pretty good now… better than it’s looked in 13 years! :o)

This next picture made it into my “favorites” because it represents “hope” to me… that last little half piece of flooring just fit into the groove between the kitchen flooring and the new flooring. I mentioned to my hubby how nice it would be to just continue the flooring into the kitchen, since it’s all one big room. It really would look nice with the same flooring everywhere you looked in that big area. Well, instead of him saying something like…”Not now,” he said, “well, if you can get some money saved up in your dress account, I’ll think about it.” That’s almost a YES, isn’t it??? Well, I thought it was!

And my favorite picture of the day: He moved the little table into the living room and hooked up the TV. (it was in my sewing room, so things are clearing out slowly but surely!) He didn’t know it, but I sneaked up behind him and took this picture of him playing with Reuben… (don’t tell him I took it! Shhhhh!) He doesn’t need any furniture… just a man and his dog and a new floor to lay on!

So that will be it for today. Hang on for just a little longer and I promise there will doll dresses popping up ASAP!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Watching your long awaited floor grow is nearly as much fun as watching clothes come together. I’m definitely for making the kitchen match. My current plan is alternate sewing and flooring weeks with one day a week for good works for others. And Sunday as a day of rest, when you probably buy supplies for the following week.

That sounds as much fun as the week we tried working 24 hours and sleeping 8, making costumes for the Shakespeare Festival. That was long ago, when energy still grew on trees.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
Thank you for your kind thoughts…and guess what? We ended up with 3 boxes and 3 planks left over so we had a 75 sq ft head start on the kitchen. We figured it out and only needed 3 more boxes so we just got back from getting more. The owner gave us the 10% discount again PLUS a half gallon of adhesive that one of his guys had left over from a job…for FREE!
We needed just a little dab of adhesive to make a few planks stick down…like the area going into my sewing room threshold…
      I’m so excited…you can’t imagine how excited!!!
      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Oh Jeanne, this is so much fun to see how your floors are transforming your living room! I have nothing against you showing this to us, because I love decorating and seeing how other people do it. You have to do all this to get the desired outcome, and the end is in sight!! How lovely it will look for a nice Thanksgiving dinner!
That is a sweet picture of George and Rueben! I can’t get over how big Rueben is!

Oh wanted to mention, you have a very pretty chandelier hanging in the opening between your living room and sewing room. Is that an antique find or original to the house?

    1. Thank you Linda,
If YOU think it’s fun, you should be standing in my living room and see the smile on my face…
Oh Thanksgiving…I hadn’t thought that far ahead!
I have it on a list to show that little chandelier for a post…I’m glad you noticed it… :o)
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Now I see the appeal of the floor color: Rueben can sneak up on George in his natural camouflage. It’s a good thing Rueben wasn’t an Irish Setter. I’m for the decorating posts, too. I’ve never seen a boring post here. “Yes” to the continuation into the kitchen. So happy for you to have the new flooring. You must be so proud to have done all this yourselves.

    1. Please don’t tell Reuben I misspelled his name. Spellcheck didn’t catch it even though my spelling didn’t look quite right to me. I should have looked at yours.

      1. Hi Susette,
When I put that last plank in, George did a little drum roll! It’s been a long time coming, and we are very proud of ourselves for tackling this big job. It feels good to know we dI’d it and didn’t have to pay that $700 for installation.
BUT…we had 3 boxes left over and that was a good start on the kitchen, so before I could almost blink, my hubby called the guy at Karpet Korner to make sure they had more of the same colir. They did, so we picked it up and tomorrow we are going to do the kitchen…I can’t believe that!!!
        Thanks Susette,
        Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Jeanne.. my husband and i spent half of June and most of July having flooring laid throughout the house (except the bedrooms), repainted every room and converted a “patio room” inti a full fledged family room.. so seeing pictures of flooring warms my heart! Like you, we had our furniture stacked and pushed up against walls only to be repositioned .. we had a narrow path to the kutchen for 4 weeks. Love your flooring choice:) Almost there!!

    1. Wow, Shara,
Your house sounds like it’s been torn up for most of the summer! I bet you feel like it’s a totally new house! Me too! And we picked up enough more planks to do the kitchen. I just can hardly believe my hubby went for it!!!
Our floor is so new, I’m almost afraid to walk on it…I bet you were too.
      Thank you, Shara,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. I’ve been very much enjoying your floors posts. I know what it is like to wait for years to get home projects completed. I am sharing in your joy and that is what your posts are all about. So thank you for sharing your excitement, hard work, and feelings of accomplishment with us.
    Have a great day!
    Take care.

    1. I’m glad you’ve been enjoying my “home” posts, Charlotte. It’s a good thing because that’s the only thing I’ve had time for here lately.

With my living room and dining room , and soon my kitchen floor all nice and pretty, I think my house feels nicer and more welcoming! I might have to have an open house…13 years late!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Oh, the floors look great, Jeanne! You are almost through (except for the kitchen) and can soon put back the furniture and enjoy your floor. You must feel so happy and proud of the work done by both of you.
That’s a cute picture of a George and Reuben – and I agree with Suzette, Reuben matches so well with the floor and he can hide by just laying on it!
Your posts about redecorating are just as interesting as the doll outfit posts, so don’t worry about boring us. It’s neat to see the changes you’ve made throughout the years! Always enjoyable.
Can’t wait to see it all done.

    1. Thank you, Paula,
We put most everything back in the living room and dining room, but first, with nice new floors, we decided to buy some gliders for the bottom of our couch, the 2 chairs in our living room, our buffet, and our massive kitchen table. Our chairs already had gliders on them.

We are going to start on the kitchen tomorrow morning…Oh boy…I’m so sore right now I can hardly move, but I think we can get it done pretty quickly…
      Thanks so much, Paula,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Good Morning Jeanne,
It’s almost done! How exciting for you, it’s looking so polished. Just like everyone else I too can’t wait to see your room completely finished. And NOoo I’m not bored, I love your posts whether it’s sewing, decorating or sharing others photos, It’s always enjoyable.
    Have a wonderful Friday.
    Hugs
    Ingrid

    1. Hi Ingrid,
Thank you do much for hanging in there with me while I do this. We got most everything moved from my sewing room so u should be able to get in there…maybe even this weekend…
Right after we do the kitchen floor…
Oh well, it won’t last forever and there will be dolly dresses soon!
      Thank you, Ingrid,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Oh, so pretty. How exciting to replace your furniture pieces and see the lovely new room appear. I’m so glad you painted because now everything looks fresh together. I’m with Susette and the sewing room floor too. (In the future.) It’s not too big. I mean how much more can it cost to get flooring to stockpile for it as well as the kitchen? Push push, shove shove. 🙂 I think you should break out a bottle of Martinelli’s sparkling cider and have a toast when the rest of the floor is cut and in place later today. Such a special occasion.
We’re having a heatwave. Supposed to be 105 today and thereabouts for a week. Fortunately, it is cool now, but not looking forward to the heat later on.

    1. Just read above you are going to do the kitchen tomorrow?? Isn’t there prep? Wow, this is just so exciting. Can’t wait.

      1. Hi Joy,
Yes, we are going to do the kitchen starting in the morning!!!! :o) I am so sore in my legs and hips and arms, I don’t know how I will make it, but I will just have to push through it.
13 years ago we put commercial grade peel and stick tile in the kitchen. So it’s pretty nice and flat. There was a slight ridge between the kitchen and the dining room, but my hubby has a plan to peel up the first row of tIle and plane down the next row of tiles. That loose lay plank flooring is pretty incredible and we think it will be a pretty smooth transition… at least we are hoping so.
We are going out with the kids tomorrow night to celebrate my birthday, but I hope we’ll also be celebrating the floors ALL being done!!!
        Thanks so much Joy,
        Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Hi Christine,
That picture is one of my new favorites too! It was so simple but so sweet to see them enjoying themselves on the floor!
      Thank you, Christine,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Charlotte Trayer

As Marilyn said, it’s almost as much fun watching your new floor take shape (and reading of your excitement over it!) as watching dolly clothes take shape!

I haven’t been posting much lately because I’m having internet woes at home. Tuesday Fronntier will be checking the line (we have “noise”) all the way to the house, if necessary, so hopefully that will take care of it.

Believe it or not, I have my little netbook out at the fairgrounds right now, and am using their wifi! In another hour or so, I’ll start judging a needlework contest (I’m a 4-H judge–sewing, needlework, and, some years, foods and baking).
