When I say yard sale, I don’t mean just ANY yard sale, but the 100 mile yard sale that runs from Jackson, Missouri along highway 25. We didn’t go the whole way, but maybe 40 miles….just enough for me, my hubby and Rebecca to find a few treasures along the way. We always come home and put everything on the table and see who thinks got the best bargain of the day. The jury is still out on that! My hubby and Rebecca both got some new (used) tools and were quite happy with their finds!
We had nice breezy weather for a change and it was a real treat to not have the sun beating down on us the whole day. One year we went, the temperature was 103! We were miserable and almost ready to find a swimsuit and buy it…but we didn’t! :o)
My first purchase was 4 fingertip towels, like the ones I made the bibs from for my sisters. It’s hard to find them when it’s not Christmas. I cut the neck opening out of the end that is embroidered, so I don’t worry about what the design is… I was just looking for fringed towels. I wash them first so my embroidery designs don’t shrivel up.
.75 cents X 4 = $3.00
Up the road a bit, I found 2 pairs of Clark’s shoes… in near perfect condition. Clark’s are my favorite shoe and these were only… $1.00 a pair! That’s right…$1.00 a pair. I got 2 pairs of Clark’s for $2.00! I could hardly believe it!
$2.00 + the $3.00… now I’m up to $5.00
Next I found a pretty white tank top… for $1.00…that makes my total $6.00 so far.
I found 9 gift bags for .25 cents a piece. Most of them are baby bags, but my favorite is the one that looks like a purse… .25 x 9 = $2.25, which is about the price for ONE!
Okay, my total is now $8.25.
I found a box of loose jewelry and Rebecca and I both decided these were worthy of buying to use for something for my dolls. I paid $1.00 for both pieces. The pin is carved out and the cameo is iridescent and very pretty.
Now I’m up to $9.25.
Someone had lots of sewing items but lots of it was sort of ratty if you know what I mean… I looked through everything and thought I could use these birds that were still in a package and the little red bows. As I’ve looked at the bows, the edges aren’t heat sealed so I’ll be tossing them, as they’ll tend to fray. The fabric needs to be washed but is a very sweet print. It would have made a lovely Regency dress too! This lot cost me $1.25.
Okay, so now I’m up to $10.50.
The last thing I found was this Cupcakes cookbook. I really don’t need another cookbook, but it had lots of tips and ideas that I liked… so I paid the $.50 she was asking for it…
I’ve used a lace doily on cakes before but I never thought of doing it for cupcakes…aren’t they pretty?
I just loved this picture of all the wedding cupcakes…
It has some simple cupcakes too…like these, that are made from melting Mars candy bars… and a few other things. If I try them and they are good, I’ll share it with you…
I love fancy cupcakes that look hard to do, but really aren’t… like this one…
When I added in the cupcake book, my grand total was $11.00! Not too bad…huh?
BUT, my biggest surprise was when I got home… I found 2 boxes on my porch… You’ll have to come back tomorrow to see what was in that!
Happy Memorial Day to everyone! I hope you get to spend time with your families and enjoy some good food!
See you tomorrow!
Blessings, Jeanne
$11 — I’m impressed. Great shopping. Of course, if you had known how well your auction would go, you might have spent extravagantly — maybe $15.
Have a lovely Memorial Day — that’s goes for everyone who reads the blog as well as our own blog-mistress. Stay warm, stay dry, stay safe.
HI Marilyn,
A bit late, but I’m here… you were so right…if I had known I was only going to end up with these few items… I might have bought that mantle mirror I loved…but that would have boosted my price up to $61.00… guess not!
I hope you had a nice Memorial Day… I spent it with George’s sister and her hubby and then with my brother and his family over at my moms this evening…
Blessings, Jeanne
Jeanne if you haven’t tossed the red bows you can heat seal them yourself using a lighter. Just quickly run the lighter flame along the cut edge not quite touching and it will seal it. Sometimes it takes a couple of goes to get the distance right, close enough to seal it but not to burn it. I seal all my bow tails like this as I hate to see fraying ribbons
HI Lorna,
I might give that a try. I’ve also used fray check on them but sometimes it leaves a mark when it dries… they were only 10 cents so it’s not a big loss if I flub up…
Thanks though….
Blessings, Jeanne
Wow, Jeanne! You certainly know what to buy and how to get it for a bargain! I love those Clark shoes, they look comfy, and comfy is the word for me when it comes to shoes! Good find on those!
That last chocolate cupcake is making me drool! Not sure I could eat such a lovely creation——-oh YES I could!
Those little birds you found, I have one exactly like it. I have a little lamp in my kitchen that is a tree branch with a next and eggs in it, and I put a bird on the nest every once in awhile, one just like that!
The towels are just perfect for bibs! The material is lovely and I am sure we will see a lovely dress made from it sometime.
You certainly made our day just seeing how far a dollar can go! Happy Memorial Day!!!
Hi Linda,
Yes, those Clark’s shoes were probably my favorite… I was thrilled to find them. I bought a pair of red sandals from the same lady last year! She must like Clark’s as much as I do.
Like I told Marilyn, I should have probably bought more so I could show more… I thought my blog post was sort of on the puny side… but that’s okay, I guess. I was happy with my few finds…and I saved lots of my money for something else…
Blessings, Jeanne
What a fun bunch of sales. Here in Northern CA, we usually call them garage sales even if they are not in the garage. Also estate sales, which are my favorite. We will be having our own sale in the not too distant future. Love your finds.
Gee, those cupcakes look delightful. Yum.
Have a wonderful rest of the three day weekend.
HI Joy,
I want to come to your yard sale… :o)
I like Estate sales too… we just won a few things on a online auction… a new 32″ TV and a blue ray player… for peanuts! The TV still had the plastic around the edges of it… You never know what you might find…
Yes, those cupcakes look delightful alright… It’s almost 11:00 pm here and I’d love one right now…better not…
I hope you had a restful weekend too. Mine was busy but nice… today is was nonstop visiting with Georges sister until 6:00 and then my brother from then until I just got home a few minutes ago.
Blessings, Jeanne
What an excellent bargain hunter you are, Jeanne! You have my vote for your kitchen table “bargain of the day!” I love your smart buys, especially the sweet print fabric, and I agree that it would make a lovely Regency dress. I have a feeling that we will be seeing some of the creative ways you will use your finds in the not too distant future, too. Congratulations to you, George, and Rebecca on your “40-mile-yard-sale” excursion and the treasures you found, and congratulations, too, on the final auction price for “Southern Charm.” May you be blessed by your big winnings!
Thank you Anne,
I am the first to admit I AM a bargain hunter… I love to save money when I can.
I’m sure that fabric will make a very pretty dress too… it’s too bad I’m doing a Regency dress right now, or I might have started it right away… but I suppose I could use it for something else… I’ll have to see…
Thanks for the congrats on Addy’s dress last night… I just showed my brother the auction page and you should have seen HIS eyes… about like George’s last night…
My checkbook was certainly blessed and I was too! It thrills me when someone wants one of my doll dresses so much…
Blessings, Jeanne
First, congratulations on Addy’s dress. I happened to catch the end of the auction and wow, you hit the jackpot with the “under the wire” bidder. That outfit was truly beautiful. Actually, that’s my technique also. That’s how I managed to snag a couple of the rare NIB PC sets that I was required to by at auction or wait and hope they’d come up again. Nope, wasn’t going to chance it.
$11, what a savvy shopper you are. You got quite a few treasures there. Clark shoes are very comfy. My mom loves them. The little mushroom birds are so cute. I have a few that we use for decorations and Felicity has one that came with the Plantation Play set when I bought that. I goes on the perch of her bird bottle.
As to the boxes on the front porch? I’m going to speculate that one or maybe both contain a doll as it’s been awhile since you added Noel to your family. I’m going to think you found Caroline. If so, you will be blown away by her beautiful eyes. Next to my West German 1991 Felicity, she has the loveliest eyes PC/AG ever created IMO. Decal eyes are my favorites, hands down and there aren’t enough of them, just brown, Felicity green, Caroline’s seafoam , and variations of hazel.
Thank you Laura, for your congrats on Addy’s dress too! I was floored to say the least and still can hardly believe it… The Lord truly blessed me with that one. I will have to show the picture of Addy’s dress to the ladies in the fabric store what it looked like and what it went for.
I think my Clark’s shoes were my favorite find… they are so expensive to buy new and to get them like new for only $1.00! I was thrilled and could have gone home happy after finding them… but I’m glad we didn’t…
Well, I won’t spoil the box surprise here… so I’ll make you wait on that…
Thanks Laura,
Blessings, Jeanne
You found some great bargains at the sale! Those Clark shoes have to be the best bargain. All your purchases are great though. It makes me want to get out there and hit a few sales myself.
I hope you have a pleasant Memorial Day too.
Take care.
HI Charlotte,
Yep, I’m guessing I saved a fair amount on the Clark’s… It is fun to find bargains and look for things you think you can’t live without.
I did have a nice day and hope you did too!
Blessings, Jeanne
