I found someone who is interested in my sewing…

(I think) here’s what’s up next. You’ll have to see if you can guess who it might be for… there’s not much to go on…and I’m not sure which buttons I might use…

A few days ago when I showed Nyssa in the red dress (shameless plug… it ends tomorrow night and you can see it HERE), a few people asked me if it fit this doll or that doll, so I tried it on a few of my girls so I could show you. I’ll just tell you now, none of the dolls I tried it on, could wear it “as is.” It was either too long, too big or just too baggy all over. The hat only fit Nahji and Willa. I could easily fit 2 fingers between it and the brim on Ellowyne. BUT… it’s a good start for a dress on these dolls, if I wanted to tweak it just a bit…

It looked like a potato sack on Lian…

I could probably pinch at least 3/4 to 1 inch on the backside of Ellowyne…

Remember the other day when I said I was hand sewing as my hubby was getting a chemo treatment and I noticed not a single person asked what I was working on? Well, I have a new fan….it’s Reuben… He got a new toy about a month ago; a cute purple and pink monkey with long arms and legs and big ears and lots of squeakers inside. The dog is a monster…he’s had that thing chewed up and the stuffing pulled out so many times and my hubby keeps bringing it back into my sewing room asking, “can you sew this leg on one more time? or “just sew it up as best you can…” or “just cut the ears off, he’s chewed the stuffing out of them anyway.” Well, I can only do so much and I said a few days ago, this was the last time I’m fixing this toy. I bet I’ve stitched it up 6 or 7 times already. But anyway, whenever I’m sitting at my sewing machine doing hand sewing, Reuben thinks I’m fixing his monkey. He’ll come in my sewing room, (if I’ve left the gate down) and just sit and watch me sew, for long periods of time. So tonight he came in and was watching me sew on something else and I thought, I need to get that silly monkey fixed one last time. Reuben sat there watching patiently as I stitched it up… putting it back together as best I could.

This is the damage he’s done to his monkey…let me warn you, it’s pretty pathetic…

This was Reuben waiting on me as I stitched it up…

…and wondering what could be taking me soooooo long…

When I was finshed, I dropped it on the floor and off he ran with it.

I barely was able to get a picture snapped… he’s happy now! Oh the joys of being a seamstress! :o)

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Oh, Dotted Swiss! I remember my mother making me an Easter dress in yellow Dotted Swiss, and I think about that dress all the time! I love the tiny buttons, and beautiful trim you have for it and cannot remember what dolls you have any more, except that I know this can’t be for Felicity or Addy, for sure! Possibly Kirsten or Rebecca? I’m drawing a blank!
That Rueben! He looks so comical, sitting there watching you sew! He looks like he has little aviator sunglasses on! It sure gave me a chuckle this morning to see that and his silly monkey! Sometimes it takes a pet to show us what is REALLY important in life and worth worrying about! Have a nice day, today, Jeanne. Hope it warms up a bit, don’t you?

    1. Hi Linda,
I love dotter swis too. I guess this is considered a dotted swiss…it’s not your typical dotted swiss, but I’ll call it that anyway.
Yes, Reuben is quite the king at our house. He is a great friend to George right now.
I’ll keep you guessing who the dress might be for…:o)
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Reuben is so cute! He seemed so happy with his monkey! As for the next outfit, it certainly has beautiful fabric and trims. Both button styles look cute. Hope you have a nice day!

    1. Thank you Charlotte,
Reuben was very thrilled that I finished his monkey …finally!
I’m glad you like the fabric. I can see the dress finished in my mind and I hope it turns out as beautiful as I imagine.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. I think the color and style of the red dress are great on Ellowyn. Red is usually great on Lian, but she didn’t look too happy today, though nothing can keep her from looking cute. The same is true of Ruben, though their styles are vastly different.

My dotted Swiss dress was my First Communion dress, made by my mother on a treadle sewing machine that was even then old and old-fashioned. The pink would be lovely on Molly. I’m wondering about a Samantha era dress, in which case I’d go with the flowered buttons. For Rebecca or Molly, I’d go with the pink ones. Tomorrow we’ll probably find out.

    1. Hi Marilyn,
I agree with you about the dress style looking great on Ellowyne. It looked the best on her I think.
Thanks for guessing who you think might get the dress…I’m hoping to have it started and show a little bit tomorrow. It’s a really pretty pink and the fabric is deliciously soft! How’s that for a description?
      Thanks Marilyn,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Here I thought you were selling out to a major company! And it’s Reuben. Such a sweet pup he is.
Very interesting seeing Nyssa’s dress on the other girls. Wouldn’t have guessed it might fit.
As to the adorable pink outfit to be, all I can see is Kit. And I don’t think you still have her? I forget.
Hope antibiotics are clearing infection and George is feeling good again. Tell him we now have steel gray metallic around here.

  5. My guess is Rebecca for the fabric. Maybe you’re making the Victorian/Edwardian dress Marilyn was hoping to see. You haven’t made that style in a long time, I don’t think.
A furry sewing fan is THE best kind. Reuben is adorable and he does seem to be saying, “What’s taking so long?” The monkey certainly has been well loved. My one kitty boy has a stuffed puppy that he’s had since a kitten. It fortunately has not be chewed so badly.
If Reuben likes to chew, have you ever gotten him a chewy Nylabone? Our dogs always loved them.

    1. Hi Laura,
I’m glad to see everyone’s guesses on who will be next. We’ll see who is right tomorrow.
We have tried everything under the sun for Reuben. He is almost 2 but he is still a puppy in so many ways. He can chew up those bones that are supposed to last for hours in about 20 minutes…silly dog…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Hi Joy,
I used that title to grab your attention…guess it worked!
You are right…Kit’s no longer living with me, so it’s not her…
Ok, Joy…I’m going to have to ask you what you mean by “having steel gray metallic around here.” I’ve racked my brain about what it means but I’m drawing a blank.
    Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Oh, you mentioned George had some metallic and needed to have fluids. I believe I said we were looking at metallic colored paint on cars. Now we have a new suv in steel gray metallic! Silly me.
Ok, not Kit, then Willa? Got in two guesses..

      1. HI Joy,
        Ok…now I gotcha!
You’ll have to wait and see too… :o)
        Isn’t waiting wonderful? NO!
        Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Hi Christine,
Yes, Reuben was waiting for me to fix his monkey…I can’t tell you how many other toys he has had in my sewing room to be fixed.
      Thanks,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. What an adorable story about Reuben. He looks so cute waiting for his beloved toy. Our little toy poodle, Honey, has two favorite toys amongst all her other toys and chews. Lambchops and a tennis ball. She has always loved the many Lambchops she’s pull the stuffing out of over the years.
A friend of ours has this stuff chicken her big dog plays with. She, like you, has repaired this chicken many times over the years too. She uses black thread to sew it up ( she’s doesn’t sew at all) and they call this chicken, “Franken-chicken!”

I’m thinking the pretty pink material is for either for the Little Darlings or as others have said, Rebecca or Molly. Can’t remember if you still have Rebecca.

    1. Hi Paula,
I had to laugh because Reuben had a lamb chops toy too…a sweet little lamb. Of course he chewed it up so bad it had to be thrown away. I just couldn’t repair it anymore.
Oh Paula, I guess you’ll have to wait like everyone else and see who gets the new dress tomorrow.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Lol! Ruben and my Coco have a lot in common! She’s just a year old and she’s a terror to her toys. She loves to unstuff them, then happily carries them around, shaking them back and forth, or playing tug with her birthmom (we adopted them both). The other day, she took my favorite tube of lip balm off my keyboard and chewed it up! She’s not a dog, she’s a goat! She’s lucky I love her… 🙂

    1. Hi Melody,
It sounds like your Coco and our Reuben are just alike. Reuben likes to unstuff his toys too and I find stuffing all over the house. He even likes to eat the stuffing and he does the same thing shaking his toys around with his head sometimes the arms flopping him in the head.

      Oh those pets of ours…
      Blessings, Jeanne

  9. Since no one else has guessed her, I’m going to say the next dress is for Ten Ping. She always looks cute in pink, and I don’t think we’ve seen anything for her in awhile.

Reuben is such a cutie! I have a miniature labradoodle named Linus, and he is also a big chewer and de-stuffer. I have sewn up bunnies, frogs, monkeys, dogs, a big long snake, to name a few… so that he can rip them open again… Best thing I’ve found for him to chew on are deer antlers. They last forever, the calcium is good for him, and they are also good for his teeth. The antlers are cut to manageable sizes – he obviously doesn’t get a whole rack at a time… 🙂

    1. HI Theresa,
Well, my trim might be too big for Ten Ping, but she hasn’t had anything for a long time, so maybe she’ll be coming up soon…
It sounds like we have the same chewers… I’ll have to tell my hubby what you said about the deer antlers… we give him those big bones sometimes when we leave and want him to stay busy chewing on something. We’ll come home and find no trace of the bone anywhere. He eats the thing alive I think! :o)
      Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  10. Well, I really don’t know who the pink will be for, but I will guess either one of the Little Darlings or Patsy. I seem to remember Patsy looking nice in pink.
Reuben is adorable! My dogs have their favorite toys and the Yorkie never destroys hers, but the Jack Russell eats his. He starts by nibbling on the appendages, and the ears are usually the first thing to go. I noticed Reuben’s monkey was missing the ears, and I was actually surprised when I saw it had a tail! I like the comment that was made about him looking like he’s wearing little aviator glasses.

    1. HI Carolyn,
The trim is about an inch wide, so it would swallow up my Little Darlings or Patsy. I’ll go ahead and tell you since you probably won’t see this till tomorrow… the dress is going to be for Molly!
It’s funny, I had my gate to my sewing room open again, and Reuben came in there again tonight and was just sitting there watching me do some hand sewing on this dress. I kept telling him, “Reuben, this isn’t for you…it’s a doll dress!” Like he understood me. He was just sitting there again, waiting for me to I think, hand over something to him!
      Thanks Carolyn,
I haven’t heard from Lana about my doll…I’m going to call her on Thursday. I wanted to wait until after my hubby’s appointment in St. Louis. Something has happened. I was supposed to be the next one to get their doll painted, because somehow I got over looked 3 times. I called the first week in Dec. and she said mine would be next… oops!

  11. Charlotte Trayer

I am going to guess Molly or someone from her era (I can’t remember which dolls you have offhand), as this type of fabric was around then. Actually, I’d call yours “eyelash fabric”, as true dotted Swiss has an almost sheer base and the dots are tinier.

The trim is too wide for your smaller dolls. Oh! It might be for Nyssa again, since she went all last year without sewing anything for her, and I seem to remember your saying something about making her a couple of things fairly close together, or in a row.

I prefer the white buttons–the pink ones are pretty, but since the trim is also in shades of pink, you need a bit of white to break up all the pink, IMO.

I did love seeing Reuben–he’s such a cute dog, and seems to have a real personality! When we had our Molly (the dog–it was many years later I got Molly, the AG doll!), she did a lot of chewing on things the first couple of years, but eventually quit doing that. But I had to throw away more than one spool of thread, as she thought it was a toy when I wasn’t home! I was really glad when she finally outgrew that chewing stage!

    1. Hi Charlotte,
I just finished up a comment to Carolyn, and when I saw it had posted…yours popped up.
You guessed right! You’ll see it tomorrow… Molly is the recipient of the newest dress from me. I didn’t call this fabric dotted swiss either.. I called it tufted cotton, but I like your name better. Maybe I’ll look it up and see if there is a correct name for it.
I like the ivory buttons too, but they might be too pearly for me… I’ll know when I get more done on the dress.
I’ll be glad when Reuben stops chewing on things… we can’t leave our shoes down on the floor at all. So my shoes get put on the TV stand in the bedroom. I hope he outgrows it sooner than later!
      Thanks Charlotte,
      Blessings, Jeanne
