A Day Trip & a few “Treasures” to share…

This morning my hubby woke up and said he’d like to take a trip…just for the day. I think he overheard a friend telling me about a new fabric place about 50 minutes from where we live. You can imagine how surprised I was! He didn’t have Chemo last Tuesday, so he’s had about 12 or so days to recover and he said he felt pretty good… good enough to go on that trip. He has Chemo tomorrow, (Tuesday), and he won’t feel like doing anything for the next few days, so he wanted to go.

We got ready in a hurry and arrived at our first “destination” in Cape Girardeau, MO. This new place was called RM Coco and I found out it’s been here for 12 years or so… I have never heard about it but the girl who “showed me around” said they didn’t do any advertising so I guess I wouldn’t have. It was a home decor outlet place, but they had some stuff I could use. There were big long tables with fabric remnants on them and bolts along the side of the walls. The bolts were priced…very cheaply, I might add and the pieces on the table were sold by the pound… ONE dollar a pound!!! Here are a few pictures.

I saw so many fabrics that would have made the most gorgeous pillows…they were already cut into the squares, so pillows would have been a snap to make! Even my hubby noticed them. He was helping me dig through the piles and found a few things I loved. Several of the pieces I found were silk with embroidery on them, and silk dupioni was found in the bottom of the rolling carts…that’s what my hubby dug down and found. I also found a few novelty pieces..that might work for something… bonnets, or capes, or vests, or hats… not sure but at $1.00 a pound, I could take a chance.

When I was all finished, the lady weighed my things… 3.15 pounds… and it cost me a whopping $3.40! Cha Ching! I loved it and will definitely go back again! Here’s a picture of what I found there…

Next we went to a farm store so my hubby could look at some chicken “things.” They had the cutest baby chicks and he couldn’t resist, but he knew it was too hot for them in the car if we did other shoppping. So we decided we’d come back later…

We went to a favorite antique shop of ours and I made another huge purchase… $2.44 on some lace… the navy one is really nice…cotton and vintage.

It’s a fun store and I took a few pictures while there…

Anyone need a Veronica or Betty doll?

How about a Susan doll? Does anyone recognize her?

We hit one more fabric shop, The Golden Needle, and I wasn’t too bad there… I did hit the clearance bolts… 50% off… and this is what I bought there…

…a close up…

…and 3 fat quarters…

We had a nice dinner at Olive Garden, and used a gift card someone had given us at Christmas…

Then it was time to head back to Bucheit’s and pick out some little chicks… I”m not so sure they enjoyed the ride home in the back seat…

When we got home, Rebecca opened up their little barn to see what we had bought…

We picked out 4 more little Bantam chicks. They are straight runs so we’re not sure if they are hens or roosters, but we’ll find out soon enough. One of them is a little bigger than the other 3. There are 2 golden colored ones and I picked out the little black one… she is the tiniest thing… I need to get a picture of her in my hand or by a ruler. It was so cute… I saw the larger one had her feathers spread over the others and they were all asleep.

The two Bantams we bought about 4 weeks ago were a little too big for the tiny ones we brought home today, and wanted to peck on the little ones, so now we have 2 boxes in our living room… they had to be separated.

Such is the life of a girl named Jeanne Marie, who’s married to a guy named George, who’s name means “farmer.” :o)

I hope you had a wonderful day… we did!

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Gee whiz, Jeanne, we were so close yesterday! Cape Girardeau—my old college town, and about an hour away! Maybe that’s a place we could meet up! Wow, you certainly hit the jackpot with fabrics, laces AND chicks! Buchheit—-we have those stores here too, more out in the rural areas, but we have also been there!
I love those antique shops and can spend hours just looking, because I have no room to put anything more in my house! That reminds me, my daughter gave me a small pillow with a little ribbon hanger that you put on a doorknob, and it says “Grandmas are Antique Little Girls” And that is so TRUE! I have mine hanging on the doorknob of one of the doll rooms.

I don’t recognize the Susan doll, and she looks like she is in very good shape, so can’t be that old that I would have had one like her! Boy, the eyes on those Veronica and Betty dolls!

I will be thinking of you and George today, and will be outside again planting flowers. You certainly have some fun times to remember, and I can’t think of a person who gets the most out of a dollar than you do!

    1. Hi Linda,
Maybe Cape is where we could meet sometime….that would be so nice to visit with each other.
You can find just about anything in antique stores! We just mostly looked ourselves…I think George bough a few small hand tools.

He actually didn’t end up having chemo today. He has been having trouble catching his breath the last few days and his oncologist wanted him to get a lung scan to make sure the medicines weren’t causing the problems. He said sometimes they do. So we are waiting to hear back from the dr and if everything is okay, he will have chemo tomorrow. Then in 2 weeks he’ll have his last chemo treatment…

It’s beautiful out today, isn’t it?
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. What an absolutely wonderful day! Thank you so much for sharing it with us. The fabrics you purchased look lovely. It must have been so fun picking out the pieces. The antique shop looked like a lot of fun! I do more looking than buying in antique shops but I do enjoy the looking. Your new chicks are so cute! Do the chickens have names?
I hope everything goes well today. I’ll be thinking of you and George.
    Take care.

    1. Hi Charlotte,
It was a lot of fun looking through all the fabrics…I wish I could have found more small sized prints but I was pretty happy with what we did find.
We haven’t named them yet, but my sister Deb, called the little black one Little Bit and thst has kind of stuck…
You can read my comments to Linda to see about our day…
      Thank you Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. What a day! You must have had a wonderful time. It will be nice to remember yesterday as you spend today at the spa, and you with no handwork to finish up. I’m sure you’ll think of something useful to do.

I think my favorite fabric is the one with flowers, bird, and butterfly. However, if I were going to pick out the fabric for your next dress, I’d choose the navy or black background with the roses — which is too dark for spring, so you don’t have to use it next. I wonder what other people would choose for the next I Dream of Jeanne Marie dress.

My favorite antique show is coming up in less than a month — the Longmont Strawberry Festival. It was always my favorite because it came right after we turned in grades for the semester — it was the one day of the year I could count on relaxing. You have to prepare for holidays — for an antique show, you just go. I loved it.

It may freeze here tonight. I have covers for all the new plants, so they should be all right.

We’ll all be thinking of you today.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
No spa day today…see My comments to Linda. Hopefully we go back tomorrow.
I had my little pouch of some handwork goodies, but didn’t get to do anything today…so I’ll just keep it packed for tomorrow.

Kirsten is going to be next, but I haven’t had a chance to figure what I’m making for her.

I hope you enjoy your Festival that’s coming up soon. It sounds like a lot of fun and it sounds like you have a lot of memories from being there in the past.
I sure hope it doesn’t snow tonight I don’t want to see all your flowers and plants get snowed on.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Ah, what a nice day you had together with George, Jeanne. George was my father’s name too and he was a farmer all of his life…a great name.

    You are remembered.

    Blessings.

    1. Hi Becky,
Oh how nice…we both have “George’s” that we have had the privilege to love!
      Blessings to you, Becky,
      ~ Jeanne

  5. Oh Jeanne, those baby chicks are so adorable. And the bigger chick covering the little ones is so precious.
I’m glad you and George had a nice day out shopping at all these neat stores. Looks like you got some really nice pieces of material and lace.
The black with rose colored flowers and the rusty red with the holly print (?) is really neat. It will be interesting to see what you do with any of the pieces of material. The navy lace is indeed beautiful. I imagine your creative mind had ideas flowing fast!!
    Have a good day.

    1. Hi Paula,
I’m hoping the biggest chick will cover the littler ones and I can get a picture of it. It may never happen again, but it just melted my heart when I saw it.
I know the fabrics I like but I’m not always sure what I’ll do with them when I get them. It’s always an adventure in my sewing room!
      Thank you,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Road trip. Fun. Love your selections from the 1.00 a pound place. Elegant.
And the fine prints from the Golden Needle are perfect.
Thanks for sharing the pics from the antiques store. In the second picture on the right, I own the same white what not stand except mine, from my grandmother is the original wood color. I kind of like the white though. And we just took down the hanging plate collection at my mother in laws and divided so we now have those also. I like the prices on ours, free. 🙂
The chicks are just so sweet. Can’t believe how big the first two have gotten. They look scary! And the new little guys are so fluffy. So the one that is mothering must be from an earlier hatch? Don’t know how that works. I know I wouldn’t get anything done. Probably just sit around and watch the chicks all day.
Hope the day goes quickly so you guys can get onto more fun stuff.

    1. Hi Joy,
We really did have a good time yesterday and even though we mostly did window-shopping, it was still fun just to look around. I like the fabrics I got too, and I will definitely be going back to that place… but not for a while. I’m good for now…
I have that same wooden stand in my master bathroom. It was dark brown…I found it out by the road at an antique shop up the road from me. I threw it in the backseat of my car and drove off. I painted mine white and distressed it…I think I did a post on it one time.
It’s kind of fun having the chicks in the house and hearing them cheep all the time.
      Thanks Joy,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    Jeanne ~

THANK YOU SO MUCH for sharing your BEAUTIFUL day-trip date with George yesterday! I THOROUGHLY ENJOYED vicariously shopping with you both (and WISH we had MORE “unique” fabric stores here in the northern NJ/southern “upstate” NY area, other than JoAnn’s!)! We DO have some antique stores & shops, and seeing your nifty pics has made me want to visit them again…so I think I WILL!

GOOD LUCK to George & you today!

    BEST dolly regards! ~

Cheryl in NJ (also “in NY”, now that I am my Dad’s daily caretaker in “upstate/downstate” NY)

    1. Hi Cheryl,
I hope you find some fun treasures of your own if you go antique shopping.
I’m glad you enjoyed “tagging” along with me on my shopping trip yesterday.
Bless you taking care of your dad,
      Blessings, Jeanne

THANKS, Jeanne! The weather this week in the Northeast is ABOMINABLE, so next week (early in the morning, while Dad is otherwise occupied) I plan to head over to some Hudson River towns in my & Dad’s areas known for their “antiquey” items, including ~ occasionally (!!) ~ DOLLS!

I read this blog post to Dad earlier today, and it reminded him of two things from his past: his childhood in “downstate/upstate” NY, where his family had chickens, a cow, and goats (in a now very “urban” area); and accompanying his folks to Manhattan on fabric-buying trips for his dad’s (my beloved Grandpa’s) ladies’ dress factory (known as “the Shop”). THAT then reminded ME of my own trips with his mom (my beloved Grandma) to those very same stores in Manhattan’s “Garment District” to purchase fabrics, embellishments, buttons, zippers, & trims for that very same “Shop”. THANK YOU SO MUCH for this blog post, which enabled us to take a “walk” down our own family’s Memory Lane!

        HAPPY DOLLING! ~

        Cheryl

  8. Well, humph. My first post deleted itself. Take number two.
What a fun day you two had. The antique store looks like a lot of fun. It sort of reminds me of one of the ones we have in town, a bit of everything to cater to everybody.
I like your fabric and lace choice and see a few “Civil War” prints among them.
The baby chick are adorable and I really like the little black one you chose. George certainly lives up to the meaning of his name. I’ve seen my name reported as meaning “girl from the country” as well as another meaning. I always liked that as I indeed would do well with a country life.

Linda- your pillow is so true. I also like the saying, We don’t stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.

    1. Hi Laura,
I’m so glad you enjoyed traipsing along with me on my shopping adventures yesterday. My hubby and I really did have a good time and it was nice to do something out of the ordinary. It is nice to go to antique shops and see things from days gone by and wonder how they were used.
I like the meaning of your name and yes, I think it suits you well.
Thank you for your sweet comments.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. So many pretty fabrics! Fabric shopping and an antique store would be my definition of a good day. Of course, the best news is that George was feeling well enough to enjoy with you. I’m so happy you both had a nice outing together.

    1. Hi Carolyn,
We really did enjoy ourselves and you are so right…antiques and fabric shopping…ahhhhh!
They are both so much fun.
      Thanks Carolyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. I somehow missed commenting yesterday on your wonderful day together. You are both so loving and thoughtful of each other. Thanks for sharing such a happy day with us. I hope you and Linda can get together someday for a Happy Chat and she can be a proxy for all of us who will wish we could be there.

The cookies sound great. Great finds at the fabric store, especially the tiny prints. Some of the pieces look like drapery and upholstery samples. It’s like M&L Fabrics here in Orange County. The pictures of antique stores always have something that brings back memories and take some close inspection. Another great post; thanks again.

  11. Oh Jeanne! How I miss you and your sewing/farming life! I miss our trips to Cape and Paducah, too. Glad to hear you had such a wonderful day with George. He’s the best!

    1. Hi Jan,
The Quilt Show was just advertised on TV a few days ago.I saw the Best of Show and it looked very pretty.
      I miss those days too!
      Love you…
