My sewing room finally got something I’ve been wanting since last Christmas…

Who remembers what it was that I wanted desperately for my sewing room? Anyone? I’ve been wanting to change up my sewing room and make it look nice… not so many Rubbermaid tubs, stacking shelves, particle board cabinets, black metal file cabinets, etc… I’ve just got things tucked everywhere. I’ve been looking since last Christmas when I asked for a cabinet or a dresser or piece of furniture of some kind that had lots of drawers in it so I could get my things sorted out and put in individual drawers if possible… My silk ribbons and floss maybe in one drawer, my doll shoes, my doll wigs, my little baggies that I use to send out Rebecca’s necklaces, my stickers and stamps and postage scale, appliques, smocking supplies, etc… all the little “pieces” and “things” that I have zillions of…

So I found this 2 piece set on Craigslist, but it was 2 hours away. My hubby isn’t a big fan of driving…and especially to St. Louis, so I sweet talked Kristoffer into taking his “poor pining” mom to get them. I was more than thrilled when I got there to find out they truly were solid wood, with dovetailed drawers, they have sliders on the bottoms to keep them opening straight. They are very nice and clean and from a non smoking home. I was so excited to see them and they were better than I even imagined. One piece is a dresser and the other is a sort of mini hutch with cabinet doors at the top and 4 drawers below. The plan is to put some kind of a topper on the dresser and use it as my cutting table. I’ll have to pull it a little bit away from the wall and somehow secure the top to it…maybe somekind of formica or butcher block… I’m not sure. It might be just a tiny bit tall for a cutting table, but I’ll have to see. The legs could easily be cut off 1-2 inches if I needed. (well “easily” for me to say, but my hubby would do it.)

But, I am absolutely exhausted so I’m just going to show you a picture of them and will have to tell you the rest tomorrow maybe. My hubby and Kristoffer carried them into the living room and there they sit! The story with Jean will come tomorrow too… but I’m heading to bed…

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Those cabinets are perfect for you, Jeanne! Can’t wait to see where you put them and how you’ll stash everything. It’ll really organize things for you.
My work is getting near the end at my son’s home. We’re all taking a break this weekend and then a couple of days next week should be the last. Hard work but it is fun.
    Have a great weekend!

    1. Hi Paula,
Yes, these cabinets are going to be wonderful.bi have been taking things out of tubs and containers and putting them in some of the drawers. I’m not sure if the stuff will stay where I’m putting it right now but it sure is fun doing it.
I guess we both are working to get things in order right now! Sounds like the end is in sight!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Jeanne,

So glad you found a nice solution for what you had been seeking. How helpful that was of Kristoffer to come to your aid. Enjoy the process of making them your own.

    Blessings.

    1. Hi Becky,
These cabinets ate JUST what I have been hoping for. I am loving them already!
      Thanks so much
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Hi Karen,
Its fun to get something you have been hoping to find for such a long time! I AM enjoying emptying some things and filling up other things!
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  3. Hey traveler, looks like you have put a few miles on the road the last few days. Airport and then St. Louis. (My grandfather was the jailer for the city of St. Louis many years ago.)
Your new additions look like they will do the trick. I do remember how you have been looking for the right piece. You might even be able to remove the current top and add a new one, keeping it a lower height overall, and trimming the legs a bit too. Maybe a frame could be made and a piece of laminate inserted for the top. I’m sure others will have some ideas too. Great find!

    1. Another thought. What about using a door for the top. I’m pretty sure you can buy them without the handle hole. A few brackets and it could go right on top.

      1. Hi Joy,
I saw my hubby with a tape measure in his hand measuring the height so I think he’s okay with a little tweak on them. The dresser is 42″ tall and it seems okay right now but I need to see how it really feels when I’m cutting something out at that height.
A door is a great idea…I need to walk around Lowe’s and just look for “thin” ideas! :o)
        Thanks Joy,
        Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Hi Christine,
Yes they ARE perfect for all my little sewing categories! I think I’m going to get this seeing room shaped up pretty quickly!
      Thanks so much!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  4. Wonderful find for the sewing room , Jeanne! They are in great shape, don’t look banged up or dirty, just like two new pieces! They will make you sewing room look like something from Better Homes and Gardens! It’s especially nice that you found two pieces that will show up so nicely together and bring some unity to the room. Since you can see the sewing room from the living room, they will dress it up, and the color is very in vogue now. Lighter is the way to go!
I’m going to stop before I get cut off!

    1. Hi Linda,
I like them being white too. They are just a little distressed on the edges…and made to look sort of Shabby Chic i think. Just the way I like things! At first I thought they might look too “bedroom-ish” but I think they will be perfect in a sewing/craft room!
      Thanks Linda,
      Blessings. Jeanne

  5. It’s been a rather busy week for me so I’m a little behind on commenting. Lian’s dress is lovely and I see it is doing very well on ebay. I really like your magazine you showed yesterday. I always enjoy when I run across old magazine in the antique stores. The pencil sharpener is just like ones I remember as well from grade school. We actually still have one of those pencil sharpeners mounted in the basement from our homeschooling days. The really big deal was when Erasermate pens came out and you could erase a pen mistake without having to recopy the entire page.
Wow, I love those cabinets, you will certainly be organized when you get them filled up. It will certainly make finding what you want a cinch.

    1. Hi Laura and thanks for your thoughts. I hope your week slows down soon like I’m hoping mine foes too!
My new cabinets are really nice and its a pleasure putting things in them…they will make it much easier to find things! I love them!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Glad you finally got your Christmas wish, Jeanne, and how sweet of Kristoffer to take you to St. Louis to pick up your terrific finds! These are beautiful, coordinating pieces that definitely will provide wonderful storage and give your sewing room a nice, cohesive look. Will look forward to the details of your organization process and the final reveal of your “new” workspace makeover. I hope the end result will be all that you have envisioned and more!

Congrats again for snagging such great furniture pieces, Jeanne, and kudos to Kristoffer for helping his momma! Wishing everyone a great weekend!

    1. Thank you Anne,
Kristoffer and I had a nice time to visit in the 4 hours we were in his truck! He was glad to help me and of all the places we could have eaten in St. Louis…he pucked Taco Bell!
My new cabinets are still in the living room but I’m transferring things from tubs to the drawers and having a grand ole time doing it!
      Thanks Anne,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  7. Matching pieces like those are a real find and worth the trip. I’ll be admiring your sewing room even more. Glad you have the weekend to rest up. You’ve certainly earned a rest.

    1. Hi Susette,
I’m not so sure about the “rest” part but I do plan to work in my sewing room! This is something I have only dreamed about!!! Now it is happening!
      Blessings, Jeanne

  8. Congratulations! This is wonderful. If the cutting area is a little high, George can change it to the exact height you need so that you can cut without making your back tired. How smart you were to have married him (and how smart he was to have chosen you). I do like the door idea — and it can be painted to match and refreshed every year or two. It looks like a ton of storage space in small enough sections that you can stay organized. And, looking again, I see that it’s just slightly distressed, which means a scratch here and there won’t hurt.
In three or four years, you and Cindy can repaint and give the room a new whole new look.
I loved Becky’s words — “the process of making them your own.” If we think of reorganizing like that, it will be much easier to do.
One more thing done. It’s one you’ve wanted to accomplish for a long time. I’ll bet you got up early to keep organizing. Christmas in August! What could be better?
And congratulations on your auction. Laura is right — it’s doing very nicely. Someone is going to be very happy.

    1. HI Marilyn,
I’ve been working off and on all day moving things from one place to another. I’ll have to see when I get it in my room which drawers I actually want things in, but I’m just grouping things for now and seeing how much space it takes up. It’s going to be great and I’m already loving it!
George thinks it wouldn’t be too hard to cut 1-2 inches off of the bottom legs and then it would be closer to the normal height of a cutting table. I told him I’ll try it out first to see if it bothers me with the extra height. I doesn’t take that long to cut things out so it’s not like I spend hours and hours doing it. I spend more time working on the top of the table and then taking pictures. It might be nice to have the extra height for that… I guess we’ll see.
Thanks so much for your kind words. It’s been something I’ve wanted for such a long time and they just always seemed out of my reach or a little bit too far. Thank goodness for Kristoffer or I’d still be searching!
      Thanks and blessings to you,
      ~ Jeanne
