Thank you so much for your sweet comments on my new “dolly wares!” Weren’t they fun? I will try to use them in an upcoming auction!
I’m sorry, but my brother and his family were here and there was NO time for sewing… the only time I’ve been in my sewing room in the last 3 days was for taking pictures of my “goodies” (HERE) and boxing up Addy’s dress for the winner. There might be some “sewing time” tomorrow… I’m hoping so… I need bright daylight to get the colors right on the embroidery on Elizabeth’s Regency dress… If you’ve forgotten what I was working on…here’s where I left you…
I was thinking today about a post and decided to show an old post… actually the post that has gotten the most hits. This one keeps popping up at the top of the “favorites” list. I’m not sure why… you’ll have to see if you can guess…
I’ll share it again and hope to see you on Thursday. I just copied and pasted it below so you didn’t have to click on any links…
What would you guess is the oldest thing in my house?

FIRST: I’m sorry so many of you had trouble receiving my post yesterday… I’m not sure what caused that… If you ever DON’T get my post, you can do as some did and click on the BLOG tab under the header of yesterday’s post, or you can simply go to your browser and type www.idreamofjeannemarie.com
…just remember there is no “i” in Jeanne… :o)
SECOND: I’m thrilled with your comments from yesterday’s post on Cecile, (I tried to read them as I was working at the yard sale set up yesterday) but I just now got home and it’s mandatory that I get in the shower!!!!! I have been there since 10:00 this morning and I was the last one to leave at 9:30… so I’m beat, and I’m doing the money first thing in the morning, and have to be back there for the early birds… 6:30, so I won’t be leaving any comments now, but I will in a few days… Thank you so much for all your kind words… I was thrilled at what you all said!
We only had a sprinkle of rain and we were prepared with tarps this year so nothing was damaged! Also the weather forecast has changed from an 80% change of rain to a 20% chance… WE are thrilled.
Want a sneak peek at our yard sale? We decided to use tents this year… and it was a real blessing… even just setting up the tables was better…and slightly cooler…
This is just a fraction of what we actually have. It’s down the driveway in the other direction, in the garage, under another tent, out in the open and it goes on and on and on….

I wrote this post on Tuesday evening… smart cookie that I am!!!
We bought an 1892 fixer upper house 11 years ago…and yes, we are STILL fixing it up. There are things we’ve “discovered” as we were working on it that made us question our sanity as to why we bought it, but we did…and so we just keep plodding along. We didn’t actually know it was this old when we bought it… the seller told us it was built in 1935 or somewhere around then. We discovered a couple years after owning it, when we had to go to the courthouse for something, that it was an 1892… EEK!
Anyway, enough on that… it got me to thinking about old things, vintage things, antique things that we own…
I wondered what was the oldest thing in our house… was it some piece of furniture, something from when we were a baby, a painting or picture? We do have a pocket watch from my hubby’s great great grandfather that is engraved with the same year as our house…1892. Other than that, I figured out the oldest thing in our house is right in my sewing room! You’ll never believe it…it’s a magazine…a fashion magazine for ladies from 1894 and 1896. I actually have two issues of the magazine..one from June and one from September. The magazine is called Delineator and it turns out to be the oldest things we own.
The magazines are very fragile and I keep them in plastic sleeves to protect them. I’m sure I probably should have them in some kind of “acid-free” paper thingy, but I look at them from time to time for inspiration and I’m not that worried about it. Rebecca will never be interested in them, and so I just enjoy them while I have them. Every time you turn a page in them, you hear a little tear on the pages, so I turn them very carefully and go slow.
A subscription to Delineator was only $1.00, which seem crazy to us now… but that’s what this page says…
The second page is just so beautifully illustrated…
It’s pretty amazing to see the changes in things from 122 years ago. I find myself wondering who looked at this magazine, was she into sewing, did she knit, crochet, tat, was she a good cook, did she have children, did she make their clothing? It makes me wonder what people will be saying about us in 100 years… what will be in and what will be out? Who knows… so I thought I’d take us on a trip down memory lane for a few minutes and let you see some of the illustrations in my magazines… Enjoy!
Can you believe these sleeves? I can’t even imagine what the pattern must look like…
I especially like looking at the advertisements in the back.
What in the world????
It’s been so HOT everywhere lately…Swimming anyone???
I hope you enjoyed the journey from the past… I always do…
See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne, you had me somewhat confused today! I guess I didn’t read too carefully, and could not imagine how you put together a yard sale that big so soon after you just went on the 100 mile yard sale, but then I started reading, and also thought “I’ve seen this before!” Going back, and reading more carefully this time (!), I see it was done LAST year. Makes sense, and I do remember those magazines with the crazy advertisements.\, especially the Fat People one! Love all the illustrations of the beautiful garments, gee, they wore a lot of “stuff”!
Happy sewing today!
Hi Linda,
Sorry for the confusion and glad you went on to enjoy today’s post!
Is it as pretty today in St. Louis as it is here? I’m inside sewing, but wish I was outside!
Blessings, Jeanne
What an amazing post! I can understand why it is the most visited. I don’t know whether to comment on your garage sale which looked wonderful or the magazine which also looked wonderful! I am a huge fan of old magazines and catalogs. I have nothing as old as your copies of “The Delineator”. The pages you posted are just wonderful and I know I will be revisiting this post.
Hope you have a good day.
Take care.
Hi Charlotte,
It really is fun to sit down and look through these magazines. I wonder if the women who read them back then, looked forward to them like we do our magazines today?
I’m glad you enjoyed the post.
Blessings, Jeanne
I’d forgotten about Elizabeth’s dress. It is going to be a stunner.
I haven’t been receiving your posts in my mail in several days, so it was delightful to see it today.
I’m sure your mom is enjoying your brother’s visit too. Great that the out of town visits have been spread out so everyone gets their time. You and siblings always seem to work things out so well.
Northern CA weather report says mid 70’s today, but the sun is already out so it may be warmer.
Hi Joy,
Well, you must be the only one who has forgotten about Elizabeth’s dress. I have been working on the embroidery today…whew…that takes a while!
My brother is gone so I can stay at home and sew… not that I minded the family visits!!!
We have wonderful weather here today too! I’m inside sewing but it sure does “look” pretty!
Thanks Joy,
Blessings, Jeanne
I do so remember that post…I was riveted to It that day just looking at the detailed fashions wondering how all that detail was even possible. Maybe that post should be an annual thing? It’s awesome.
Just glanced at the Southern Charm…OMGosh! Congratulations! It was just brilliant
Have fun with your company this week.
Thank you Kathie,
I wish I could have visited the lace section in the General Stores back in the olden days. I would have had my hubby drop me off in the morning and then pick me up in late afternoon.
Yes, Southern Charm was quite an exciting auction…it’s amazing how things can change in the last 4 seconds!!!
My family has all left now but we sure did have some wonderful times of visiting.
Thanks Kathie,
Blessings, Jeanne
I really like the old magazine pictures! The “artistic home fashions” are pretty dreadful, but the ladies’ fashions are just lovely. You actually have me wondering what the oldest thing in my house might be….I’ll have to give it some more thought.
HI Carolyn,
Some of the ladies faces are what’s dreadful… but like you say, the fashions make up for it!
You’ll have to let me know if you find what is the oldest thing in your house…
Thanks so much,
Blessings, Jeanne
Loved this post, Jeanne, the first time around and the repeat! I can certainly understand why it is your most visited — so many interesting things to study. My favorite illustrations are of “some stylish lingerie” with all those beautiful and detailed yokes and bodices. We have some very old photographs, but I think the oldest thing we may have is an antique children’s book. I’ll check the date and get back to you on that……
Blessings and hugs for your day tomorrow!
