The Making of a Bunny… for Ten Ping’s new Easter Dress… Hip Hoppity Polka Dottie!

How about that title for Ten Ping’s dress… too much? I thought of it all by myself!

I was determined not to go to town today to find an accessory for Ten Ping’s new Easter dress… (if you missed the first “episodes” of Ten Ping’s new dress, you can see them HERE, HERE, and HERE.) I thought surely I had a little bear, or a bunny or a puppy or a kitty in pink or black or white, but not a thing… I did have this color bear, but he looked rather blah to me next to Ten Ping’s bright dress…

Then I remembered something I said in Ten Ping’s Ebay listing, about March being “National Craft Month” and it’s really and truly true. I thought why couldn’t I just make a bunny for her… how hard could that be? W-E-L-L…it’s not that it was so hard, it was just time consuming…

I drew a rough draft of a Ten Ping sized bunny that I thought I could stuff,

but I didn’t have the right color wool felt to use and I decided I really didn’t want to go to all the trouble of making one that had to be “stuffed” but would like to just make a flat kind of a bunny…

Then I thought I must have some piece of novelty Easter fabric that had a bunny on it and I could cut it out and make a little stuffed animal from it…. but no again…

So, I got to digging around in my “stuff” and I found these sticky backed felt-like Easter appliques. I bought them at Joann’s last year or the year before. There were rabbits and chicks in the package. They weren’t made very well, as the eyes were off center and the glue was sort of smeared on the front of them.

B-U-T… they were pretty stiff and I could use them for a pattern…so I cut out a “chocolate” bunny…

I asked my hubby what he thought of the “chocolate” one and he didn’t think it went very well with Ten Ping’s brightly colored dress… so I looked for some furry kind of fabric in pink and white… and tried cutting out bunnies from it…

CIMG8170

The “fuzzies” in the fabric, all fell out and that was definitely a big NO…

Then I decided to go for some polka dot corduroy that I have. I fused some wonder under on the back of it to make it a little stiff and then placed one of the pink bunnies on the back of it. They stuck together and it was pretty stiff… Then I proceeded to do a blanket stitch around the edges of the bunny and added a few straight stitch details. I added a white glass bead eye and a pink bow.

When I was all finished, I looked at the back and it wasn’t pretty…

CIMG8177

…so I fused another piece of corduroy fused with wonder under on the backside to hide all the ugliness…

CIMG8181

Ten Ping was pretty pleased when I showed her the bunny… and I was pretty pleased that I didn’t have to go to town!

So that’s how you make a bunny!

So, if you’d like to see the whole outfit, it’s listed on Ebay and you can see it HERE.

AND… don’t forget Lian’s Pink and White smocked dress ends this evening on Ebay too.. You can see it HERE.

See you tomorrow,
Blessings, Jeanne

  1. Totally adorable, Jeanne. Again, you do marvelous things with fabric, ribbons, buttons, etc.

    Take care.

    1. Thank you Becky,
It was fun to do a little craft project… and see what I could come up with.
      Thanks so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

    1. Thank you Joy,
Ten Ping is holding onto her bunny for dear life. Thanks for your sweet thoughts.
      Blessings, Jeanne

  2. Funny Bunny is the perfect accessory in the black-and-white polka dot fabric. Congrats on another winner and another crafty idea.

    1. HI Susette,
I like the name “Funny Bunny” for Ten Ping’s new friend.
      Thank you for your compliments…
      Blessings, Jeanne

I went to your auction to see which photos you chose. I really like the way you put this together so that each possibility has its turn and the buyer can see how many different ways Ten Ping can wear this charming outfit. While I was there, I checked Lian’s auction and admired again how well the outfit shows up against the stormy gray background. I like backgrounds, like the Scenes and Settings from AG, but they are not the only effective background, as Lian’s pictures demonstrate. Details really do matter, and that’s one of the things you are very good at.

    1. Thank you Marilyn,
I appreciate your thoughts on the background. Sometimes I wish I had the Scenes and Settings books again, but I do like the simplicity of the solid background. I was thinking of getting a lighter gray or a light blue for Spring….
Thank you very much for always noticing the little things…

  4. Oh Jeanne, that polka dot bunny is just too adorable and so clever of you! I also like your Ebay write-up on the story. It is so endearing towards little Ten Ping. You bring it all to life!
    Most excellent!

    1. Thanks Paula,
I’m sure some people will read my auction listing and say, “That lady’s crazy!” Oh well, it’s what comes easy to me… and I sort of like doing it that way… :o)
      Thank you so much,
      Blessings, Jeanne

  5. When cutting out fuzzy material, plush, or mohair, you have to be careful to slide the scissors along under the fuzzy and just cut the backing. That way your fuzzies don’t fall out. 🙂

    1. Hi Melody,
I know to do that with scissors, sort of like you do when cutting out pile, but I was just testing it out and it was too flimsy anyway to work and the fur was too long… oh well…
It worked out in the end with the corduroy, so it was okay… but thanks for the tip that
      some may not have known…
      Blessings, Jeanne

      1. *hangs her head, sorry Jeanne. I should have known better! 🙂 Btw, love what you did with her little bunneh! Perfect for her adorable Easter outfit.

        1. HI Melody,
Noting to feel sorry about… it was fine what you said… and some people may not have known to do that. I should show how to do it on a post…
Thanks so much… now lift up your head!
          Blessings, Jeanne

  6. Oh my, Ten Ping is the envy of a lot of your dollies, I imagine! What an adorable little bunny for her, Jeanne! You are so remarkably talented in just about everything you do, and this little bunny is no exception. I just love the crisp, neat way you make things, so that they really stand out. I would also think that the flat bunny would mail so much better than a stuffed one.

Well, I must say the whole outfit is just completely adorable! Is Ten Ping the size of a story book doll? Just wondering!

    1. HI Linda,
Thanks so much for your comments Linda. I’m not any more talented than anyone else… I just dig in and figure things out… that’s all…
Ten Ping is 8″ tall so she’s a bit taller than the average Storybook doll, which is generally 5 1/2″ to 7″ tall. She is a fun size to sew for… I’m just now getting used to her body and how to make things fit well.
      Blessings to you Linda,
      ~ Jeanne

  7. The bunny you created is cuter than the other ones…sometimes you just have to “do it yourself” to make it right.
She looks so sophisticated in all her darling accessories! The black and hot pink just really work together for almost any doll…good choice!
    Good luck with the auction!

    1. Thank you Kathie,
Yes, sometimes you just have to do it yourself! You sound like you’ve done the same thing before!
I think you’re right.. most dolls can wear hot pink and black and pull it off.
      Thanks again,
      Blessings, Jeanne
